About the Sony CDX-GT700HD

Ken Nail
The Sony CDX-GT700HD CD receiver combines the ability to play all your favorite media with a built-in HD Radio™ tuner that'll take you to the cutting edge of radio. Plus, you can connect and control your iPod® without having to buy an optional adapter, and you'll even find convenient front panel USB and auxiliary inputs for your portables.

Built-in HD Radio tuner
Tune to an FM or AM station that's broadcasting digital HD Radio signals and you'll enjoy better sound than you've ever experienced on the airwaves, all without static or distortion. You'll also enjoy extra features like additional programming broadcast on secondary or tertiary channels — choices that aren't available to regular radio listeners.

Once you connect your iPod to the CDX-GT700HD, you'll appreciate the convenience of iTunes® tagging. When you hear a song you like on HD Radio, just press a button on the receiver to "tag" it. Song information is saved to your iPod — simply connect your iPod to your computer and go to the Apple iTunes store to buy the song whenever you want.

Find your music files quickly
The CDX-GT700HD boasts an impressive set of controls for navigating through your iPod's music or any MP3, WMA, and AAC files you've burned to disc. Sony's Quick-BrowZer feature lets you search for songs by genre, artist, or album — you just rotate the knob to find the song you want, then push in on the knob to select. The Jump control leaps through your playlist in 10% increments, great if you're dealing with a bunch of files. Switch to passenger control and your passengers can select tunes with the iPod's controls while you concentrate on your driving.

Shape the sound
Sony's DM+ Advanced circuitry restores the details lost when music files are compressed, so you enjoy the best possible sound from your files. The EQ3 Stage 2 equalizer includes eight preset tone curves and a 3-band equalizer for adjusting the lows, mids, and highs. The Dynamic Soundstage Organizer adds presence and life to your music by raising the soundstage up to ear level — the three levels of adjustment let you pick the setting that works best for your car.

Ready for system building
You'll find three sets of preamp outputs for adding external amplifiers or a powered subwoofer. Built-in high- and low-pass filters ensure you send your speakers only the frequencies they're best equipped to handle.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Sony stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the receiver, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

    Display Features

Flip-Down/Detachable Face: The CDX-GT700HD features a manual fold-down face which provides a larger display and greater protection for the player's CD-slot and your CD discs. In addition, the unit features a detachable face for theft prevention. Two face-fixing screws are supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.  No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit.

Caution Alarm: If you turn the ignition switch to the Off position without detaching the front-panel, the caution alarm will sound for a few seconds. The alarm will only sound if the built-in amplifier is used.

2-Line LCD Display: The 2-line, black background and white backlit LCD display makes it easy to read song and station information.

Motion Display: This feature shows moving patterns and a spectrum analyzer on the display when turned on.

Auto Scroll: This feature allows long displayed items to scroll automatically across the display when the track is changed on a disc.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: Pressing the Off button once will turn off audio output, but the clock display and button illumination remain on. This makes the clock display and face/button illumination "Keyed" instead of "Unit On" only. To turn the unit off completely, you must press the Off button for two seconds.

Dimmer: To change the brightness of the display you can set the CDX-GT700HD to one of three dimmer modes - Dimmer Auto (dims the display automatically when you turn your vehicle's lights on), Dimmer Off (deactivates the dimmer), and Dimmer On (display always dim). The wiring harness includes an orange/white lead that should be connected to the vehicle's parking light circuit in order for the dimmer feature to operate.

Contrast: You can adjust the contrast level of the head unit's display for better day- and night-time viewing. The contrast level is adjustable in 7 steps.

Auto Off: When installing in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you can set the unit to turn off all lighting a set amount of time after you turn the power off. The Auto Off feature can be set to 30 seconds, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, or No.

Button Illumination: Illuminated keys help you find and select control functions in low light. You can change the heaudnit's button illumination to blue or green to better match your vehicle's interior dash lighting.

    HD Radio

Built-in HD Radio Tuner: The integrated HD Radio tuner receives compatible AM and FM radio stations signals in digital format for improved sound quality while providing metadata information and iTunes Music Tagging so that you can find the songs you like later.

HD Radio Technology: HD Radio technology, where available, offers higher quality sound than conventional analog broadcasts and receives text data. HD Radio provides FM broadcasts that are equal to CD sound quality and AM broadcasts that are as good as analog FM stereo broadcasts.  Right now there are about 2,000 radio stations broadcasting using digital HD Radio technology in the U.S. To find HD Radio stations in your area, visit the HD Radio website (HDRadio.com).

Metadata Information: HD Radio provides a variety of data; including station name, song title, artist name, album name, etc.

Multicasting: In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting it is possible to choose from up to 8 multicast programs (HD1 to HD8 and analog). There are also data programs for each program.

Analog Broadcasts: In addition to HD AM/FM stations, the CDX-GT700HD can also receive conventional analog AM/FM broadcasts.

Preset Tuning: The radio features 6 memory bands to store and receive analog and digital AM/FM stations. You can store up to 6 presets each in FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1 and AM2 (total: 18 FM/12 AM). Preset tuning can be done manually or automatically.

    • Best Tuning Memory (BTM): This feature selects stations with the best signals within the selected band and stores them in order of their frequency. You can select from FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1, and AM2.
    • Manual Tuning: You can manually tune and find your favorite radio stations one by one for FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1, and AM2.

iTunes Tagging: The iTunes Tag button on this unit allows you to tag songs (up to 50) you like that are broadcast by HD Radio stations. Information about these tagged songs is stored by the receiver and transferred to your connected iPod. When you connect your iPod to your computer, iTunes automatically presents songs in a new "Tagged" playlist so you can preview, purchase, and download them.  This function can be operated with the following iPod/iPhone models - iPod nano (3rd/4th/5th/6th gen), iPod classic, iPod touch, and iPhone (2G/3G/3GS/4/4S/5).

Satellite Radio Ready: There are several options for connecting an optional  satellite radio receiver to this head unit:

    • SIRIUS Satellite Radio: To receive SIRIUS Satellite Radio, you can connect the optional SCC1 SiriusConnect Vehicle Tuner and the optional SNYSC1 Sony interface module (package item number 700SIRSONY, sold separately).
    • XM Satellite: To receive XM Satellite Radio connect the optional CNP2000UCA XM Tuner and the Sony CNP-SON1 adapter cable (package item number 700XMSON2, sold separately).

Note: A subscription is also required to receive satellite radio programming from SIRIUS or XM.

Jump Mode: Jump Mode gets you closer to the song you want by allowing you to fast forward through a music category in 10 percent increments.

Zappin: With the Zappin feature, you can play music (files or folders) in 6, 9, or 30-second clips until you find the song you are looking for on your CD or connected USB device.

Off Eject: The CD disc can be ejected with the power off. The CD player will automatically reinsert the disc if it's ejected but not removed for 20 seconds or more.

Mounting Angle: For proper CD playback, this unit must be mounted between 0 (horizontal) and 45 degrees.

    Aux/USB/iPod Connectivity

Front Panel Auxiliary Input: A front panel stereo 3.5mm mini-jack is provided to allow the connection of a portable audio source. Just connect your portable digital music player to this unit, and you can listen to the audio from the portable player through the speakers in your mobile audio system. The volume level of the auxiliary input is adjustable from -8 to +18 dB to compensate for any difference between the unit and your portable device. The aux input can be deactivated in the menu so it does not appear as an available source.

The head unit can play music files stored on the USB device in MP3, WMA, or AAC formats (up to 320 kbps). When playing a USB device, the display can indicate track/album/artist/genre number, track/artist/album/genre name, elapsed playing time, text information, or clock. The head unit can recognize up to 128 folders with 500 tracks each when connected to a USB Mass Storage Device. A sliding cover protects the USB input when it is not in use.

Note: This unit cannot recognize USB devices via a USB hub.

USB 1-Wire iPod Control: USB 1-Wire for iPod lets you directly connect, charge, and control select iPods via the USB jack on the front of the unit, as well as view metadata like song title and artist on the front display. The GT700HD has a front panel USB port which allows you to connect your iPod via a single cable (iPod dock connector-to-USB--cable, not included with the head unit). Audio Section

True Fidelity Sound Construction: The Sony Xplod CDX-GT700HD FM/AM compact disc player features a newly developed sound processor for less distortion, an S-MOSFET IC for smooth signal transmission, and a large-sized capacitor for deep bass sound.

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Sony CDX-GT700HD utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

CEA2006 Compliant Amplifier: The power specifications for the Sony Xplod CDX-GT700HD are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the CDX-GT700HD are as follows:

    • Continuous Power Output: 17 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Peak Power Output: 52 watts x 4-channels (208 total watts)

EQ3 Stage 2: The Sony Xplod CDX-GT700HD features an EQ3 Stage 2 equalizer with 7 preset equalizer curves for various types of music. You can choose from Xplod, Vocal, Edge, Cruise, Space, Gravity, Custom, or Off. The Off mode provides a flat response. The Custom mode allows you to manually adjust the Low (60 Hz), Mid (1 kHz), and High (10 kHz) frequencies from +/-10dB.

Digital Music Plus Advanced: The Sony CDX-GT700HD features Digital Music Plus Advanced which is an enhancer technology used to reproduce detail and high frequency sound from compressed audio.

Dynamic Soundstage Organizer (DSO): Sony's Dynamic Soundstage Organizer uses proprietary circuitry to induce subtle phase shifts, simulating a sound source that is placed higher than the actual speakers in the vehicle. For example, when the DSO function is used in a vehicle equipped with speakers mounted low in the front doors, it creates virtual speakers in the dash to raise the soundstage. This unit offers three levels of DSO, each with a larger and higher soundstage. You can store the DSO setting for each source.

Loudness: This feature reinforces bass and treble for clear sound at low volume levels.

Three Pairs Of 2V Preamp Outputs: The CDX-GT700HD contains three pairs of 2-volt RCA preamp outputs - front and rear pairs plus another pair on a 10" pigtail for subwoofer operation. The subwoofer output is non-fading with a low pass filter and a selectable cut-off frequency of 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, 140Hz, 160Hz, or Off. You can adjust the subwoofer preamp output's volume level independently from the head unit's volume control from -10 to +10 in 1dB increments. In addition, you can select the phase of the subwoofer output from Normal or Reverse.

High-Pass Filter: The front and rear speaker outputs offer a selectable high-pass crossover frequency of 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, 140Hz, 160Hz, or Off.

Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The head unit comes supplied with an IR wireless remote control (RM-X151) for easy operation. The included wireless remote allows you to control the basic functions of the Sony Xplod head unit while keeping your eyes on the road.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.
