About the Sony HT-CT390

Jeff Miller

Flexible, powerful sound bar with a cool look

When it comes to sound bar designs, I thought I had seen it all. Then Sony released their 2016 HT series, with a completely unique “lay flat” profile. The entry into the lineup is the HT-CT390 sound bar. You can wall-mount this ultra-thin bar or place it on a stand underneath your TV. It appears to sit flat, but actually tilts up a bit so the built-in stereo speakers can deliver full-range sound into the room, toward your seating position.

Sony HT-CT390

The Sony HT-CT390 sound bar has a slim design to fit under your TV.

Simple setup and wireless sub

Connect your TV to the HT-CT390 sound bar using the included optical digital cable or an HDMI cable (not included).  The included subwoofer syncs up to the bar wirelessly, so you can place it anywhere in the room near an AC outlet. Position the sub horizontally or vertically and enjoy deep, punchy bass with movie effects and music.

Sony's surround processing adds a bit of depth to the on-screen action, and you can choose from several sound modes depending on what you're watching. There are options for movies, sports, and video games among others. If you have trouble hearing characters speak, the “voice” control can lift dialogue above the rest of the soundtrack.

Bluetooth for wireless music

With sound bars, it's not all about shows, movies, and games. Built-in Bluetooth makes it easy to get the music started, too. Pair your smartphone or tablet with the HT-CT390 for wireless playback of tunes stored on your device or streamed from your favorite music service.

    Features

Soundbar & Sub System: The Sony HT-CT390 is a two-piece surround sound system which includes an amplified soundbar speaker and a wireless powered subwoofer module. This two-piece home theater system brings simplicity and performance together by pairing an active soundbar speaker and a wireless powered subwoofer to create a surround sound experience in a compact and easy to install package. The HT-CT390 home theater system features HDMI connectivity, Dolby Digital & DTS decoding, along with S-Force Front Surround; plus built-in Bluetooth w/ NFC. The HT-CT390 includes an IR remote control and offers a free app for your Apple iOS or Android device for wireless operation of the system.

    • Active Soundbar Speaker: The HT-CT390's soundbar speaker houses two full-range, 3.5" cone drivers in an acoustic suspension (sealed) enclosure, powered by a 100 watt x 2-channel S-Master digital amplifier. The soundbar speaker acts as your home theater systems front and center speakers as well as giving you the effect that you have rear speakers positioned behind you.
    • Wireless Powered Subwoofer: The HT-CT390 wireless powered subwoofer is equipped with a front-firing 5.125" woofer in a bass-reflex enclosure with front-firing port, powered by a built-in 100W S-Master digital amplifier. The wireless powered subwoofer gets its signal from the system's soundbar wirelessly, via 5.8GHZ RF wireless transmission (up to 30'). You can adjust the level of the powered sub independently from the system's main volume.

Sony Technologies: The HT-CT390 incorporates three Sony technologies to give you clear virtual surround sound without distortion.

    • S-Master Digital Amplifier: Enjoy the best of digital audio with the S-Master digital amplifier. Using a simplified, full digital signal path, the S-Master amplifier reproduces digital audio signals without the multiple analog stages required by conventional amplifiers. The result is not just more power, but significantly less distortion from heat build-up.
    • S-Force Pro Front Surround: S-Force Pro Front Surround provides realistic surround sound from this two-piece home theater system. Unlike other "virtual surround" technologies, rear sound is generated from the soundbar speaker using sophisticated digital sound processing and does not need to be bounced off of side walls. No matter what the size or shape of the room or what is on the wall, it is possible to hear sounds from behind you without needing to place speakers behind you.
    • ClearAudio+: Unique to Sony, ClearAudio+ automatically adjusts sound settings for an enriching listening experience. By bringing together expertise in digital signal processing technologies, ClearAudio+ is able to optimize audio formats to deliver a consistently clear, high-quality sound.

Dolby Digital & DTS Compatible: The HT-CT390 features Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, as well as support for 2ch PCM audio through its HDMI and Optical digital connectivity.

Soundfields: You can select from one of the following soundfields to optimize your surround sound experience.

    • Standard: Suits various sources.
    • Movie: Recreates powerful and realistic sound, along with clear dialogue.
    • Music: Suited for music programs or music videos on Blu-ray Discs/DVDs.
    • Game: Produces powerful and realistic sound, suited for video games.
    • Sports: Suited for sporting events with greater intensity.

Audio Settings: The HT-CT390 home theater system offers various audio adjustments to customize your music or movie listening experience.

    • Clear Voice: With Clear Voice you'll be sure to hear every whisper and character nuance of the dialog compared to other sounds in the scene for a dynamic experience.
    • Night Mode: Using Night mode, you can enjoy sound effects and hear the dialog clearly even at a low volume levels.
    • DRC (Dynamic Range Control): This feature narrows the dynamic range of a Dolby Digital/DTS sound track for enjoying movies at low

Mounting Options: The ultra-slim soundbar speaker is designed to fit simply in front of your TV without blocking the screen or interfering with IR receivers. Its slim profile also lends itself well to wall-mounting (wall-brackets included). The subwoofer is wireless and compact, giving you more flexibility when space is at a premium. The wireless powered sub can be placed virtually anywhere in your room (up to 30'); it can be mounted vertically or horizontally. There are no extra audio cables to run; you do have to plug the powered sub into an AC outlet.

    Connectivity

HDMI ARC Output: The Sony HT-CT390 features one HDMI ARC output to connect the soundbar to your TV's HDMI ARC input. The HT-CT390's HDMI ARC output allows audio from your TV to be sent through the soundbar system. The HDMI ARC output supports Dolby Digital, DTS, and 2ch PCM.

Note: Many televisions will only pass 2ch PCM through the ARC-enabled HDMI input from devices connected to the TV via HDMI or analog.

Digital + Analog Audio Inputs: The Sony HT-CT390 home theater system features both analog (minijack) audio and digital (optical) audio inputs for connecting external audio sources such as your DVD player and CD player that do not offer HDMI connectivity. There is single minijack (3.5mm) analog audio input and one optical (toslink) digital audio input. The optical digital input supports Dolby Digital, DTS, and 2ch PCM audio signals.

Note: The digital optical output terminals of many newer flat-panel TVs only send an audio signal in 5.1ch when receiving Dolby Digital/DTS surround sound from the TV's built-in tuner, network connection, or connected USB device; and will output only 2ch stereo from sources connected to the TV via HDMI, or RCA (like your Blue-ray/DVD player or satellite/cable box).

Bluetooth Music Streaming: The Sony HT-CT390 features built-in Bluetooth (version 4.2 with support for A2DP 1.2 & AVRCP 1.3 which allows you to wirelessly stream and control music on your Bluetooth-enabled device through the soundbar system. You'll be able to wirelessly stream stored music and music apps from your Bluetooth-enabled Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad, Android smartphone/tablet, Windows Phone/PC, Mac computer/laptop and more to the Sony HT-CT390. You'll also be able to control basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip) using the included remote control. Advanced music operation will still need to be handled from your Bluetooth-enable device. There is no song/artist information display on the speaker system or connected TV. Continue to use your Bluetooth device's screen to view song/artist info.

    • SBC + AAC Codecs: In addition to support for the standard SBC Bluetooth audio codec, the HT-CT390 offers support of AAC. By supporting AAC, the soundbar system offers better audio performance of the music streamed from your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad.
    • SSP + NFC Pairing: The HT-CT390 pairs wirelessly and effortlessly with up to 9 Bluetooth-enabled devices (only one can be used at a time) with a single press of a button. Bluetooth-enabled devices (like Android 2.3.3 or later) that have Near Field Communication (NFC) are even easier to pair with; simply touch the device to the soundbar speaker's NFC logo and they're paired. NFC Easy Connect app is needed for your Android device, unless you have Android OS 4.1 or later installed. Once paired, the HT-CT390 speaker system will automatically re-connect to your device when within range (up to 33').
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Sony HT-CT390.

USB-A Port: The Sony HT-CT390 offers a USB-A port for connection of a USB mass storage class (MSC) device, like a USB thumbdrive or portable digital audio player. The soundbar system's USB-A port supports MP3, WMA, AAC, and WAV music playback from compatible USB MSC devices formatted in FAT32 or NTFS. The unit can recognize up to 200 music folder and up to 150 music files per folder. The USB-A port can also be used to charge your portable digital audio player.

    Controls

SongPal Remote App (via Bluetooth): By downloading Sony's free SongPal remote app (from Apple's App Store or Google Play), you can use your Apple iOS (9.0+) or Android (4.4+) device to control the HT-CT390 system via Bluetooth. From the SongPal remote app, you can select input sources, switch to other entertainment apps, and customize sound settings of the soundbar speaker system. You can even use the SongPal Remote app to stream stored music and music apps from your Apple iOS or Android device to the Sony HT-CT390 system.

IR Remote The HT-CT390 comes supplied with a full-function IR remote control for wireless operation of the system.

HDMI CEC (Bravia Sync): HDMI Control allows you to easily manage and operate an HDMI Control compatible television with a single remote, when the soundbar and TV are connected via HDMI. By connecting HDMI-CEC components operation is simplified in the following ways:

    • One-Touch-Play: The TV and soundbar system are turned on at the same time for immediate playback.
    • System Audio Control: While watching TV, you can select to output the sound from the TV speaker or the soundbar speaker.
    • System Power Off: When you turn off the TV, the soundbar and connected components are also turned off simultaneously.

Auto Standby: When there is no audio signal and you do not operate the soundbar system for approximately 20 minutes, the system will enter standby mode automatically.

    Q
Can you add extra speakers to this system, more than what it already comes with?
    tristen  May 06, 2017

    A
Yes, but.... If you're trying to get a home theater system without the receiver, no. I got this for my Mother and was startled by the awesome sound and voice separation by itself (and I have a full home theater). I haven't tried this, but the product description says "...built-in Wi-Fi for music streaming and wireless multi-room audio (additional speakers sold separately)" and "two-way Bluetooth can send audio to wireless Bluetooth headphones." The reason I shop and buy from Crutchfield is the experts on the phone/live chat. I recommend you call them and describe what you're trying to do. If they can't help you, then your only alternative is to change your plans and do something they can help you with.

How do you control the volume on the HTCT 390 since you can't use the TV remote?

I use the volume controls on the HTCT 390 remote control, if you're using the sound bar and you also have volume going to the TV, they are a little out of sync. If you're playing other media through the sound bar, you might want to leave your TV volume down or off all together

Yes. The Sony offers built-in Bluetooth so you can stream audio wirelessly from your Bluetooth capable phone.
