Sony CDX-GT565UP

Overview

Our take on the Sony CDX-GT565UP

Bring your PANDORA® Internet radio stations in the car with Sony's CDX-GT565UP CD receiver. Just plug in your iPhone to the front-panel USB slot, and you can control PANDORA® like you do any other source — including "thumbs up" and "thumbs down."

Bring your PANDORA® Internet radio stations in the car with Sony's CDX-GT565UP CD receiver. Just plug in your iPhone to the front-panel USB slot, and you can control PANDORA® like you do any other source — including "thumbs up" and "thumbs down."

Set your display to match your music
Sony's Dynamic Color Illuminator lets you customize the color of your display to match your car's interior. And if you're feeling really groovy, you can activate the Sound Synchronization feature which times the color change to match your music.

Ready for satellite radio
You'll find a direct connection to SiriusXM's XM tuner, which lets you pause and rewind live broadcasts, plus see alerts when your favorite team or artist is playing on another channel.

Dial in great sound
The receiver's EQ7's 7-band equalizer gives you lots of options for getting the sound just right in your car. Sony's DM+ Advanced circuitry restores the details that are lost when you compress your digital music, so you enjoy the best possible sound from your MP3, WMA, or AAC files. And if you're craving a perfect stereo sweet spot, you'll be able to dial it in with the Listening Position feature.

Dive into your iPod's music library
If you're going to use your iPod® in the car, you'll appreciate how seamlessly it works with this receiver. Sony's Quick BrowZer lets you search for a song by genre, artist, or album — just rotate the knob to find the song you want, then push to select. If you've got lots of songs on your iPod, the Jump control leaps through them in 10% increments, while ZAPPIN™ plays short clips of your music files until you hear the song that suits your mood.

Thinking of adding on?
When you're ready to expand your system you'll find two sets of preamp outputs for adding external amplifiers or a powered subwoofer. You can use the built-in high- and low-pass filters to trim the signal going to your speakers and subs so you get maximum efficiency from your system.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Sony stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and this Sony, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

Love it!!!! Only thing I would do differently is get unit WITHOUT CD as I have yet to use it. All music on USB key. Love it. Only thing is that when it is bright, the curve of the display makes it difficult to see what is up.

This is one of the best models out there. It has all kinds of colors for display to match your car. I have a Red car so I have placed red for the color. It has a usb connection which helps if you have a android phone or iphone to play more music. I have bought this at Walmart for under 80.00 since I work there.

Pros: Best radio than all other brands

    Cons: None

    Nice (just one little issue)

Great sound, No surprises with installation, Good price. I really enjoy using the front USB port for a flash drive with over 500 songs. this is a great feature. Only problem is: When you reach down to turn the volume knob and accidentally push the button, it goes into the configuration mode and you can't change the volume for a little while. More than once I pushed the button without knowing it and ended up inadvertently changing some of the settings.

    Pros: Sound, Price, Features, Value

Cons: Operation can be awkward (as described above).

The radio reception of this receiver is the worst of any automobile receiver I have ever owned and that includes the AIWA i put in my old work car. IF you only listen to MP3s then this would work. The customer service for this unit was also less then expected. I have replaced this with a cheap Pioneer unit that works flawlessly.

    Pros: Great for MP3s

Cons: No radio reception. Whats the point of a receiver if it can't pull in stations.

I bought this to replace a Sony cassette stereo from 1998. It sounds way better than the old one. lots of features, more than I can figure out. This is my fourth car stereo from Crutchfield, also my home theater system.

Pros: Great sound, Sony quality, lots of features, good value.

Cons: Too many features, can't figure out the rear bass ehancer-one of the features I bought it for. Being a geezer I prefer knobs and switches as opposed to endless menus.

I bought this head-unit back in march and it's freaking amazing! It was a little tricky to install and ground but i figured it all out. I love the preset equalizer i always have it set on xplode and the Digital Media option for aux/usb/cd is very handy for clarity. Overall you would not go wrong with buying this unit, although its discontinued they have a newer model for sale and i highly advise buying it if you're on a low budget.

Pros: Changes color, Easy to use, Adjustable bass, Bomb equalizer and overall worth it.

Cons: A little hard to install and ground it. And for my 02 buick century i had to break a piece of the stock headunits holder to insert RCA cables.

For a moderately priced head unit this had all the features I needed. I can cram some MP3's on a thumb drive, toss in a CD, or listen to the radio. My job keeps me on the road a lot so I needed something to give me some decent tunes while traveling. This unit has a number of features to enhance lower end speakers as well as enhance digital music quality. It's also kind of fun to have it changing colors but not really a selling point. I've never been a huge fan of Sony head units as I've always used Alpine in the past however this one was cheap (on sale) and it fit the bill without breaking the bank.

Pros: -Clean clinical sounding power to drive my lower end speakers -Plenty of adjustments available to clean up the sound quality -Single large button for most settings is a much needed improvement over older Sony designs

Cons: -Always despised all the little cheap buttons Sony insists on using on their head units. When driving it's hard to hit the right one without taking your eyes off the road. -Somewhat confusing menu system to dig through to set the unit up

Already sounds better than my factory stereo, and I could spend a lot of time making it sound better (equalizer). Familiarizing myself with the controls may take some time, but it sounds very good, and the main controls(ie., cd, fm, am, volume, presets, etc...) are very similar to most other stereos...so no trouble there. I love being able to customize the colors. The Techies at Crutchfield also get 5 stars.

I was looking at a 1000 mile trip to Disney with my wife and two kids in a Jetta Sportwagen...with the stock stereo--not a fun proposition. Two days before we were to leave I called Crutchfield and ordered this Sony radio and had them over-night it. It arrived on schedule and in good shape. The install took a little longer than expected as I did not think I would have to splice wires together considering I purchased a $70 "harness adapter" that really should have been plug and play. Once I made all of the connections it worked great and was MUCH better than having to deal with the crappy reception of the stock unit. Also, I found that I really liked the Pandora interface.

Pros: Great stereo for a good price.

Cons: Wiring harness was more work than expected.

this is a great radio. It does everything you could ask and produces great sound. Locks on to stations near and distant with no frequency crackle. Plays your iPod like it was made by Apple and has a front jack for any other device you might own. Put mine in an old Audi and what a difference. The only hangup was a loud pop, every time you changed stations or inputs. A quick call to the Crutchfield tech line gave me the answer, and the company sent $40 worth of parts to fix the problem which apparently occurs from time to time when you put this kind of radio in my kind of vehicle. The new devices (ground loops of some kind, (I think) did the trick and now everything is beautiful. Great radio, but even more important, great support from Crutchfield. If only all companies had the same attitude.

Pros: Great sound, easy install, fun product.

I'm writing this today to tell you guys that this amazing stereo works with the latest iPhone 5 out of box ( I usually use the "iPod Mode", where you can control using both stereo and the phone itself ), just get an extra Lightning cable from Apple.

The head unit's powerful and its controls are complex. Stock speakers will benefit from the unit's functionality. I upgraded the speakers, but preferred stock with added baffling. Aside from the unit, I recommend getting the ASWC, and phone Axxess for detailed instructions. Also, the Crutchfield DIN kit is not an exact fit. I filled gaps with matting and used a Dremel tool to shave down the housing.

    Pros: I love it!

    Cons: Neighbors hate it!

This unit sounds great when you finally get everything set up right.Love the rear bass enhancer feature since I have a Toyota Tacoma there isn't room for sub woofer. The only thing I could say bad about it is it won't play all of my files from a flash drive.I put 110 cd's on a flash drive but it only plays about half of them. Also I use a Sony Walkman mp3 player and it does the same thing.Sure you can use the aux.input but then you don't get the songs displayed.

Pros: Great sound for the price.Easy to install and set up.

Cons: Doesn't play all of my digital music on flash drive and mp3 player.

This stereo had everything I wanted. It sounds great and works well. I like the fact that I can customize the colors to match my car. The fact that it lets you connect a subwoofer and set the crossover frequency, slope, volume and phase is awesome. The controls are somewhat hard to use. I find myself using the remote because its buttons are easier to use then the stereo. I love the 7 band EQ. I just wish I could customize the preset EQ settings. It has one custom that you can set to anything, but i would like to start from one of the presets that I think is close to what I want, and adjust it. I like the USB input. I ripped all my CDs in Windows Media player and put on a USB stick. Now I have all my music with me all the time. If I had a smart phone I would have bought the stereo with Blue Tooth and kept my music on it, but I don't so I saved the money. The manual sucks. It tells you what every button and option is but has very little explanation of what it does. For instance: ATT (attenuate) button, to attenuate the sound. To cancel, press again. This is straight from the manual and all it says about the ATT button. I found a marketing brochure on-line that told a lot more information.

Pros: Adjustable display color, 7 band EQ, Sub output with all the controls, USB input, Shows radio station information, Aux in for MP3 player.

Cons: Controls are somewhat hard to use. The numbers 1-6 are hard to find and read to tell the number. I wish I could put my USB drive inside the unit as another one did, but that is no big deal. The manual doesn't explain the options very well.

Awesome receiver! I especially like its 7 band EQ feature which eliminates a need to install an additional EQ gear in your car. The EQ band spectrum covers most important frequencies and you can scalp your sound almost to the perfection. Other receivers provide only 3 band EQ, which in my book is not enough. That's why I have bought this particular unit. And considering the price it's a steal!!! Features wise it is also a great product. Love the USB and Aux front ports. You can adjust the color of the display to the color of your choice, and the color that would match the display color of your car's dashboard. I have set up the White color of the receiver's display for the day time driving. The night time driving (when you turn on the lights) is set up for the Amber color, matching the color of my dashboard. The unit switches the display colors automatically. As soon as you will turn on the lights in your car, the display color of your receiver switches to the pre-programmed color of your choice. Gotta read the manual for programming some of the awesome features of this receiver. Once you will do it first time, you won't have to do it again, unless you would like to change things. The quality of the sound is great, but I am still using my 1999 Honda Prelude's factory speakers. When they will be replaced with a new Sony speakers this entire radio sound system is gonna rock BIG time! I could not ask for a better replacement of my factory radio then this one.

Pros: Great overall sound, 7 band EQ, USB and Aux front ports, display colors adjustments, removable face plate, quality finish, easy installation with Crutchfield's adapter kit, big bonus to Chrutchfield's MasterSheet.

    Cons: None, so far.

Got this unit to complement the new Polk db501 and db351 speakers I put in my 84 mbz 300cd, and it makes SUCH a difference! I installed the speakers first, and while they were an improvement, there was still a ton of distortion and virtually no base when played with my original factory head unit. After popping this head unit in everything is way way more crisp and defined, and I can actually get some bass out of my speakers now! Definitely worth the money, easy installation (as long as you follow the directions properly). The wiring harness made installation even easier, and allowed me to keep my factory plugs intact for an easy switch back if I ever want. It also looks very clean and matches my car well, not gaudy like some of the head units out there. The only negative i can really see with this is there are a ton of bass control options in the sound control dept, but there is no treble-only control available, only preset configurations that manipulate the highs. Not a huge deal but a little annoying.

Pros: -great sound -clean look -easy installation -decent price -quality construction

Cons: -controls can be hard to reach when you are driving, some buttons a little small and hard to hit accurately if your not staring at it -lack of treble control

The system works as expected. It does take some time to get used to the functions for sound quality and adjustment. I also have not used the ubs that much yet so I do not know how complicated that will be.

Pros: It looks good in the car and sounds good. I am still adjusting the sound to my liking. The ability to use a ipod or ipad for music was the main reason to get this unit. I will enjoy using an ipod for my music in the future

Cons: The i.d. on the buttons are small and hard to see at a glance.

    - Impressive features for the price. Pandora control! 7 band EQ! Remote control! Variable color display! The list goes on and on. Clearly, a great choice at this price. BTW, I highly recommend the Crutchfield outlet deals, either that or look for a coupon code. - I bought this for my wife's car and she approves. I chose this unit because it has so many of the features I wanted at a price I am happy with. But, along with features comes the learning curve. It takes some practice to set up every one of the options. You will need the manual to remember what some of those menus are for. Not the most intuitive head unit. But there are several different ways to configure your system with this receiver, and that is a huge plus. It's very flexible. Make sure you read the manual to understand your options. - Upgrading from the factory, single-DIN 2001 CD player, sound quality is a major improvement. I already had some basic Kicker coaxial speakers in the car, but this Sony CD receiver made the bigger difference. - My build quality nit-pick is that the speaker outputs on the wire harness were such a tiny gauge that I had trouble stripping the wire without cutting one or two strands off. It seemed to be less than 20 gauge wire, but the setting for 22 gauge on my wire strippers was cutting a little too much. Maybe my fault, but it was frustrating. Sony seems to have skimped on the wire harness.

Pros: Pandora and iPod control, variable color display with lots of color scheme options, 7 band EQ, wireless remote, front USB AND Aux inputs, flexible output configuration, high-pass and low-pass filters with 3 different slope figures, sound quality improvement over a weak factory stereo, listening position settings, installation kit included from Crutchfield, (worked perfectly).

Cons: Some menus and operations can be a little confusing, skimpy wire harness, no face-plate case, no Bluetooth, no HD radio.

We were happy with the factory radio, marked Toyota 16814 (front), other than its lack of iPod support. Requirements for the replacement included a well-tracking CD player (and no dropping of the front panel to use it), a great analog radio section with actual physical preset buttons, and great iPod support. Sorta got the last one. :-( Crutchfield recommended the Pioneer DEH-4400HD. Problem with that model is its serious volume knob issue (see its reviews). That, the horribly bad manual, and learning that Super Tuner has for years been an ad slogan instead of reality led me to drop it and go with the next best: the CDX-GT565UP. I would have been OK paying a couple hundred $ more to get a truly good tuner and/or CD player mechanism. But more money only buys more Features that we do not want nor need: BT, nav, video, etc. Research made clear that *not enough people care about great radio nor CD any more*: there isn't a great FM section anywhere in anyone's lineup. I'm a former "stereo" repair tech (repaired over 1100 CD players). I've amassed a collection of **extremely** difficult to play/track manufactured audio CDs and test CDs. The factory player tracks extremely well, as one would expect for a 2001-vintage CD player. The Sony tracks like a so-so mid-1980s player. Just 9 years ago, one could go to any discount store and buy a $10 portable CD player which would run circles around this one in tracking ability. As co-inventor of the CD format, Sony should be ashame

Pros: The display is good and so far we're not having trouble seeing it in bright sunlight. The colors are fun, but personally i'd rather have a better tuner and/or CD player. Has RDS and can play CD-RWs (not that we care about this), unlike the factory radio. Sound quality is fine: no better nor worse than the factory radio over the factory speakers. iPod functionality is so-so on the Sony and great in "passenger mode" on the iPod itself. AAC for flash drive files Dims with dash lights

Cons: Mediocre tuner section no good for weak FM stations, lousy CD player tracking on defective discs. Quantitatively, measured mono sensitivity of our Sony is 2.5 dB worse than the factory radio. Qualitatively, the FM on the Sony "picket fences" much more than the factory radio when listening to low-powered "college" music stations. Absolute range didn't seem that different, but *listenable* range sure was! The factory radio is vastly superior at variably blending to mono to minimize noise.

Pros: Looks great, sounds great, works great.

Cons: *No scan function for radio (different than seek) *Have to switch display mode to see time *USB doesn't work for really old iPods (in my case an old iPod mini). It is taking a little time for me to get used to the new controls going from the original factory stereo to this stereo.

Crutchfield support people were very patient with my numerous calls when installing. I couldn't get the engine interference noise removed from the radio. Crutchfield sent a second unit that worked fine. They were very helpful in suggesting what to look for or adjust. I was about to give up, but made a few more calls and whatever I did, it worked. It was installed in a Lexus since the original unit was terrible. Now with the color choices on the Sony, I can choose to match the car color. The usb slot for iPhones or IPods are handy. The parts needed to conform to the original look worked out fine.

Pros: Quality of product, accessories to fit the car and make it look coordinated, the sound, easy to use, color options on display, the telephone support whenever a question or problem arises, the quick arrival and ease of return if necessary.

Cons: The small size of letters and codes on the display.

Great bang for the buck. At Crutchfield, this is the cheapest head unit in the Sony line where they freely provide the harness and dash kit. If you don't already have these items, it makes no sense to spend $99 on a radio and then $20 more for the accessories. Step up to the $120 radio and get the accessories for free. This radio has the features I wanted. I paired it with some cheap Pioneer 6.25 inch speakers at $40 a pair. With an online coupon I got the head and 4 speakers for $180 shipped and with all the mounting hardware and accessories. This gives me a lot of decent quality sound that I can play from many sources. Keep in mind that if you want a lot of bass, you'll want to step up to something with a pre-out for a sub. If you don't need a lot of bass, this head unit is a great place to buy in.

Pros: Easy to install. Has a lot of feature inputs. 8 band EQ, LPF, and several other advanced features.

Cons: I wish the EQ were easier to modify so that I could change it based on what I'm listening to. Hard to knock it, though. This is going to be typical for most stereos. If it really bugged me I could spend the $40 and mount a separate EQ unit.

This is an extremely good value for the money. The Sony unit offers many advanced features. While it's power output is low for some people, as a daily driver, it was everything I could ask for. In a convertible, you don't need a lot of power to hear the sound. Also, in a convertible, you don't want a really flashy unit for thieves. So all in all the unit sounds great and was at a great price. I wish I could post a picture of the finished install. It looks great!

Pros: Lots of great features on the Sony unit. Crutchfield support is #1, bar none. The instructions were clear and easy to understand.

Cons: I did break one plastic mounting part. Use Amazing Goop (I found it at Lowes) if you need to glue it together like I did.

I recently purchased this unit to replace my factory unit and i love it. It was very easy to install even though i used a relocation kit to move my head unit down to the lower DIN of my dash to make room for 3 gauges in the double DIN with my HVAC controls. The colors on the harnesses matched up perfectly except one, the one for your power antenna, it's a blue wire to a blue w/ white strip wire. aside from that they all were the same. even with my stock speakers (which i will be changing soon) this unit gives a noticable increase to quality. Great great product.

Pros: easy installation. great sound improvement, lots of features to customize the unit with. built in security *beep* that reminds you to remove the face plate when you get out of the car.

Cons: I only have one, the button placement on the face plate could have been slightly better. I could see this being a problem with people with larger hands then myself.

    Nice!!

It was with some trepidation that I proceeded to purchase this unit without having physically seen it. Unit arrived two days after purchase (awesome), installation was a breeze (even for a novice) - even better is the quality of the unit. For the price, and all the add-ons thrown in by Crutchfield you couldn't ask for better.

    Pros: very easy installation

    Cons: none to date

I like the product overall. The user interface is clean, though there are sooo many options that it seems more complicated than it really is. I wish the unit and especially the buttons were more solid/beefy feeling though. I have some vehicle-specific installation complaints/suggestions if Crutchfield is interested in those to improve the Honda Civic Si 2002-2005 (EP3) MasterSheet. The DIN cage that came with the radio didn't seem sturdy enough to lock itself to the dash trim plate for my car. I ended up using the mounting brackets from the replacement trim plate. The screws that came with the radio seem to be a specialty item and it would be nice if Sony shipped some slightly longer ones to help with fitting into more cars' radio mounting frames.

Pros: Allows iPod control from either the head unit or the iPod itself. Tuneable button/display colors that works with my car headlights for dimming control.

Cons: The buttons are tiny and feel kinda chintzy compared to the factory unit it replaced. There was nothing wrong with the factory radio (it worked fine, sounded good and had solid controls), but I wanted USB/iPod/AUX input. Mild 'pop' noise heard when doing some switching operations.

    I am impressed!

This unit had everything I was looking for; XM Ready, RDS, Ipod connectivity, USB and Aux input, Pandora (which I haven't used yet). Thanks to Crutchfield, the installation was simple using the hardware and instructions included in my order. Sony has a wide range of preset sound options and if you don't like any of them, you can create your own. I like having the ability to control my Ipod from the head unit or the Ipod. Initial set up is fairly easy, but read the book to understand the terms used and what the different parameters are. Overall, I was very impressed with the unit and the sound quality.

Pros: RDS, Ipod connector, Sirius/XM ready, Multi-color display,

    Cons: Nothing

My husband installed my toy in my 2003 Honda CRV, Honda wanted $1500 to replace the whole dash unit when my 6 CD changer died. O Heck no! So I went shopping, this unit had a little of everything and a great price to boot. We got the conversion kit so I have a little cubbie below my unit, at night time...the inside of my car looks like a disco bar with all the flashing colors. The sound is crisp, I am still learning the controls since this was installed a day ago. One cool accessory with this unit, a remote control!

Pros: The 35k colors, not knowing which one I like so I have it set to do all.

    Cons: Nothing

    1998 Honda Accord
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this in my '98 Honda Accord with stock speakers and no external amplifier. I truly can't find anything wrong with it yet. Here's my brief review: - The 7 preset EQ settings are very nice. "Space" seems to be the cleanest sound to me with most music. - AUX in works well for listening to "Audible" audiobooks from my phone. - I have the display set to very bright white during the day (headlights manually off), but for night-time driving (headlights manually on and with the illumination wire on receiver connected per manual) the display is a dimmed yellow-green color to match my vehicle's dash colors. - USB flash drive works well. Sound is clear & crisp. When testing, I can even power off the stereo, remove the flash drive, remove the faceplate, etc.... and plug everything back in. The flash drive somehow remembers which song it was on & resumes playing from there. - Thankfully, I can disable the annoying beeps the faceplate makes when I turn off the car. - The rotary volume control and buttons on the unit are very responsive and "clicky", which I like. - Removal and reinstallation of the faceplate is very easy for me, though I do have smaller hands. - AM / FM reception is very good so far. I haven't driven to the edge of the range for local radio stations to give a technical assessment of its reception. However, with an FM sensitivity spec of 8dBf, it is a very strong FM tuner.
