A camera that's as responsive and quick as your subject
Tired of snapping out-of-focus photos from the sidelines? Or, once you get home, discovering that your kid is too small to recognize in any of your pictures? The Cyber-shot® DSC-HX100V will get you close enough to snap all the details on the field with a powerful 30X optical zoom lens. The 10 frames-per-second continuous shooting mode lets you hold down the shutter button and fire away until you get that shot of the game-winning goal. High-speed auto focus makes sure that all your photos of your star athlete are sharp and detailed.
Get closer to the people you love
The camera finds the faces in your frame and automatically adjusts its settings to give you crisp, attractive photos of friends and family. Capture fleeting smiles with the help of "smile shutter" mode, which automatically snaps a picture when it spots a grin. If your subject starts to squint as you take a photo, an anti-blink function snaps two quick shots, and then records only the one with your subject's eyes wide open.
3D Panoramic photos and 1080p HD movie mode
This camera boasts plenty of other cool features, too. The big 3" LCD screen is angled and adjustable, so you can tilt it wherever you need to when you're framing your shots. You can create 3D panoramic photos that reach beyond the scope of an ordinary wide-angle lens by sweeping the camera horizontally or vertically across your scene the 'HX100V stitches several images together in-camera to form one seamless 3D photo that you can check out on your 3D TV when you get home. (You'll need 3D glasses, too.) The DSC-HX100V also offers an impressive HD movie mode, which lets you shoot high-definition 1080p footage of all your special events. And the camera is GPS enabled, so you can record your location and map out all your trips on the computer when you return home.
High-zoom cameras have powerful built-in lenses that get you close really close to your subject. Focus in on a hawk in the tree across the meadow, or zoom across the backyard for a candid close-up of your toddler's face. High-zoom cameras tend to be a bit bigger than the average point-and-shoot because of their larger lenses. These cameras also sometimes feature advanced controls for customizing your photos.
I'm a novice photographer but already made wonderful pictures at night/very low light with it. All settings are not always obvious to find, I had to look into the manual for some, but once you know how to reach every command you are in good hands.
I've tried many different brands of long-zoom, DSLR-style cameras. This one is amazing! I've had no out-of-focus photos, even hand-holding the camera and using full zoom on auto setting. The photos are sharp and beautiful. I believe this is the best long zoom camera on the market today. If you give this Sony a try, I feel confident you also will be extremely happy!
I have been looking for a new camera for about a year so after a lot of research I finally decides on this camera, this is replacing a Fuji Finepix, I checked similar option from Nikon, Olympus, Kodak and Panasonic, but after talking to people who own them and reading a lot of review in different sites I decide on Sony, I have only had it a little over a week and have only taken a couple hundred pictures but I an happy to say that I can see a huge difference on the picture quality and I am glad I paid the extra amount for this camera, I recommended it to my brother, I hope he got it before you guys run out. Buy it if you can find it, specially if you an get it from Crutchfield.
Pros: Quality, ease of use, plenty of shooting options.
Cons: Price of spare battery.
Xmas present for my daughter, but I had to play with it.
Very good for low light, for example interior pictures for a Realtor. Surprisingly fast, as good as either of my digital SLR's as far as I can tell (recent Nikon and 4 yr old Pentax), but both of these have medium-telephoto most of the time, larger F-# in the 4+ range.
Astonishing zoom! This is my first encounter with one of the "super-zoom" breed, and I'm amazed. It goes from modest wide-angle to a long zoom effortlessly.
It was more expensive than much of the competition, I'm convinced it was worth it.
Pros: low light, fast, zoom.
Cons: size, its really not much smaller than an SLR, is lighter though.
overall a good camera for the price. pictures are beautiful, camera is light, has extra long zoom, good battery life, easy to hold in one hand with some curvature to the body, display tiltable. what don't like is the dial on top is made to be easier to use actually makes it harder to understand than older models. i guess i can use it better if i read the manual but the old sony long zoom i had was very intuitive that i never did have to read the manual. it is slow to process the pictures but for the price, it's hard to beat. an slr is faster but not the kind you want to lug around disney the whole day, 7 days in a row. this one i don't notice the weight.
Wow! This camera couldn't be better! Easy to use, superior picture and video quality, excellent in dim or dark environment, comfortable to hold and has fun features to play around with! It's a very handsome camera and the buttons are placed correctly. Everyone who I show it to is impressed. I've been a photographer for 10 years and this is the camera I've always been looking for! I've had point and shoots but never SLR's with interchangeable lenses (don't want to get into that). This camera has great distance & macro capabilities with very little shake! I can capture far away birds, icicles on a bridge without getting wet and cool fireworks at night. The videos are so clear with great sound. I can zoom in & out during the video. And take still photos easily during the video! Beautiful color but a little too red on the display - I still love the color! It's normal looking when I download it on my computer. this camera would be good for a beginner or advanced photographer and no extra lenses are needed. I've had no problems with this camera since I purchased it 2 months ago. The battery life seems very sufficient for me. I love that it has a sceen and a viewfinder! When I turn it on, the lens cap pops off automatically so it saves me a step. I love to view my pictures on the camera screen in a "slide show" format - it plays in 4 different formats & music choices! So cool! The camera has a built in help screen if you need information on something. It's all good!!!
Pros: Ease of use, cost, quality of photos, quality of HD video, battery life, low shake, GREAT in dim light, great zoom, beautiful macro, yadah...yadah...yadah...
Cons: I could say that it's heavier and bigger than my digital Elph....what do you expect!
Overall, somewhat expensive for a point and shoot camera, but out performs other cameras. Guess you get what you pay for! great camera for beginners like me, who like wonderful pictures, but dont really care for complex cameras like DSLR's Very pleased with my choice, highly recommend this camera!
Pros: I just got this bad boy today, so still learning all the in's and outs of it. But so far I am very impressed. Love the detail of the view finder, has many features similar to a dslr, but cheaper, and easier to understand and use. Love the full HD video capabilities, love the blurred background capability, 16.2 MP is of course nice too!
Cons: Somewhat heavy, course Im use to having a much smaller camera, but I like the way it feels in the hand. Wish it came with a Class 10 memory card, which is recommended for Full HD video capture!
I have not yet had the opportunity to use many of the features of this camera. Having owned Sony cameras in the past and having studied the exceptional users manual, I have no doubt that I will be thoroghly pleased with my purchase. The features and abilities of the HX100V greatly exceed my needs. My only regret is not having had this camera on previous vacation trips.
THIS CAMERA IS AWESOME! the number one feature is the 30x zoom - im a avid sports fan so i love the shots i get at sporting events.... the in camera guide manual is a classic feature...sony really came through with this one...it really simplifies what settings you'll need to be in for that perfect shot!!!!! and of course the 16megapixels make some great photos...the landscape feature is awesome also...its so much more i can say but if you are serious about your photography game this camera is the way to go!!!!
Just bought this before heading to California for vacation and soo happy I did. My other Sony cybershot was great as well but this one has more options and takes incredible pictures in low light, action shots, close-ups, etc.
I was driving down highways and taking pictures while the car was moving and they are beautiful and crisp.
Low light settings captured the mood of the setting rather than a flash washing them out.
Automatic setting is true to capturing the setting on its own. I like playing with settings but if you are not savy you can just put it on automatic and know that you will have a fabulous shot.
I purchased the Sony DSC-HX100V after looking at the other brands. It offered most of the features I wanted as I live on Green Bay and I wanted to take pictures of the birds and ships that pass by. I wanted a fast camera with a long lense and the ability to take panaramic pictures. I was able to use the Nikon and the Canon that I was considering and I found the Sony a little more to my liking. It does have a learning curve so you need to use it before you try and take some serious pictures. Each time I use the Sony I find that I can do more and more with it and faster. I can also take short movies, that is a great bonus. I was able to get a moderately good picture of a Black Bear with it and the bear was moving at max speed across the back country road. Thank You auto focus and "A" setting. I am happy I purchased the Sony, no buyers remorse here.

Global Positioning System (GPS): The camera has a built-in GPS receiver that provides positioning information for your images and movies. Self-Timer: You can set the Self-Timer mode to a 10-second or 2-second delay so you can be in the picture. You can also select two Self-Portrait Timer modes which will capture the image 2 seconds after the face of one person or two people are detected.
Focus Modes: You can select from three auto focusing methods and manual focusing:
AF Illuminator: The AF (auto focus) Illuminator briefly provides fill light to focus more easily on a subject in dark surroundings. You can set the AF Illuminator to Auto or Off.
Face Detection: Face Detection technology detects up to eight individual faces and controls flash, focus, exposure, and white balance to deliver accurate, natural skin tones with reduced red-eye. It can also give priority to children or adults. You can also select and register an individual's face to be given priority.
Anti-Blink Function: The Anti-blink function works to help counter blinking and squinting. When the camera is set to Soft Skin or Soft Snap, the Anti-blink function captures two images, recording only the photo with less squinting. If a blink is detected in other shooting modes, a warning will be displayed after you take the shot so you can determine whether or not you need to take another shot.

Built-In Flash: The camera's built-in flash features a range of 11-7/8" to 41' 8" with the zoom set to wide and 6' 6-3/4" to 19' 4-3/8" with the zoom set to telephoto. The flash settings include:
Natural Flash: Most point-and-shoot camera flash shots are not able to capture colors the way the eye sees them. The HX100V's Natural Flash mode takes a reference shot without flash, and then uses that reference to correct the color, to give you more lifelike color.
Red-eye Reduction: The flash pre-strobes before shooting to reduce the red-eye phenomenon. You can set to Auto (when Face Detection is activated), On, or Off.
Metering Modes: You can select Spot, Center-weighted, or Multi-pattern Metering. Spot metering lets you adjust the exposure to the subject, even when the subject is a backlit or when there is strong contrast between the subject and the background. Center-weighted metering measures the center of the image and determines the exposure based on the brightness of the subject. When multi-pattern metering is used, the image is divided into multiple regions and metering is performed in each region. The camera judges the subject position and background brightness, and determines a well-balanced exposure.
White Balance: When the white balance is set to auto, the white balance is set automatically in response to the condition of the subject, and the overall color balance is adjusted. When shooting under special lighting conditions, you can select the settings manually. When using flash, you can select the flash white balance mode. The white balance can also be set to Incandescent, Fluorescent 1 (white fluorescent), Fluorescent 2 (natural white fluorescent), Fluorescent 3 (day white fluorescent), Daylight, Cloudy, One Push (adjust white balance depending on the light source) or One Push Set (memorizes the basic white color which will be used).
Grid Lines: The cameras on-screen grid lines make it easy to set a subject's horizontal and vertical position.
Histogram: A histogram is a graph showing the brightness of an image. The graph display indicates a bright image when skewed to the right side, and a dark image when skewed to the left side.
In-camera Function Guide: An on-screen function guide text/icon display makes it easy to learn the camera functions that give you greater creative freedom to adjust photo settings. The function guide can be turned on or off as desired.
Date and Time: Each time you take a picture, the camera records the date and time. The date and time are not superimposed on the picture, instead saved in a data file along with the image. Using the included PMB software, you can print or save images with the date.
View Modes: The Sony DCR-HX100V's View Mode allows you to select your recorded images and movies by date, folder (stills), or folder (movies).
Auto Orientation: When the camera is rotate to shoot a portrait (vertical) image, the camera records it position change and displays the image in the portrait position.
Index View: In addition to viewing images one-by-one in full screen, you can view multiple images at once in the index view mode. The index feature lets you to display a total of 16 (4 x 4) or 25 (5 x 5) images.
