Overview

Our take on the Sony CDX-GT710HD

Well, maybe not everything about radio. You'd like it if your favorite FM stations had stronger lows, better highs, and more detail, and you get tired of the tinny sound of AM. And for that matter, having a little more choice in programming would be cool, too.

You love radio

Well, maybe not everything about radio. You'd like it if your favorite FM stations had stronger lows, better highs, and more detail, and you get tired of the tinny sound of AM. And for that matter, having a little more choice in programming would be cool, too.

HD Radio

HD Radio™ to the rescue

Help is at hand with Sony's CDX-GT710HD CD receiver, which comes equipped with a built-in HD Radio tuner. This technology allows participating radio stations to broadcast a digital signal with superior sonic characteristics and more features to compatible radios. You won't pay anything extra for the broadcasts, and you don't have to learn any new tricks. Just turn on the radio and tune it in. If your favorite station broadcasts an HD Radio signal, you'll enjoy FM that's like listening to a CD, and AM sound quality that rivals your old FM station. And many HD Radio stations support multi-casting — letting you tune in secondary or tertiary channels on the same frequency. So if you're tired of music, you can tune in the news (or vice versa).

Sony CDX-GT710HD

You can customize this receiver's display and button colors to match your car or taste.

CD playback, USB, and Pandora®

You can play all your favorite CDs, of course, and the front-panel USB input accepts most iPod® and iPhone® models. Plug in your player and you'll be able to control your favorite playlists right from the receiver. And if you've discovered the joys of streaming music, you can control Pandora® Internet radio stations from the receiver when your iPhone is connected.

Serious audio and visual options

Sophisticated sound controls, including a 7-band equalizer and a suite of Sony sound-enhancing tools, will blow away those bass and treble controls on your old radio. You can adjust the color of this Sony's display and controls to match your car's interior, or even have the lights of the receiver pulse with the sound of the music when you're ready to kick off a mobile rave.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

Good value for the price. Was mainly looking for a unit with a HD tuner which works great. Plenty of equalizer settings to tune it to your liking. Easy install.

This radio is great. You get more bang for your buck with this radio. HD Reciever and I purchased the SiriusXM Tuner and just connected it to the back of the receiver and I got rid of the SiriusXM Receiver on top of my Dashboard. Only bad thing is I miss all the info that came across my old receiver ( Title of Song, Phone Numbers.....Etc.Etc.) Over All a Great Radio. Oh and by the way, I have the colors of the background sync'd with the music so it changes colors along with the beat of the music.

Pros: SiriusXM Ready, HD Radio, CD Player and better sound quality than my factory installed radio. Easy to install

Cons: I have nothing to add to this

For the price I'm blown is with the quality of this unit. I purchased a sirius tuner and the two make a great combo. The display looks really cool and allows you to switch between different colors. I'm blown away by how good the sound is too.

Pros: ease of use, sound, visual appeal and sirius compatible.

Cons: no bluetooth, which isn't a big deal

This is the first car radio that I have installed in 20+ years and it replaced a twenty year old factory am/fm ford radio. With the free included wiring harness and the Din install kit from Crutchfield it was a SNAP to install. I also bought new sony Xplod speakers too. Unit is fairly simple to set up but don't toss your owners manual unless you are a pro.

Pros: Great unit for a casual user that don't want to break the bank to have a better radio than stock low end one.

Cons: not really any for me ... But don't expect to get a thousand dollar sound out of a $100.00 some unit either.

This unit exibits very poor sound quality in temps below 32 degrees. I installed it in June, 2014 but began having problems in the Fall / Winter. Specifically, until the unit warms up (via ambient air) there is ZERO bass resonse and very tinny highs / mid-range. This units is pushing infinity 6 x 9" and 5 1/4" and two JL 10" subs run through two Rockford Fosgate Amps (5 - Channel set for 4 Channel operation and a 300 w mono). I re-iterate: This unit is unreliable at cold temperature. No more Sony for me, thanks!

Pros: Awesome versatility via sound menus

    Cons: Worthless in cold weather

There seems to be only two choices for the display brightness setting; dim and dimmer. The text on the display is completely unreadable in sunlight, no matter which display color is selected. A Sirius XM logo, along with the word 'ready', is printed right in the middle of the face plate. Please be aware that this particular use of the word 'ready' means 'hardware sold separately' and 'installation required'.

Pros: The front USB input is a fantastic feature. I have yet to use the cd player, and don't foresee the need.

Cons: The display is unreadable in sunlight.

This Sony receiver/cd HD tuner is fantastic, the sound quality and power are impressive, the install was about what I expected thanks to the free install kit. This receiver pushes my Rockford Fosgates nicely, Thought I would need a subwoofer but I am impressed with the bass without one, probably get one any way just for the extra punch. Has every feature I wanted and more. Can't be beat for the price.

Pros: The HD radio lets me hear all kind of stations (that I did not know were there). The display and sound are so fine tunable you cantweek it just how you want.

    Cons: none

    Great bang for the buck.

Tons better than the cassette deck/AM/FM with "graphic equalizer" that was in the 87 S10 Tahoe Blazer I inherited from my Mom. I tried to save the thing (I'm cheap at heart) with new speakers, but it just couldn't cut it. In typical Crutchfield fashion after a little soldering, shrink tubing and adaptor mount clipping it went right in and sounded great! In the old "SUV's" like mine it sticks out a little but the adaptor makes it look good. It only took about 2 hours total to put it in, way better than having some kid at the [offsiteUrl]. do it.

    Pros: HD FM!

Cons: Could be a little simpler for the initial set up.

I was very happy with the Sony receiver, the instructions supplied were excellent, this was a tremendous upgrade over my old factory setup. I would definitely recommend Crutchfield to anyone wishing to replace their car stereo.

Pros: The Sony unit has many features, preset / customizable EQ, very adequate volume for top down driving, neat features like customizable display, aux input and HD reception. Excellent radio for the money.

Cons: The only con is the controls are very small, have multiple functions, and are a bit complicated - I need to refer to the manual a lot, But for 90% of my listening, it's quite to use by using only a few of the many functions available. Don't be put off by this. As a replacement for my aging factory receiver, this was a no-brainer.

Installed for about a week now and works great. The HD makes a difference when listening to talk radio. The highs are really clear and resonant voices don't drown out whole conversations. I'm still figuring out some of the settings. UI is not as intuitive as I'd have thought from Sony. Guess I shouldn't have thrown out the directions....

I've had this for at least six months now and generally it's very pleasant to live with. The FM reception is a startling leap forward over the ancient radio it replaced. I generally like the menus and adjustments of the thing, but I'm not happy that the crossovers are adjustable in 20 Hz steps--I think a finer control really would have made dialing in my sub easier. Or maybe I'm just picky. Not really sure it sounds as good as the Alpine in my other car, but there's only a small difference if there even is one. Overall, I'm quite happy with it.

Pros: Nice display colors, great FM reception, good sound, mostly easy to use.

Cons: Crossovers need finer adjustment, oddly-angled buttons that change the track on CDs are not as easy to use as flat buttons would be. Menus sometimes take a little effort to get off the screen, depending on what you were adjusting.

I returned this radio due to the volume control would stick when I got it really loud and not go down. I feel it is to complicated to make sound adjustments on the fly while driving. I replaced it with a Alpine. Very happy with it. So much easier to navigate.

Cons: Complicated to navigate sound settings.

I bought the radio and the wiring harness. It came with a mounting bracket, emailed instructions and antenna adapter, all of which made putting this radio in a breeze. I was concerned that the buttons would be too small but they have a good "feel" to them and does not now seem to be an issue. Most of the setup was intuitive and I was able to do without looking at the manual, which BTW covers the operation and setup very well. The sound is very good on the factory speakers and I am sure will even better with better speakers. The different colors that you can set up in it allows you to personalize it and looks cool. the size of the letters is big enough to see at a glance. I want to thank Kyle on the other end of the phone for his help. Crutchfield live up to its rep. Also the FM reception on this radio is better than the factory one, and it was not too bad. the USB port door is a door, not a flap as I have seen on other radios. It flips to the side and into the face, very little to no chance that it could get broke off.

Pros: Good reception, most controls easy to find by feel and then use

Cons: the mounting bracket does not have a little pocket to put your I-pod or phone

I have always trusted sony head units. I have had two consecutive don't heads installed in E36 BMW's and could not be happier with the results. Works very well with factory stereo system in car and makes it really come alive if upgrading from stock. Only reason for 4 star coolness factor is that it's not a double DIN nor does it have the cool iPod tray on the inside of it like my other Sony Headunit.

    Pros: Boatload of features

My Honda factory radio died about a year and a half ago, so I finally decided to install an aftermarket unit. Purchased this unit for the features ( HD radio and iPod). Installation was pretty much as described. Wasn't sure about disassembling the dash, but no worries. Everything went back the way it came apart and voila! Excellent sound, easy to use.

Wanted to replace the double-DIN factory stereo in my wife's 2000 Subaru Legacy and had looked everywhere for a suitable unit. When I found this at Crutchfield, I ordered it immediately. The included instructions and dash kit made installation a breeze - finished it all in about 2 hours. Excellent sound. loaded with features like Pandora, USB, AUX, and Sirius/XM ready, and remote control - this unit is a great value!

Pros: Good power output, clean sound, ability to fine-tune the sound, and easy to install.

Cons: The menu settings are a little tricky to get used to but the manual explains the process very well. Buttons are a bit small for my fingers.

It was long overdue replacing my OEM radio/CD player/cassette player in my Grand Cherokee Ltd. It was dying of old age. Choosing a replacement was making me nuts,so I went with this Sony. I wasn't disappointed Great sound quality and a variety of features that exceeded my expectations. Especially for the price. No more screwing around with adapters to use my iPod.

Pros: iPod and Satellite radio ready. Looks as great as it sounds. Immediately bought new rear speakers to match the sound quality.

Cons: A bit lengthy for me on installation, and that's about it, except for learning how to program the thing.

This is my first after market car steor that I've installed in years so I don't have much of a reference. However, compared to my factory box it is awesome.

Pros: The Satelite radio sound is close to CD quality. The CD sound is very clear. Even the radio sound is better than factory. There are tons of great features. Having integrated satelite radio; tuner, cd,and other sources is a big plus. Installation was a wiz with the parts and instructions provided by Crutchfield. Integration (extra cost) with steering wheel controls works well. Having 3 sets of 6 push buttons for EACH source input is handy..

Cons: Using the setup controls is a bit confusing; Does not resort to showing time if display is set to show song name or artist.

All the parts and pieces I needed were included in the package. The Crutchfield people are on their game. As to the radio, it has all the features I wanted. Aux line in for my MP-3 player and even a USB where I can use a thumb drive filled with my music. Problem is, many functions you might use regularly are deep in many menus making in complex to make changes while driving. It IS a car stereo after all. Where else would you make changes to the stereo? The other issue is once you get to the item you want to use, you have to back out of that menu through as many as it took to get there. It would be nice to have some sort of "home" function to get back to the volume settings. Complexity is becoming an issue to many products these days. It's nice that there are so many things you can change. But, if all you want to do is make some simple change in settings, you need to scroll through too many menus to get there.

Pros: Powerful sounds, the ability to plug in several different devices to listen to through the stereo. Some might love the ability to change colors of the display. I think I'd rather they either cut the cost by eliminating that feature or add something a bit more useful for your listening tastes.

Cons: Complex menus that are not easy to back out of. That makes it a but unsafe to use while driving.

After an easy install, especially with the instructions sent from Crutchfield, and taking some time to learn the buttons and menus of a new receiver (especially one with even more functionality than what I had) I am thoroughly enjoying this Sony. You can make it sound however you want and customize the heck out of colors and brightness on the display and buttons. I still tend to fat finger the buttons every once in awhile but I get over that easy. The volume wheel is great and just sensitive enough but not too sensitive.

Pros: Lots of customizing options to personalize it, tons of sound adjustments to make it exactly how you want it, large volume wheel that is not too sensitive, HD radio sounds awesome when I'm in an area that gets it and this receiver has pretty much every option except Bluetooth (although a model with Bluetooth is available)

Cons: Some buttons are a bit small and vulnerable to fat finger, does not come with a storage case for the face if you prefer removing that when you park. Source list keeps everything in it even if it is not in use so if your not using USB, Pandora, or Aux it still scrolls through it on your way to what you want (not a big deal but a con never the less)

The unit was a perfect fit, looks good, sounds good and was super easy to install. I am NOT a techy person so menus, buttons, dials.... Knowing when to push or turn doesn't come easy. However, a few minutes each evening for three days got it all figured out. The manual to the Sony is easy to follow. The very best part of the experience was during the ordering process everything I needed to install the unit was either included or suggested. So I did need to figure anything out. The best best part was that I forgot to order the connectors for the wiring harness, I called from work the next day, the guy that answered the phone knew exactly who I was, added the connectors to my order... Everything arrived in the same box. Plus... He was super nice and very helpful! Now that's service!

This replaced an older(10yrs.) Sony -Xplode Cassette model. Guess I'm 'old' school, didn't have a CD changer hookup. This newer model doesn't seem to sound as good? Seems like more distortion. Different colors are cool. Buttons seem kind of flimsy, too small. HD radio is ok. For the price,it'll do.

This radio does come with free install gear for most vehicles. You can find out more about this here: http://www.crutchfield.com/popups/offerdetails.aspx?offerId=10008 [ Jeff  Jan 09, 2015 ]  Staff
Yes it does. It is a really good radio. We were very happy with it. [ Sandra  Jan 13, 2015 ]
    yes it does [ Annette  Jan 11, 2015 ]
Yes it does Jarred, If you still have the Owners manual that came with the Receiver? Go to page 5, Getting started...It will walk you through the procedure, If not? then here we go...The clock uses 12 hour digital indication, step 1, Press (Menu), rotate the control dial until "GENERAL" appears, then press it. step 2, Rotate the dial until "CLOCK ADJ" appears, then press it. The hour indication flashes. step 3, Rotate the control dial to set the hour and minute. to move the digital indication, Press (SEEK) +/- step 4, After setting the minute, press (MENU)....The set up is complete and the Clock starts. To display the clock, press (DSPL). I have to admit, it took me a few tries to get the sequence of button pushing down pat, but it is the same procedure for most of it's programming functions, except for the display aspect...your time will display when you turn the Key, until you set the function, be it Radio, CD, etc. then it goes away, that's where the (DSPL) come into play...Hope this has been of some Help to you, I carry my Owners Manual in the Glove Box because every now and then the old adage holds true...When in Doubt, Read the Instructions ;-) [ scott  Jan 10, 2015 ]
Yes, if you push the display button it will go through several options/ preferences for the screen display. [ EDWARD  Jan 09, 2015 ]

    I have a Samsung S4,its similiar to your S5,didn't try to use it,used my ipod Nano,works fine. [ Michael  Dec 22, 2014 ]
Sorry, don't know. It should,as we use it with a KitKat 4.1 Samsung phone. 1 yr. old. HTH. [ JEFFREY  Dec 22, 2014 ]
The only thing that should matter is the file type used (ie. mp3 or wpa) and this deck plays both of those types. Speed (24x, 48x, etc) really only effects the sound quality and file size. I haven't had any issue with playing 48x or 128x (which is the iTunes standard and is CD quality) on this deck so far but I did notice slightly worse sound with the 48x CD because the file is simply not as high of quality. If you want the best quality sound coming through your speakers that iTunes can give than go with maximum (128x) which is CD quality and enjoy! But if you want to be able to put more songs on the CD and don't mind losing some sound quality then go with the lower speeds and you should be good. Enjoy! [ JOHN C  Mar 24, 2014 ]
You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you. [ Jeff  Jan 27, 2014 ]  Staff
Not sure about the Gen 5's works with the Gen 4. Satisfied with the purchase easy to install and gave my 99 Cobras Mach factory system a little boost. Wife liked it so much were looking at the Sony WX-GT90BT for her. [ CHARLES L  Dec 31, 2013 ]
Don't know much about (Generation) I have a (nano) I bought from a local store and I connect it to new radio and it fits perfectly. [ Michael  Dec 30, 2013 ]
Sorry Rich, I don't have an Ipod. Contact Sony. [ JEFFREY  Dec 28, 2013 ]
I don't have a touch, but it works great with the iPhone 4, 5, and 5s and the original iPad, all of which I have had plugged into mine so I'd bet the iPod would work as well. The USB port even charges the device while you are listening to it. [ JOHN C  Dec 28, 2013 ]
Why not just call Crutchfield and ask? I'm not using an I-pod so I really don't know. [ John  Dec 28, 2013 ]
