The Sony Xplod CDX-GT640UI CD receiver combines great sound quality and the ability to play all your favorite media. It plays MP3, WMA, and AAC files on disc, and features convenient front panel USB and auxiliary inputs for your portables. Plus, you can connect and control your iPod® without having to buy an optional adapter.

Find your music files quickly
The CDX-GT640UI boasts an impressive set of controls for navigating your iPod's music. Sony's Quick BrowZer feature lets you search for songs by genre, artist, or album — you just rotate the knob to find the song you want, then push in on the knob to select. When you need to get through a lot of songs, the Jump control leaps through them in 10% increments. Switch to passenger control and your passengers can select tunes with the iPod's controls while you concentrate on your driving.

Shape the sound
Sony's DM+ Advanced circuitry restores the details lost when music files are compressed, so you enjoy the best possible sound from your MP3, WMA, or AAC files. The EQ3 Stage 2 equalizer includes eight preset tone curves and a 3-band equalizer for adjusting the lows, mids, and highs. The Dynamic Soundstage Organizer adds presence and life to your music by raising the soundstage up to ear level — the three levels of adjustment let you pick the setting that works best for your car.

Built in RDS
The CDX-GT640UI's tuner features built-in RDS (Radio Data System). When tuned into a compatible AM or FM station, it'll display radio broadcast station call letters, along with artist, title, and album for the song that's playing.

Ready for system building
You'll find three sets of preamp outputs for adding external amplifiers or a powered subwoofer. Built-in high- and low-pass filters ensure you send your speakers only the frequencies they're best equipped to handle.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use this adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Sony stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Sony, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

    Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

    Display Features

Flip-Down/Detachable Face: The CDX-GT640UI features a manual fold-down face which provides a larger display and greater protection for the player's CD-slot and your CD discs. In addition, the unit features a detachable face for theft prevention. The radio does not come with a protective face case.

Motion Display: This feature shows moving patterns and a spectrum analyzer on the display when turned on.

Auto Scroll: This feature allows long displayed items to scroll automatically across the display when the track is changed on a disc.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: Pressing the Off button once will turn off audio output, but the clock display and button illumination remain on. This makes the clock display and face/button illumination "Keyed" instead of "Unit On" only. To turn the unit off completely, you must press the Off button for two seconds.

Dimmer: To change the brightness of the display you can set the CDX-GT640UI to one of three dimmer modes - Dimmer Auto (dims the display automatically when you turn your vehicle's lights on), Dimmer Off (deactivates the dimmer), and Dimmer On (display always dim).

Contrast: You can adjust the contrast level of the headunit's display for better day- and night-time viewing. The contrast level is adjustable in 7 steps.

Auto Off: When installing in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you can set the unit to turn off all lighting a set amount of time after you turn the power off. The Auto Off feature can be set to 30 seconds, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, or No.

Button Illumination: You can change the heaudnit's button illumination to blue or green to better match your vehicle's interior dash lighting.

    Audio Section

True Fidelity Sound Construction: The Sony Xplod CDX-GT640UI FM/AM compact disc player features a newly developed sound processor for less distortion, an S-MOSFET IC for smooth signal transmission, and a large-sized capacitor for deep bass sound.

CEA2006 Compliant Amplifier: The power specifications for the Sony Xplod CDX-GT640UI are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the CDX-GT640UI are as follows:

    • Continuous Power Output: 17 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Peak Power Output: 52 watts x 4-channels (208 total watts)

Digital Music Plus Advanced: The Sony CDX-GT640UI features Digital Music Plus Advanced which is an enhancer technology used to reproduce detail and high frequency sound from compressed audio.

EQ3 Stage 2: The Sony Xplod CDX-GT640UI features an EQ3 Stage 2 equalizer with 8 preset equalizer curves for various types of music. You can choose from Xplod, Vocal, Edge, Cruise, Space, Gravity, Custom, or Off. The Off mode provides a flat response. The Custom mode allows you to manually adjust the Low (60 Hz), Mid (1 kHz), and High (10 kHz) frequencies from +/-10dB.

Dynamic Soundstage Organizer (DSO): Sony's Dynamic Soundstage Organizer uses proprietary circuitry to induce subtle phase shifts, simulating a sound source that is placed higher than the actual speakers in the vehicle. For example, when the DSO function is used in a vehicle equipped with speakers mounted low in the front doors, it creates virtual speakers in the dash to raise the soundstage. This unit offers three levels of DSO, each with a larger and higher soundstage. You can store the DSO setting for each source.

Loudness: This features reinforces bass and treble for clear sound at low volume levels.

Three 2-Volt Preamp Outputs with Adjustable Crossovers: The CDX-GT640UI contains three pairs of 2-volt RCA preamp outputs for the front and rear channels and for subwoofer operation. A built-in LPF (Low Pass Filter) and HPF (High Pass Filter) work to deliver overall better sound, and the LPF features a phase shift (Normal/Reverse) function that reduces low-end reverberation. The subwoofer output is non-fading with a low pass filter and selectable cut-off frequency of Off, 80, 100, 120, 140, or 160Hz. The subwoofer volume is adjustable from -10 to +10. The front and rear speakers offer a selectable high-pass crossover frequency of Off, 80, 100, 120, 140, or 160Hz.

    Radio Functions

SSIR-EXA AM/FM Tuner with RDS: The Sony CDX-GT640UI features a built-in SSIR-EXA AM/FM Tuner with RDS. Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible AM/FM stations. The CDX-GT640UI allows you to manual tune or seek tune AM/FM stations. In the Local Seek Mode, the unit will only tune in stations with very strong signals during Seek tuning. The Mono Mode allows you improve poor FM reception by selecting a monaural signal instead of a stereo signal. The radio features 5 memory bands to store and receive AM/FM stations. You can store up to 6 presets each in FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1 and AM2. Other tuner features include:

    • Best Tuning Memory (BTM): This feature selects stations with the best signals within the selected band and stores them in order of their frequency. You can select from FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1, and AM2.
    • Manual Tuning: You can manually tune and find your favorite radio stations one by one for FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1, and AM2.
    • Auto Tuning: You can use the seek button to help you search quickly through the available stations and then choose your own presets from these available stations.

HD Radio Ready: The CDX-GT640UI is compatible with Sony's optional XT-100HD add-on HD Tuner (158XT100HD, sold separately) through its UniLink Bus connection. HD Radio technology, where available, offers higher quality sound than conventional analog broadcasts and receives text data. HD Radio provides FM broadcasts that are equal to CD sound quality and AM broadcasts that are as good as analog FM stereo broadcasts. HD Radio also provides a variety of data, including station name, song title, artist name, album name, etc. Once connected, all AM and FM broadcasts are received by the XT-100HD. HD appears as an additional source, with five preset banks; HD1 (FM1), HD2 (FM2), HD3 (FM3), HD4 (AM1), and HD5 (AM2). In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting it is possible to choose from up to 8 multicast programs (HD1 to HD8 and analog). There are also data programs for each program.

Satellite Radio Ready: There are several options for connecting an optional satellite radio receiver to this head unit:

    • SIRIUS Satellite Radio: To receive SIRIUS Satellite Radio, you can connect the optional SCC1 SiriusConnect Vehicle Tuner and the optional SNYSC1 Sony interface module (package item number 700SIRSONY, sold separately).

The GT640UI has a front panel USB port which allows you to connect your iPod via a single cable (iPod dock connector-to-USB--cable not included with the head unit). The headunit will allow audio playback, control, and charging of your connected iPod. When the headunit is placed in the Passenger Control mode, you can control the iPod directly using the "click-wheel" or "touch-screen" on the iPod. great receiver that worked perfectly and looks very nice

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this for my wife's 1997 Mercedes C-280; her factory stereo was on the fritz. I
used the 'Outfit My Car' guide and read the reviews on this unit and it seemed like it
would be a good unit. I purchased the PAC SOEM-4 as instructed but wasn't needed for
    this car/set up.

I cannot believe how awesome this unit works and sounds with the Mercedes Bose
system. Installation was very easy, the old unit came out just as described with the DIN
tool, I wired the new one just as instructed, slid it in and turned it on. WOW!

We thought her rear subs were blown because they buzzed a lot when the
volume was turned up but after this installation they sounded perfect! Huge volume,
range, etc. She can now use her Ipod and loves the stereo.

    Very satisfied.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Crutchfield sales suggested this receiver to me about a month ago. Now its
discontinued. Doesn't do much for my opinion of Crutchfield. I'm sure they
were trying to off load these things.
The buttons on this receiver are way too small. I don't think they could have
built the buttons any smaller. I am sure that a machine put it together as no
way could someone's hand be able to apply those buttons.
Also, this Sony receiver misses many of the folders on my Sony Walkman player.
Not much else to say except I will not trust Crutchfields opinion anymore.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace my factory unit and i chose Sony because of the good radio
reception and the aux port on the front so i could use my Zune. Not surprised at all at the
improved sound and volume from the factory speakers. I think this is the fourth Sony i
have gotten over the years and I'm never disappointed with them.

Installed in a '94 MB C220 to replace OEM that gave up. Installation was a snap with
supplied adapters. Sound is great and I really like using a USB thumb drive for storing
and playing my music. I am happy with the ability to contol the play.
Great unit, easy install and I think the sound is better than the OEM ever was.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the most part, I'm happy with it.
    The good:
Reception is good, volume is plenty loud enough. In fact, it showed how bad my
speakers are so new one are coming. Some of the features a plus. My dash has
green lights and the radio has a choice of green or blue illumination. Also
when listening to the radio, the call letters show up on the screen.
    The Bad:
I do not care for the iPOD controls. I have about a thousand albums and over
300 artists. This means scrolling through to find the album is not easy. When
using the iPOD if you scroll fast enough, it begins scrolling through the
alphabet. The radio doesn't. That means I usually need to set the album before
I plug it into the radio. Also, I have had a few problems with the radio
reading the iPOD. I will usually play the correct song, however the display
often reads an error. I'm even wondering if there might be a problem with the
    radio.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound from this little unit. Put this in our son's jeep and it sounds
great. lacks the bass he'd like, but has plenty for me. Extremely easy to use.
Works great with his Ipod and my Droid X. Nice Purchase. Installation in
Charlottesville was a snap. They even custom installed speakers in the back for
    us. Great to work with.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is an excellent receiver if you like to hook up your ipod or usb device to the unit. The unit
can keep up with your ipod scroll speed which is a good thing. The zap feature also is
something I use all the time when I just want to Browse songs. The sound quality is
excellent. The only negative i have is that the volume knob/scolling wheel sometimes is not
very responsive. But besides that this is an excellent stereo and you get your moneys worth.

Poor User Interface , espcially the most used items!

Written By Duncan, Crawford, CO on Friday, December 17, 2010

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Don't buy it. In spite of Sony's good name, this unit has very poor usability. The worst is
the fact that if you have an unsteady hand, or on a bumpy road, when reaching for
the volume control, then an inadvertant light pressure will click it into "Select
Preprogrammed Equalizer mode" and further knob turning simply alters the sound
color - not the volume. And you have just "undone" any setup you may previoiusly done.
In addition, they make very poor use of the display screen. Maybe they are infatuated by
dancing bar graphs, or some how can't remember what source (AM/FM/XM, etc.) they are
listening to, but this precludes useful infomation like a clock, or what XM channel/artist is
being played. The "display" button toggles through the single line of display, but looks
exactly like the channel preset button. Another difficult thing to change while driving.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Radio--- i love this radio 100% satisfied. I have owned pioneer and clarion head units before and both were good but i think that this sony may very well be my favorite. I just installed in my 2002 f150. Everything on this unit is great.such a huge improvement over the factory radio. I see new speakers coming soon maybe even an amp. I never had an amp before but crutchfield made this such a fun exprience that i want to put one in.--- crutchfied service is is the best- i place my order online on wednesday night at 8pm and recieved via ups on friday around 3pm. The free installation kit and wiring was a dead on fit. I did the wiring of the 2 connectors at the dining room table, which is so much easier than doing it in the vehicle then went outside to install in truck everything plugged in and worked just like it was supposed too. Total install time about 1 hour.---price--- i saved around $70 by buying at crutchfield over the cheapest place here in town.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm pretty hard on reviews so I'll try and losen up but so far I'm happy with
this head unit. Have not had it long but I've made time to play with all the
functions. I think it is a definite upgrade from the stock stereo where it was
well worth spending the added money. Key features for me: analog to digital
converter, 24 bit, Front/rear/sub outputs, change illumination colors,
detachable face plate, flip down access to CD drive.

I'm of the old school nature where I don't like a small, cramped button layout
plus I don't like the way the stereo manufacturers are going for this super/spacey
futuristic look. A lot of the stereos look over designed where I really like the
basic Alpine design but they are way over priced verses the features that they
    offer.
Did not want to spend 300 dollars when Sony offered the features I wanted at a
much lower price. This Sony unit still has small buttons and a sort of jagged
look but I think its manageable and was the best option.

    Perfect Choice

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a stereo for my wife's 2007 Subaru Impreza. The factory unit from
Clarion was OK as a radio and CD player, but I wanted to get her something with an
iPod input. I've always been happy with Sony products, and the great reviews that this
model had received made it an easy choice. As a Paul McCartney fan, I have to admit
that the title "Another Day" showing on the display in the picture was an added attraction!

As always when I order from Crutchfield, the unit arrived in record time and with
everything one could need to install it properly. Actually, I got more than I really needed,
as I was able to use the existing brackets from the Clarion unit, as well as the dash
pocket that was already in the Subaru. I had no trouble whatsoever installing it, and
finished the job much more quickly than I had expected. The only time-consuming part
was soldering the wiring harness, because I took my time and covered each of the wire
connections with heat-shrink tubing, which is something I strongly recommend to all of
    you amateur installers out there.

It looks great in the Impreza, like it belonged there all along. My wife is thrilled to be able
to listen to her iPod without using an FM adapter. It's really an incredible value for the
price, and the service and support from Crutchfield is the icing on the cake. I've been
buying all of my car stereo equipment from them for years, and I always will in future.

Great radio. Of course, any radio would be an improvement over stock. The only
feature that I will miss, is the automatic volume adjustment. As the car speeds up the
stock radio would slightly increase it's volume to compensate. My two previous
Suburban's had this feature, my brother's MINI Cooper has this feature, my '00 Volvo
V70 had this feature, and I am sure there are MANY car manufactures are putting this
into their stock radios. At least this Sony gives you the option to auto dim the
Alpha/Numeric display when you turn on the headlights, that is a nice feature.

I just wrote a review saying how terrible this unit was, but I decided to go
back and re-check my installation of the unit, and although I couldn't find
anything wrong, when I put it all back it sounded MUCH better. I still have
issues with the USB not picking up the music from my device (although it
recognizes it as a Nokia product, weird), but the sound is pretty good. It has
considerable power but the sound isn't very clean. I'm still messing with
settings but I wanted to amend my review since it seems to have been for a large
part, my error. I also want to add that the sound stage function works very well.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am a first time crutchfield customer and have to say what a great experience its been,
shipped the same day I placed order AND I got it the very next day, when I called for a
quick question I didnt have to sit and wait even 2 minutes or talk to any "bot", I got a
person on the second ring and my question answered quickly A+++++ crutchfield
    reputation seems well earned.

Anyhow so far I am loving my new stereo, put it in a YJ wrangler, took about an hour and
half to replace the old one and put in the new(new at this so it took a bit longer). Fairly
easy to put in and seems to work great. All my music sounds wonderful, the iphone and
ipod controls are great(I use a 3g iphone) and the sound quality is pretty good, the
controls are a bit annoying as you can use the spin wheel to change volume and
settings but you have to manually click a button to change the radeo channel and or
track. The colorscheme is nice and it looks like a expensive stereo.
It will even play apps from your ipod such as the "police radio" app, now I have a
Emergency Scanner without actually having one!

My only problems are how annoying the controls are, the fact that it does not switch back
to "clock" while playing a sound track(most stereos do this, I hate having to press a
button each time I want to find the time) and taking on and pulling off faceplate could
have been made a bit easier.

Overall a good unit especially if you have a USB device.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Stock unit for my 4Runner needed to be replaced. Looking for the best value, I ran into
this Sony unit. It had everything I was looking for and more. The more comes from the
value added with everything included: vehicle specific harness, compartment pocket and
installation guide. All were included at no extra cost! In addition, shipping was free! And it
took less than 2 days, (VA to MD). Installation was just as easy.

Please be aware, although the Sony unit has ipod controls, when an iPhone is
connected to the unit via USB, it was never compatible. Possible conflict with OS4 (new
software for iPhone). The alternative was using the AUX port provided in the front of the
unit. It works fine, but I just wasn't expecting it.

I installed this in my 2004 Chrysler Town & Country, replacing the standard factory radio/CD player. It works exactly as it should, sounds great, and I couldn't be happier with the receiver. One of the really nice things about buying from Crutchfield is that they present a lot of information in a way that lets you easily compare a wide range of receivers that fit your car. In the process I discovered that smart shoppers will take these reviews with a grain of salt. Often people make much ado about nothing. For example, based in the reviews, I expected to be bombarded by eardrum piercing beeps from the radio after the car is turned off. Turns out you get a teeny little "eep, eep, eep," which my wife, the technology hater thinks is "cute." Crutchfield included everything I needed to make the installation and it was a breeze. This was my first purchase from Crutchfield, but you can be sure I'll be back for more.

Reasonable and affordable media player solution

Written By Kevin, Kalamazoo, MI on Friday, September 03, 2010

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

    Positives...
Easy install (98 Subaru Legacy) aside from having to splice all the wires. Excellent
volume knob for those who like to fine tune. Nice sliding cover over the USB slot. Sound
quality is nice. Excellent resume features -meaning it picks up where you're either current
playing or where you left off.

    Negatives...
The unit doesn't default to "Playlist" style playing. Instead, at each startup, it defaults to
    "Artist" (?). It's unfortunately that it doesn't lock-in the user's preference. The
accompanying remote is by far the easiest, if not only, means of navigating. If you plug in
an iPhone it locks the "iPod" areas and requires users to use the stereo. Meaning you
can't thumb to an artist, playlist, etc., hit "play," and hear it through the stereo. The
processor is slow to fulfill a request. Not painfully slow. It's just won't be as fast as your
media player -which you're likely use to. Honestly, my only issue is with how Sony
handled navigation. They resorted to buttons when we're all use to touch, slide, or dial
    controls.

    Conclusion...
If's a nice stereo for the price. The only reason I would turn to another unit is if I learned I
could navigate my iPhone from both the phone itself AND the stereo.

This Sony CDX-GT640UI replaced an older discontinued Sony CDX CD Receiver in my
fishing boat. The old receiver just stopped working...wouldn't power on.

Replacing the old receiver was a breeze since they had a common bracket or
mounting plate. Plugged it in using existing wire harness and it powered up just
    fine.

This new receiver sounds great with lots of extras. CD player is
good...haven't had a chance yet to try on rough water. Seems to pickup a lot
more FM stations than the old one. I haven't tried the USB or AUX in yet, but
they are pretty common nowadays since I have them on my new truck.

I'll need to watch the volume...otherwise I'll scare the fish.

turning it back on, the song restarts from the beginning when connected to my Sony
Walkman. Not sure if this is a Walkman issue or something in the head unit that makes
it do this. Overall, I have no complaints with the quality of sound, functionality or

Just recently installed this in a 2006 Subaru Imprezza. Works great for my iphone and thumb drive. Installation was easy with the wiring harness, just had to call with one question specific to my car.
Sound is great - sounds better via usb hookup than auxillary. Control can get a little confusing and loose your place in the story [I do audio books mostly] and I have to unhook phone and find my place again with the phone itself. Iphone 3GS - I have not downloaded 4.0 yet.
I also hook up via auxi as I can use it as a "bluetooth" type set up for actual phone calls. Just need to quickly change it to aux and answer the phone, works great.
I still want to play with it some more, but I am usually driving alone and can only play and change things so much. Have not yet tried the cd player, but I have no doubts it works fine. The beeps heard when vehicle turned off are fairly mild and easily ignored.
I hope this helps people looking, I know that I scoured the reviews before buying! Gave it a four because the controls are a bit confusing and I loose my place alot when I am just trying to change the sound itself.

Just installed in my 1999 Tahoe. Hands down, way WAY better than the stock radio and the aftermarket Pioneer 1.5DIN, neither of which supported MP3 playback. Three main reasons for my purchase: 1) MP3 playback 2) the front USB port and 3) the front AUXILLARY port. Not too crazy about iPods yet so I really like the fact that I can just plug a thumb drive with pre-loaded songs into the USB port. And the sound is so crisp and clean. Well worth the money spent. I highly recommend this unit. This unit is paired with a Sony Xplode 600w amp that drives all the component speakers. My two 10" Kicker Competition subs are driven by a 1200W SPL amp.

It has everything I was looking for in a stereo (Ipod control, RDS for tuner, front USB input, subwoofer output and control, CD player, and reasonable price). The product video for this on Crutchfield's website also helped make my decision to buy it. The radio also looks good in the console aesthetically (chrome finish looking volume control, large display, and even though my interior lighting is greenish, I prefer the radio's blue lighting over it's green lighting). I did a lot of comparing of different stereos and I kept returning to this one. Extremely pleased with my decision.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered this head unit based on many positive reviews. It worked quite well with my iPhone 3G but I ultimately ended up exchanging it for an Alpine CDA-105 for the following reasons.

    1) The sound quality on the Sony was quite good, but like all Sony audio products it didn't fully agree with my ears. I prefer a "warmer" sound. This isn't a criticism on the Sony, just personal preference.

    2) The front USB plug was slightly annoying, I'd hit it with my hand and it felt like after a few months of this I'd either get used to it or break the port. I didn't like having to unplug the cable every time I removed the face. I can see how people would like having the jack on the front, but ultimately I decided on a head unit with a rear usb plug and routing the cable underneath the unit.

    3) This was the final reason for sending the unit back. When I plug the phone in for the first time I could hit the "Shuffle" button and cycle through different shuffle types. Then I'd arrive at my destination, turn off the vehicle and remove my phone. When I came back it would resume where I left off except that it was no longer in Shuffle mode and I had to back out of all the menus, start playing another song and THEN press "Shuffle" again. This was highly annoying after only 3 days of use.

All in all I would not discourage anyone from buying this unit. The price is amazing, the looks are fantastic but if you think the above issues I had with it might concern you, give it some thought.

Read the reviews and bought this receiver for my 17 year old's 2002 Nissan that had a blown left channel. Not a bad color match on the trim piece we picked and the fit is good. Decent power and the amount of features for this price make it a best buy. The most used options are not buried in the menu and are accessed easily. The D/A converter in the unit is an audible upgrade. It sounds quite nice with he stock Panosonic speakers. The adapter cable and instructions were perfect. The quickest install ever! Very pleased.

    Great deck!

I bought this with my ipod in mind, which worked great. then I started using my Motorola Droid which was even better. Now I've cram packed a 4G flash drive with about 16 hrs of music, and just leave it plugged into the deck. The deck reads all mp3 tags, has a great search option so you can scroll through all your tags by artist and select a particular song. All my friends are impressed by this deck. This receiver provides plenty of options to get the desired sound for your system, I've always been happy with Sony's car audio decks.

All in all, Awesome deck, especially for the going rate. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone.

Just have to spend a half hour on the manual! lol Got to give it to MIke though! He is one heck of a salesman! I am very happy with this purchase.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Delivery was prompt and installation was easy. Unit was installed in our 97 Toyota Camry. I was easily able to remove my old stereo and install the new unit myself. I went on-line to get instruction to remove my old unit - basically involved popping out the trim kit surrounding the car stereo and temperature controls. Then it was just a matter of removing four bolts holding the stereo, sliding the unit out, and unplugging the antenna and wire connector. I then matched the color coded wiring on the harness kit with the colored wiring on the unit wiring plug - take the time to make solid wiring connections (solder and cover with black electrical tape). After the wiring connections were solid, I plugged the harness kit into the vehicles' plug connectors, plugged the unit connector into the unit, slid the unit in place, placed the bolts and trim piece, turned on the key - and --- a beautiful sound came out of my factory speakers. Worked perfect first time - no hitches. The DSO feature is really nice for getting a great sound out of your existing speakers. FM reception is great, and CD sound is also top quality as well. Unit is very easy to program after just a brief review of instruction manual. I like have the radio station preset buttons. I hope to be using the USB port soon, but for now I am enjoying the radio and CD's I haven' listened to for a while. It is a dramatic improvement from the factory stereo.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the CDX-GT640UI with my iPod in mind. I have a first generation iPod and had to hardwire an adapter into my Honda's factory unit. Well, the factory receiver died, so I wanted a usb connection on a new receiver. I love the fact that this unit has a usb jack on the front, so I've not only loaded my iPod up with podcasts, but I have a couple usb flash drives full of music mp3's that I keep with me in the car all the time now. Check out Sony's website about the compatibility of usb drives, but the ones I have work great (4mb each). The sound quality of this unit is a little better than OK. I guess it's a trade off - my factory unit had a very impressive sound quality (and it was a base model at that...) so I was slightly disappointed in the sound quality, despite the 3-band EQ options. But given the ease of iPod interfacing and the convenience of using usb flash drives to access TONS of music in the car, I can live with a slightly less than perfect sound quality. Pros: easy to install in my Honda, customizable EQ, ease of navigating iPod and flash drive directories as well as direct plugin. Cons: could be better sound, hate the beep that reminds you to remove the faceplate when the ignition is shut off. Note: have to flip faceplate down to eject cd's. Passenger mode for iPod only works on 2nd generation iPod and later.

    So Far it's great!

I have had the Sony GT640 about 2 weeks and it meets/exceeds all of my expectations. This was my first self-car installation and with all of the help from Crutchfield, everything went smoothly. I have a Hyundai Elantra '06. The collar/frame that snaps in place around the stereo at the end wouldn't fit on my car behind the paneling, so I just left that piece off. It's there only for looks and you can't tell that the stereo is missing anything. The sound quality is several levels above my factory stereo. I am really enjoying this product.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I would like to start by saying that I am not an audiophile. I am not the type who gets fixated on what my car stereo looks like or what neat little techie features it has.

I found the Crutchfield site while looking for a fitment guide for my truck. Boy, I certainly couldn't be happier that I did. The install kit was a breeze. Instructions and pictures were clear and concise.

About the unit itself. I have absolutely no complaints about this unit. CD works and sounds great. Tuner is one of the best I've ever had. I love the front USB port. I don't have an Ipod but I use a flash drive to carry my MP3s with me and it works great. My Sansa plugs in to the front AUX port and sounds great. I mean no complaints.

I really like the RDS feature the unit has. It doesn't necessarily work with all CDs, but for an MP3 cd or flash drive it really is nice. Navigating a large amount of files isn't the easiest thing to do as each folder is an album. But for just having a good playlist, set the shuffle feature to on and enjoy.

If you are looking for a new unit for a vehicle and aren't really keen on the idea of spending $400 or so for a premium unit, I highly recommend this one. It may not have all the bells and whistles of some, but it's hard to beat. I'm very pleased with both the stereo and Crutchfield.

    Nice Unit for Smart Phones

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I like the unit so far. It has good sound, makes my factory speakers sound much better, and I love the versatility of the aux and USB input.

What actually drew me to the product was the iPod passenger mode, where one could control the iPod directly. I was disappointed to find out that if your iPod can play video, the passenger control will not work. What iPod doesn't play video at this point? The shuffle? What a major bummer. It's a stupid setting really because one could just use the Aux input and control it directly. The downside is you don't get to charge your iPod/iPhone.

Had I read a bit more carefully, I would have discovered this before the purchase. It's not a deal breaker, but don't count on using a USB to directly control your iPod. You'll want to use the Aux input for this, unless you want to use the units media browser. Which is decent, but lets face it, the iPod user interface is second to none.

Good buy. Good price. 4.5 stars overall.

I wanted to purchase a deck that would play music from my Iphone 3GS (about 10 gigs worth of music on it). After researching different decks, I decided on this one after reading the various reviews and that it was Iphone 3GS friendly. I also wanted something that would be able to have connections for a Subwoofer. The deck is awesome and does everything I wanted it to do. While using the Iphone, the music will stop playing until the phone is done ringing or after your done talking on it. After you are done, it resumes playing where it left off. Took a bit to learn everthing about this deck, but works well with my 500 Watt Alpine Amp and 12" Alpine Type R in a custom ported box.
Crutchfield service was great! I got a harness, face plate, and installation guide for my 2004 Honda Civic Coupe. Install took about 30 min and had no problems. I will be coming back to Crutchfield for my future car audio purchases. Crutchfield is to car audio as Newegg is to computer parts.

Been using the factory radio in my car for 6 years, but now that I have an iPhone was needing to replace it. Found the other reviews to be very helpful and I agree with what they say. First, this radio does indeed work with an iPhone 3GS, and the sound improvement was amazing. My factory speakers sound so much better, and the EQ gives me plenty of flexibility. Installation was easy, and the Crutchfield wiring harness worked like a charm. The color option of blue or green, the button layout, the easy to navigate menus and the iPhone connection/charging at the same time makes this a great radio worth every penny.

I installed my Sony on Sunday, it took about an hour. The most difficult part was getting
the plug out of the back of my factory stereo. All the instructions and the install kit that
came along with the stereo explained the process in simple terms with plenty of
illustrations. The stereo sounds great with my factory speakers, works equally well
using a flash drive, an iPod, the radio or playing MP3 CD's. Great stereo, easy to install,
easy to operate and a company that is a pleasure to do business with.

I replaced the factory radio in my 2000 Ford Ranger with this unit and I'm impressed. I like that I can have the green background to match my interior lights and it's quite easy to navigate. I only have two small gripes: I wish the clock could be displayed permanently somewhere no matter what other type of display you have going on. There is also a small lag when searching for music on my iPod. When scrolling, a number displays, then the name of the artist, album, etc. Not a bid deal, but trying to find a specific artist or playlists takes a little too long. Otherwise, I'm very happy with the purchase.

I can simultaneously take phone calls while connected! It's a really pretty product and removal and replacement of the faceplate is very, easy and convenient!

Clean sound, a bright clear display and easy MP3 navigation are important
features to me. I did a lot of research and decided on the affordable Sony
CDX-GT640UI. Boy, am I glad I purchased this unit. I removed the factory
stereo in my Dodge Ram Quad Cab and installed the Sony without an amp and with
stock speakers. I've been using a 16GB USB thumb drive loaded with music and
the files/albums are very easy to navigate. And the sound, the Sony unit's
advanced circuitry brings out the best in my MP3 music - I can clearly hear
every aspect of the music with great instrumental separation. One cool feature
(among many) is that you can navigate through your albums and change unit
settings while still listening to your current music selection. Although I had
high expectations about this Sony unit, I was very surprised at the amount of
bass and overall great quality of the sound. Thank you Sony and thank you

I order this radio for my wife's 1997 Mazda Miata. The installation kit was a great fit and had easy to follow instructions. Installation was quick and easy, and the parts fit very well.

The unit has a very good sound and the menus are easy to use. Someone complained about the beeping when they turned off the unit. I am not sure why that was such a big deal to them. The unit only beeps three quick series of two beeps and it lasts only about 5 seconds.

I would highly recommend this unit to anyone. Also my Crutchfield rep was very helpful through the buying process.

I was looking for an affordable receiver with iPod USB support to replace the factory system in my 2004 Nissan Altima. I was so tired of using my FM transmitter with my iPod because of the constant static interference. The sound quality from this unit is worlds apart from what I was used to with the transmitter. I love the built-in EQ settings (I use 'Xplod'), and the DSO setting really helps lift the music from the floor to my ears with excellent clarity. The display only has two colors (blue & green), but that's not a deal-breaker for me. The Quick-BrowZer feature is very helpful as well. I have thousands of songs on my 80GB iPod, so I am quite thankful I don't have to scroll through each individual artist or album. The unit even remembers where I left off on my playlists after I unplug my iPod and shut off my car's power (very impressive).

Installation was a breeze with the help I received from Crutchfield support, and this was my first time! The installation kit looks clean and professional in my dash.

I highly recommend Crutchfield based on the quality of service and expertise. The unit ain't too shabby either.

    Great Unit

Written By John, Cape Coral, Fl on Monday, January 04, 2010

This is just what I have come to expect from Sony. I have used Sony head units since 1984 and have never had a failure. Great unit with all of the features you could want. I have a few issues, the first is that I part of why I ordered this unit is the green display but it doesn't match any green dash I have seen including mine. Issue two is the size of the preset buttons, they are very small and hard to find quickly in traffic. They are hard to see in strong sunlight but amazingly easy to find at night (Jeep with no top). Third is the control dial (volume) is too touchy, sometimes you try to adjust the volume but end up in the set-up menu (the ride is not the smoothest in a Jeep plus some bad roads but still too touchy). Over all a great unit.

    Great Deck

Written By Adam, MI on Friday, December 25, 2009

This is a great head unit for the money. It has A LOT of features. Sony improved the ability to browse through your iPod library especially if you have a big library. With this headunit, you have the ability to jump through your library quickly by using 10% increments or just scrolling with the dial in real time. I had an older Sony headunit and the browsing was so slow that I had to disconnect my iPod, change the song and then re-connect it. Similarly, with the CDXGT640UI, if I or a friend wants to change the song on my iPod without disconnecting it from the headunit, there is a way of doing that. The only drawback is that the iPod won't get charged while it's connected. The 6 channel preouts also are a plus if you are building a system. DSO really seems to bring the music off of the floor in my small car and into my ears with a great amount of clarity. I have this deck connected to 4 Sony 4-Way 6.5" speakers and a 10" Rockford Fosgate sub and it sounds great. I don't listen to the radio but I did test out the RDS capabilities of the unit and it did display the artists name and other info which was cool. It illuminates blue and green but the blue setting is a lot brighter than the green setting. The only problem I have, minor at best, is that the forward and reverse buttons on the left side of the headunit are kind of hard to press sometimes.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound quality of the unit is beyond what I had expected. I am still using my 2006 Corolla's stock speakers and it sounds great.

The unit is quick with browsing and the Zap works flawlessly. I also like that I was able to adjust alot of the display features. I dont like the equalizer bars and all that sorta stuff so I turned it off.

My one complaint is that I can't get my iPod Touch (2nd Gen) to work with the unit. Sony told me to use their $30 "dock" cable. If I were to do this it would completely go against the reason I bought it.

    Best value for iPod users

Written By Rick, St. Charles, MO on Friday, December 04, 2009

I was looking for a unit that had a front USB port that also gave me the ability
to control my iPod from the iPod itself and from the head unit if I wanted to.
Like many people, I have lots of songs and don't want be forced to have to
search for a song on a little, 1-row screen while driving. Also, I tend to
switch back and forth from my radio and my iPod so I wanted a unit that has
buttons for station presets on the front with a user-friendly layout. The
CDX-GT640UI was the clear winner. I also wanted a radio that was HD ready but
does not have HD built in as I've read reviews saying that HD signal will cut in
and out on the highway and can be more of an annoyance for not much of a
benefit. I have a 2000 VW Jetta with the Monsoon system so I was a little
worried about a complicated installation with the factory speaker amp; however,
it could not have been easier with the color-matched wiring harness! The
interface layout is simple and functional; the iPod control from the head unit
and remote is easier than I thought it would be, the sound quality is excellent
    - even over the Monsoon stereo unit! I recommend this unit to anyone with an
iPod or iPhone who wants to use it for music in the car. For me, I was sick of
using a tape adapter and having to drive while digging around for my charger
when the iPod battery would die with wires everywhere. Now it's just one cable
to keep it charged and integrated without the headphone jack so the sound
    quality is amazing!!

The wire connections were the same color code as the Kenwood in my motorhome, so the hook up was easy to figure. Crutchfield supplied a bracket that fit the dash perfectly and gave me a slot for storing my iPod; that is a big improvement over the original stereo. I like the two different lighting color schemes; one matched the Ford instruments well. The main reason I bought this stereo was to have it work my iPod efficiently, and have the remote work my iPod from the motorhome main cabin while we are parked. This stereo did both jobs very well and recognized all the artists, songs, albums, etc. on the iPod. It is less convenient to select on the stereo face display than the iPod display (more clicks, slower to scroll, not as intuitive) but it works fine. If you don't like that, you can just use the jack to jack input and control the music from the iPod but the iPod won't charge. Volume is good, radio reception is good. I've not bought a new car stereo in awhile and I admit I'm impressed with the features and quality at this price. I'm happy to recommend this unit.

Purchased this unit to replace the factory unit in my 2003 Highlander. Our purpose
was to have a unit for family trips that would work with our iPod touch 3rd gen and
Sony Walkman. This unit does both from the USB connection. We can control the
iPod playlist functionality better than the Walkman. In terms of output and quality
of sound reproduced, we couldn't be more pleased. Can't wait for our next trip.
Installation was straight forward, read the instructions twice, Crutchfields speedy

chassis side brackets that the technical person was not sure about, but I was able
to figure it out after looking at the instructions again - and would not knock down
my evaluation of the unit based on that call. Be very happy ever since, wish this unit

I needed a new radio for my 2002 Ford Explorer the factory one finally quit, so I ordered this Sony receiver to replace it. This Sony came with free freight, free adapter kit and free wire harness. My order came in about three days and everything was safe and sound. When I was looking at this one on line I checked out the video for the installation process and thought to myself, hey this should be easy. After looking at the installation instructions and going out to my car to check it out I said to myself, "i don't think so". So I called the local store and had them do it for $55.00 and it only took them 45 minutes.
I watched them do it and without the correct tools i would have needed a new dash. Anyway the receiver sounds fantastic, quite an improvement over the factory sterio, the controls are easy to use and the instructions are easy to understand. i give it a thumbs up.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm not an audiophile so I was looking for features rather than the sound beyond the
hearing of humans & most dogs. I didn't want finicky, fragile controls or joysticks to
break off or demand enough attention to cause an accident. I got it in this unit & then
some. Just press the knob to desired adjustment & adjust with the knob. Radio preset
buttons also are helpful in keeping an eye on traffic instead of the radio.

The sound quality is fantastic, even with factory speakers. It sounds better than the
factory unit which was the top of the line option. It has an amazing amount of adjustment
of highs, mids, lows, & sub. Installation was a breeze with the free installation parts
    supplied by Crutchfield.

The USB port is another nice feature. I can rip & store more CD on a USB memory stick
than I could fit in a CD changer. The unit remembers where it left off, on the USB stick,
when you start it back up. Some people might complain about the limit of folders & files
but USB drives are cheap. The flexability of IPod control, either in unit or the IPOd itself is
nice. The auxiliary port completes the package.

The only cons I have are pretty nit picky. It doesn't have a mute button (I got used to the
one on the factory unit) & green display to match my other green displays would be nice
(at least the key button color can be changed to green).

    AWESOME STEREO

Written By Anonymous, Spencer, WV on Saturday, October 31, 2009

Awesome stereo at about any price, but for this money, it's a steal!

The stereo is extremely easy to operate, has great sound and tons of features. I like the fact that it still has plenty of buttons on the front for easy operation. It has Sony's Dynamic Soundstage Organization, which really works. It features RDS. (shows the name of the song on the radio) The display changes from blue/green. It supports the Ipod/Iphone, and even allows you to control it from the Ipod, itelf. USB and Aux ports are right on the front. It has both high and low pass filters for using a subwoofer. The display is large. Another feature it has that many have discontinued, is a 'local' button for the radio. GREAT stereo.

I teamed this with four Kenwood 6x8's and an Infinity Basslink, and can't say enough good things about the combo. I'm TOTALLY satisfied! It has to be one of the best deals going! The only thing it does not have is Bluetooth.

    Highly recommended!
