Our take on the Sony HDR-MV1

by Woody Sherman
Sony

Shoot videos for posterity — or posting online

From birthday parties to YouTube™ antics, camcorders let you capture moments you can share with friends and family, or the world at large. Most newer camcorders save your videos to built-in digital memory or a removable memory card. Some models come with a built-in hard disk drive that gives you much more storage. For maximum portability, check out our smaller cams that fit into a pocket or purse. For high-def videos that look awesome on your HDTV, go for a slightly larger model with a better lens and image sensor.

The Sony HDR-MV1 gathers high-quality stereo audio

The Sony HDR-MV1 gathers high-quality stereo audio.

Where's my audio?

Here's a compact, convenient video camera designed with musicians and stage performers in mind. The Sony HDR-MV1 is here to boost your chances of bringing home the best possible sound from your shoot. With tools like 120° X/Y twin-axis stereo microphones that capture a wide soundfield, to uncompressed linear PCM or Internet-ready AAC recording, the 'MV1 does far more than almost any camera in its class to up the audio side of your production equation. The camera also features an external 3.5mm microphone input so you can connect a variety of specialized professional microphones.

That's not to say they've ignored anything about the video capture. A 120° wide-angle Zeiss® Vario-Tessar® lens gets the entire scene into the frame. And the camera features smooth 1080/30p capture that saves to readily-available SD-family Micro memory cards or Sony Memory Stick™ Micro media.

Why one wide-angle?

So why does this camera feature a fixed wide-angle? Well, firstly, it's perfect just for setting up on stage or in your home studio and capturing the entire band — or getting up close to capture your and your instrument. But it's also optimized for people who like to shoot videos with multiple cameras. Think music video.

Much of today's video editing software uses the audio signal to accurately sync up shots so you can easily cut between cameras. In order to do that reliably you need a good, clear audio signal that's stronger than you might be able to get from a typical HD camcorder's on-board, mounted-on-the-top mic. And you need a wide field of view so you can, by comparing shots, make sure your close-up camera stays in good sync with your master audio. Sony's Audio Lip Sync functionality makes this simple, by ensuring accurate audio-to-video lock.

Control and view your HDR-MV1 camera remotely with the free Sony PlayMemories app (smartphone not included)

And with the built-in near-field communication (NFC) and the camera's own Wi-Fi® ad-hoc network, you can use Sony's free downloadable PlayMemories apps for iOS® and Android™ to remotely control, remotely view, and share files from your camera.

The multi-camera problem solver

In essence, the HDR-MV1 replaces two pieces of gear that are invaluable in every multi-camera video setup. a dedicated, high-quality audio recorder, and a wide-angle camera for a "master shot." Start your production and leave it running. It'll solve a lot of problems downstream before you're even aware they exist.

    Features

Overview: The Sony HDR-MV1 is an HD video recorder with an emphasis on recording professional-quality audio. The MV1 has dual microphones in a 120° X/Y pattern to capture full stereo sound over a wide angle. This camcorder is designed for recording live performances and music videos in high-resolution CD quality. The unit comes with a rubberized slip-on lens cover with a string to prevent loss.

Lens: The HDR-MV1 features a wide-angle Carl Zeiss Tessar lens with a fast F2.8 aperture for capturing high quality video with excellent resolution, contrast, and color reproduction. The 120° wide angle lets you record the entire stage from short distances. The lens has a focal length of 2.5mm, which equivalent to 18.2mm in 35mm photography, and can focus on objects as close as 11-7/8".

Image Sensor: The camcorder is equipped with a 1/2.3 (7.77mm) back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS image sensor with 16,800,000 gross pixels and 8,400,000 effective pixels. It also features the BIONZ image processor found in most Sony camcorders.

2.7" LCD: The unit has a side-mounted 2.7" Clear Photo LCD screen with 230,400 pixels. The LCD does not swivel out like other camcorders. You can automatically or manually monitor audio levels with the on-screen audio meters.

Recording: The HDR-MV1 records high-definition video in both Full HD (1920 x 1080/30p) and HD (1280 x 720/30p) in MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format. It does not record still images. You can choose between two audio formats: Linear PCM for high resolution CD-quality sound (44.1 kHz, 16-bit) or AAC (48 kHz, 128 kbps) for files that can be shared on the Internet. The maximum continuous movie shooting time is about 13 hours. The MV1 can also record audio only in WAV format up to 2 GB per file (approx. 2 hours 50 minutes).

Media: Video recordings are recorded to microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC memory cards, as well as Memory Stick Micro (Mark2) media. The estimated shooting time for movies is as follows:

Audio Format Recording Mode Bit Rate Recording Time (Minutes)
    16 GB 32 GB 64 GB
    Linear PCM 1920 x 1080 17.6 Mbps 110 230 460
    1280 x 720 7.6 Mbps 265 535 1080
    AAC LC 1920 x 1080 16.2 Mbps 125 250 505
    1280 x 720 6.2 Mbps 320 650 1305
    Audio Recording only (WAV) 1115 2235 4485

Built-in Wi-Fi: The HDR-MV1 has built-in Wi-Fi that allows you to make a wireless connection to a smartphone or tablet. Performing wireless operations requires the use of the PlayMemories Mobile application on the smart device. PlayMemories Mobile is compatible with iPhones and iPads running iOS 5.0 or later, or Android devices running Android 2.2 and up. When connected via Wi-Fi, you can do the following:

    • Transfer movies to your smartphone or tablet: You can wirelessly transfer recordings from your camcorder and store them on your device.
    • Operate the camcorder remotely with your smartphone or tablet: Using the touch screen of your smart device, you can view the subject and start/stop recordings.
    • Connect via NFC (near field communication): If you have an NFC-compatible Android smartphone or tablet, you can make the wireless connection by simply touching the device to the camcorder. Once connected, you can also transfer movies from the MV1 to the device using the One Touch NFC method.
Note: You cannot transfer movie and audio files from the camcorder to your computer via a wireless LAN. A wired connection (USB) must be established.

Connections: The camcorder has the following inputs and outputs:

    • Headphones: A 3.5mm headphone output is provided for monitoring the audio during recording or playback.
    • Micro USB (Multi-connector): The camcorder has a Micro USB port that can be used to connect the supplied USB cable. This port is used to charge the camcorder or for downloading movie and audio files to your computer.
    • HDMI Out: The HDMI Micro (Type D) connector allows you to connect the camcorder to a TV via an optional Micro HDMI-to-HDMI cable for playing HD videos. You can set the output image resolution to Auto, 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, or 480i. The MV1 can be controlled by the remote commander of your TV when connected to a "BRAVIA" Sync compatible TV.
    • Microphone/Line In: You can connect an external microphone or other device via the 3.5mm Microphone/Line In jack. The connection supplies "Plug In Power" for microphones that require it. In order to get the proper audio level, you can switch the input to "External Microphone" or "Other Device." If set to External Microphone, the recording level can also be adjusted.

Battery: The HDR-MV1 is powered by the supplied NP-BX1 Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery. As the battery is used, the battery icon in the monitor displays the remaining battery power in four increments, plus empty. A discharged battery fully recharges in approximately 4 hours 5 minutes when connected to a running computer via the supplied USB cable. Using the optional AC-UD10 AC Adapter, you can recharge the battery in approximately 1 hour 35 minutes. You can also operate the camcorder on AC power with the AD-UD10 adapter, if desired. The estimated battery life with a fully charged battery pack is as follows:

      Movie Audio
Continuous Recording Time 130 mins 345 mins
Typical Recording Time 75 mins 205 mins
Playback Time 210 mins 255 mins

Downloadable Software: The HDR-MV1 comes with no software, however, it is recommended that you download the "MVR studio" software to your computer for quick and easy importing and editing of video and audio files recorded by the unit. You can also use MVR studio to upload videos to YouTube or share them with others. MVR studio software is free, and compatible with computers running the following operating systems:
