Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

I just installed my gt-400 today aside from having to wait for the harness, which I had to purchase seperately it took about an hour to install, the sound quality sounds great in my 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, The display looks fabulous I like the "red" display now I'm waiting for my remote to come in I hope it works as well as the whole installation process,

Pros: Cheap and afforadable, easy to install.Great soung quality

Cons: Trying to figure out how to set the correct time without a manual.

Great Stereo, Needs Tweaking for a Good Sound

Written By Dan, Boise, Idaho on Sunday, December 10, 2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I drive a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am SE and this deck looks great, sounds great, the DSO sucks because it only cranks out really high distorted noise, so I don't use it. Plays cds/mp3/wmas great, the output jack is totally awesome. Installation was a breeze, very nice display, barely any bass response, but maybe thats cuz my back speakers ate it. Shipping and installation guide were great, I would definately recommend this stereo if you're not looking for bass from your speakers. The sub pre-outs are very nice, hope to add some subs soon.

On another note, the faceplate is VERY easily removable, I don't know what those people were talkin about earlier, it's very easy. I do wish that it would've come with a case for the faceplate though.

I'm very impressed with crutchfield and I'll most likely be buying car audio things from them again. Keep up the good work guys!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound is great and the install is easy. Made a great improvement from my 1995 Camry OEM unit.
Useful front aux input for mp3 player.

THE COLOR SWITCHING DOESN'T INCLUDE HALF OF THE LIGHTS. Only the display changes color which means unless you set it to red, you have green/red, blue/red, yellow/red...A REALLY POOR AESTETIC DESIGN.

ANNOYING WARNING BEEPS WHEN YOU LEAVE THE CAR and don't remove the faceplate, which I do 98% of the time.

No Bass/Treble, only DSO, EQ3 settings.
Only 3 band EQ, which is insufficient.
Small buttons - safety issue while driving.
Non-intuitive setting sequence - had to read the directions.

Seems to stick out from my dash 3/4 inch, which does not look good, but with the hair-brained dual color scheme, who will notice?

May keep or transfer to my wife's car if I can't stand it any longer. Should have spent more money.

Well-intentioned, but design flaws knock the GT400 out of prime-time

Written By Aaron, Rockville, MD on Tuesday, November 28, 2006

As most everyone will testify, Crutchfield is a great store to buy from.

I wish my review of this radio was as unambiguous. On the plus side: this unit plays MP3s with very impressive sound quality--FAR better than even many MP3 computer programs, and the quality is audible at all bitrates--the intended result of the BBE-MP processing Sony built in. On the negative side though... radio reception fairly tanked after installing this unit compared with the stock unit on my Honda Accord 2005 LX. This is especially so on AM, where only the closest stations now come through w/full clarity.

Overall sound quality feels inconsistent and the lack of dedicated bass/treble is a deficiency; and the need to readjust the entire EQ3 whenever sound/road-noise conditions change makes for some confusing listening. The DSO is often helpful but sometimes imparts a kind of sharp tinny tone to the sound which can actually become unpleasant. The detachable face mechanism is not a major pain but could be better.

But the single biggest shortcoming on this unit is the rewind/fast-forward function: The function (regardless of format) moves the track by 4 sec. for every 1 sec. your finger is on the button. In other words to rewind a track by 1 minute you need to hold down "rewind" for 15 seconds. Just try that when youre trying to rewind/FF a 15-minute concert track or a 45-minute lecture or book on tape! Cueing up to the point where you left off can easily turn into a 15-minute ordeal on long tracks (one that will result in considerable finger discomfort due to the tiny buttons). A surprisingly thoughtless design flaw from Sony.

This baby's not ready for prime time yet.

Sony CDX-GT400

Written By Zatch, Connecticut on Monday, November 13, 2006

I got this as a birthday present to put into my first car, a 1996 Ford Ranger. The radio was incredibly easy to install with everything Crutchfield supplied and I was able to get it up and running in an hour on my own. Though this radio has driven me to look into purchasing some after-market speakers, it sounds great even with the stock ones.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Had I known the backlight stays red I'd have never bought this. Luckily my wife loves it, so I installed in her car. I never remove the face, but it sure is a pain to put on. The 3-band EQ just doesn't cut it for the price. No Loud feature? There are much better options in this price range. I'm glad my wife likes it, cause I'd have sent it back. Keep looking, Sony(and lots of others) offer better units than this!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was my first purchase from Crutchfield. What a great experince.

First I am extremely happy with the stero. The GT400 does everything I wanted it to. I now have to upgrade my speakers since they just can't handle the power from the GT400.

Second, Crutchfields instructions and installation kit was wonderful. I read many reviews about the ease of using their kits so I timed my self. I have a technical back ground so I was going to be very critical about any mistakes. There were none!! From start to finish it took 1 hr to remove and install the new stereo. If my car did not need the harness adapter it would of been 20 minutes MAX!!! LOL.

Good Value, But Not Great Value

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit itself offers some great aspects that really perform. Then there are other areas that just seem lacking.

Read the other reviews for the same problems I have. The buttons should change color with the screen. If you change the screen color, the overall asthetics are somehow off in combination with the red buttons. So I end up leaving it on red screen/red buttons all the time without utilizing the other colors.

The face plate attachment system seems to have been created by emotional sadist rather than a functionalist. On average, one minute to get it attached. I don't mind not having received a carrying case for it so much. But combining the two problems makes for a real pain.

The DSO really makes a big difference in my '97 Ford Explorer. The factory door speakers were positioned directly into your knee's. And this would both distort and muffle the sound quality coming out. But with the DSO feature, that problem is a thing of the past. Also, with the factory system, the sound seemed to come from the opposite side of where you were sitting and now it is centered and sounds perfect! I'm still in awe at such a remarkable difference in sound quality.

When setting the EQ, having the ability to control the sub seperate from the low's, mid's and high's is great! In my Explorer, the 5X7 door speakers just really can't handle much bass and still sound good. So being able to transfer that to the sub and away from the door speakers really is a comfort knowing that I am not going to blow a speaker at any minute.

This is a very good CD head-unit, but it does have some issues.

Written By Matt, Durango on Friday, October 06, 2006

I bought these to install in my 97 Honda Civic Sedan (w/o keyless entry). If you have my type of car and want this, or any HU you will have a few issues BEYOND the installation alerts. This also goes for 96 and 98 years, too.

There are some great features that make this a nice CD player.

1) Sound quality and frequency response is great. Its internal processing of mp3s and atracs add a bit of luster to the overall sound. With my new Inifinity 6 1/2 and 6x9s installed too it makes for a full range of sound! Great full range!

2) MP3/WMA/ATRAC3plus playback is excellent.

3) The DSO is a good feature, but it doesn't work for all songs. I am unsure why, but some songs sound better than others with this on.

4) Front AUX port is PRIMO!

For the price I too wish it had a little more of this and little less of that.

1) The color changing back lighting is nice, but I agree that it too should change the overall stereo lighting. Red is just not my cars color. ;-)

2) The face is rediculous to get on and off with any finesse. This is a repair waiting to happen.

3) A face case would be nice. In fact it would be nice if companies would supply soft, padded cases instead of the rigid plastic ones that break with the first impact.

In the front doors I had Infinity Reference speakers, and the rear-deck Infinity Kappas installed. See my other reviews.

Not bad for $160, but...

Written By Roadtripper, Portland, OR on Tuesday, October 03, 2006

I've had a GT400 in my car for a few weeks now and I have mixed feelings about it. I really love the crystal clear sound quality this deck produces. I run four 4" and two 6x9" speakers in a little roadster; this unit more than fills the car with sound, even when the top's down at 80 mph. The front auxiliary imput jack is one of the main reasons I purchased this unit, making it really convenient for plugging an Ipod, Walkman, or laptop into the deck. The seven display colors are a nice touch, but you'd think the rest of the units colors would change as well. The dial-type volume knob is great, especially after years of +/- buttons on my last deck.

There are just a few things that keep me from rating this deck higher:

1. The CD track/station tuning buttons are really small and easy to miss while trying to keep your eyes on the road.

2. The face comes off easily enough, but you have to align two pins to put it back on, which is more difficult than any deck I've had before.

3. A 3-band equalizer on a $160 stereo? Even with the low band set at a maximum +10db, I cant get the bass low enough to sound good. The highs are extremely high in my car, though. The DSO button seems to increase the highs from my front speakers more than anything. I plan to add an aftermarket EQ with amp.

4. No bass or treble controls - you have to adjust the equalizer. No bass boost or loudness option, for that matter.

5. No face case! Im looking around for an old one to store it in so mine doesnt get destroyed in my pocket.

6. No mute (cell phone or otherwise) button on the deck.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The installation in my 2003 Honda Accord went pretty smooth. I did need to buy an 18" radio antenna adaptor in order to install the receiver/player. I installed the player below the factory radio/player using the provided replacement insert. It really does install pretty easily if you take your time and are methodical in following the not completely evident directions. There are some gaps in the directions but any difficulties can be overcome with patience and trial and error.
The new player makes the factory speakers sound much brighter and full of life. This was a great upgrade in sound quality.

Guess I need to add a sub

Written By A.J., Mobile, AL on Thursday, September 07, 2006

This is my second or third purchase from Crutchfield over the past 10 years. Just as in the past the shipping, master sheet and everything from Crutchfield was best in the industry.

This is my second Sony Explod cd player. I purchased this because it had 3 sets of preamp outs, BBE MP, Aux in, detachable face and being a satisfied Sony customer for quite some time. This goes for most of the products they make.

I found the detachable face is a bit of a pain to get in because of the little pins. It takes a lot longer to make sure its in there than my previous Sony. Although the color display is purely aesthetic, I wish the knob colors changed with it. I also think the greens arent so different as to put that many in. I wish theyd have just replaced some with totally different colors. Its also hard to see a few of them in the daytime. At night the Red really stands out though.

I put this in my 2002 Toyota Tundra because the stock cd player finally died. I was suprised the Bass response from the stock cd player was far greater than this Sony. The lows have dramatically decreased even when I set the low on the eq all the way to 10. I havent seen this mentioned in other reviews but the DSO has really impacted my 6 speaker system. Im not sure if this is because some of these other vehicles dont have it. The tweeter seperates distort like crazy when I use ANY of these DSO models. My Toyota factory cd didnt distort them at about the same volume levels. I think the amplifier must have a higher THD level than my Toyota stock amp.

It does have better AM reception than my stock radio but the FM is not as good. It also looks better than the stock cd playe

Good radio, lots of nice features. Detachable faceplate a bit hard to remove at first (but in my car, radio was slightly recessed during install so it may not strictly be a radio flaw). Switching display colors is superficial but rather nice for making sure radio matches "feel" of console. Playing mp3 discs is great.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well I bought this radio on 7/06. This radio does all I expected and then some. Put this in a 2003 Toyota Tacoma and boy did those stock speakers come alive. I had my doubt on the sony I've always been sortta a Pioneer guy. I had just recently purchased a Pioneer DEPH4800 for the wifes car and had a local stereo shop install it. Should have bought it from Crutchfield and I would have saved about $125.00 doing it myself. I love the aux. plug in the front it's great to plug the xm radio or Ipod into. I learned you can search the internet and maybe save a few dollars but with Crutchfield you get a FREE WIRING connector , FREE install kit with pocket and and INSTALL instructions and wiring hook up thats very easy to do even for the novice. The EQ has only 3 bands not as many as the pioneer but I like the sound better than the pioneer and Im pretty picky with sound. Overall you cant go wrong with this unit. Crutchfield you ROCK thans for saving me the extra money....

Kickin' Sound

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ive just installed my Sony CDX-GT 400 in my 95 Subaru Legacy LS Wagon.

I found the installation to be a breeze thanks to Crutchfields Subaru wiring harness and cyrstal clear instructions. Balls on accurate!

The hardest part of the install was when a screw for the radio bezel fell down underneath the shift mechanism.....but we wont talk about that one. LOL!

I havent had a decent sound system in my vehicle for quite a few years and I decided to try an after market model. I chose the Sony model based on customer reviews.

It does an absolutely AWESOME job. I can drive in excess of 70 mph on the Interstate with the sunroof open and my window down while I groove to the crystal clear notes pounding from my stock Subaru speakers. A girl can sure get lost in her music under those circumstances and Im sure Im quite the sight as my fingers play drums on the steering wheel as I bob my head, sway my shoulders and sing along.

The sound is just positively AWESOME!!!! I found the controls and various functions of the unit to be very easy to learn. I love the display color options as I can change them to match my mood.....Theres a color for EVERYTHING....whether Im a mother, a child or a lover. And just when you think youve got my color figured out.....BOOM.....I can change that as fast as I can change my mood. :o)

The Graphic Equalizer modes and DSO options provide an excellent arsenol of audio options. The radio picks up stations better then the vehicles stock radio did. Im still exploring what this baby can do as Ive only installed it three days ago and Ive only had the opportunity to use it for 40 minutes total time each day

Excellent sound quality; good variation of colors to match any dash lighting system; very high signal-to-noise ratio for CD's; good power and sound quality. Could use a few things: a mute on the head unit (it's on the remote), EQ memory for each source. Overall very please with it. I have it hooked up to 12" subs and 2 sets of Polk Audio component speakers, and it sounds great.

Written By Joe, Orange Park, Florida on Saturday, July 08, 2006

This is at least the sixth Crutchfield-purchased car unit I've installed over the years. I installed this unit in my 2003 Ford F-150 to replace the stock AM/FM/cassette unit the original owner purchased. I liked the unit's front-panel AUX input for plugging in the portable MP3 players my family and I use. MP3 capability was important, since I enjoy burning my own mix discs. The Sony players has met every expectation. I like the selectable colors on the backlight, the customizable EQ settings, the flip-down door and the excellent display choices. The unit drives my stock Ford door speakers very well. Once again, the installation was nothing short of a breeze. I recall that my earlier Crutchfield installations were just a bit more difficult. Their research on various automobile models has certainly made installs much simpler. Highly recommended, once again.

Sweet System

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After shopping for systems at a local store, I decided there is no way they can touch the value that Cructhfield gives you. I would have spent $50 more with having to buy all the harnesses and adapters that Crutchfield gives you for free! Also, the instructions that crutchfield includes are top notch! So, I decided on this Sony system. I've always had pretty good luck with Sony, and this unit is no different. This is a great deck. I like many others, purchased this for the front AUX input for my MP3 player. Works flawlessly. I noticed that you can also adjust the input level of the AUX signal, which is a plus. I had to buy a inline amplifier for my Nissan Titan system with the AUX input because it wansn't adjustable. This deck eliminates this sort of issue. Also, the sound is great! Plenty of power for my needs. I noticed that the DSO feature really made the factory speakers sound wonderful, but was a bit too bright for my tastes after replacing the factory speakers with a slightly better set. I was definately impressed with how the DSO could improve the sound of those factory speakers though. Anyway, don't shy away from this player. You won't be disappointed.

Some good, Some bad

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this for my sons 1997 Breeze because of the front aux jack and Sony quality.Plus it has a lot of FLASH! The good. There are a lot of sound control options and the cd quality is really amazing. We put 6 1/2" Infinity Reference in the doors and Sony 6X9 3 ways in the rear. The amp in this unit is really punchy and controls woofer movement really well. The remote is handy and easy to use also. The bad. This unit does not have a loudness or bass boost function so when you are listening at moderate to low volume levels it has a very flat sound, sounds like the woofers just stop responding. My Pioneer has 3 levels of loudness. Most of the radio stations we listen to are 50 miles away. It does pick up the stations well, but the quality is just not as good as my Pioneer. If you need a front aux input and listen to cd's really loud, go for this. If you want better overall sound and a top notch tuner, though not as flashy, go with a Pioneer.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 1988 Porsche Targa and wanted a CD player with an AUX INPUT on the front for my music player. That's how I came to the Sony GTX-400. I didn't really pay much attention to the DSO when I read the specifications. But, WOW! The sound from the door speakers sounds like it's coming from the dashboard! Before, I could barely hear any sort of details when driving down the freeway with my top off. Today it was heaven! The Who's "Love Reign O'er Me" sounded absolutely superb at 85 mph even with all the wind noise. I really didn't think I could get this good of a sound in this car. And, I can easily read the display with the sun shining - plenty of contrast. I spent maybe 3 minutes with the owner's manual and maybe less than that pushing buttons before I had pretty much everything figured out. Oh, I had a professional installer put the deck in for me.

Sony CDX-GT400

Written By Jenny, Kingsland, GA on Sunday, June 18, 2006

Great cd player. I have it set up with Sony speakers and I couldn't be happier. The DSO feature really makes the sound so much crisper and sounds incredible. The red face color really doesn't show up in daylight until you get in the shade or at night time. But I simply ride around with blue or green until the red shows up better. But I love the fact that the colors are able to change and I like that I am able to stay with the black & red theme of my car. Crutchfield makes the installation a breeze with an adapter that fits to your factory stereo so you don't have to worry about clipping wires or even attaching the wrong ones together. I'll never buy a stereo anywhere else.

good head unit

Written By Justin, Albany, NY on Friday, June 09, 2006

This unit plays very well and I have no complaints in that aspect. The Aux input is a cool feature that was the deciding factor to buy this item. There is no need to buy an overpriced Ipod adapter with poor user controls. If you don't mind controlling your music with your Ipod or MP3 device, this is a great option for you. I have had many head units in my day, including JVC, Clarion, Sony, and Alpine. This Sony player was the only one that felt light and chinchy to me. The other players faceplates were heavier and more dense. The BIGGEST annoyance about this deck is the way that it attaches and releases from the base. All of the other players I have purchased were simply one second slide and push. This deck requires you to place the faceplate perfectly on the pins of the unit and then push. Though this may not be a big deal to people reading this; but you will see how this could be a problem after repeated detaching. The other big annoyance was the fact that the faceplate is NOT motorized. So again Sony's attention to detail is left to be desired. After years of the spring function opening without a motor could cause a problem besides the annoyance of this slow fold down. If it wasn't for the 3 preamped outs, aux input, and great cd playback quality, i would have passed on this unit. Like another reviewer stated; If sound is your main concern over any of these problems you should enjoy this deck

I love this unit. You can't beat it for the price. I replaced my incredibly underpowered factory head unit with this Sony and the difference is astounding. Great sound with my factory JBL speakers. I'm usually skeptical when it comes to manufacturer's sound shaping tools, but the DSO sounds great. That, mixed with the 3 band eq gives you a tremendous amount of power to shape the sound to your content. I hook up my Sirius plug-and-play tuner and my MP3 to the front aux input. Another nice feature is the unit remembers the different sound settings (DSO, EQ) for each source - tuner, CD, AUX, etc. Installation was a breeze with the included instructions and adaptors from Crutchfield.
This is a steal.

Good but could be better

This is the first Sony CD system for me. Installing it in my Ford F350 was easy. I'm using the factory speakers the sound was great. I was very disappointed there was no case for the faceplate, you can't display the clock and CD information at the same time, the unit doesn't return to its previous setting and automatically play when you reinstall the faceplate, and the attenuation button on the remote only, not faceplate.

I think Sony could afford to at least supply a protective case for the faceplate. I know it turned me off from buying another Sony to replace the factory stereo in my car.

Sony CDX-GT400

Written By Christian, Shreveport, LA on Thursday, April 06, 2006

There isnt much that I dont like about this deck overall. I was looking for something to keep my color scheme of black and red going and this fit the mold perfect. I dont have a crazy set up so with this deck and some speakers to push everthing is great. Its easy to setup and I have only owned Sony decks and this is my 8th deck. I cycle them out each year and there not letting me down.

Sony CDX-GT400, great unit!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 1999 Special Edition (10ae) Miata that came stock with the Bose sound system. The CD deck went bad and so I decided to see what the advisors at Crutchfield could come up with as a replacement. I wanted a deck with an aux input for my 30 Gig mp3 player and that would work seamlessly with my Bose power amps and speaker system. The CDX-GT400 was what they recomended and they were right on the money.
This unit rocks! When I would drive with my Miata's top down with the old deck it was nearly impossible to here my music but with the Sony CDX-GT400 that problem is gone. I can now here my music as if the speakers have been moved up about a foot and closer to me. Great job Sony on building a great and affordable deck and great job Crutchfield for listening to me and recomending a deck that does everthing that I needed it to do!

best ever

a terrific sounding radio that hooked up to my 10 disc changer and very simple hook up should have gotten it sooner

First rate sound at an affordable price!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy to use head unit. Not the best as far as flexibility. Only a 3 band equalizer. Display is very poor in highly lit areas. Display is pretty basic and outdated looking.

On the plus side, EXCELLENT sound quality. It would be hard to best this unit for price. Great D/A section in this unit.

If sound quality is top on your list and looking cool isn't, I would highly recommend this unit.

Excellent for the money!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my second Sony stereo in a row, and its been great. I've had it around a month now, and I love nearly every feature it has.

First, the look. It looks awesome during the day or the night. The gunmetal grey faceplate is very stylish. The greatest thing about its aesthetics is the color change, LCD of course. It kinda sucks that the rest of the it (buttons) doesn't change, but you'll live with it. It should be easy to find a screen color that matches your factory interior lights. I did have to take off the beauty trim that fits around the face plate and hides the metal bracket around the edge of the stereo. It was preventing my dash piece from being put back on all the way. Not a fault of Sony, I suppose.

This player has so many different audio features, its hard to decide where to start. Building a system around it is easy with all the RCA pre-outs on the back. I'm only using the speaker wires and built-in amp, which sounds great also. It's powering four kenwood speakers quite well, despite only 17w RMS. A few complaints about its audio sampling with the BBE MP filter (for playing MP3s). Whenever a song comes along with lots of bass, the highs seem distorted. This isn't the fault of the speakers, since turning off BBE MP fixes it, although the music just doesn't sound as good. Overall, BBE MP makes MP3s sound worlds better, but it does have its limitations.

The Equalizer curve is simple yet effective. I cleared up my music very quickly and had it singing loud.

I also wish that you could have the clock displayed while also displaying ID3 tag info, but that's a minor annoyance. Overall a great player!

Completely Satisfied

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off, this was my first order from Crutchfield. I have never had a better experience buying a car stereo. I had originally tried to buy this unit from a local chain store and I was going to let them install it for me, which, by the way, they were going to charge me 80 bucks for!! After leaving my '06 Tundra with them all day, they call up and tell me they can't install it because they didn't have the right dash kit. So imagine my surprise when I found the Crutchfield website. They have the dash kit AND they give it to me free and give me the installation instructions free!!?? I was even more surprised when I installed it in under an hour. I feel like going back to the chain store's install shop and setting up a booth outside with Crutchfield fliers. I'll never buy a car stereo from anyone else.

As for the stereo, I bought it mainly as an upgrade from my stock unit. I'm not an audiophile, I just wanted something I could hook an MP3 player into (front AUX jack is extremely handy for this) or play CD-R/RW/MP3 cd's with. It's been good for that so far, I have no complaints about this unit. It does what I need it to do, it's relatively inexpensive, and I don't feel like I'm paying for too many bells and whistles. If I buy a changer or upgrade the speaker system in the future I have the ability to do that as well. I am 100% satisfied that I got what I paid for.

Great update from Stock!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased 2 or these units. The first was for my wife's Durango with an Infinity speaker system. This unit brought that system alive with sound. The sound quality was light years ahead of the factory system. She really enjoys the ability to change the color of the display, as well as the MP3 play back

The second was for my 90 Suburban with all after market system including subs. Again this unit completely out performed the older Kenwood system that was in the truck. The separate sub outputs and sub control were a nice upgrade from my older unit with none.

As is expected of Crutchfield the customer service was outstanding and the installation parts were included in the price. You can not beat Crutchfield for there service, Period!

This unit provides many neat features at a great price point and is an outstanding choice to replace a factory unit or modernize an older system. My wife and I are very happy with these units and highly recommend this unit and Crutchfield to any one.

Well fit with my Passat B6

This's only one I can find to match the ambient interior lights of the 2006 Passat, besides the sound quality is a hugh improvement compaing to stock one.

Great Budget Unit!

Written By bassthump, Atascadero, CA on Monday, February 20, 2006

Bought 2 of these (although they were last years model). They are great units for the value. I have one in my F-150 powering 4 Infinity Reference speakers, and my wife has one in her Durango powering 4 Polk Audio speakers, an Alpine Class D amp and an Alpine 10" sub.
- Great feature set for the money
- Clean sounding output
- subwoofer controls
- MP3 disc playback is GREAT!
- Aux input with input level controls (Great for increasing headroom from my iPod)

- Sub crossover is a bit wonky and not very musical
- for serious sub tweaking you really need a parametric EQ that this unit doesn't offer

If you're looking for a killer unit to replace an OEM stereo and want some extra bells and whistles at a good price this is the unit for you. If you are more of an audiophile you may be a little disapointed.

Great unit

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This head unit has a great feature set. The 7 color display is cool too.
In the features section for this unit is says it has 2 pre-outs, but there is actually 3! It has the normal 2 sets of Pre-outs and there is a pigtail set of sub pre-outs in the upper left corner(not shown in the photos). [Editor's Note: This customer is correct, and the error has been corrected. This model has 2 sets of preamp outputs (front and rear) in addition to a pair of mono sub outputs.]
The sound clarity is crisp & clean. The AUX-in is great too. My MP3 player & Sirius Sportster R sound awesome thru this front port.
Many thanks to Sony & Crutchfield

Changer Controls

Drive S: The CDX-GT400 features the Drive S chassis platform. Drive S includes the CD mechanism, audio stages, 12 V power supply, and tuner section. The CD mechanism includes a suspension to resist shocks, a motor that draws less power, and a fast low-current pickup that improves durability and CD playback accuracy. The 52W x 4 S-MOSFET Power IC produces clearer, more accurate sound, less distortion, and a higher signal-to-noise ratio than previous designs.

Satellite Radio Ready: You can connect a satellite radio tuner to the CDX-GT400 in a couple of ways. The unit is directly compatible with the SIRIUS SIR-SNY1 Satellite Tuner for Sony (item # 607SIRSNY1). The Terk XMDirect universal XM Satellite Radio tuner (209XMD1000) can be connected to and controlled by the head unit when used with the XMDirect Smart Adapter for Sony (209SON110).

Note: In addition to the optional satellite tuner, you will also need the proper antenna and a subscription to SIRIUS or XM Satellite Radio.

Variable Color Display: The display backlight illumination can be adjusted to any of the following colors: light blue, blue, white (has a bluish tint), green, yellow green, red, or purple.

24-Bit Burr Brown D/A Converter: This digital-to-analog converter uses Advanced Segment architecture to achieve improved dynamic performance and resistance to clock jitter. Additionally, the digital-to-analog converter features a zero-bit detection circuit, which senses when all bits are low on a CD, and mutes the output for improved S/N ratio.

ATRAC CD Playback: The CDX-GT400 plays ATRAC3plus/ATRAC3 files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. Each ATRAC disc can have a maximum of 255 groups and 999 files.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit can play MP3/WMA files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. Each disc should have a maximum of 150 folders and 300 files/folders. During playback, the unit displays any recorded ID3 Tag information.

EQ3: You may select one of the following EQ presets: Xplod, Vocal, Edge, Cruise, Space, Gravity, or Custom. For each preset, you can adjust the following frequencies: 60 Hz (Low), 1 kHz (Mid), and 10 kHz (High). The level of each frequency can be adjusted from +10 dB to -10 dB in 1 dB increments.

BBE MP: When playing back MP3 files, the BBE MP circuit recovers and recreates harmonics, restoring the detail, warmth and nuances that existed in the original recording.

Dynamic Soundstage Organizer (DSO): Sony's Dynamic Soundstage Organizer uses proprietary circuitry to induce subtle phase shifts, simulating a sound source that is placed higher than the actual speakers in the vehicle. For example, when the DSO function is used in a vehicle equipped with speakers mounted low in the front doors, it creates virtual speakers in the dash to raise the soundstage. This unit offers three levels of DSO, each with a larger and higher soundstage. You can store the DSO setting for each source.

Best Tuning Memory (BTM): This feature selects stations with the strongest signals within the selected band and stores them in order of their frequency.

2V Mono Subwoofer Preamp Outputs: In addition to the 2V front and rear preamp outputs, this unit includes one set of 2V mono subwoofer preamp outputs. Although there are two female RCA subwoofer outputs, the same signal is carried by both connections. A low-pass filter (see below) can be used to filter high frequencies from the signals output by the subwoofer outs.

Low-pass Filter: The subwoofer preamp outputs have a selectable low-pass filter that may be set to 78Hz, 125Hz, or off.

Front Panel Auxiliary Input: A front panel stereo minijack is provided to allow the connection of a portable audio source. Just connect your portable cassette, MD or MP3 player to this unit, and you can listen to the audio from the portable player through the speakers in your mobile audio system.

Dimmer: This unit is equipped with a wire that Sony calls an illumination lead, however, it acts as a dimmer lead. When the dimmer mode is set to "Auto" and the illumination lead receives power, the display dims to a preset level. The display brightness is not affected by the vehicle's dimmer control. Also, the dimmer feature may be turned off, so dimming does not take place when the illumination lead receives power. You may choose to dim the display at all times by setting the dimmer mode to "On."

Note: For this feature to work, the unit's illumination wire must be connected to your vehicle's dash lights wire.

45-Degree Installation: For flexibility of installation, this unit can be mounted between 0 (horizontal) and 45 degrees.

Wired Remote Compatibility: In addition to the supplied wireless remote, the receiver can be controlled by an optional wired rotary commander (item 158RMX4S). Once the wired remote is connected, you can change the control direction of the remote, depending upon which side of the steering wheel you choose to mount the remote.

Changer Controls

Compatibility: This unit is compatible with Sony Unilink CD/MP3 and MD changers.

Optional Auxiliary Input: You can connect an auxiliary audio device (such as a portable digital memory player, cassette, MiniDisc, or VCR) when used with the optional XA-300 Unilink Auxiliary Input Adapter. The XA-300 uses the Unilink and Bus Audio inputs on the back of the receiver, and allows you to connect an optional CD/MD changer in addition to the auxiliary audio source.

Multiple Changer Control: A maximum of 5 CD changers, 5 CD/MP3 changers, or 5 MD changers may be connected to this receiver. When connecting CD, CD/MP3 and MD changers, you may connect up to a total of 7 changers (but there must not be more than 5 of one type of changer). When connecting more than one changer to this receiver, you must use the Sony XA-C30 source selector.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: Pressing the Off button once will turn off audio output, but the clock display and face/button illumination remain on. This makes the clock display and face/button illumination "Keyed" instead of "Unit On" only. To turn the unit off completely, you must press the Off button for two seconds.

Note: When installing in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you must turn the radio completely off (this defeats keyed operation), or you may wire the accessory power wire of this radio to an alternate source of accessory power to retain keyed clock and face/button illumination operation.
