Our take on the Sony Xplōd™ XS-GTX1642

Sony's XS-GTX1642 6-3/4" speakers feature woofer cones made from Highly Oriented Polyolefine, a proprietary material that's lighter and stronger than polypropylene for better energy efficiency and power handling. These cones recover very quickly from one note to the next, increasing clarity in the vocal range. Sony's unique treated cloth surround is light and thin along the inner edge for quicker response, and thickly reinforced around the outer edge to keep the cone in place during heavy use, which means better power handling and increased accuracy.

Each 4-way speaker takes care of the rest of the musical details with a 1-7/16" midrange driver, dome tweeter, and dome supertweeter. Sony blends these complementary elements together to produce well-balanced sound, from the lowest bass note to the highest cymbal crash. High-frequency response extends beyond the normal limits of human hearing, producing the overtones that make the instruments sound more natural. Sony includes grilles for custom installations.

Features

Woofers: The woofers are made of Highly Oriented Polyolefine (H.O.P.) plus aramid fiber. Using high-tech fibers aligned under extreme pressure, Sony's exclusive H.O.P. is lighter & stronger than polypropylene. The result is greater linearity, smoother response, and better sound.

Stroke Stabilizer Surround: Sony developed the Stroke Stabilizer Surround to take advantage of the quick transient response and low weight of a thin surround, along with the superior back-pressure resistance of a thick surround. Radial ridges of thicker material are added along the surround, with the inner side handling the detailed strokes, and the entire surround resisting the back-pressure during higher power passages. This balance results in a speaker with high power handling, accuracy throughout the power range, and low distortion.

Midrange: Each speaker has a 1-7/16" PEI (Poly-Ether Imide) balanced dome midrange for fast transients with lower distortion.

Tweeters: Each speaker uses a 7/16" dome tweeter and a 11/32" dome super tweeter for a wide soundstage. Both the tweeter and super tweeter are made of PEI (Poly-Ether Imide).

Mounting: The speakers can be mounted in a variety of 6-1/2" and 6-3/4" openings.
