Sony Xplod GTX speakers give new meaning to "full-range." Strong, lightweight woofers combine with a variety of midrange drivers and tweeters to attain a perfect balance between raw power capability and accurate reproduction. You'll hear the entire sonic spectrum of your music with no gaps or dips in response.

Sony makes GTX woofer cones out of a proprietary material that's lighter and stronger than polypropylene, for better energy efficiency and power handling. These cones recover very quickly between musical peaks, for increased clarity in the vocal range. Synthetic rubber speaker surrounds resist stretching and maintain their elasticity for long life under heavy usage.

The XS-GTX1640 6-1/2" 4-way speakers take care of the musical details with balanced diaphragm midrange drivers and piezoelectric dome tweeters. Sony blends these complementary elements together to produce well-balanced sound, from the lowest notes on an electric bass to the strum of an acoustic guitar. High-frequency response extends beyond the normal limits of human hearing, producing the overtones that make the instruments sound more natural.

Product Highlights:

  • 6-1/2"/6-3/4" 4-way car speakers (pair)

These speakers have a lot of thump to them unless you're looking for horrible muddled bass rumbling every body panel of your car. I put these up front in my 1990 Bronco and put the XS GTX6930's in the back and the front speakers alone made my door panels rattle and required a little soundproofing to deaden this issue. Even the knobs on the window cranks were sounding like maracas the bass was shaking them so much!

Long story short, these are GREAT speakers that produce really even levels that produce amazing clear sound with excellent mid-range. And DON'T BE FOOLED, with minimal adjustments to your receiver's EQ, you can have solid bass come out of these guys. Again, not if you're only wanting to have stupid levels of bass being forced out to try and impress people at stop lights, but a great high quality level of bass that actually makes your music sound great and has some good punch to them if you want it.

Great Speaker

Number one, these speakers are LOUD. I had to turn down the gain on my speaker amp (from maximum haha) because of the sheer amount of noise coming out of these. And the clarity of the noise will blow your mind, you will hear sounds you never thought was in your music thanks to the 4-way design. Ive only heard better sound coming out of speakers 5 times the price. I have these set up with an 80Hz HPF and these babies dont put out an ounce of bass, leaving all the low sound to my Sony XPLOD 1200W subwoofer (also a great buy). The bass is practically shaking my little car apart yet I can hear every piano note and guitar wail no matter how small.

If you are audiophile on a budget these are the speakers to get. Grab em while they are hot.

Only thing keeping these things from a 5 star rating how bad the mounting hardware it came with was, and the cheap plastic covers.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought these to replace factory speakers in my 2008 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab. Being these are 4-way speakers, they don't produce a deep bass sound, but that's what they make sub-woofers for. The bass is clean and clear with no distortion. These speakers definitely handle the mids and highs with clean, crisp sound. Great choice for speaker replacement.

Great Speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are great and produce amazing sound. One thing which I will mention is that since they are 4 ways, you get a lot less bass than you might desire. If you are running a box or a bass tube - or even with some decent 2 ways in the rear this is a great speaker. Not good for all around sound, but definately effective at balancing out and letting you hear all the mids and highs in striking clarity.

Best Speakers Out There!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As with most 3-way /
4-way speakers,
these seem to
produce a very nice
range on the high
end, but not so well
on the low end. I
used these in my
front doors to
provide a nice
balance with the
base in the rear
deck. I could not
recommend these all
around as you would
seem to loose the
base compared to
stock 2-way
speakers. These do
make a nice accent
though to bring out
those highs (piano,
guitar, ect). Sound
was very clear; even
at high volumes
there was little to
no distortion.
Because of there
response range, I
could hear some
feedback (light
hiss) but this was
taken care of by my
stock covers. I used
these with my stock
Saturn 2002 SC2 head
unit. No issues
mounting, and crutch
field provided the
wire adapters (nice)
so it was a

Product Research

H.O.P. Woofers: The woofers are made of Highly Oriented Polyolefine (H.O.P.). Using high-tech fibers aligned under extreme pressure, Sony's exclusive H.O.P. is lighter & stronger than polypropylene. The result is greater linearity, smoother response, and better sound.

Stroke Stabilizer Surround: Sony developed the Stroke Stabilizer Surrond to take advantage of the quick transient response and low weight of a thin surround, along with the superior back-pressure resistance of a thick surround. Radial ridges of thicker material are added along the surround, with the inner side handling the detailed strokes, and the entire surround resisting the back-pressure during higher power passages. This balance results in a speaker with high power handling, accuracy throughout the power range, and low distortion.

Midranges: Each speaker has a 1-7/16" HDLD (High Density Layered Diaphragm) balanced diaphragm midrange for fast transients with lower distortion.

Tweeters: Each speaker uses a 7/16" dome tweeter and a 11/32" dome super tweeter for a wide soundstage.

Mounting: The speakers can be mounted in a 6-1/2" opening, or, using the four mounting tabs, the speakers can be mounted in a 6-3/4" opening.
