Upgrade your factory speakers

Are your car's factory speakers sounding a little flat? Replace them with these Sony GT Series speakers, and you'll hear the full impact of your music, along with lots of little details you may not have heard before. Bass will be punchy, and vocals will sound more lifelike. Your commute will be more enjoyable than ever before.

Better sound thanks to better materials

The XS-GT1638F 6-1/2" speakers feature woofer cones made from Highly Oriented Polyolefine, a lightweight material developed by Sony that's especially rigid and strong. Sony reinforces these cones with the same Aramid fibers that are used in bulletproof vests, so they'll stand up to high-volume playback. Each 3-way speaker features a 1-7/16" balanced dome tweeter and a 1/4" supertweeter that reproduce lively highs, adding in the details that make the instruments and vocals sound true to life. Grilles are included.

Product Highlights:

  • 6-1/2" 3-way car speakers (pair)
  • Aramid-reinforced Highly Oriented Polyolefine (H.O.P.) woofer with cloth surround
  • 1-7/16" PEI balanced dome tweeter and 1/4" PEI dome supertweeter
  • grilles included
  • power range: 2-40 watts RMS (260 watts peak power)
  • frequency response: 50-24,000 Hz
  • sensitivity: 91 dB
  • top-mount depth: 1-11/16"
  • warranty: 1 year
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

Didn't Last

Written by: kdm from Texas on April 5, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Matched with a Sony car receiver. No amplifier. Sounded decent initially. Less than one year later (only by a couple of days) one speaker doesn't play at all and the other one sounds distorted. Trying to figure out if it is worth the hassle of a warranty claim. Truly disappointed. On the other hand, I will say that I had zero issues with Crutchfield!

Pros: Pricing

Cons: Didn't Last and marginal sound quality

1992 Toyota Paseo
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The stock paper-cone speakers on my 92' Toyota Paseo were falling apart and rotted. I chose these Sonys for their low price and the Brand's good track record with me, and they've so far delivered. The only problem I have with them is that when it's cold, the speakers pop a lot so I have to wait until the cabin of the car is warmed up before I use them. But overall the sound is leaps and bounds better than what I had before.

Pros: Sound, especially in the mid to high range

Cons: Speakers pop when the cones are cold.

Great low cost factory upgrade that should last forever. I put Sony's in the rear first as the original AC Delco's went out. I was so happy when the front door AC Delco's stopped working & I was able to replace them with these. My truck sounds 100% better. What more could you say!

Pros: Should stand up to the beating that my work truck goes through. Snowplowing & Carpentry uses.

2006 Chevrolet Avalanche
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

And it's not even about the price!! Normally, my wife can't tell the difference in sound quality, so the only reason I ordered these was because she blew the passenger side door speaker. I was already ordering a new HU for the Avalanche for a back up camera, so figured what the heck. After installing them and the HU, she started to complain that the rear door speakers sounded like crap. So I had to order another pair for the back. She had the fader set to 10 rear because the sound was so out of balance with the stock speakers. Can't wait for them to arrive so I don't have to listen to her about the poor quality of the stock speakers compared to the Sonys.

Pros: Astounding sound for 6 1/2" speakers. Three speakers in one!

Cons: None!

Replacing 10 year old speakers in my 2005 Nissan Xterra. Replaced one real speaker which was blown, tried the speaker before replacing the other 3. The new speaker was very tinny with little to no base. I ended up leaving my old stock speakers in the car as they sounded better than the new Sony speakers. Disappointed.

Pros: Inexpensive

Cons: Sound quality marginal. Would sound ok if you had a separate base speaker. They have little to no base sound.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers fit great in the doors of my son's 2001 GMC Yukon XL. Bought four for front and rear balance and they sound great. Easy install; fit perfect; we did not need the bracket for our install. Also bought the surround baffles to keep out moisture. This year's xmas gift was a new Kenwood X598 stereo (see separate review). Together they sound awesome. Don't hesitate to replace the garbage factory stereo unit; you will be amazed! I have been buying Sony and Kenwood car stereo gear for decades and have never been disappointed.

Pros: Fits perfectly, easy install, good CF instructions, sounds great for the money

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Lot's of guys trash these speakers as not having enough bass. What do you expect for the price? These are great factory replacement speakers and for most who intend to keep the sound inside their car they are more than fine. If you like bass that vibrates your windshield and causes hearing damage then look elsewhere.

Pros: Price, accurate sound, base is fine for most. They are shallow mount so will fit in doors with tight clearances

Cons: They will not please people who expect lots of bass for the money.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As I read in former reviews, they all pretty much hit on the cons of these speakers. These were BARELY upgrades for my 1997 accord. I found that these speakers were lacking in bass and sounded "hollow" or flat. Only a few months after purchase I found myself with a blown speaker in my right door, The volumes that were being played should have not harmed this speaker at all. This speaker lacks bass and blows way to easily. In fact, i reinstalled the factory speaker to replace the blown one, and it actually sounds just as good as the Sony's. I don't recommend these if you're looking for true upgrades from your factories. Spend a little extra and get something else.

Installed as part of a full factory replacement on a 2014 Nissan Sentra. Much cleaner sound than the factory speakers.

Pros: Good overall sound at an affordable price.

Cons: Unfortunately there was no MasterSheet for my car so I had to look elsewhere for instructions on how to disassemble my car's interior, a not so difficult but lenghty process. Sounded good for about 2 days then one of the speakers started to give a distorted sound (I did not play them loud at all). Took the bad speaker out and the cloth around the woofer was wrinkled and soft...it had collapsed in a 1" section. I expect more from Sony, but really not surprised...should have gone with Alpine/ Polk to begin with.

Pros: Sounded good for the time it worked

Cons: Poor materials surrounding the woofer. I went and got some Alpines to replace...they sound great. Will not go back to low price sony speakers..lesson learned.

One of the factory speakers in my Dodge Dakota went bad, so I bought these to replace the factory speakers. The factory speakers sounded way better. These sound tinny and cheap, and no bass. I even double checked the polarity because of the lack of bass. I realize these are not high priced speakers, but what's the point of aftermarket speakers that sound worse than factory? These are likely to be sent back for a refund.

Pros: They might be ok if you also use a sub woofer.

Cons: Cheap sound and lacking in bass. Factory speakers sound better, at least on a Dodge Dakota.

Great replacement speakers in a 2001 Silverado

Written by: Dukeboy40475 from Richmond, KY on April 27, 2014

2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these Sony 3- way speakers to replace the stock speakers in a 2001 Chevy Silverado extended cab. I had already replaced the stock stereo with a higher- end Kenwood. I had listened to some of these speakers at a local big box store and they sounded better to my ears than some higher priced speakers that were also on display. I paired them with some 4X6 Kicker 40CS464 speakers in the rear doors. I also left the OEM tweeters installed and hooked up. The big box store wanted $184 just to install speakers. I got both sets of speakers from Crutchfield with all of the installation gear for less than $100 and decided to try installing them myself. I had never installed speakers in a car before, but the door panels in a Silverado come off pretty easily. I had a buddy, who had never installed any speakers in a car either, help me. It took us about an hour and a half to install all four speakers, which included having to drill some holes for the rear speakers. Someone with experience could probably do it a lot quicker. The install on the front speakers was really easy with the supplied mounting bracket, which snapped right into the factory speaker mounting position. No drilling is required for the front speakers to be mounted if you use the bracket. The sound quality out of these is great compared to stock. They work just fine with the factory tweeters as well. If you've replaced your stock stereo you owe it to yourself to replace your stock speakers as well.

Pros: Great sound, especially for the price Easy installation (at least in a Silverado)

Cons: None observed yet

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Surprisingly decent sound. I purchased as an afterthought to get my 20% off on my Sony Head unit. I have these paired with a pair of Fosgate 6x9's in the rear deck and they blend in pretty well. Clear volume and decent full sound. I think a lot has to do with the clear signal and sound shaping capabilities of the Sony deck, but I'm happy. I've bought a lot of 6 1/2 's in the past, so I know what to expect. These are not polk quality - but then again they aren't the Polk or JL price. They sound decent with just 17W coming from the deck.

Pros: Clear full sound, decent lows

Cons:

I used these to replace the original speakers in my 2001 Honda. They made a dramatic improvement but seem a little tinny even with the bass all the way up and treble all the way down. If I were buying again I would spend a few dollars more with the hope for a better sound. The installation was easy with the included adapter.

I replaced the front speakers in my 2003 Subaru WRX. They sound much better than the stock factory speakers. For the price, I am quite happy with the upgrade. For my vehicle model, I will note that the packaged screws are too long to be used with the included (by Crutchfield) mounting bracket. I used #8 5/8" sheet metal screws from the hardware store instead, as I did not have anything on hand to clip the Sony screws.

Pros: - Clean sound

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these on my 2004 Honda Element after I blew out the stock ones. I ordered these speakers because they were an exact fit for my car. Crutchfield did great with shipping and I ended up getting them a day head of schedule. These speakers came with the wiring adapters and instructions for my specific car. These speakers were a breeze to install and only took half an hour to install in all four car doors. I've had these speakers for a month now and all I can say is wow! They are a big improvement over the stock speakers both in sound quality and in the material there made of. These speakers have a little extra bass then my stock ones but still sound great! I have a factory tuner in my car that lets me adjust the settings on the speakers, so I can get them just right. I would definitely recommend these speakers for anyone who wants great sound in their car but doesn't want to blow a lot of money on them. The people over at Crutchfield were amazing in their technical support and I wouldn't shop anywhere else!

Installing these into the front door of the CRV was an easy process, once I had all the wires securely connected. Altho i say great, they arent excellent, in my opinion, but did fulfill the job of replacing my stock speakers in my '97 Nissan pickup, sounding way better in filling the cab w/less distorsion in my mids & highs. The lower bass end is a little lackluster, not seeming to reach the levels that even my puny little stock speakers could reach. But this is not gonna be an issue, for i am installing a sub in a bandpass box for that end. I think it will suffice, to balance that out. These are located at lower front corners of my doors, & can be heard no problem, unless I have something blocking it in my passenger side.

Pros: Clear-as-day mids & highs, not a "tinny" sound to that

Cons: Not a strong punch in the low end, unable to detect lower Hz very much

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The speakers are better that the original speakers and are not very expensive. I have a 2003 Dodge Dakota with 130000 miles on it and I did not want to invest in expensive speakers when my truck might not last that long. These are just right.

Pros: Easy installion. They have multi mounting holes that make alignment to existing mounting holes convenient.

Cons: The way I mounted the adapter to the speaker left the ends of the mounting screws with nuts to high to put on Sony speaker cover. It was ok because the door panel covers them anyway.

2012 Kia Optima
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers have a crisp high end and a very good mid the low end is OK at best, not really much bottom end. But for 6 1/2" speakers your not going to get that deep bass. When these are added to a Infinity Basslinbk sub woofer woo watch out they sound amazing. The instructions that came with the speaker adapter plate did not say anything about drilling new mounting holes or drilling an access hole for the speaker wire to go through.

Pros: very nice construction sounds great on the mids and highs

Cons: Low end is a little weak

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just finished installing my new speakers and after listening to them ( I had my wife listen to them too. She thought they were awesome) I'm completely satisfied with their performance. Crutchfield sent more them enough to complete the installation and with the factory speaker wire adapter's I'm now set to travel the roads with my tunes to keep me company. Just a few months ago I had changed out the rear speakers and my next item will be the radio.

Pros: Ease of installation. The Crutchfield supplied items (wires, hardware, etc)

Cons: None found

Written by: Paul F from southern Ohio on September 15, 2013

I replaced the broken factory Infinity speakers in the front doors of my 2001 Dodge Durango with these Sony's.I bought these because of the 20% discount on a Sony receiver.I was VERY impressed with the sound quality with just the factory receiver ,but when I put in the new Sony head unit....WOW these suckers rocked! They are particularly good with vocals,so rock music really shines. They've sounded good with all types of music, however they are NOT subwoofers.Midbass is as low as these need to go.I have them crossed over at 80hz with an 8 inch Bazooka and they sound great!

Pros: efficient, great vocal clarity, good overall sound, installed easily in my Dodge durango and a great price!

Cons: none what so ever if used within their frequency range (not for deep bass)

2009 Honda Civic LX
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off these speakers have very minimal bass, however what these speakers lack in bass they make up for in seriously crisp high and mid range sound. For the price range these speakers cannot be beat. You'll need a sub in order to get the bass you're truly looking for, otherwise you might find yourself disappointed with the low end output on these.

Pros: Incredible clarity from mid to high frequency sounds. Fair price.

Cons: Close to non existent bass.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The included mounting adapters made installation quick and painless (although slicing my finger while trimming unneeded plastic woulda hurt). The speakers sound very well balanced but I needed to crank the bass due to leaving the factory tweeters in my truck doors attached...my bad.

Pros: Well balanced sound. Easy installation.

Cons: Having to trim the mounting hardware is dangerous.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Let me just start by saying thank you. Awesome site! Finding a set of speakers was easy with the "outfit my ride" option. The hardest par was picking the ones I wanted. Once I picked a set checkout was easy and shipping was free and fast! And of course install was easy and fast with the free adapters and wiring harnesses. Took about 30 minutes to install 4 of these in my crew cab truck! These speakers are actually more than I expected and sound great for the price. I would recommend these to anyone with a budget!

Pros: Easy install, quality sound, decent bass for this speaker

Cons: None

Pros: Direct fit, Easy to install, Sound great in a convertible roadster.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced all 4 original car speakers. Much better highs & lows than the factory speakers. They were a perfect fit in my 1998 subaru legacy. No drilling or cutting & no interference with the windows or trunk torsion bars.

The only reason I gave them a 4 star is there are better speakers for more money. For the price I guess they are a 5 star.

Pros: Good speaker for the price.

97 Miata speaker replacement

Written by: NickC from Southern NH on August 13, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Needed to replace some origional speakers because one was gone. Choose these more on that they were a direct fit and on price. Music in an older covertable, esp with the top down, is always a challenge and the Sony's do an OK job of it. A puriest might want better but they are better than the Pioneers that were in it. I don't drive the car for the radio.

Pros: Easy enough to install, needed no ring adapters and Crutchfield included the wiring plugs to directly go to the car plug.

Cons: None
