Our take on the Sony DAV-HDX275

by Kristen Schaub
Sony

Home theater systems: Transform your TV experience

Enjoy powerful sound that puts you right in the middle of your favorite movies, TV shows, and video games. These pre-matched systems come with speakers and a subwoofer plus the amplification to drive them. Some models feature low-profile consoles and ultra-compact speakers for minimal visual clutter. Others come with full-sized component receivers and larger speakers for better audio performance and hookup flexibility. Many pre-matched home theater systems come with a built-in DVD or Blu-ray player.

Get the most out of your down time at home with Sony's DAV-HDX275 BRAVIA® home theater system. It features five speakers and a subwoofer for engaging surround sound with movies, TV shows, and music. Load the built-in five-disc changer with your favorite DVDs and CDs, sit back with the remote, and enjoy.

Dock your iPod and browse your tunes
Place your iPod® into the included dock, and you can listen to your tunes through the 'HDX275's speakers. You can even browse through your songs using the system's remote.

Easy automatic setup
Sony's auto calibration technology makes it a snap to adjust the surround sound settings to your specific room and furnishings. Simply place the included microphone in your favorite listening position, and the system optimizes its own speaker distance and delay settings in only about 30 seconds. The DAV-HDX275 can also upconvert your standard DVDs to 1080p resolution through its HDMI output for a smoother picture with your compatible HDTV.

General Features

System Overview: The Sony DAV-HDX275 is an integrated system which includes a single tray-loaded, 5-disc DVD/Video CD/Audio CD changer/receiver, and a 6-piece speaker system with a passive subwoofer. In addition, the system includes the TDM-iP10 Digital Media Port iPod Adapter which allows you to connect your iPod to the system. The supplied remote control can control this unit, plus a Sony TV.

Disc Changer System: The DVD changer section of the integrated receiver/DVD changer consists of a playing unit and a 5 CD-changer stocker, which transports the discs to the disc slot and playing unit. When discs are not being played, they are stored in the stocker.

S-Master Digital Amplifier: This unit is powered by the S-Master Full Digital Amplifier. It is designed to be highly efficient, producing minimal heat, while taking up 1/4 of the space of conventional amplifiers.

Auto Calibration: The receiver is equipped with an Auto Calibration function to achieve ideal surround sound settings for your room. With the included microphone placed at the listening position, Sony's DSP automatically analyzes speaker placement and sets the delay times and output levels. The microphone has a threaded insert on the bottom so it's compatible with a tripod. Speakers configuration, speaker distances and output levels can also be manually set.

Surround Modes: This receiver incorporates a wide variety of surround modes to bring you maximum enjoyment from your audio and video software. The surround modes include:

  • Auto Format Direct Standard: Presents sound as it was recorded/encoded.
  • Auto Format Direct Multi: Sound that is recorded in 2 channel (front left and right channel) is assigned to the surround left and right channel. This mode outputs sound from the front left and right speakers, surround left and right speakers an subwoofer. The center speaker does not output any sound.
  • Dolby Pro Logic: Performs Pro Logic decoding to the input signal and simulates surround sound from 2 channels sources. This mode outputs sound from all the speakers and subwoofer.
  • Dolby Pro Logic II Music: Performs Pro Logic II music mode decoding to the input signal and produces five full-bandwidth output channels from 2 channels sources. This setting is ideal for normal stereo sources such as a CD. this mode outputs sound from all the speakers and the subwoofer.
  • Dolby Pro Logic II Movie: Performs Pro Logic II music mode decoding to the input signal and produces five full-bandwidth output channels from 2 channels sources. This setting is ideal for watching videos of overdubbed or old movies. This mode outputs sound from all the speakers and the subwoofer.
  • Dolby Digital: In this format, the surround speakers output stereo sound with an expanded frequency range and a subwoofer channel for deep bass is independently provided. All six channels in this format are recorded separately for superior channel separation.
  • DTS: This format comprises of stereo rear channel and there is a discrete subwoofer channel in this format. DTS provides the same 5.1 discrete channels of high quality digital audio.
  • 2-Channel Stereo: In addition to the surround modes, you can select the 2-Channel Stereo mode. This mode outputs the sound from the front left and right speakers and subwoofer only. Standard stereo sources completely bypass the sound field processing. Multi-channel surround formats are down-mixed to two channels.
  • Headphone Virtual Theater: Outputs the sound a surround from headphone left and right. This mode is effective only when a multi-channel source is played.
  • Headphone 2-Channel Stereo: Outputs the sound from the left and right. Multi-channel surround formats are downmixed to 2 channels.

Dynamic Bass: This feature reinforces the system's bass frequency output.

Night Mode: This function allows you to enjoy sound effect or dialogue, as you would in a movie theater, even at low volume.

Volume Limiter: You can limit the maximum volume level of the system. It can be set to one of 4 different levels (1, 2, 3, Off).

A/V Sync: When the sound does not match pictures on the screen, you can adjust the delay between the picture and sound.

Dual Mono: You can enjoy multiplex broadcast sound when the system receives or plays the Dolby Digital multiplex broadcast signal. To receive the Dolby Digital signal, you need to connect a TV or other component to the unit with an optical or coaxial digital cable and set the digital output mode of the TV or other component to Dolby Digital.

Progressive Scan Output: This unit may be set to output a progressive scan or interlaced video signal from the component video output. Progressive-scan picture quality is more film-like, with more fine detail and less flicker. Progressive-scan viewing requires a TV with a progressive scan compatible component video or HDMI input.

Surround yourself with this!

Written By Dave, PA on Wednesday, April 15, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Having a low budget, I just wanted surround sound that didn't cost a fortune.
This is by no means a low budget system. The quality is top notch and sound is excellent. To look at this, one would think it costs a thousand dollars.
Believe me, you won't be disappointed in purchasing this Sony system.
It makes playing PS3 a whole new experience and my son says its like being in a theater when we watch movies.

excellent bass from such a small package. The Calibration microphone is a pretty neat inovation I would defintally Recomend. This thing shakes the widndows in my house and it only has woofer that is smaller than 7 inches. Ipod dock is a plus

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the perfect entry level home theater system. The speakers are compact and I didn't expect much when I first unpacked the system, but WOW was I surprised! The sound is rich and full, and it blew me away! I don't ever use my TV speakers anymore. I am so spoiled by the awesome surround sound from this system. I HIGHLY recommend it.

Quality and inexpensive home theatre pkg.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This system is extremely easy to hook-up if you follow directions. The mic that is used to calibrate the speakers is a neat feature. Once it is hooked up and ready to go, you will be impressed with the sound from this unit. For the money, and even for a few hundred dollars more, you probably can't find a better unit. I chose this over the one that is advertized with "wireless rear speakers" (which aren't quite) because I have a large rug that is over the carpet and covers the rear speaker wires. This is a great buy.
