Product Research

Overview: The HVL-LE1 battery-operated LED video light illuminates your subject so you can capture your images or video in low light. It attaches to the accessory shoe of your Sony alpha-series camera or Sony camcorder. You can power the HVL-LE1 with four "AA" batteries or a Sony V-series or M-series rechargeable battery.

Power Requirements: The battery compartment can hold four "AA" sized alkaline or Ni-MH rechargeable batteries. In addition, the video light can be powered by one of the following the Sony InfoLithium batteries: V-series NP-FV50, NP-FV70, NP-FV100, or M-series NP-FM500H, NP-QM71D or NP-QM91D. The video light has a battery icon that glows orange when the charge of the inserted batteries is low.

Shoe Adapters: Two shoe adapters are included with the HVL-LE1. One fits the Auto-lock Accessory Shoe found on Sony alpha-series cameras. The other is for use with standard ISO shoe mounts found on most other brands of DSLR cameras. The HVL-LE1 also has a standard 1/4" tripod mount on the bottom if you wish to mount the video light on a tripod.

Filters: The HVL-LE1 comes with a light diffuser, which will reduce the glare from the light, as well as make the light softer. A color conversion filter is also included, which reduces the color temperature to about 3200K. The diffuser and color conversion filter slide into a slot in front of the video light's lens.

Brightness Control: If you don't want to use the video light at full output, you can adjust the brightness of the light between 100% (Max) to 10% (Min) using the rotary dial on the side of the light.

Light where you need it

Written by Ralph Graves, Staff Writer - Creative, on 5/24/2012 3:02:00 PM

If you're ready to move up from basic videography, then you understand the importance of lighting. The HVL-LE1 resembles a miniature model of a stadium light with all those LEDs in neat little rows. And it really lights up an area with just four "AAA" batteries.

The light offers some nice options — so you can work with your lighting to make your shots more effective. The side flaps swing out and snap into place at 45°ree; angles. And that channels the light enough for most purposes. But I didn't have to open the flaps all the way, which gave me some interesting results.

It's good that a diffuser's included. The 'LE1 puts out some powerful white light that can wash out a subject close in. Softening the light helps quite a bit.

A pint-sized lifesaver

Our video team took this wonderful little light to CES 2013, and boy, am I glad we did. On the show floor, and off the floor in the smaller booths, we encountered all kinds of lighting situations. The HVL-LE1 gave us valuable fill light that tamed harsh shadows and helped us deal with backlit situations.

The light is perfectly modular — it's built like a tank, and you can fold its metal barn doors onto itself for added protection. It runs on AA batteries or any one of a variety of Sony rechargeable batteries, whatever's easiest. It's an LED model, so batteries last a long time.

The HVL-LE1 is versatile, too. It comes with a diffuser to smooth out the light, which we just left in there since it really does soften the shadows. Just as importantly, an amber diffusion panel is also included — this changes the light from a kind of cool white to a nice, warming glow. We left that in place, too, as it helped battle the mixed fluorescent lighting we often encountered. A handy dial on the side lets you vary the light output for even more control,

So if you're part of a run-and-gun film crew, this little light is a no-brainer. It'll make your footage look better than ever, and it won't take up a lot of space in your bag.
