Excellent Enhancement for a Good Television

Written By MC, Baltimore MD on Tuesday, October 17, 2006

I bought this set to add to a large Sony television to enhance the sound. It is a good value for the price, less than $200. The components are visually a good match for the television, and the sound is a substantial improvement of the sound available from the television.

The only weaknesses--and these are not complaints, given the price of the system--are that the maximum volume, while it can fill a small room sufficiently for many people, will not satisfy everyone, and there is no provision for a second set of speakers.

To my ears, the sound quality is clean and good. I consider this to be an enhancement of the television, rather than a "sound system" to be rated on its own merits. As such, it is excellent, and I have enjoyed a number of good concert films (e.g. Cream, Peter Gabriel) with it, as well as regular movies.

The remote control handles the Sony television, as well as the Sony DVD player, once I learned how to do it. I don't know if it's worth the trouble to replace the other remote controls, but it can be done if the user has Sony products.

Mounting brackets or stands are needed for the four satellite speakers, which is an extra expense. I chose to order the high-quality, substantial wall mounts offered by Crutchfield, rather than the cheap brackets available at the local store, although the speakers are small and light enough that cheaper brackets would probably work acceptably. I also had to use extra wire to install the back speakers in the corners of the room, a trivial extra expense.

    HT-DDW700 System

Product Overview: The Sony HT-DDW700 Home Theatre System consists of an A/V receiver and a 5.1-channel speaker system. All channels, including the subwoofer, are driven by the receiver. The receiver produces 133 watts per channel for the front, center, and surround channels, and 135 watts for the subwoofer. The supplied wireless remote can control the receiver and a number of other Sony components.

    STR-K700 Receiver

Digital Cinema Sound: This is a collaboration between Sony Electronics and Sony Pictures where the actual measurements of the sound acoustics in certain studios are taken. This information is programmed into this receiver so as to simulate the actual theater in your home environment. The DCS fields that you can choose from are:

    • Cinema Studio Ex. A: reproduces the sound characteristics of Sony's "Cary Grant Theater" cinema production studio
    • Cinema Studio Ex. B: reproduces the sound characteristics of Sony's "Kim Novak Theater" cinema production studio
    • Cinema Studio Ex. C: reproduces the sound characteristics of Sony's scoring stage
    • Headphone Theater: allows you to experience a theater-like environment while listening through a pair of headphones

Surround Modes: This receiver incorporates a wide variety of surround modes to bring you maximum enjoyment from your video software and music sources. The surround modes include:

    • Dolby Digital
    • Dolby Pro Logic II
      • Dolby Pro Logic
      • Pro Logic II Movie
      • Pro Logic II Music
    • DTS
    • Cinema Studio Ex. A
    • Cinema Studio Ex. B
    • Cinema Studio Ex. C
    • Hall
    • Jazz (Jazz Club)
    • Concert (Live Concert)

A.F.D (Auto Format Direct): This feature automatically detects the type of audio signal being input (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic II, 2 channel stereo) and performs the proper decoding without adding any effects.

Headphone Sound Fields: When headphones are connected, you can select the following sound fields:

    • Headphone 2CH: outputs the sound in stereo; 2-channel sources bypass the sound field processing; multi-channel surround formats are downmixed to 2 channels
    • Headphone Theater (Digital Cinema Sound): allows you to experience a theater-like environment

Digital Cinema Auto Calibration: Using the supplied ECM-AC2 microphone, you can perform Digital Cinema Auto Calibration. The auto calibration does the following:

    • Checks the connection between each speaker and the receiver
    • Adjust the speaker level
    • Measure the distance of each speaker to your listening position

Sleep Timer: The unit may be set to automatically turn off after 2 hours, 1 hour and 30 minutes, 1 hour, or 30 minutes.

Station and Source Naming: Each preset station and program source may be given an index name of up to 8 characters.

RM-AAU006 Remote: The supplied receiver remote is pre-coded to control Sony A/V equipment, including VCRs, DVDs, Minidiscs, Tape decks, CDs or Tuners. You can change the factory settings of the input buttons to suit the components of your system. For example, if you connect a DVD recorder to the DVD jacks on the receiver, you can set the DVD button on the remote to control the DVD recorder.

    Inputs and Outputs Notes

No Video Switching: The STR-K700 has no video inputs, only audio inputs. Therefore, the video outputs of the system's components should be connected directly to the TV.

Digital Inputs: The receiver has two digital inputs: one coaxial and one optical. There are no digital outputs.

    Speaker System

Satellite Speakers: The speaker system consists of two SS-MSP700 front satellite speakers, two SS-SRP700 rear satellite speakers, and a matching SS-CNP700 center channel speaker. Each speaker has a 2.75" full-range driver. Each enclosure is covered by a non-removable black metal grille. The front and center satellites have 11-1/2' lengths of speaker wire hardwired to the speaker, and the rear satellites have 32' lengths of speaker wire.

Mounting: The M5 threaded female inserts on the back of the front and rear satellite speakers allow them to be mounted using optional brackets or stands. You can also wall mount them with a single screw if you use the integrated keyhole slot. If you do not wish to mount the speakers on the wall or stand, you can place them on any flat surface using the supplied self-adhesive foot pads. Note: The center speaker has no threaded insert or keyhole slot.

Subwoofer Driver and Enclosure: The SS-WP700 subwoofer has an 7-7/8" front-firing cone driver, powered by a 135-watts amplifier channel in the receiver. For extended bass response, the woofer is loaded in a bass-reflex enclosure with a front-firing port. An 11-3/4' length of speaker wire is hardwired to the subwoofer.

Video-shielded: The front satellites, center channel speaker and subwoofer are video-shielded, allowing them to be placed near your television without causing picture distortion. The rear satellites are not video shielded.

    STR-K700 Receiver:

    • Power Output--Stereo (120-20,000 Hz, both channels driven, 6 ohms, <0.7% total harmonic distortion): 85 watts per channel RMS
    • Power Output--Satellites (1 kHz, 6 ohms, 10% THD): 133 watts x 5 channels (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R)
    • Power Output--Subwoofer (100Hz, 6 ohms, 10% THD): 135 watts x 1 channel
    • Reproduction Frequency Range: 28Hz-20kHz
    • Weight: 16 pounds 9 ounces
