The Sony HDR-MV1 gathers high-quality stereo audio

The Sony HDR-MV1 gathers high-quality stereo audio.

Where's my audio?

Here's a compact, convenient video camera designed with musicians and stage performers in mind. The Sony HDR-MV1 is here to boost your chances of bringing home the best possible sound from your shoot. With tools like 120° X/Y twin-axis stereo microphones that capture a wide soundfield, to uncompressed linear PCM or Internet-ready AAC recording, the 'MV1 does far more than almost any camera in its class to up the audio side of your production equation. The camera also features an external 3.5mm microphone input so you can connect a variety of specialized professional microphones.

That's not to say they've ignored anything about the video capture. A 120° wide-angle Zeiss® Vario-Tessar® lens gets the entire scene into the frame. And the camera features smooth 1080/30p capture that saves to readily-available SD-family Micro memory cards or Sony Memory Stick™ Micro media.

Why one wide-angle?

So why does this camera feature a fixed wide-angle? Well, firstly, it's perfect just for setting up on stage or in your home studio and capturing the entire band — or getting up close to capture your and your instrument. But it's also optimized for people who like to shoot videos with multiple cameras. Think music video.

Much of today's video editing software uses the audio signal to accurately sync up shots so you can easily cut between cameras. In order to do that reliably you need a good, clear audio signal that's stronger than you might be able to get from a typical HD camcorder's on-board, mounted-on-the-top mic. And you need a wide field of view so you can, by comparing shots, make sure your close-up camera stays in good sync with your master audio. Sony's Audio Lip Sync functionality makes this simple, by ensuring accurate audio-to-video lock.

Control and view your HDR-MV1 camera remotely with the free Sony PlayMemories app (smartphone not included)

Control and view your HDR-MV1 camera remotely with the free Sony PlayMemories app (smartphone not included)

And with the built-in near-field communication (NFC) and the camera's own Wi-Fi® ad-hoc network, you can use Sony's free downloadable PlayMemories apps for iOS® and Android™ to remotely control, remotely view, and share files from your camera.

The multi-camera problem solver

In essence, the HDR-MV1 replaces two pieces of gear that are invaluable in every multi-camera video setup. a dedicated, high-quality audio recorder, and a wide-angle camera for a "master shot." Start your production and leave it running. It'll solve a lot of problems downstream before you're even aware they exist.

    Excellent Video and Audio Quality!

Written by: SL from California on August 2, 2015

This Sony camera is so easy to use and it connects to a smartphone for remote use! The video and audio is surprisingly excellent. I guess I just did not expect much. I've used it a number of times and found that the placement is critical otherwise the video will look odd. This is due to the fixed wide-angle lens. The camera menu is easy to navigate and setup on the fly once you get used to the symbols. I love the portability/size and the fact that I could attach it to a tripod that I use for my SLR camera. Wish it had an AC adapter but if you keep the battery charged and carry a external power source such as a "Jackery", you'll be okay. I did not use all of the features such as the external mic input, etc. I shot a video in low light and a local music spot for band's doing their thing at open mic night. Show's the camera capabilities in low light with only the stage lit. The camera was up on a tripod about 4-5 feet high. I recommend the camera for anyone needing really good audio/video quality at a reasonable price.

Pros: Great video and audio in a small package, easy to use, large screen for live feed display, remote use with smartphone-a big, big plus for me

Cons: Does not come with an AC adapter

Lens: The HDR-MV1 features a wide-angle Carl Zeiss Tessar lens with a fast F2.8 aperture for capturing high quality video with excellent resolution, contrast, and color reproduction. Image Sensor: The camcorder is equipped with a 1/2.3 (7.77mm) back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS image sensor with 16,800,000 gross pixels and 8,400,000 effective pixels. It also features the BIONZ image processor found in most Sony camcorders.

2.7" LCD: The unit has a side-mounted 2.7" Clear Photo LCD screen with 230,400 pixels. The LCD does not swivel out like other camcorders. You can automatically or manually monitor audio levels with the on-screen audio meters.

You can choose between two audio formats: Linear PCM for high resolution CD-quality sound (44.1 kHz, 16-bit) or AAC (48 kHz, 128 kbps) for files that can be shared on the Internet. The maximum continuous movie shooting time is about 13 hours. The MV1 can also record audio only in WAV format up to 2 GB per file (approx. 2 hours 50 minutes).

Media: Video recordings are recorded to microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC memory cards, as well as Memory Stick Micro (Mark2) media. The estimated shooting time for movies is as follows:

I do not know the answer to your question. I shot an approx. 20 minute video to Youtube and uploaded the entire thing with no editing. I can attest that the video and audio quality for a fixed lens is outstanding. The only drawback is the battery life is short. So you will need an extra battery. [ STAN A  Jul 21, 2015 ]
Yes. Sony has an app called PlayMemories that allows you to import and edit photos and videos. [ Eric  Jul 21, 2015 ]
A USB cable (Micro USB cable) is supplied. The HDR-MV1 is equipped with a USB port to charge the battery and to access content on a computer. With an optional AC adaptor, AC-UD10, you can operate and record video while the device is charging. The camcorder has a tripod receptacle. It records up to 3.5 hours when fully charged. [ Eric  Apr 14, 2015 ]
I was told that the battery that was included with the camera would record approximately 45 minutes. There were other batteries available at a separate cost that would record longer. [ Jennifer  Dec 31, 2013 ]
The battery will last 75 minutes in typical recording. [ Eric  Dec 21, 2013 ]
