Five sides equals big bass

The design of the Sony's GTR Series XS-GTR101L 10" 4-ohm subwoofer not only catches your eye, but it also helps give you better bass. The five-sided woofer cone reduces standing waves, which can diminish the bass output. The unique "dimple" design makes the cone more rigid so it'll hold its shape at high output levels, and it reduces the cone's weight so it's more responsive. You'll enjoy tight, accurate bass.

This XS-GTR101L handles up to 370 watts RMS, impressive for a sub in this price range. Even though the cone has five sides, this Sony still fits in a standard round opening in either a ported or sealed enclosure.

To drive this single subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 275 and 550 watts RMS at 4 ohms. For more information, please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.

What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

I've had two of the older red versions of this for about 8 years paired with a sony two channel 1200w amp, and it wasn't until recently that I realized just how capable these can be. I busted one because of junk rolling around in the back so I bridged the amp and hooked up just one. Only the one can still shake the car to the point where I need to back it off to hear anything else or see the mirrors, which made me realize that two is overkill.

The sound quality is average, but for the price and considering how much power they can really handle these subs are amazing. Once I had it dialed in, I was amazed that just one could create the same sound that I had the two pushing out for 8 years (and by that I mean STUPID OBNOXIOUSLY LOUD lol). I planned on blowing the second one and replacing it, but at this rate I don't think even 500 rms will do the trick...

Well done, Sony. Thanks for the hearing damage.

Pros: 8 years of abuse = excellent build quality Will handle more power than I can put up with Best bang for the buck

Cons: Average sound quality

P5 Cone Design: The five-sided polypropylene cone uses a unique dimpled design; this stiffens the cone, resulting in lower distortion.

Surround: To improve cone motion control, the surround is made of ThermoPlastic Olefin (TPO), a combination of rubber, polypropylene, polyethylene, and a reinforcing filler.

Binding Posts: The binding post wire terminals will accept pin connectors, spade lugs, single banana plugs, and bare wire up to 8 gauge. The binding posts are spaced too far apart to accept dual banana plugs.

Enclosure Compatibility: This woofer can provide extended bass in sealed and ported enclosures:

  • Recommended Sealed Enclosure Volume: 0.84 ft³
  • Recommended Ported Enclosure Volume: 1.37 ft³ using one 4" diameter x 9-7/8" long port
