Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the first integrated DVD/Receiver player I have owned and it's an excellent solution if you don't want to deal with a bunch of cables. The main reason I bought it was to save space and match my Sony TV. Only complaint I have is how slow the DVD is to read and change discs other than that the sound is good for how small the speakers are. I would not bother spending the extra money on the step up unless you insist on having wireless rears. I wish it had a optical and or coaxial input but overall a nice sounding system. The DAV-HDX265 is a very affordable setup for an instant home theater.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound was very good for what I paid. It has a HDMI hookup. I did not look for nor guess that it did not have digital imputs. MY bad! I gave this system to my daugther and orderded the Onkyo HT-SR600. Great price and sound. No disc player, but already have a Blu-ray DVD player. It has 3 digital inputs,1 coax and 2 optical. Sound even better than the DAV-HDX265.

Good Product, nice for the price !

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Pros: Great Sound and picture, freinds and family were surprised so much sound out of so little speakers..( the room helped). Picture is lovely.

Cons: Do not try loading another CD or DVD or MP3 CD, while playing something, it will completly stop itwhen playing , MP3 CDs it would only shuffle that 1 cd, and not tru all of the music in all 5... So what is the purpose of having a 5 disk loaded on it, only 1 can be used at the time, so the 5 disk is just a joke. I knew it only had 1 input, but now I realized that it is also a big con, same as also not having audio output. I will need an upgrade soon.

Great Quality

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great system, especially for the price, I have it paired with a 42" 1080i plasma monitor, and it's a pretty sweet system. Great sound and picture quality especially when hooked up with an hdmi to the monitor

Remote Control
Inputs and Outputs Notes

System Overview: The Sony DAV-HDX265 is an integrated system which includes a single tray-loaded, 5-disc DVD/Video CD/Audio CD changer/receiver, and a 6-piece speaker system with a passive subwoofer. The supplied remote control can control this unit, plus a Sony TV.

Disc Changer System: The DVD changer section of the integrated receiver/DVD changer consists of a playing unit and a stocker, which transports the discs to the disc slot and playing unit. When discs are not being played, they are stored in the stocker. Note: You can use 3-inch (8 cm) discs in this unit.

S-Master Digital Amplifier: This unit is powered by the S-Master Full Digital Amplifier. It is designed to be highly efficient, producing minimal heat, while taking up 1/4 of the space of conventional amplifiers.

Auto Calibration: The receiver is equipped with an Auto Calibration function to achieve ideal surround sound settings for your room. With the included microphone placed at the listening position, Sony's DSP automatically analyzes speaker placement and sets the delay times and output levels. The microphone has a threaded insert on the bottom so it's compatible with a tripod. Speaker distances and output levels can also be manually set and the speaker sizes can be set to large or small in case you change the speakers later.

HDMI Output: The DVD audio and video signals can be up-converted and output through the HDMI jack. The HDMI output can be set to 1080i, 720p, or 480p.

Progressive Scan Output: This unit may be set to output a progressive scan or interlaced video signal from the component video output. Progressive-scan picture quality is more film-like, with more fine detail and less flicker. Progressive-scan viewing requires a TV with a progressive scan compatible component video or HDMI input.

Surround Modes: This receiver incorporates a wide variety of surround modes to bring you maximum enjoyment from your audio and video software. The surround modes include:

  • Dolby Digital
  • Dolby Pro Logic II (Movie and Music)
  • Dolby Pro Logic
  • DTS
  • Headphone Theater

Auto Format Direct: The auto decoding function automatically detects the type of audio signal being input (Dolby Digital, DTS, or standard 2-channel stereo), and performs the proper decoding if necessary. This mode presents the sound as it was recorded/encoded, without adding any effects (reverberation). If there are no low frequency signals, such as Dolby Digital LFE, it will generate a low frequency signal for output to the subwoofer.

2-Channel Stereo: In addition to the surround modes, you can select the 2-Channel Stereo mode. This mode outputs the sound from the front left and right speakers and subwoofer only. Standard stereo sources completely bypass the sound field processing. Multi-channel surround formats are down-mixed to two channels.

Digital Media Port: The HDX265 has a proprietary interface on the back panel to accommodate an optional Digital Media Port adapter. Four different adapters are available depending upon the type of device you want to connect: TDM-NW1 (Walkman cradle), TDM-BT1 (Bluetooth adapter), TDM-NC1 (Wireless Network Audio Adapter), and TDM-iP1 (iPod cradle). In some cases, you can control the connected device using the supplied remote control or buttons on the front panel.

MP3 Playback: This unit will play MP3 files recorded onto CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, and DVD-ROM discs using the ISO 9660 level 1/level 2, Joliet (CD) or Universal Disc Format (DVD) formats. Each disc can have a maximum of 200 albums and each album can have a maximum of 300 tracks.

JPEG Playback: This unit will play JPEG files recorded onto CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, and DVD-ROM discs using the ISO 9660 level 1/level 2, Joliet (CD) or Universal Disc Format (DVD) formats. All JPEG files on a disc can be played back in a slide show. Additionally, you can rotate any selected image in 90° increments. The maximum JPEG resolution supported is 3 million pixels. Each disc can have a maximum of 200 albums and each album can have a maximum of 300 images.

Resume Play: This feature allows you to resume playback of 40 DVDs from the point where you last stopped, even if you remove the disc from the player. The stopping point is cleared from memory if you press the Stop button a second time.

PBC (Playback Control) Playback: PBC playback allows you to play Video CDs interactively by following the menu on the TV screen.

Audio DRC: The Audio DRC (Dynamic Range Compression) feature is useful for watching movies late at night by letting you narrow the dynamic range of the sound track. This feature is also known as Late Night or Midnight Mode, and applies only to Dolby Digital-encoded soundtracks. You can set DRC to Standard to reproduce the soundtrack with the kind of dynamic range that the recording engineer intended, or Max to compress the dynamic range fully.

Parental Control: This unit allows you to set two kinds of playback restrictions for discs using Parental Control and Custom Parental Control. You can restrict playback of any disc according to a predetermined level. You can also restrict playback of up to 40 specific discs. A 4-digit password is required to bypass either parental control.

Bravia Theatre Sync: When the DAV-HDX265 is connected to a Sony TV via HDMI, you can operate the system with simplified controls. In addition to audio and video transmission, control functions are transmitted via the HDMI cable. This feature works with a select number of Sony Bravia TVs. The simplified controls include:

  • One-Touch Play: By pressing "Play" on the unit or the remote, the TV turns on and is set for the DVD input mode automatically.
  • System Audio Control: While watching TV, you can switch the sound to come out of either the TV or the HDX265's speakers.
  • System Power Off: When you turn the TV off by using the "Power" button

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer switches the unit off after a specified amount of time. The sleep timer can be set from 10 to 90 minutes in 10 minute increments. If you use the System Menu to set the sleep timer, you can enter the number of minutes between 1 and 90 minutes in 1 minute increments.

Display Dimmer: You can set the display to one of two brightness levels.

Preset Label: You can store up to 20 FM and 10 AM station presets so that you always have easy access to your favorite stations without having to tune them in manually each time. You can assign a name for each preset. FM tuning is done in 0.1MHz steps and AM tuning is done in 9kHz or 10kHz steps.

Subwoofer: The DAV-HDX265 system is equipped with a Digital Direct Twin-Drive subwoofer, which features a 6-3/8" cone woofer in a bass-reflex enclosure. The main unit provides a 285-watt RMS amplifier for the subwoofer.

Front Speakers: The front left and right speakers use a 2-5/8" full range cone driver in a bass-reflex enclosure. The speakers have rear-mounted spring-clip terminals and rubber feet for placing the speaker vertically on a shelf or table. For wall-mounting, you can use the single keyhole slot or the threaded M5 screw insert for optional brackets.

Center Channel Speaker: The center channel speaker uses a 2-5/8" full range cone driver in a bass-reflex enclosure. The center speaker has rear-mounted spring clip terminals for use with the supplied speaker wire and rubber feet to sit horizontally on the TV or a shelf. There are also two keyhole slots that enable you to mount the speaker to the wall.

Surround Speakers: The surround speakers use a 2-5/8" full range cone driver in a bass-reflex enclosure. The speakers have rear-mounted spring-clip terminals and rubber feet for placing the speaker vertically on a shelf or table. For wall-mounting, you can use the single keyhole slot or the threaded M5 screw insert for optional brackets.

Optional Wireless Surround Kit: If you can't (or don't wish to) run speaker wire to the back of the room for the surround speakers, you can install the optional WAHT-SD1 Wireless Surround Kit (item # 158WAHTSD1). When the WAHT-SD1 is installed in the DIR-TC1 slot on the rear panel, you can enjoy wireless performance by transmission of the sound to a separate, 2-channel surround speaker amplifier. Speaker wire (supplied with the home theater system) will need to be run from the surround amp to each surround speaker.

Video-shielding: The front speakers, center channel speaker, and surround speakers are video-shielded, allowing you to place them near your television without causing picture distortion.

Speaker Wiring: Each length of supplied speaker wire has tinned wire on one end, and a color-coded proprietary plug on the other for easy hookup. The color-coded plugs are white (Front Left), red (Front Right), blue (Surround Left), gray (Surround Right), green (Center), and purple (Subwoofer).

Remote Control

Unified Remote: The DAV-HDX265 comes with a remote (RM-ADU005) that is pre-programmed to operate this system and a number of functions on Sony TVs.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Speaker Outputs: The changer/receiver uses color-coded 2-pin proprietary jacks for all 5 channels and the subwoofer output. Speaker wires, terminated with color-coded plugs, are supplied.

Inputs: The receiver has the following inputs:

  • Rear Panel:
    • TV/Video IN: includes RCA analog audio inputs (no video inputs)
    • Digital Media Port: Proprietary input for use with optional Digital Media Port adapters
  • Front Panel:
    • Audio In/A.CAL MIC: 3.5mm mini-jack for plugging in the supplied auto calibration microphone, or for connecting an auxiliary portable audio device.

Video Monitor Outputs: You can connect your TV to the system via composite, S-Video, component video, or HDMI cables, depending upon the type of video input on the TV. The component video jacks can output a progressive signal for a better picture if the connected TV is compatible with HDTV or EDTV signals. The HDMI output is 1080i, 720p, or 480p.

Headphone Output: A 3.5mm mini-jack is provided on the front panel for plugging in headphones for private listening. When you plug in headphones, the main speakers are muted.
