Our take on the Sony CDX-GT630UI

by Ken Nail
Sony

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

If you want a car stereo that combines great sound quality and the ability to play all your favorite media, you've found your match. The Sony Xplod CDX-GT630UI CD receiver offers outstanding sound quality, plays MP3, WMA, and AAC files on disc, and features convenient front panel USB and auxiliary inputs for your portables. Plus, you can connect and control your iPod® without the need of an optional adapter.

Find your way to that file fast
Sony's packed the CDX-GT630UI with an impressive set of controls for navigating your iPod's music. Quick BrowZer lets you search for a song by genre, artist, or album — just rotate the knob to find the song you want, then push to select. If you've got lots of songs on your iPod, the Jump control leaps through them in 10% increments. Switch to passenger control and your backseat passengers can select tunes with the iPod's controls.

Sonic tools
Sony's DM+ circuitry restores the details lost to compression, so you enjoy the best possible sound from your MP3, WMA, or AAC files. Customize the sound with EQ3 Parametric feature, which includes seven preset tone curves and a 3-band equalizer. The Dynamic Soundstage Organizer adds presence and life to your music by raising the soundstage up to ear level — it's especially effective if your front speakers are mounted near the floor.

Building a system?
You'll find three sets of preamp outputs for adding external amplifiers or a powered subwoofer. Built-in high- and low-pass filters ensure you send your speakers only the frequencies they're best equipped to handle.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

    Features
    External Device Controls

    Features

Drive S: The CDX-GT630UI features the Drive S chassis for improved sound quality and durability in the CD mechanism, audio stages, 12-volt power supply, and tuner section. The CD mechanism includes a suspension to resist shocks, a motor that draws less power, and a fast low-current pickup that improves durability and CD playback accuracy. The 52W Peak x 4 channel S-MOSFET Power IC produces clearer, more accurate sound, less distortion, and a higher signal-to-noise ratio than previous designs. Power consumption is reduced to half that of previous designs.

Disc/Compressed Audio Compatibility: The CD receiver will play CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RW discs. The headunit also supports CD Text. The receiver will also play MP3, WMA, and AAC compressed audio files stored on a CD-R or CD-RW. Below are the requirements and features for compressed audio file playback:

    • ISO: compatible with the ISO 9660 level 1 / level 2 format, Joliet/Romeo in the expansion format, and Multi Session
    • The Maximum number of:
      • folders or albums is 150 including root and empty folders (MP3, WMA, AAC)
      • files or tracks and folders contained in a disc is 300 or less if a folder/file names contain many characters (MP3, WMA, AAC)
      • displayable characters for a folder/file name is 32 (Joliet), or 64 (Romeo)
    • ID3 Tag: ID3 tag versions 1.0, 1.1, 2.2, 2.3, and 2.4 apply to MP3 only. ID3 tag is 15/30 characters (1.0 and 1.1) or 63/126 characters (2.2, 2.3. and 2.4). WMA tag is 63 characters.

Compressed Audio Display Information: The CD receiver's display can display the following information: Track number/Elapsed playing time, Disc/Artist Name, Album/Group Number, Album/Group Name, Track Name, Text Information and Clock.

Note: The Album/Group number is displayed only when the album/group is changed.

Quick-BrowZer: The unit's Quick-BrowZer feature allow you to search for a track on a CD, iPod, or from your connected USB Mass Storage Device easily by category (Genre, Artist, Album, or All).

Note: When entering the Quick-BrowZer mode, the repeat/shuffle setting is canceled.

Digital Music Plus: The Sony CDX-GT630UI features Digital Music Plus which is an enhancer technology used to reproduce detail and high frequency sound from compressed audio.

Radio Tuning: The CDX-GT630UI allows you to manual tune or seek tune AM/FM stations. In the Local Seek Mode, the unit will only tune in stations with very strong signals during Seek tuning. The Mono Mode allows you improve poor FM reception by selecting a monaural signal instead of a stereo signal. The radio features 5 memory bands to store and receive AM/FM stations. You can store up to 6 presets each in FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1 and AM2. Other tuner features include:

    • Best Tuning Memory (BTM): This feature selects stations with the best signals within the selected band and stores them in order of their frequency. You can select from FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1, and AM2.
    • Manual Tuning: You can manually tune and find your favorite radio stations one by one for FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1, and AM2.
    • Auto Tuning: You can use the seek button to help you search quickly through the available stations and then choose your own presets from these available stations.

EQ3 Stage 2: EQ3 Stage 2 offers 7 EQ presets, each of which has a preset value for 3 bands: Low (60Hz), Middle (1kHz), and High (10kHz). The EQ presets and the band values are as follows:

    • Xplod: Low: +6, Middle: 0, High: +2
    • Vocal: Low: +2, Middle: +6, High: 0
    • Edge: Low: +4, Middle: -2, High: +5
    • Cruise: Low: +2, Middle: 0, High: +1
    • Space: Low: +2, Middle: +3, High: +6
    • Gravity: Low: +6, Middle: 0, High: +2
    • Off (flat): Low: 0, Middle: 0, High: 0
    • Custom: Adjustable -10dB to +10dB for each band (Low, Middle, High)

Dynamic Soundstage Organizer (DSO): Sony's Dynamic Soundstage Organizer uses proprietary circuitry to induce subtle phase shifts, simulating a sound source that is placed higher than the actual speakers in the vehicle. For example, when the DSO function is used in a vehicle equipped with speakers mounted low in the front doors, it creates virtual speakers in the dash to raise the soundstage. This unit offers three levels of DSO, each with a larger and higher soundstage. You can store the DSO setting for each source.

Loudness: This feature allows you to listen to your music clearly at low volume levels by reinforcing the bass and treble. The bass level is increased to +4 dB at 100 Hz while the treble level is increased to +2 dB at 10 kHz.

Preamp Outputs: The CDX-GT630UI contains three pairs of RCA preamp outputs for the front and rear channels and for subwoofer operation. The subwoofer output is non-fading with a low pass filter with a selectable cut-off frequency of 125Hz, 78Hz, or Off. The subwoofer volume is adjustable from -10 to +10. Note: No preamp output voltage figure given.

Front Panel Auxiliary Input: A front panel stereo 3.5mm mini-jack is provided to allow the connection of a portable audio source. Just connect your portable cassette, MD or MP3 player to this unit, and you can listen to the audio from the portable player through the speakers in your mobile audio system. The volume level of the auxiliary input is adjustable from -8 to +18 dB to compensate for any difference between the unit and your portable device. The aux input can be deactivated in the menu so it doesn't appear as an available source.

Motion Display: This feature shows moving patterns and a spectrum analyzer on the display when turned on.

Auto Scroll: This feature allows long displayed items to scroll automatically across the display when the track is changed on a disc.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: Pressing the Off button once will turn off audio output, but the clock display and button illumination remain on. This makes the clock display and face/button illumination "Keyed" instead of "Unit On" only. To turn the unit off completely, you must press the Off button for two seconds.

Dimmer: To change the brightness of the display you can set the CDX-GT630UI to one of three dimmer modes - Dimmer Auto (dims the display automatically when you turn your vehicle's lights on), Dimmer Off (deactivates the dimmer), and Dimmer On (display always dim).

Auto Off: When installing in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you can set the unit to turn off all lighting a set amount of time after you turn the power off. The Auto Off feature can be set to 30 seconds, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, or No.

Flip-Down/Detachable Face: The CDX-GT630UI features a manual fold-down face which provides a larger display and greater protection for the player's CD-slot and your CD discs. In addition, the unit features a detachable face for theft prevention. The radio does not come with a protective face case.

Eject: The CD disc can be ejected with the power off. The CD player will automatically reinsert the disc if it's ejected but not removed for 15 seconds or more.

Mounting Angle: For flexibility of installation, this unit can be mounted between 0 (horizontal) and 45 degrees.

Wireless Remote Control: The headunit comes supplied with an IR wireless remote control (RM-X151) for easy operation.

Optional Wired Remote Control: This unit also has a 3.5mm minijack input for the optional RM-X4S wired rotary commander. In addition, the PAC SWI-PS steering wheel remote interface is compatible with this head unit. The SWI-PS interface allows you to retain the use of your steering wheel and/or rear seat radio controls when replacing the factory head unit in select vehicles with a Sony head unit with wired remote capability. In some GM vehicles, this adapter allows you to retain heater control buttons as well.

    External Device Controls

iPod Control: The GT630UI has a front panel USB port which allows you to connect your iPod via a single cable (iPod dock connector-to-USB--cable not included with the head unit). The headunit will allow audio playback, control, and charging of your connected iPod. When the headunit is placed in the Passenger Control mode, you can control the iPod directly using the "click wheel" and other controls on the iPod. Compatible iPod models include:

    • iPod classic (80GB, 160GB)
    • iPod classic 2nd gen (120GB)
    • iPod 5th generation (video)
    • iPod nano 1st, 2nd (aluminum), 3rd (video), 4th generation
    • iPod touch 1st, 2nd generation
    • iPhone and iPhone 3G

Note: Passenger control is not available on the 5th generation iPod and 1st generation iPod nano.

USB Input: The receiver's front-panel Type-A USB input can also be used for plugging in a USB Mass Storage Class device or Sony Walkman digital audio device. The head unit can play music files stored on the USB device in MP3, WMA, AAC, or ATRAC formats. When playing a USB device, the display can indicate track/album/artist/genre number, track/artist/album/genre name, elapsed playing time, text information, or clock. The headunit can recognize up to 128 folders with 500 tracks each when connected to a USB Mass Storage Device. A sliding cover protects the USB input when it is not in use. The unit is compatible with Sony Walkman USB audio players up to 16GB, as well as Sony Micro Vault USB memory drives up to 16GB. HD Radio Ready: The CDX-GT630UI is compatible with Sony's optional XT-100HD add-on HD Tuner (sold separately) through its UniLink Bus connection. HD Radio technology, where available, offers higher quality sound than conventional analog broadcasts and receives text data. HD Radio provides FM broadcasts that are equal to CD sound quality and AM broadcasts that are as good as analog FM stereo broadcasts. HD Radio also provides a variety of data, including station name, song title, artist name, album name, etc. Once connected, all AM and FM broadcasts are received by the XT-100HD. HD appears as an additional source, with five preset banks; HD1 (FM1), HD2 (FM2), HD3 (FM3), HD4 (AM1), and HD5 (AM2). In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting it is possible to choose from up to 8 multicast programs (HD1 to HD8 and analog). There are also data programs for each program.

    Incompatible with 2004 Prius

Written By Tommytennistoo, Orlando, FL on Monday, May 23, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Had this unit professionally installed and while the Sony seemed to work, my entire heads up display became erratic and failed to display various panels. Unwilling to do without the display, I had the original system re-installed.

Still have the Sony in the original box should anyone be interested...

    Very Impressive Head Unit

Written By Devan, Norton, OH on Wednesday, January 06, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This head unit was worth every penny. The sound output is crisp, clear, and phenomenal. The sound field settings & tuning options allow you to produce your own perfect audiophile listening experience. The only problems I have with the head unit is as follows: One, USB devices other than IPods can only have up to 128 folders. I usually have my music organized by Album-Artist-Songs...so one artist takes up two folders to begin with. Secondly the illumination only lights up the buttons, and not all of the text above the numbers, so using the head unit to switch to the next album, pause, ect. took some time to learn which one is which at night. Regardless of these setbacks, it's a great product!

    Not too wild about Sony

Written By Ray, Denver, NC on Wednesday, October 28, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have always ordered Kenwood recievers from Crutchfield. This time they talked me into this Sony unit. The install is not as neat as a Kenwood, the unit moves a little in the plastic surround Crutchfield sent along with it. The volumne button also controls if you push on it the highs and lows and tones of your listening pleasure and I seem to hit it often when I hit a bump in the road when I am adjusting the volumne while driving. Also, if you have Sirus components installed and hooked to your Sony radio, it does not show up on your radio screen properly and it is hard to change channels. You have to go thru every one by one to get to the channel you would like to listen to. Not too crazy about this product and I would rather have a Sirus seperate unit instead of running the screen thru the radio.

As the title states, this was an outstanding value. The radio sounds great, and the USB input makes it easy to navigate, play, and charge my iPhone 3G. It was very easy to install in my 2004 Audi TT Roadster.

    Awesome!

Written By FocusUTG, Kitsap, WA on Sunday, October 18, 2009

I love the USB port on front, that's pretty much all I use. I also like the big buttons and selection knob, very easy to use and navigate. My only issue has been with the USB, and I'm not sure if it's the stereo or my drive. The stereo only reads 3 out of 4 of my albums on the USB drive. I've tried everything except a new drive ($20). And it's not limited to specific albums, it's almost like it will only read 3/4 of the music. However, it worked perfectly fine for the first 6 months, and other than that problem it works great, which makes me think it's the USB drive. Anyway, Great stereo, plenty of EQ options for a subwoofer and etc...Highly recommend.

Overall this is a great replacement for your stock radio. I love the front USB port, really no need for CD's anymore. Love how much better my stock speakers sound, love all the different variations as far the equilizers go. The one and only con I have about it is the removal or install of the face when you take the face out of the car, just takes a little getting used to, hope I don't end up breaking it.

    Good Value for Money

Written By Ram, Rolla MO on Tuesday, October 06, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have an 03 Nissan Sentra and I wanted to change the stock stereo as the left channel (both front and rear) went dead. I have an ipod nano 4G, iphone 3G and iphone 3Gs (my wife's). So I wanted a stereo which has front USB and ipod control as I did not want to mess with my ipod while driving.

This stereo is perfect for what I was looking for, great clarity even on stock speakers, excellent FM reception (picked up new channels that the stock did not). Controls the iphones and ipod as advertised. Also charges all the equipment. Does not have bluetooth or HD radio built in - but if I needed this I need to break $250 mark for a decent brand and I was not ready to spend that much. Overall a nice piece of equipment for what I was looking for. I will be changing the speakers to get little more juice.

The installation was a breeze (when I take it into account that this was my first stereo install), crutchfield techs were a great help - thank you!!

I'd recommend this for anyone looking for a nice stereo equipment to replace the stock

    Good Headunit

Written By Lisa, chicago, il on Tuesday, September 29, 2009

I always buy Sony headunits because I love how easy they are to navigate and control. This headunit is no different. I chose this unit because it is pretty cheap and has great features. The front usb and aux inputs are very useful. It does not have bluetooth but that is fine with me because I have no use for it. Installation was quick and easy and I recommend this unit.

Overall - nice stereo with many features; would recommend to a friend.
Pros - Replaced the OEM stereo in my 2000 Altima. Installation was a breeze - less than 60 minutes! Installation instructions were outstanding - anyone can do this! Very nice sound; looks great!
Cons - radio reception does not seem great; many of the buttons are very small.

    it Just Works!

Written By Rachel, Brunswick MD on Saturday, September 05, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After calling and speaking to Ann about a couple different options I ended up going with the Sony CDX-F5705X for three reasons:

    1) I already had a Sony receiver installed in this car that had just died (it was nearly 6 years old, so I got my money's worth).
    2) The other receiver I was considering had a menu driven system for getting to your station presets.
    3) The Sony offered very good iPod/iPhone integration.

Now that I have had the system for a couple weeks, I can report that it meets all of my needs and sounds great! I have owned several Sony car stereo units over the years and they are top notch. Sony quality is hard to fault as they seem to know how to build good quality into their products even at lower price points.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit replaced a factory radio in a 95 Chevy Pickup. This was my first stereo installation. I took my time and it went together easily using the provided instructions.

The stereo has several sound enhancement settings, not just LOUD, TREBLE or BASS. I also installed new speakers, however before doing so, I compared the factory radio to new Sony using the factory speakers. Wow! I expected it to sound terrible, but it produced twice the sound quality.

Not many complaints here. Wish I had looked more into the 930 model, as it has many of the features I like. Too late now! Specifically, 1) rear USB hookup would be better for my IPOD 2) Limited display and annoying scroll of artist/album/song titles. 3) Still getting used to the control functions for IPOD, not real easy at this point.

The Sony performs as advertised. Great sound, just missing a few bells and whistles.

    Excellent iPod/iPhone radio

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this in a 2006 Jeep Wrangler along with the Sirius boxes. The hard part was actually finding room for the Sirius boxes underneath the Wrangler's cramped dash but I finally found spots for them in bizarre places where I had to stick them w/double-sided tape. The radio itself was dead simple to install with the adapters and instructions that Crutchfield sent. The results are nice, I put the radio into a mode where I can select playlists on my iPhone 3G, drop the iPhone into the cupholder, and from there can go forward/back with the radio's controls.

There are some features I wish it had that it doesn't have, such as a better display that would display more information about the song currently playing without you having to manually hit a button to scroll through things, but you'd have to pay significantly more money for that. For the price, this is a great radio.

    Sony CDX-GT630UI

Written By Ernie, Austin, Texas on Saturday, August 08, 2009

    Overall really good receiver.

Here is my list of pro/cons:

    Pros:
    Sound is great
USB iPod / iPhone interface (works with 3G with OS 3.0) is great...but (see below in issues section)

    Cons:
Display is glossy and too curved and gets washed out when under direct sunlight
    Channel buttons very small

    Issues:
Maybe the community or Critchfield staff can help me out or have seen this issue:
When using the radio the balance (left/right) and fad (front/back) work perfectly, but when using Iphone (3G with 3.0 OS) or Ipod (gen 5 160GB) balance works but not the fad (back speakers don't work). This occurs on both the USB & AUX jack. Maybe I am missing something or have a defective unit...

    Thanks,
    Ernie

    Works with 3GS

Written By SnowCrash, Boston USA on Friday, July 31, 2009

I just installed this in my 2006 Jeep Wrangler TJ. I wanted to let everyone know it DOES work with the iPhone 3GS with software ver. 3.0!! Controls and charges! No issues what so ever! Install was a breeze, though I had a Sony CDX-GT510 so wiring harness and everything was already setup. Just removed the old deck and put in the new one. Again if you currently own a Sony install is a breeze and if you are looking for a deck the DOES work with the iPhone 3GS this is it!!

    Great Stereo and great service!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I went with Crutchfield for one reason - their excellent support and all the
supplied accessories and I am glad to say I am not disappointed at all!
Thanks to Crutchfield technical support, I was able to install this stereo in
about an hour or so on my Toyota Matrix. It took longer only because there
was another wire harness physically attached to the old stereo to keep it in
place and I couldn't take the stereo out till I was able to separate the wires
from the stereo. Rest of the instructions were crystal clear (with photos).
    Stereo is good.
One more thing I have to say is this: This model supports both my IPhone
1gen 8Gb phone as well as my old ipod 4th gen. clickwheel 30Gb
photo/video model (though this model is not listed as supported in Sony's
manual/web site). I am able to control both these either from Sony or from
the ipods. I am in ipod heaven!
Also tested it with mp3 cds and with the xplod mode and DSO on, it
produces an amazing sound (better than my home stereo - a Denon!)
I could have got the same model for 20$ less somewhere else, but the
support and service is worth more than 20$ for me and so I consider buying
    from Crutchfield as a bargain.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this car stereo in December and have been very happy with it. I just wanted to notify potential buyers that the unit is not compatible with the new iPhone 3GS models. I'm not sure if it's the phone itself or the 3.0 OS, but either way it no longer works. I'm hoping Sony will offer a firmware upgrade to fix this problem. The head unit will still charge the phone via USB, but it is no longer able to control the phone.

I had an original iPhone (the 2G model) and this stereo worked great on it. I never tried that model with the 3.0 OS before I sold it and upgraded to the 3GS, so I'm not sure where the problem exists.

Still a great head unit, just not quite as useful as it was before.

    Great stereo!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off Kudos to Crutchfield for including everything I needed because the install went smoothly and everything worked properly.

I love this stereo because it has so much versatility, you can really fine tune the sound, & it's very easy to use. You can tell someone really thought through this. Features like an AUX input level allows you to boost the power for those small mp3 players to make them sound good, different color displays to match your instrumentation, and being able to connect most any music source to it.

Through the front AUX input, I can connect my XM Roady XT sat radio receiver, my 30gb MP3, or 4gb Creative MP3 player. In the USB connection, I was told the limit was 8gb, but I had to try a 120gb USB hard drive. The stereo sifted through the myriad of data folders, found my few songs and played them! I don't know of any long term issues with connecting a USB hard drive, but that opens up even more possibilities for music. With all these connection options, it's no surprise I don't have any comments on the radio.

The sound quality is good and plays plenty loud with factory speakers. I added some Polk dbs and it really sounds good and still has plenty of power. When you get this stereo, plan on a road trip because with all the connection options, you can literally play days worth of music.

    Great for me

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this mainly so I could connect my iPod to the front of the unit. It
was affordable and I really like it. A serious audiopile may want to spend
more but I love this stereo. I installed this in my Ford F-250 and the install
went very well. The only problem I had was one of the connections I made
for one of the speakers came apart. Had to pull the radio and reconnect.
After that it worked great. Also, the cover plate for the dash was tight and I
had to do a little filing on the rim of the hole in the dash but, after that it fit
great. It was only a minor fit issue. The instructions were great and right
on. The only thing I would have done is to use the crimp on cap connectors
for the wiring as shown in the instructions. I used crimp on butt connectors
and had one pull apart as I was installing the unit. I had to pull the unit
and reconnect. I also taped the bundle of wires togather. A few zip ties
would have been even better and cleaner. The wiring harness and the
cover plate worked just like they were supposed too.

    Fantastic value

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had the Sony installed for a couple of weeks, and in the time found a few nits to pick, but mainly I have high praise for it.

Getting the negatives out of the way, I think the preset buttons along the bottom are too small, and there is you have to remember their position, or else look every time, because they are right in line with and the same size as the non-preset buttons in the row.

Also, the preset buttons control other functions such as "change album" and "pause" on an iPod, and while you can see the button labels for those functions during daytime, at night you have no clue because the labels are not lighted up. I'd say that's the biggest negative.

On the positive side, it was extremely easy to install, and it sounds terrific. I absolutely love the front-panel USB connection, and it works flawlessly with my iPod Touch. You control the iPod completely with the radio controls -- the iPod just plugs in and then you don't touch it again.

The quality of sound with an iPod is great. No hissing or distortion, just clean sound.

There's definitely a little learning curve when first using this unit, but once you spend a little time with it, you'll love it.

my first aftermarket radio in about 6 years. has all of the features i wanted...3 pre-outs for amps....many ways to tailor the sound...including great options for my subs....aux in on front of unit....and great day or night visability.
also has a usb input which i have yet to use.
really happy with all the sound options available!

my only complaint is that when you open the face to access the cd player, the volume knob hits the mounting kit lip, and will not open completely. easily remedied with a dremel tool.

    very happy with my choice.

This radio is easy to use and requires virtually no reading of the manual. At this price it is a steal. I chose it for the Ipod connection and to free up my stock CD player DIN. I bought the Sony unit for price and the reviews I had read. I rated it a 4/5 because a 5 would have to make the unit perfect, which nothing is.

Crutchfield made the install easy and I added the HD unit to my purchase/install.

Cons: Volume knob is sensitive to pressure and you can find yourself dialing through the equalizer settings instead of setting the volume.

I have not tried the remote yet.

    It's a nice little setup.

    Sony CDX-GT630UI

Written By Paul, Milton, MA on Wednesday, March 25, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this receiver primarily to have a way to play my IPOD Touch in my Ford Focus station wagon without having to use an FM transmitter. This receiver meets that requirement admirably. Further, the ability to play music from USB memory sticks is an unexpected bonus, allowing me to reserve my Touch for video podcasts, books, and apps. The Sony receiver's controls are intuitive and easy to use. I love the browse function that allows my to quickly find albums and tracks on my memory sticks. The receiver allows me to use the Touch interface directly as I had hoped. Installing the receiver took longer than I expected, judging from other reviews, about four hours: 1.5 hours to figure out how to mount the receiver in the Ford Focus dashboard adaptor insert that came with the receiver; about 1.5 hours to to wire the receiver harness to the factory harness adaptor; and 1 hour to remove the factory receiver and install the new receiver in the Focus dashboard. The installation would have gone quicker had the Crutchfield installation instructions been less cryptic and the photographs clearer. Overall, however, I am very happy with my purchase.

    So far, So good!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this deck and had it professionally installed about one week ago. So far, so good! I love the fact that I can just push my USB driver in and have all my songs at my finger tips. It has made my stock speakers sound much, much better that my stock stereo (obviously).
It has way more functions than any aftermarket stereo I have ever owned before and I still have not gone thru them all or even figured out what they all are.
But for the price I am quite pleased with the performance thus far.

I do have one complaint though it does not come with a face case:( I thought this was standard with all detachable face decks but they skimped on that one here. So if you do want to remove your deck and your purchasing this one you will have to buy it separately and you might as well throw it in now with the free shipping.

I bought this to replace the factory radio in a '97 Sentra. I love the front-mounted USB port and auxiliary jack! The unit produces a good sound. Don't forget! "Beep" and "DEMO" modes must be disabled-Thanks Crutchfield! (You'll see what I mean, if you get this model.) Has removable face-plate and hidden CD player.
Pros: Options for play back/search. Front-mounted ipod/USB access (get an extra cable); options for searching thru music; ample power/volume.
Cons: TINY buttons (the included remote helps!). Equalizing is tricky and takes some getting used to. (Read the manual and USE THE REMOTE!)

This radio has great sound and features for the money. The options of AUX and USB front inputs put this unit ahead of more expensive ones. The installation instructions are good, and I was able to install in one evening. So far we have not had any issues with it. It does make your stock speakers sound better, so you may want to wait before you order speakers with it.

Perfect match with Chevy Silverado 2500 HD

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit was a perfect fit for me. Being my first install, I was a little
concerned about the vehicle modification warning, but decided to trust the
Crutchfield team to walk me through it. It turns out I did not have to do
any cutting at all and the unit slid in with plenty of clearance. Also, with GM
you need to get the vehicle chimes adaptor, which was simple to install and
actually allowed me to turn the volume down giving me an added benefit. I
hooked this up with 4 Infinite reference speakers powered by an old 4
channel Alpine amp and Blaupunkt powered sub. The unit has all the
preamp plugs you need and it was just plug and play. The unit looks nice
installed and the controls are simple to figure out. I love the USB
functionality at your fingertips. I have 3 8 gig thumb drives that hold
my travelling music collection. The equalizer options, sub controls, and
filters all give you the control you need to shape the sound to your liking
and get the best performance possible. Crutchfield support during the
buying and installation process was first class. Do not hesitate to buy this
unit, you will not be disappointed.

Simple to use for digital music!

Written By Andrew, Tampa, FL on Tuesday, March 03, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My criteria for purchase was based mainly on ease of use with digital media including flash drives, mp3 players (including models other than iPod), and front aux input. I have a 1 hour commute and like to listen to audio books to pass the time. After reading editorial reviews of this unit on another website, I chose this unit. I replaced a factory unit in a '99 Ranger.

As mentioned in some of the other reviews, I have been very impressed with this unit on managing usb flash drive content. Especially the feature of picking up in the same spot in an audio track when the unit is turned off or changing to a different source (i.e., aux input, tuner, or cd). I have an 8 gb flash drive with loads of music, books, and data files (which cannot be read of course), and the unit easily navigates by folders and filenames.

The Sony sounds better than the factory unit I replaced. The controls are very intuitive; however, the buttons on the reciever are small. The remote is easy to use with larger buttons and a simple layout - easy to use by touch (safer while driving). In my opinion, the weak points of the unit are the detachable/flip-down face and small buttons. The detachable face is a little flimsy and the buttons are hard to read. I never detach the face and have no need for CDs with the flash drive input.

Overall, a great unit that is well worth the price.

Good sound, nice features, but ...

Written By VK, Albuquerque, NM on Tuesday, March 03, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off, this is my first time ever ordering from Crutchfield as well as my first time installing a car stereo -- it went as smooth as can be. As for the unit itself, it sounded great and looked great, and the ability to change the backlight from blue to green was perfect since all my Subaru gauges are green. However, while I do consider myself tech savvy, two weeks in and I'm still scratching my head as to how to perform simple functions without error. The universal nob forces you to hit the precise combination of buttons or you're scrolling through all the menus again. Couple this with trying to drive, and it makes things interesting. Also, since only the knob and face are backlit, and the buttons are tiny, try performing any functions at night and -- unless you've had the unit for a while and are completely comfortable with the layout -- you're out of luck. That being said, I prefer electronics that are more intuitive since I hate reading instruction manuals. But for those of you who don't mind pouring over a manual, this unit won't be so bad.

This stereo is amazing. This was the first head unit i had ever installed and it took less than an hour to install and only a glance at the directions. I installed it in my 95 dodge and the only thing i am dissapointed in is that it makes my stock speakers sound good. I am dissapointed because not only did i order the head unit, i also ordered two new sets of speakers. my stock speakers sounded blown and flat with the stock head unit and the sony has resurrected them completely. The ipod control is clutch and the remote makes it amazing. The options are nearly unlimited and are so easy to learn in a short time. I am 120% satisfied with my whole crutchfield experience!

    Great for 2006 Jeep Wrangler

Written By Thomas, Greer, SC on Thursday, February 26, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this unit in my 2006 Jeep Wrangler along with Alpine SPS-13C2
speakers in the roll-bar and Polk MOMO 460 speakers in the dash. One
problem: after making all of the connections called for in the instructions,
the stock powered sub in the center console was not working. Re-read
instructions. No help. Contacted Crutchfield support and, after a few tries,
was told to connect the AMP REMOTE lead to the POWER ANTENNA lead.
Who knew? Crutchfield rep said he would look into adding this connection
to the instruction sheet. This corrected the problem and everything works
great now. Sound is awesome. I listen mainly to progressive rock and it
really blasts with this set up. Great highs and lows. Love the features on
the Sony. Ipod works great and it even plays music I have stored on a
thumb-drive. Special thanks to Crutchfield support for their help.

this is the best deck i've ever purchased!!! and let me say i've been through about eight decks. out of 8 decks this my 2nd sony and #1 out of the 8 i ever owned. options are incredible, EQ's are exqusit (DSO best thing ever invented.) not to mention the thumb drive which is top notch. i don't even use a disk, no mp3plyrs or cd/cdrw. but YOU CAN. i just plug in my 2gb thumb drive and drive!! remote is great, i never leave home without it. Only bad thing is the face is detachable (which is fine) but does not have a carrying case...THAT SUCKED. but overall it gets 5 out of 5 for me, recommend it to all AND the price GOES.

Works well once you get past all the fluff

Written By cschauerj, St. Pete, FL on Saturday, February 14, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So I really wanted something simple. I can do without a detachable faceplate. It's something else that can break and ups the cost. Try to find a car stereo these days without one though. I don't even want a cd player. I just want something that will accept a flash drive and/or media card, has pre-amps outputs, the other basics and is quality. Since there really is no such thing yet, this was the compromise for me.

    The cons:
The DSO sound enhancement is a gimmick.
The DM+ enhancement for mp3 files is a gimmick. The both make the music very tinny, sometimes to the point songs are unlistenable. You can get much better sound using the EQ adustments and the loudness function.
The ZAP function is a gimmick. It is needless clutter.
The EQ presets are gimmicks as well. The 3 band EQ is easy enough to adjust.
The screen is a little large which isn't a bad thing at all but it comes at the expense of the buttons below the screen. They are commonly used and they are very small and hard to read.

Why did it get four stars then? Once you get past all the bad stuff, it works well. I have a 6gig music collection on a flash drive. It works flawlessly. I memorizes where it let off in a track. It can seek through a song. And the search function for scrolling through and locating tracks works great, as does the shuffle.

To some up, it does the important stuff very well.

In general, very happy with Sony unit sound and looks, but be sure to

this unit to allow using IPod controls into the receiver. There is no mention
of this in spec comparison in the catalog and you have to hunt for it on their
web site. Basically, generation one and generation five units do not allow
you to control directly from the IPod and using receiver controls is lacking at
best. If in doubt about compatibility with your IPod, call tech people at
Crutchfield before purchase. My ability to get this information was in
hindsight only and now I have the option of either using compromised unit
as is or buying a new IPod. Not a very satisfactory result in the overall
    scheme of the purchase.

Good sound quality for the price. It's packed with lots of features. I particularly like the iPod interface. I only gave it 4 stars because there's a loud beeping sound whenever the ignition is turned off and according to Sony's web site it can't be disabled. It's supposed to remind the user to take the removable faceplate with you but only succeeds in annoying me.

Bought this for my Dad's truck,Liked it soo much i bought a second one to put in my moms car.
Alot of options for the music lover..front usb for thumbdrives and will wouldn't play my 4th generation 20 gb ipod, but plays my new nano.
Has a excellent signal to noise ratio on the cd at 120 which beat my alpine at 105.
Very basic display white text which works for me, this deck replaces a pioneer in my dads truck which was distracting at night when driving, don't need jumping dolphins and race cars and bright dispalys.
One thing that might bother people is the 3 beeps it makes reminding you to take off the face plate which you can't turn off in any setting, only way to disable this is to add a external amp or search the forumns here for adding a relay to stop it.
This is my first sony car radio,so we will see how relaible they are.
    Nice radio for the price...Enjoy,
    James

    Sony CDX-GT630UI

Written By Keith, Orlando, FL on Sunday, February 08, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit to replace my 8 year old Bluapunkt after market that was going bad and had been getting extremely poor AM reception recently. I determined later the problem was the antenna (duh). The usb/IPOD interface was a neat feature, however my IPOD Mini is not supported (time for an upgrade?). The AUX port is a reasonable substitute. I like that it is on the front for easy access. The default blue color scheme is way too bright and obnoxious, but the alternate green color matches my car's other displays nicely. The removable panel seems VERY fragile I will not be using that option very often. The crutchfiled supplied wiring harness adapter asumed I had a separate amp (I found that an odd assumption), fortunately the harness for my Bluapunkt worked without modification, so installation turned out to be faster than I expected. Minor shortcomings aside this is a great unit with very clean sound. I would buy this unit again.

Excellent Stereo & Service - Buck Banger!

Written By Neil, Western Washington on Sunday, February 08, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This stereo has it all from the pre-amps large enough to power my 7 speaker system to the front jacks for easy use of my peripherals. Some of the wiring was not explained for the wiring harness, but with a quick call to Crutchfield we were able to diagnose and I was on my way. The retrofit enclosure kit seemed a little flimsy, but once installed there were no worries. The stereo looks like it was meant for the vehicle and brought out sounds that were never there before in my music. I love the plug and play USB port right in the front, how convenient and fun to put my jump drive into. Thanks Crutchfield for the recommendation, great shipping, super support, and phenomenal price and accessories for the install. You guys blow away the big box stores and the other competition!

    Great for the iPod/Phone

Written By John, Tampa Bay, FL on Thursday, February 05, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just received this Sony stereo today from UPS... Delivered on time! Thanks
    Crutchfield!

Using the included adapters, replacing my factory stereo with this one took
about 2 hours. Very easy! Thanks again Crutchfield!

I love how easy it is to use the iPhone with this. You can keep your eyes
on the road and change songs without fiddling with your phone. It's
almost too easy. The sound quality on all sources is great... Much better
than my factory Toyota unit. Really simple to use too.

Thinking about adding HD Radio later.

Note: When installing in a Toyota Tacoma (2001), the radio needs to go on
the bottom of the included "pocket", not the top. If you try to put it on the
top, the dash will not go back together and the face of the radio will not
open. This is what made the installation take 2 hours.

One issue (though I knew about it beforehand) is that "amber" is not an
option for the display color... Only blue or green.

2003 VW Golf GL -- this radio better than original

Written By John, Northeast on Monday, February 02, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this to replace the original unit which I thought was the source of poor reception issues, but I might actually be the victim of antenna corrosion. But that's another topic and story.

This radio is excellent compared to the original. Sound is great, it picks up my iPhone 3G and 16GB thumbdrive. Does not read my iPod (4th or 5th generation -- can't remember), but I haven't updated my iPod software in a long time.

Installation process was complicated ONLY because the VW harness is a GIANT MONSTER and has to be persistently coerced to stay out of the way. Otherwise, all went well. THANK YOU, CRUTCHFIELD! A local big box was going to charge me $300+ -- just for parts!!!

    Pros:
    - reads iPhone 3G
    - CHARGES iPhone 3G!
    - USB port out front
    - NICE sound

    Cons:
    - USB port out front (get a "flex usb" adapter)
    - no dimmer connection -- I haven't looked for a "hack" yet
    - no switched power -- ditto
    - buttons are very tiny for me, but this seems to be the case for any non-OEM unit
    - too much of the display taken up by useless stuff

    Other:
    - controls take a little getting used to
    - I miss having a dial to tune the stations manually

Overall, I like it so far. However, I am still under 1 hour of usage with it. If I have any problems, or fantastic experiences, I'll write another review.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

the radio is a complete package. first the appearance, the picture that you see on crutchfield is very bad. th radio is a shiny satin black and the silver is shiny chrome. its very good looking except the text in the display screen, its a white or at somes times seems an off-white wick looks to me very tacky and cheap, i think they could of did a little better on that part. to me its a big deal because the display is what you would be looking at at all times. other than that the radio is pretyy solid with user interface quit simple and easy. just 1 click of a button and you got what you need. having both aux and usb inputs is a great aset as well. i myself like that the inputs are in front vs. the back so you dont have to run any extra wires and you dont have the annoyance of having to get to your glove box all the time. (keep in mind, that this comes from a person who doesnt like sony recievers at all, i picked at a kenwood but my girlfriend who this was for liked how the sony looked better, i would of and still would take the kenwood over the sony for personal pref) that being said the sony is a well rounded unit that is set up with ease, appearance(minus the text), and top functionality.

    Great Value for the Price

Written By Joey, Boston on Thursday, January 29, 2009

I was looking for a unit that had USB compatability and an auxiliary input on the faceplate. I decided on this Sony because of the price and because I already had a Sony deck in my dash and figured it would make the wiring easier.

I was right about the wiring--I had this deck in the dash and working in 15 minutes because my old Sony harness fit right onto the back of the new Sony. The unit is fairly easy to use (the owner's manual is one of the better ones I've seen), and gives the user a multitude of options for inputs. This new Sony is a little less powerful than my old one, and I'm not crazy about the DSO feature or the EQ presets, but it's nothing that an amp can't solve.

The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because of the hassles I had getting MP3 files to play in alphabetical order from the USB input. My MP3s follow the naming convention of Artist-Album-Track Number-Track Name (Rush - Caress of Steel - 01-Bastille Day). This doesn't fly with the Sony. After much consultation with Sony tech support and my own experimentation, I put the songs in numbered folders, then stripped the file name down to the track number and track name (01-Bastille Day). This solves the problem, and the Sony still sees the ID3 tags. BTW, tech support says that 4GB is the max size for USB flash drives on this unit. And iPods won't connect unless they're certain models and are running the newest firmware version.

    '93 Civic install

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this deck for a friend & I liked it so much, it made me almost want to get one for my vehicle. Its very easy to use and well laid out. It was installed in a 1993 Civic hatchback and couldn't of been easier. Its connected to some Alpine speakers and sounds great. As usual, Crutchfield's support has been great. All needed adapters were included at no cost.

I like having BOTH the AUX and USB ports on the front and this unit does both. The display is nice and clear to read too. As noted in other reviews, having the green key button color option is great for driving at night. It matches the dash better. Its also nice to be able to talk to someone based in the US when I have questions. Crutchfield is now the only place I buy car electronics.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this unit in my 04' F-250SD. For now I'm just replaced the head unit with this new Sony unit and have the factory speakers. I took the extra time to solder and shrink tube the connector using crutchfields supplied diagram inside where its warm. The install was easy and took about 15 minutes to pull the old unit and install the new Sony unit using the included install kit.

Even with the stock speakers the it performs much better than the stock. Much more adjustability, the radio stations come in clearer and the CD player works better also. I love the front USB port and no longer carry CDs. The USB is super easy to navigate. Sony really did their homework to make the unit easy to navigate and use even if you don't read the instructions fully like I do. I give it a 5 because for the price I think you will be hard pressed to find a better unit than the Sony.

It's a great stereo for the money. It was easy to install in my Jeep Cherokee. Once installed, I can connect my ipod to it using a standard ipod usb cable which allows the stereo to charge the ipod and control the music selections as well. The only disappointment is that the stereo controls for the ipod are not very intuitative at first.

    The Future Is Now

Written By Raymond, NY Metropolitan Area on Sunday, January 25, 2009

The Sony CDX-GT630UI reads all major formats. With the inclusion of USB you can eliminate externals (i.e. ipod, zune...ect.). No moving parts using the USB drive other than the speakers. When the price comes down and purchase a 64 GB usb drive will take entire collection of cd's and move back to the wave file format. Compression is no longer an issue. When you pull the USB drive out or leave it inserted it will resume where it left off (random or sequential). Sony's amplifier and the head unit's DM+ technology enhances the sound quality of compressed audio files is excellent. Unsurpassed mobile quality recommended use's vehicle/boat/private aircraft.

Pros: Great price from Crutchfield with all the accessories included. Good power and features. GREAT support, as always from 24x7 crew at Crutchfield. Quick, free delivery. All adapters an trim kit worked perfectly. Looks very nice.

Cons: Wiring diagram a little misleading, especially regarding remote amp turn-on leads and antenna for my Maxima. Crutchfield wiring diagram is priceless. I can't imagine trying to wire this up with the Sony manual. IPOD controls do not switch to IPOD as described in manual. Crutchfield offered to replace free, but it is just a minor annoyance. I misunderstood the advertising and thought this had an IPOD cable from the rear, which I would prefer. USB port in front is okay, but ugly. USB does not work with ZUNE.

This is a great receiver at a great price. The CD player and tuner provide fantastic sound, and the front USB and auxiliary ports make it very easy play music stored on other devices. My only (minor) complaint is that a large portion of the display is used for a dynamic representation of the sound. While this looks cool at first, you quickly realize that it doesn't serve any useful purpose. When you disable that feature, that region of the display goes blank. I would prefer that the space was used to display the time of day, current equalizer setting, or some other useful information. Other than that, this receiver/CD player is perfect.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall this unit is excellent, offering great features and value. I have ripped most of my music, so almost all I use now are the mp3s loaded onto micro usb sticks that I keep in the Jeep. So much better than keeping up with CD's. Also when going off road, I do not have to worry about my mp3 player bouncing around inside the cab.

The one drawback to this unit for me is the size of the control buttons. In a rough riding vehicle like my Jeep with off road suspension, it is next to impossible to press the tiny buttons while driving. Thankfully most functions that you would need going down the road are available from the remote, which I use frequently. I have had other head units where the remote was never used, but with this one it is essential. If it weren't for this I would have given it 5 stars.

I replaced the factory speakers with some Sony XPlod and a powered Bazooka base tube at the time of install and the system sounds fantastic.

I would recommend this unit to anyone, I only wish a kit was available so that I could fit one into my Nissan Altima.

I installed this in my dodge dakota. It was so easy took me about 30-45min to install(i rewired my 78 cj5 so I have previous wiring experence). The hardest part was connecting the wires to make it neat and look good. I love that I can hook up my ipod touch or use my thumb drive also plays cd's well. The only thing i dont like about it is the alarm that beeps when you turn your key off saying to take the face plate with you(no way to turn it off). It is a great radio and wont take much time for a first timer to install(just follow the instructions). I have been using it for about a month now and after getting used to all the kool features its even better. I recomend this

Minor things I would change: 1 - Additional USB port in back 2 - The ability to override console controls and control directly from the IPOD.

    Great Head Unit

Written By tredman, Lakeland, FL on Monday, January 19, 2009

This unit is a great because it allows me to connect Ipod with full functionality via the USB port and it allowed me to use my Satellite Radio tuner and adapter from my previous installation. I liked it so much that when I traded my vehicle, I took the Sony CDX-GT630UI out of my Honda Del Sol and installed it into my new VW Rabbit (even though the Rabbit came with Ipod function for its OEM radio). The Sony was much easier to use than the VW radio.

Bought this unit for my '01 Isuzu Rodeo. With the 8 factory speakers it sounds excellent. I bought it mainly for the usb feature. Ipod Schmipod.
With a flash drive I get all the functionality I need. Am still waiting for my mini flash drive. Unit arrived in less than 48 hours.
Install was relatively simple. Had to put a little more bevel on the trim piece clips to fit the tight space between factory trim and included pocket
below the unit. I just scraped it on the concrete in my garage. I use wire nuts for electrical connections. I have NEVER had a loose wire problem and it makes for easy disconnect.
The units features are very easy to use. I spent about 10 minutes reading the manual to learn the functions. If there is one thing I don't like
is that the display does not like cold weather. It is somewhat muddled until your car warms up. Be patient or take the faceplate off and take it inside
    with you.
Last and best was the super service from Cruthchfield. The guy I talked to was ahead of me on just about everything. Ask for "DOC".

P.S. I got a great deal from their outlet store. You would swear it was brand new.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchase - Great as usual. This was put into a Honda CR-V.

Install - Removal of old took two hours. Soldering and installation took about an hour. and it worked great from the start. The stereo and the parts look like they came with the car. Kit was good and easy to install. Recommend soldering wires. I labeled all non speaker wires with my label maker. Write down serial number before you install. Very stable.

Playability - Receiver worked from the start and sound was good. DSO and EQ3 settings make for a good sound with the stock speakers. (may be replaced in future) The radio reception is as good if not better than stock. Played CDs fine and played an MP3 cd right away with good display and choices of display. I hooked an auxiliary MP3 player up to it, and it sounded great. It needed a slight upping of the decibels to equate to the CD volume. MP3 player (80gb) acting as a hard drive had no problem playing the MP3s on the drive. Remote works fine. Controls are fine, I was able to explain basic everyday use to my wife in less than 10 minutes. Also, back button will get you out of anything and is one of the most useful buttons that is almost not noted in the manual.

Overall - This is great quality and features for a wonderful price, I would easily recommend this receiver to anyone. Future expandability is great.

Would have improved - It would be nice if jacks on front were also on back for stealth installations.

1500 characters kinda ties my hands for describing the functionality of this unit, stuff that is not listed on Crutchfield. Thought it would have been helpful for prospective buyers. But here goes.

DSO works to bring the music up to your ears but you're gonna want a subwoofer to compensate. The picture gave me the impression it had a matte finish, the entire faceplate is glossy which means you will get some reflections/glare if the sun hits it just right. All blue light coloring can be changed to green, not nearly as brigth at night. Works with iPod Clasic 120. Looks good in a 97 Bravada. Has a 'LOUD' geature to boost bass at low volume level. iPod control is very intuitive, I didn't even crack the manual to figure this out. Has a clock.

Wife is happy with it and when wife is happy, everyone else is too.

    CDX-GT630UI

Written By Warren, Centerville, La. on Friday, December 19, 2008

This is my first Sony car stereo and it is so awesome. I usually buy Pioneer but they dropped they're wattage to about half of what the older models put out. This Sony CDX-GT630UI is everything I could ask for and more, the sound is so clear at any volume. It's so easy to use and it offers so much control over the sound. I wanted a front USB port for my thumb drive and it works so well, it reads the thumb drive instantly and starts playing and there is no long pauses between songs, it's lets you scroll though different folders or albums to find what you want to hear. The front aux input sounds really great when I use my MP3 player, plus you can adjust the input volume to match your cd's, tuner and USB too. I love everything about this unit. Like others have said the blue color is a bit too bright at night but the green is perfect for my car. Thanks to all the intructions and the adaptor kit supplied by Crutchfield, installation was a breeze, even though I had to call Crutchfield with a question about the ilumination lead, they quickly answered my question. I soldered all connections and have heat shrink on them so the wire harnesses look professional. This is the best cd player I've ever had and so easy to use. I can see why this model is always out of stock, get one while you can. Thanks Crutchfield, you have an excellent staff, as always.

I got this for its iPod control, and its 17 watt RMS rating. And I am totally satisfied. I am running it in a '96 Camry with stock speakers, (for now) and I am VERY pleased. Obviously the stock speakers are not great, but there is a 110% improvement over the stock stereo. The iPod controls are intuitive, and easy to learn, as are all the options. I figured it out in about 10 minutes without touching the manual. EASY to install, just stripped and matched the color-coded wires. I used.. crimp caps... instead of soddering because its easier and more removable... Installation took about... 45 minutes. I would recommend this to anyone. I suppose if you want to spend more money you could find a better deck, but for the price this deck is fantastic. I'm loving it...

    Sony CDX-GT630UI

Written By Vak, Nashville, TN on Sunday, November 23, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Picked this up as an economical Ipod/Sirius solution for my beater '98 Ranger. For the money, this is a solid deck. The sound adjustment capabilities are actually a bit better than the much pricier Alpine unit in my other car. The DSO soundstage-raising feature works as advertised, but attenuates the bass and treble - it takes some fiddling with the EQ curves to make everything come out OK. The green illumination is a dead-on match for the Ford green dash lighting in both color and brightness.

Minor gripes would be more chrome than I expected or really wanted (everything that looks silver in the photo is chrome; everything that looks flat black is actually gloss black), the lack of a rear USB port to hide the Ipod in the glove compartment (the map pocket in the Ford dash adapter is convenient here - pick up a cheap black Ipod cable to make it less visible and run the extra length out the back), and a Sirius connection that uses dual RCA cables and a separate control cable instead of an integrated one-cable solution like Alpine. Wire management could be an adventure if you plan to use the preouts to feed an amp as well as running either satellite radio or a CD changer. I skipped an external amp - the MOSFET chip does a good job powering 2-ohm Infinity speakers.

Good buy for the money. Not a contest-winner but a good call for great sound on a budget.

    Rivals High-Quality Stereos

Written By dudemo, SLOtown, CA on Saturday, November 22, 2008

I bought this stereo for my girlfriend. The Pioneer she had in her car didn't
have iPod adaptability and was outdated. She browsed the site and
pointed out this Sony to me. I was skeptical at first; I didn't think the Sony
could produce the sound quality that the Pioneer produced.

I installed this unit today and was shocked by the improvement (yes,
improvement) in sound. The stereo pushed more power from the speakers,
producing louder bass and better overall sound. The acoustics in her car
are terrible. The Sony fixed this problem with a feature that somehow
raises the soundstage, making it seem as if the speakers are at ear-level.
It also has a feature that cleans up the sound from low-quality MP3s, so
you don't get a sound that is too digital. The black and white display is
easily viewable, and the color options for the lighting look great. iPod
control is easy, and there is also a control mode that allows your
passenger to use the iPod's controls to search for songs as opposed to
    using the head unit's controls.

This stereo is a steal at this price.

    Excellent

Written By John, Parsippany, NJ on Friday, November 21, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent receiver! Wanted a receiver with simple controls / preset buttons / no joystick-like knobs, front USB, flip-down face and 3 sets of preamp/sub outputs. This had all I was looking for at a reasonable price. Installation was pretty easy thanks to the wiring harness and instructions Crutchfield provided.

    Pros:
    - Excellent sound, much better than factory Kenwood
    - DSO feature raises soundstage improving sound for many of my CDs
    - Bright blue/subdued green illumination options are good for day/night
    - Front USB is way cool: Easy to browse, remembers where it was even if you remove drive / shut down unit / turn unit back on / plug drive back in, shuffle across albums or entire device, pause, etc.
    - LPF and HPF at OFF, 80/100/120/140/160Hz, LPF phase reverse
    - Sub OFF and level control

    Cons:
    - Display a bit on reflective side (not really an issue)
    - Beeps 3 times when you get out of the car
    - No gapless playback on USB

Overall this is a great unit which I highly recommend.

For the USB you might want to go with a very low-profile drive (mine only sticks out about 2cm) and doesn't have a flashing data light.

    Works with iPhone 3G

Written By ian, Ann Arbor, MI on Monday, November 17, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I originally purchased the predecessor, the 620UI and found after installing that it supported neither my iPhone 3G (it didn't charge) or my 3rd Gen iPod (it wouldn't read - the box said yes but the manual said no).

This radio, however, supports charging and reading of the iPhone 3G, which is why I bought it. Now I can listen to podcasts and charge my phone while driving. The USB port on the front is a great feature, since it will allow me to access and control my iPod and also charge any USB device. Now I can charge/use two USB players at once (one through the AUX, charging via 12V plug)

Controls are mostly easy to use. The browsing feature is a plus. EQ controls are adequate, especially given the price of the unit.

The Zappin feature is a little silly and I sometimes will hit that button by mistake. I know what I want to hear on my iPod so I don't need it.

As far as I know right now there are no other radios that support the iPhone 3G - I'm sure they will arrive but for now this is your only option. Make no mistake, however, the radio stands on its own in this price range.

    superb receiver for the money...

Written By Norm from RI, Smithfield, RI on Saturday, November 08, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ordered on 11/1; got it on 11/4! The install kit (2001 Explorer Sport Trac) was well thought out. Soldered all connections for durability; after some fussing with the final dash fit it looks factory. Took 4 hours at a lazy pace. Sound: good pop; the vol goes to 50 and level 30 driving my 4 factory Pioneers/sub is LOUD. Controls for tone/balancing are superb - love the sub volume, which the factory deck lacked. The "DM+" improves MP3 files. Also great are Low Pass Filter/High Pass Filter settings. You can select the point where your sub drops off (i.e., can prevent it from struggling with highs) and can adjust the 4 mains via the High Pass setting so that they don't attempt low bass. Really improves the factory sound. FM & AM reception is excellent. Display - can choose blue or green button color... the blue is very bright, I make that my "day" color. At night, green is softer/matches my Ford dash lighting. Blue at night might be a tad bright ... text screen is black/white, and is very legible/large font. Color would be better, but for this price? Browsing... sorted mp3 discs/thumb drives/Walkman with ease. Intuitive design; hardly need the manual. Shuffle is good, will shuffle albums or entire device/disc. Aux In sounds great. Wireless remote is well designed. Minor beef - having a wire or thumb drive sticking out the face. Nice tweak would be rear USB/Aux inputs... Excellent receiver - great sound, expandable, plays anything USB as far as I can tell... great buy.

Incredible radio. I was searching for a radio and found this one before it was released. It's beautiful, does exactly what I need it to do, sound quality is superb, the colors between blue and green are
awesome and I normally use green at night for a not
as bright look. Installation was easy...Its a Sony...
    No need to say more!
