Some people like things perfect. Sony's CDX-GT650UI CD receiver lets you set things up just right with an outstanding combination of sound controls and customizable display features.

Shape the sound
Sony really put a strong emphasis on sound quality in this receiver. An updated amplifier and redesigned power supply deliver cleaner sound with more low-frequency punch, while its high-quality digital-to-analog converter gives you outstanding CD playback.

Sony's Advanced Sound Engine gives you some powerful sonic tools. The EQ7 equalizer offers seven adjustable frequency bands, with eight easy-to-use presets, so you can compensate for your car's acoustics. Listening Position uses signal processing to set up a perfect stereo sweet spot wherever you want it in the car. And DM+ Advanced circuitry restores the details lost when music files are compressed, so you enjoy the best possible sound from your iPod® or thumb drive.

Shape the look
Sony's Dynamic Color Illuminator offers 12 preset colors or over 15,000 customizable color choices, so you can set the receiver's screen and button illumination to match your vehicle's lighting scheme — or your own personal style. You can even choose colors for day and night display, or colors that synchronize to your music.

Plays your media
Your media library is covered with the '650. It plays MP3, WMA, and AAC files on disc, and features convenient front panel USB and auxiliary inputs for your portables. Plus, you can connect and control your iPod® without having to buy an optional adapter. Sony includes special SensMe software that lets your organize your music into playlists that match your mood, scene, or location.

Ready for system building
You'll find three sets of preamp outputs for adding external amplifiers or a powered subwoofer. Got a powered sub? You can use the built-in filters to remove low bass from your speakers, so the receiver's built-in amp can do a better job of keeping up with your sub.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use this adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Sony stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Sony, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

I bought two of these, one for my car and one for the wife's. Install could not be easier with the installation kit and instructions provided and it looks like it was always there. I chose this one first for the fact that it was Sony but specifically because it has ample power, an AUX in and a USB port. I know it sounds stupid and a bit AR but it was also very attractive to have the ability to customize display color. I always found it irksome to have amber dash lights with a green stereo. Intuitive to program and use. Sounds great and is packed with features. You can customize the display color to match your dash lights exactly or have it display in random colors for the disco effect. Comes with a remote too, for your RV or "shaggin' wagon"?

Pros: Great sound and plenty loud unless you are a 18 year old, USB slot, lots of features, custom display colors, removable faceplate, clock, remote.

Cons: A rear USB port would have been nice, allowing a hidden extension cord to put a thumb drive in a discreet place instead of straight out of the dash. A mini SD slot hidden in the faceplate would also be awesome feature (hint, hint Sony) The music management program supplied is gimmicky and a waste of time. The beeping that is heard after you turn the car off is a bit annoying as other reviewers have pointed out but it does give you a moment to pause and ask yourself if you should take the face

    Excellent Head-unit

Written By Mike, Denver, CO on Sunday, October 09, 2011

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

    Short take: Excellent Head Unit.

After an extended period of research on about 50 'cheap' head units, I bought two of these; one for me and one for my wife.

The sound quality is standard Sony - excellent. Lots of features that you can play with to tweak the sound and display, but you can also just install it and go and it performs great.

I've used an iPod, Sony Walkman, and USB flash drive to play music and the sound quality is superb (at 320Kbps), with the best sound quality coming from the iPod. I wish it supported playlists with a flashdrive/walkman but it only supports them with an iPod.

Complaints: none. Other reviews complained about the beeping of the unit when you don't remove the faceplate. My kids sing to it, it isn't loud, and only lasts 5 sec...lighten up. Another complained of difficult setup. If using a phone or TV is difficult and/or you can't read, you may have problems. If you don't get good bass out of this receiver you need better speakers - it's not the receivers fault. The time resetting due to being out of range of a radio station is a simple CT on/off setting. RTFM.

I agree that the SensMe function is a bit silly, but so what, I just don't use it. If you are seriously into your electronica and are emotional about the difference between Chicago House and Detroit Techno, you will enjoy the SensMe feature. It's basically bpm sensing software. I haven't used it and am not going to...Korn and Slipknot's bpm is relatively the same.

    One of the best............

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great price , Lots of Power.. but the setup is VERY HARD... The volume control is the main control, so while your driving it goes into setup mode and can't turn up the volume. If you go out of range of a radio station that updates the time the radio loses the time..To set up the sound takes a 18 yr old a hour to setup..If you like playing with the radio for hours this is the radio for YOU...

Better visibility but lost the rear USB port

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this stereo as a replacement for a previous Sony Xplod stereo in my Jeep Wrangler. The previous one was great, it just died after too many water drenchings in my open vehicle.

First, the Sony XPlod's iPod search interface is the best around -- very easy to use in the car, which is important when you cart around about 30 days worth of digital music everywhere you go.

And this model shows improvement in the face readout -- the color cycling stuff is silly, but things are much brighter and more legible in the bright sun of my jeep.

But... the SensMe stuff? silly. silly silly. Seriously, you're supposed to transfer your digital library over to another interface to allow it to color-code your music?

The thing I really don't like is that before I had a nice rear-mounted cable that went into the glove compartment where I could mount my ipod. Now, all of the Sony models have gone to a front-only USB interface... so now I have a lovely white ipod cable hanging out the front and no real safe spot to put my ipod while bouncing around in the jeep.

sound quality is great. visual clarity is great. ipod interface is great. ipod connection not so great... big step backwards if you ask me.

Its a great deck, the only little thing that bothers me is that you cannot actually go through songs on your ipod when hooked up to the usb port but you can do anything else on your ipod while hooked up. Other than that little thing I love it and it is totally worth the price!

    A bit disappointed

Written By RogerB, Boise,ID on Sunday, July 17, 2011

I was a little disappointed with the installation kit. It was a 90% solution. It had a wiring harness, but no connectors to physically connect the wires, and second, the installation was totally inadequate for a jeep... an off road vehicle. The receiver was slightly longer then the OEM receiver, so it didn't fit to the rear support bracket. The 'kit' just had the receiver dangling from the front plastic bezel. Any amount of bouncing would break or damage the receiver because there was no rear support.

my solution was soft form rubber wedged under and on top of the receiver and against the plastic shell of the dashboard. Simple, but I expected a better solution from Crutchfield's. This is why I choose Crutchfields... help with the installation.

    good quality, too confusing

Written By Tommy, Outer Banks, NC on Thursday, July 14, 2011

it has good sound quality but there is waaaaaay too many bells and whistle that you dont need, like the zap feature, the senseme, and other stuff. Also the thing about having to take off the face is sooooooooooo annoying its so confusing. Maybe i will get the hang of it eventually but its so hard to put on and its confusing. When i first installed it, it sounded great but i had no bass at all in my front speakers. I took it out and found that everything is connected like its supposed to and then when i turned it back on, the turn knob wouldnt work, i couldnt adjust anything including the volume and then i turned it off and unplugged it again and put it in and now it wont even turn on. Why cant they just make a stereo with simple things just liek the factory stereos but just have better quality and usb input. I'll prob write another review after i get the hang of everything.

Bought this stereo to replace my factory radio. I decided on this model because of the features it offered and the ability to expand to HD and Satellite radio if I choose, even add 2 amps AND has a Subwoofer output too!! . GREAT SOUND!....plenty of power in a single-cab truck....even with the factory speakers. Love the illumination options, USB and AUX inputs in the front and wireless remote. Very easy to use and adjust....I would highly recommend this to people on a budget! Big bangs for the buck.

I found this to be a great buy. I got it cause my factory receiver broke and I wanted a receiver to match the factory light color of the dash and control counsel. Personally,
best part about it is that I get to use my USB to play all of my own music rather than
being forced to listen to the radio everyday. Now you could get a much cheaper receiver with USB, but if you want to match interior light colors than I would
    recommend this one.

wires) and the sound is great. I love the color of the display in that I can
have a white display during the day and the dark blue when the headlights come
on. I have not played with all the functions yet, but out of the box it is a
    very good unit.

This model worked very well in my 1994 Mazda B2300. Installation was a breeze
(other than getting the incorrect speaker harness). I especially like the AUX
input, as my MP3 player is not an Ipod. Not many models have the RDS function.
This is a good value for the money, as it does everything I want. The only
downside I have found is the "Caution Alarm". The system beeps when turning the
truck off if the face plate is not removed.

I have had the unit installed for about two weeks now. So far the unit is
great. It has a myriad of functions and options you generally won't find at
this price level. Alot of which I have not been able to use yet. The ability
to go digital with this unit makes it an excellent upgrade from almost any stock
unit. The internal equalizer is another great feature. It also has a setting
that uses the low pass filter to allow the rear speaker to act as a "subwoofer"
    if one is not installed.

With respect to the reviewer here that cannot "dim" the display, just simply
choose a darker display color (such as the standard Red)..That color is NOT too
    bright at all.

With respect to the reviewer here complaining about the alarm tone, all of that is
programmable (or how you wire it).. I have been using the unit daily for 2 months
now...never heard any alarm on shut off!

What I DO find sad (about just about every tuner in the "modern" Sony line), is
that they chose to use a "cheaper" FM tuner, that only has about 10dBf
sensitivity (i.e. poor FM reception) whereas their tuners from say the 1990s had
8dBf sensitivity (i.e. EXCELLENT FM reception)...and this shows up constantly.

For example, on my old set, I could pick up a great radio station 80 miles
away.... NO, on this unit....all I get is hiss when trying to get
    that station...and even poor
reception here sometimes with LOCAL stations in this "city" of 6 million people.

It was explained to me that "nobody listens to FM anymore, (usually just using
the CD player, etc.) and that Sony decided
to not spend the extra money on a great tuner"...I would have gladly paid the
extra cost for that better radio. ;)

    poor ipod controls

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit does a lot of things right. It has a great equalizer, three sets of pre amp
outputs, and can be set to display any color. Unfortunately, it's horrible at controlling an
IPOD. I connected both an IPOD Nano and a 5th Gen Video. The unit wouldn't shuffle or
repeat either one. After speaking to three different people at Sony, I was told that it isn't
supposed to do these things, though it's in the instruction manual. If you don't care
about decent IPOD controls, then it's a good unit. Unfortunately one of the main reasons
I wanted it, was for IPOD controls. I returned the unit and went with an Alpine.

Very pleased with this product. Everything from the quality of workmanship to the
asthetics are top notch in my opinion. Works as advertised.
Made my speakers come alive. The usb input allowed me to plug in a flash drive with
mp3's and I was off listening to hours of music. Has many other options I have not
explored yet. Hope to get around to those soon

Installation was a matter of matching wires to the GMRC-01 harness required for my
vehicle and soldering (although other methods such as crimping could be used) them

If you are not using an external amp for your speakers be aware that an alarm
will go off warning you to detach the faceplate once the vehicle is turned off. There is
no way to disable this as far as I'm aware of. No deal breaker for me though.

All in all very happy and would highly recomend.

This radio is excellent. I bought it for my girlfriend because it can switch
through thousands of colors (all of which look great). Just the look of it is
what she loves the most but it's also a great radio. Crutchfield made it very
easy to install and it sounds great. Will play all matter of CD's as well as
easy hookup to MP3 players and storage devices for even more music. The two
things I found most annoying are that the faceplate is a major pain to get on
and off. I can usually get it in two or three tries but sometimes it can take 5
minutes just to get the darn thing on there right. The other slightly annoying
thing is that it plays an 'alarm' tone every time you turn the car off because
you can't remove the faceplate until after the alarm stops or you'll damage the
internal amplifier (or so it says). Overall great radio and would recommend to

    Good receiver with multi color

Written By rkung, East coast, Va on Wednesday, December 15, 2010

Very good receiver once you get the EQ settings just right, LOUDNESS seems to make distorted sound, so i leave it off. Preset colors are awesome, they blend into other colors when you use presets such as Forest, Ocean, Rainbow. The front face plate is one of the best looking I've seen, turned off or on. There is a USB slide cover. It reads MP3 tags, albums, song titles..but if there is no data for the mp3, you'll see only track number or blank lines...I wish it could also read filenames when that happens, so that's why I knocked down one star.

The remote is OK, better lookin that JVC, but I do not like the skinny "navigation" buttons, sometimes doesn't register.

Includes software to organize your songs into SenseMe group so colors will match the song mood/type. I do not use this. Can set a daytime color and nighttime color on faceplate.

For the price I think it should also include built-in HD radio. Most of the features are also found on cheaper Sony receivers. I think the price is for the multi color feature. You pay for the colors.

Overall good stereo. It looks great and being able to change the color of the
display is sweet. The customization of the sound is pretty good. The only
problem with this receiver is that the USB doesn't support anything else than
Sony mp3 players and Ipod/Iphone. If got something else and you don't mind using
the AUX input then you're good, but I also like to charge my phone, so having
two wires dangling around is annoying. So I exchanged it for a JVC Arsenal unit

You can also adjust the slope (1/2/3) of the high-pass crossover. You can adjust the subwoofer preamp output's volume level independently from the head unit's volume control from -10 to +10 in 1dB increments. In addition, you can select the phase of the subwoofer output from Normal or Reverse.

High-Pass Filter: The front and rear speaker outputs offer a selectable high-pass crossover frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off. You can also adjust the slope (1/2/3) of the high-pass crossover.

    • Listening Position: This unit can change the localization of sound by delaying the sound output from each speaker to suit your position, and simulate a natural sound field with the feeling of being in the center of it wherever you sit in the car. You can choose from Front Right, Front Left, Front Center, or Off. You can also set the subwoofer distance of the subwoofer to Near, Normal, or Far. In addition, you can fine-tune the listening position setting by +/-3.
    • RBE (Rear Bass Enhancer): RBE enhances the bass sound by applying the low-pass filter setting to the rear speakers. This function allows the rear speakers to work as a subwoofer even if there is no subwoofer connected.
    • Dynamic Loudness: Dynamic Loudness refers to compensating for volume level and signal gain.
    • DM+ Advanced: DM+ Advanced improves digitally compressed sound by restoring high frequencies lost in the compression process (works only for USB).
