    Features

Overview: The Sony HT-CT100 Component Home Theater System is a two-piece surround sound system which includes a front/center satellite speaker unit (SS-MCT100) and a powered subwoofer module (SA-WCT100). This two-piece home theater system brings simplicity and performance together by pairing a center/front speaker and a powered subwoofer to create a surround sound experience in a compact and easy to install package.

Front/Center Satellite Speaker Unit: The HT-CT100 Home Theater System's front/center satellite speaker unit (SS-MCT100) is equipped with 3 magnetically shielded 1-5/8" x 2-7/8" cone type drivers in a bass reflex enclosure. The front/center speaker unit features a 10' proprietary cable which plugs into the rear panel of the powered subwoofer module (SA-WCT100). The front/center satellite speaker can be securely placed on a stand or shelf using its eight rubber-feet or mounted to the wall with its two rear-mounted keyhole slots and mounting screws (screws sold separately). The SS-MCT100 act as your home theater systems front and center speakers as well as giving you the effect that you have rear speakers positioned behind you.

Powered Subwoofer Module: The HT-CT100 Home Theater System's powered subwoofer module (SA-WCT100) is equipped with a 6-1/2" cone type subwoofer in a bass-reflex enclosure powered by a built-in digital Sony S-Master amplifier. The built-in digital amplifier also provides power to the connected front/center satellite speaker unit (SS-MCT100). The digital amplifier is rated at 50 watts per channel for the front/center speaker unit and 100 watts per channel for the subwoofer. The powered subwoofer module also features the HT-CT100 system's inputs and outputs as well as basic controls and an LCD display. The SA-WCT100 is equipped with the following connections.

    • HDMI: The SA-WCT100 is equipped with 3 HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI output which supports x.v.Color as well as 1080/24p. The system can detect and receive the best possible video and audio signals from all connected devices via HDMI, making connection and performance as simple as plugging in a single wire. Sony's HDMI Active Intelligence, transmits both audio and video signals through one HDMI cable.
    • Digital Audio: The powered subwoofer module is equipped with 3 optical inputs and 1 coaxial input.
    • Analog Audio: The unit is also equipped with 1 pair of RCA stereo analog inputs.
    • DM Port:  Sony's DIGITAL MEDIA PORT (DMP) interface is a proprietary interface that adds networking and connectivity options to your home theater system. Just connect optional accessories (sold separately) which provide the ability to control and power devices while making set up easy and operation simple to use. The DMP will be compatible with various accessories which include a PC Client ready device (158TDMNC1, sold separately), and iPod Docking station (158TDMIP50, sold separately)
    • Proprietary Port: The powered subwoofer's proprietary port is used to connect the front/center speaker (SS-MCT100).

S-Force Surround: By using a powerful 100% digital Sony S-Master amplifier and DSP (Digital Signal Processing) technology, realistic surround sound can be generated from this two-piece surround sound system. Unlike other "virtual surround" technologies, rear sound is generated from the front/center speaker using sophisticated digital sound processing and does not need to be bounced off of side walls. No matter what the size or shape of the room or what is on the wall, it is possible to hear sounds from behind you without needing to place speakers behind you.

Digital Surround Formats: The HT-CT100 supports the following digital audio formats.

    • Dolby Pro Logic II: Creates five full-bandwidth output channels from 2 channel sources.
    • Dolby Digital: All six channels in this format are recorded separately for superior channel separation.
    • DTS: Provides 5.1 discrete channels of high quality digital audio.
    • Linear PCM:  Linear PCM is a method of encoding audio information digitally which can have up to 8 channels of uncompressed audio. This wider bandwidth allows for high resolution audio which is closer to the original. This system can accommodate 2ch LPCM through its digital audio or HDMI inputs, as well as 5.1ch and 7.1ch LPCM through its HDMI inputs.

Note: This system does not support Dolby Digital Plus,, Dolby True HD, DTS-HD or Linear PCM sampling frequencies of no more than 48 kHz.

Sound Fields: You can select from one of the following sound fields to optimize your surround sound experience.

    • Standard: Normal Sound.
    • Movie: Powerful sound in which low-pitched sound is emphasized with enhance presence.
    • Music: Best for listening to music with full surround sound experience.
    • Sports: Allows you to enjoy the atmosphere of a game, and listen to play-by-play description.
    • Portable Audio: Enjoy enhanced sound when you listen to MP3 or other compressed music files using a portable audio source.

Speaker Level: You can adjust the level (+/-6dB) of the center/front speaker and the powered subwoofer. This setting will be applied to all sound fields.

A/V Sync: You can delay the sound using this function when the image is slower than the sound when you are playing a Dolby, Digital, DTS or Linear PCM source connected by a digital audio input or HDMI.

Audio DRC: This feature narrows the dynamic range of a Dolby Digital/DTS sound track for enjoying movies at low volume.

Max Volume Limiter: You can limit the maximum volume level of the system from 1 to 49 in 1-step increments.

BRAVIA Sync: When combined with a select number of BRAVIA televisions and other Sony audio and video products, control functions will be transmitted via the HDMI cable. With "One Touch Play," operations that took several steps have been reduced to one. Press the PLAY button on the remote, watch the audio and/or the video component(s) turn on then the BRAVIA television turn on and switch to the correct video input.

Wireless Remote Control: The HT-CT100 comes supplied with a full-function IR wireless remote control which is pre-programmed to operate other Sony audio/video equipment.

Sleep Timer: The Sony home theater system features a built-in Sleep Timer which turns the system off automatically after a preset duration between 10 and 90 minutes in 10-minute increments.

LCD Display: The powered subwoofer's LCD display can be set to one of two brightness levels.

    Great Sound for the $$$

I was looking for a sound bar with quality simulated surround sound for my 42" Samsung Plasma HDTV. I got with this Sony. Instructions were easy to follow with the initial set up, and I was up and running within 15 minutes. The sound from the sound bar is crisp and the sub woofer makes it all worth while. Remote is easy to use. Worth every dollar if you are looking for a economical system without the hassel of speakers and wiring from a 5-6 speaker surround sound system.

    Super Sound for the Money

Like others have said in their reviews of the Sony HT-CT100, it's a great buy. Sound is just what we need for our small den. No more wires for rear speakers and no floor speakers at the sides of the entertainment system. Our system is connected via HDMI. Sound volume from television channels from our HD cable box is high. Our HT-CT100 volume level for enjoyable listening, for example, for the Fox News Channel and ESPN is anywhere from 20 to 25. (The HT-CT100 volume numbers go from 0 to 50.) Pretty much the same for the other cable channels. Now for DVDs and Blu-Ray discs from our Sony BDP-S550, we have to crank the sound up to 30 to 40, depending on the volume level recorded on the disc. ('Watched "Luther" last night; had to crank the volume level up to 40, and then, that wasn't too loud. ('Wish Sony had charged another $50 to $100 for a more powerful amp!) Hint: If your Blu-Ray or DVD player has a DRC setting, go ahead and set it to standard or TV mode, etc. On the HT-CT100, there is also a DRC setting (for audio compression). Set that to "Off." In other words, don't have audio compresson turned on for both the DVD player and the HT-CT100. DRC is only active when the audio encoding is Dolby Digital. So you don't need DRC (audio compression) for regular TV. I noticed sound level went down a little on TV channels with Dolby Digital when I had the HT-CT100 set to "STD." Recommend center speaker setting +4; subwoofer at -3, otherwise hard to hear voices.

Just bought a new house with the dinning, kitcen and living area as one large room and really did not want to put speakers and wires all over the place. This fits the bill fine and has a very good clean sound. I use it on blue ray and hd satilite. It's not a 5:1 system but it really sounds good and the bass will rattle the windows if you turn it up. Would recomend it to anyone who wants a simple system without all the clutter. I compared it to a Bose 2:1 and could not see the justification for the price price of the bose.

I got this product after a recomendation from Greg at Crutchfield. It is super simple, sounds great, and if you're using Sony equipment, the Bravia Synch is fantastic. I'm glad I stayed with Sony since my TV is a Sony XBR. The simplity is just what I wanted, and everyone agrees the sound is great.
I've heard better systems, with wires and speakers everywhere, and about $1000 more in cost.
If you want a simple solution that gives you 95% of the performance.. this is it. Surround Sound Simulation seems real to us... airplanes seem to buzz right past your ears.

Awesome sound for the price. The hook-up is super simple and fast. I wanted to streamline the 6.1 without sacrificing sound while the subwoofer provides dynamic bass. Granted it does not have the surround effect but there are no buying 3 rugs to hide wires.

Sony has surpassed the satisfaction bar exceedingly. Great investment you won't be disappointed!

    Fantastic solution

Written By homel, Bolingbrook, IL on Tuesday, March 10, 2009

When I began looking for speakers for better sound for my TV, I decided that I didn't want to buy another receiver. I already have a surround sound setup with a projector. This was for a very small TV setup with a couple of game consoles, a cable box, and a blu-ray player. So I started looking at powered sound bars.

I liked the Sony bar immediately because of the included sub and HDMI inputs. And the price.

After I received the unit, I hooked it up with HDMI from my blu-ray and cable box, optical from my xbox 360, and RCA jacks for my Wii. I quickly found out that my Motorola HD cable box HDMI output is very quirky, so I want back to component cables and optical for audio for the cable box.

The sound bar handles everything beautifully, and it really does sound great. Obviously it isn't like having full size speakers in a 7.1 configuration, but for what it is (SIMPLE!), it works great and sounds just as good.

I wish I could change the names of the inputs on the display, but other than that I have no complaints. I'm very happy with all aspects of the unit. Can't beat it for the price.

    Inexpensive Home Theater Option

Written By Charles, Dallas, TX on Tuesday, October 28, 2008

The CT100 is a great good looking product for a small home theater setup. Works especially well if you already have a main home theater room setup and want a secondary one in another room. The product can use Bravia Link to control connected devices so if you have a Sony TV and/or Sony DVD player with this feature, you can control them all with the CT100 remote. The sound from the CT100 is significantly better than from just a stand-alone Sony LCD TV. The included subwoofer really delivers. For the price, this system is an incredible bang for the buck.

    Sony HT-CT100

This Sony Sound Bar was chosen to mate with a new 50" Samsung Plasma TV. It is excellent! It performs just the way I wanted. That is, when set at a low volume I still hear the base woofer, but it isn't over powering. The overall range is excellent. It comes with a remote that allows you to set the sound bar to various presets like movie, games, music as well as level mode.

I would recommend this to anyone looking for a sound bar that performs excellently in a middle size room without breaking the bank. I also highly recommend Crutchfield as an excellent on-line source for electronics. This was my first purchase from them and it was flawless.
