The Sony DSC-HX400V offers an impressive 50X optical zoom.

50X zoom from a point-and-shoot

The impressive 50X optical zoom on the Sony DSC-HX400V digital camera will get your attention. If you can see it with your eye, this camera's high-quality lens will bring it into sharp focus. And once you train the lens on your distant subject, you'll capture crisp, detailed images. Sony's Optical SteadyShot® image stabilization will help eliminate blur from shaky hands — an important feature for any high-zoom camera. And the backside illuminated CMOS sensor and Zeiss® Vario-Sonnar lens are designed to excel in low-light shooting situations, so colors look natural and details pop.

More than just zoom

In addition to its incredible zoom range, the 'HX400V has cool features like continuous shooting. Fire off up to 10 shots per second to capture an action sequence. Or use sweep panorama mode to shoot a 360-degree view of a landscape, cityscape, or even a large group photo from close range. Face detection, red-eye correction, and retouch options help make great-looking portraits easier and better than ever. And HD video shooting can make home movies look far slicker than the grainy footage of yesteryear.

High-resolution tilting display

Increase your shooting versatility with the 'HX400V's tilting LCD screen. It's perfect when you need to hold the camera above or below eye level while still framing your shots accurately. The 921,000-dot high-resolution display features a variable brightness setting, for a clear view of your photos and video even outdoors in bright sunlight.

    Recording Features

3" LCD Screen: The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX400V digital camera has a 3.0" XtraFine LCD screen with 921,600 dots. The angle of the LCD screen can be adjusted 60° downwards for shooting at high angles, and 90° upward for low angle shots. The LCD brightness control can be set between -2 (dark) and +2 (bright).

Recording Media: The camera is compatible with the following recording media: Memory Stick XC-HG Duo, Memory Stick PRO Duo (Mark 2 only for movie recording), Memory Stick Pro-HG Duo, SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards (Class 4 or faster). The HX-400V is also compatible with Eye-Fi cards, which allow you to upload your photos using Wi-Fi.

Image Recording Formats: The camera records still images in JPEG. Moving images can be recorded in AVCHD (H.264) with 2ch Dolby Digital audio or MP4 format with AAC stereo audio.

Image Sensor: For optimal image quality, the camera uses a 1/2.3" color Exmor R CMOS image sensor with approximately 21.1-million total pixels and 20.4-million effective pixels.

50x Optical Zoom Lens: The camera is equipped with a Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* (T-star) 50x optical zoom lens. Focal lengths are as follows: Still Images: 24-1200mm (4:3); Movies: 26.5-1325mm (16:9) and 32.5-1625mm (4:3). The aperture range is F2.8-8.0 (W) and F6.3-8.0 (T).

Zoom Function: In addition to the 50x optical zoom, you can reach higher zoom scales by engaging the Smart Zoom, Clear Image Zoom, or Digital Zoom. Smart Zoom enlarges images without causing image deterioration by partially cropping the image. The Clear Image Zoom enlarges the image digitally with a process with less deterioration. The Digital Zoom magnifies images uses an image process that causes increasing deterioration as you zoom farther. The amount of zoom for each image size (at 4:3 aspect ratio) is as follows:

    Image Size Optical Zoom
    (incl. Smart Zoom)
    Clear Image Zoom Digital Zoom
    Large 50x 100x 200x
    Medium 71x 142x 284x
    Small 100x 200x 400x
    VGA 405x 810x 810x

Optical SteadyShot with Active Mode: Optical SteadyShot can provide blur-free movies and still images. Camera-shake compensation using Optical SteadyShot has been improved with the addition of new electronic image stabilization. This makes it easier to obtain sharp movies, even when zooming in unsteady situations.

Still Image Sizes: When recording digital still images, the DSC-HX400V allows you to choose from the following image sizes and aspect ratios:

    Image Size 3:2 4:3 16:9 1:1
    Large 18M: 5184 x 3456 20M: 5184 x 3888 15M: 5184 x 2920 15M: 3888 x 3888
    Medium 8.9M: 3648 x 2432 10M: 3648 x 2736 7.5M 3648 x 2056 7.5M: 2736 x 2736
    Small 4.5M: 2592 x 1728 5M: 2592 x 1944 2.1M: 1920 x 1080 3.7M: 1920 x 1920
    VGA --- VGA: 640 x 480 --- ---

Sweep Panorama: You can record multiple images while moving the camera in an arc, either horizontally or vertically. You can choose the direction to pan the camera while taking the images. The available image sizes include:

    • Standard:
      • Horizontal: 4912 x 1080
      • Vertical: 3424 x 1920
    • Wide:
      • Horizontal: 7152 x 1080
      • Vertical: 4912 x 1920
    • 360°: 11520 x 1080 (Horizontal)

Recording Movies: Besides recording still images, you can also record movies in AVCHD and MP4 formats in the following image sizes:

Movie Format/Quality Average Bit-rate Image Size
    60i 24M (FX) 24 Mbps 1920 x 1080
    60i 17M (FH) 17 Mbps 1920 x 1080
    60p 28M (PS) 28 Mbps 1920 x 1080
    24p 24M (FX) 24 Mbps 1920 x 1080
    24p 17M (FH) 17 Mbps 1920 x 1080
    MP4 12M 12 Mbps 1440 x 1080
    MP4 3M 3 Mbps 640 x 480

Motion Shot Video: The Motion Shot Video feature lets you see the tracking of the subject's motion in high-speed, like a stroboscopic image. You cannot save the images made with Motion Shot Video as a movie file. It is simply a playback feature.

GPS: The HX-400V is equipped with a GPS sensor that receives location information from overhead global positioning satellites. Using PlayMemories Home software (downloadable from Sony), you can use the location data to display your photos on a map showing their shooting location. Even with the camera turned off, you can track and log your location for up to 24 hours.

Drive Modes: In addition to single frame shooting, the HX400V offers several types of drive modes:

    • Continuous Shooting: The camera shoots continuous images while you press and hold down the shutter release. Up to 10 continuous frames can be recorded in a single burst at approximately 10 frames per second (Hi speed) or 2 frames per second (Lo speed).
    • Self-Timer: You can set the Self-Timer mode to a 10-second delay so you can be in the picture. The self timer with a 2-second delay can help prevent blurred pictures from camera shake.
    • Self-Portrait: A Self-Portrait Timer mode will capture the image 2 seconds after the face of one or two persons is detected.
    • Self-Timer Continuous: The Self-Timer Continuous shooting mode takes 3 or 5 continuous frames after a 10 second delay.
    • Bracket: The Bracket mode lets you shoot a series of 3 images, each with a different exposure setting--one at normal exposure, one under exposed, and one over exposed. You can select from three different step values: 0.3 EV, 0.7 EV, or 1.0 EV.
    • Bracket WB: The Bracket WB mode shoots three images, one with the current color tone, one with the white balance shifted toward blue, and another toward red.

Multi Frame NR: The camera can automatically shoot multiple images continuously, combine them, reduce the noise, and record them as one image. Multi Frame Noise Reduction allows you to select larger ISO numbers than the maximum ISO Sensitivity.

Auto Focus Areas: You can select from the following auto focusing areas:

    • Wide: The camera focuses in all ranges of the finder frame automatically. When you press the shutter button halfway, a green frame is displayed around the area that is in focus.
    • Center: The camera focuses on a subject in the center of the frame. By pressing the shutter release halfway, you can lock the focus on your subject and recompose your shot with the subject off center.
    • Flexible Spot: The camera focuses on a very small area, which can be moved around within the frame.

Lock-on Auto Focus: If you are trying to photograph a moving subject, you can use the Lock-on Auto Focus feature to keep the subject in focus as it moves around the frame.

AF Illuminator: The AF (auto focus) Illuminator briefly provides fill light to focus more easily on a subject in dark surroundings. You can set the AF Illuminator to Auto or Off.

Face Detection: Face Detection technology detects up to eight individual faces and controls flash, focus, exposure, and white balance to deliver accurate, natural skin tones with reduced red-eye. It can also give priority to children or adults. You can also select and register an individual's face to be given priority. When the Smile Shutter function is activated, the camera will automatically detect and shoot a smiling face.

Scene Recognition: Scene Recognition mode operates in the Intelligent Auto mode, and automatically detects nine different types of scenes and selects the appropriate camera settings: Portrait, Infant, Night Portrait, Night Scene, Backlight Portrait, Backlight, Landscape, Macro, Spotlight, or Low Light. The camera may also recognize whether the camera is on a tripod or moving (bright or dark surroundings), and if photographer is walking.

Shooting Modes: Using the top-mounted Mode Dial, you can select from the following shooting modes:

    • Intelligent Auto Mode (iAuto): Allows you to shoot still images with the settings adjusted automatically.
    • Program Auto: Allows you to shoot with the exposure adjusted automatically (both the shutter speed and aperture value). You can also select various settings using the menu.
    • Aperture Priority: You can shoot still images after adjusting the aperture setting manually. The camera will determine the shutter speed.
    • Shutter Priority: You can shoot still images after adjusting the shutter speed manually. The camera will determine the aperture setting.
    • Manual Exposure: You can set the exposure manually. The shutter speed can be set between 1/4000 and 30 seconds. The aperture (F value) can be set between F2.8 and F8.0 (Wide Angle) or between F6.3 and F8.0 (Telephoto).
    • Memory Recall (1, 2): You can store and recall often-used modes or numeric settings in one of the two available memories.
    • iSweep Panorama: Multiple images are shot while the camera is moving, and these images are compiled into a single panoramic image.
    • Movie Mode: Allows you to record Full HD AVCHD or MPEG-4 movies with stereo audio.
    • Scene Selection Modes: You can choose from the following Scene Selection modes: Portrait, Advanced Sports Shooting, Landscape, Night Scene, Hand-held Twilight, Night Portrait, Anti-motion Blur, Pet, Gourmet, Beach, Snow, Fireworks, Soft Skin, and High Sensitivity.

Exposure Compensation: Besides auto exposure, you can adjust the exposure from +2.0EV to -2.0EV in 1/3 stop increments.

Built-In Flash: The camera's built-in flash features a range of 1.64' to 27.89' with the zoom set to wide and 7.87' to 11.48' with the zoom set to telephoto. The flash settings include:

    • Advanced Flash: the flash automatically operates in dark locations or when the subject is backlit. The ISO sensitivity is increased in a dark place to shoot a farther distance brighter.
    • Auto: the flash automatically strobes when the surroundings are dark or when there is backlight
    • Fill-Flash: the flash strobes with every shot
    • Slow Synchro: the flash is used regardless of the amount of ambient light, but the shutter speed is slower under dark conditions, allowing you to clearly shoot a background that is out of the flash-lit area
    • Rear Synchro: The flash works right before the exposure is completed every time you trigger the shutter. This allows you to shoot a natural image of the trail of a moving subject such as a moving car or a walking person.
    • Wireless: When using a wireless flash, the shading effect provides a more 3D appearance to the subject. Wireless flash requires a remote control-compatible external flash connected to the camera's Multi-Interface Shoe and a separate wireless flash placed away from the camera.
    • Off: the flash does not operate

Red-eye Reduction: The flash pre-strobes before shooting to reduce the red-eye phenomenon. You can set to Auto (when Face Detection is activated), On, or Off.

Metering Modes: You can select Spot, Center, or Multi-pattern Metering. Spot metering lets you adjust the exposure to the subject, even when the subject is a backlit or when there is strong contrast between the subject and the background. Center-weighted metering measures the center of the image and determines the exposure based on the brightness of the subject. When multi-pattern metering is used, the image is divided into multiple regions and metering is performed in each region. The camera judges the subject position and background brightness, and determines a well-balanced exposure.

White Balance: When the white balance is set to auto, the white balance is set automatically in response to the condition of the subject, and the overall color balance is adjusted. When shooting under special lighting conditions, you can select the settings manually. When using flash, you can select the flash white balance mode. The white balance can also be set to Daylight, Cloudy, Incandescent, Fluorescent 1 (white fluorescent), Fluorescent 2 (natural white fluorescent), Fluorescent 3 (day white), Custom (adjust white balance depending on the light source), Color Temp/Filter, and Custom Setup (memorizes the basic white color which will be used).

Histogram: A histogram is a graph showing the brightness of an image. The graph display indicates a bright image when skewed to the right side, and a dark image when skewed to the left side.

    Great CameraC

Written By ColleenH, Battle Ground, WA on Friday, October 03, 2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great well balanced camera. It will do more than I ever thought a camera would do on the creative side. I was looking for a camera with a good optical zoom, a good stabilizer, and GPS tagging all in one for under $500.00 dollars. Very few choices to choose from, but my research on the few I found kept coming back to this Sony product. I had own a smaller Sony camera 8-10years ago and loved it. So I ordered this camera. I am very pleased with the product so far. I have only used it on one small trip over the weekend. I found it very similar to other digital cameras I have used, the stabilizer for the zoom is amazing, and I am still learning about some of the creative features built into the camera. The only downside I see is the lens cap had no string to attach it to the camera, its booklet of instructions is not very completed and no directions on where to find more help. But a little web searching linked me to the help I was looking for. I look forward to flying with this camera to use it for the Ariel photography I love to do.

Pros: Good optical zoom Good stabilizer Not to big or heavy

Cons: No string on lens cap Instruction booklet a little lacking

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Had a Sony years ago and decided to purchase a newer Canon-never like the quality of the pictures with the Cannon, everything seemed to be backwards like the button for the zoom went just opposite of the way most cameras . Went back to a Sony and I have not been disappointed - the quality of marco photos is awesome and the camera is fairly user friendly. As for the Play Memories Home...it is awful have tired for days to get it to work with no success. Have called Sony twice and they have been very helpful but bottom line-my computer is a Dell with Windows 8 but not a touch screen and it seems there are many problems with the program on computers which have Windows 8 but not a touch screen...go figure. I have deleted that program and everything else is great. Love the WiFi with my Iphone and the Wifi on the computer works great to upload photos from the camera-so you don't need the Sony Play Memories Home-to bad, I would have enjoyed using this program but not a big deal and way to much drama to keep trying; Two things about the camera I don't like (small things) the cover for the camera lens is not attached so I figure I will lose it in a few months and the other is NO BATTERY CHARGER you have to change the battery in the camera. This is not convenient at all-I like to charge a battery while I use the other...can't do that-so I fixed that and purchased the travel battery charger so I don't have to charge the battery in the camera. Everything else seems to be great.

Pros: Feel of the camera, user friendly, photos excellent, zoom is great, Wifi is easy to use and works well, love the GPS.

Cons: Camera lens cover not attached, NO OUT OF CAMERA BATTERY CHARGER (this was big for me),

This camera is definitely a great bridge camera. It packs a lot of the futures not found on smaller, cheaper cameras without the "bother" and expense of extra lenses for a DSLR. This camera has excellent image stabilization at full zoom (50x), this camera is virtually as easy to hold stable as my Panasonic ZS1 at full zoom (10x). Another useful feature is the manual focus, which works in picture and video mode. If the autofocus focuses on the wrong object during video, a quick twist brings the desired object back into focus. This is one of the reasons I chose this camera over the competition. I also liked the EVF. I wasn't sure I would like looking at things on such a small scale, but I was impressed with how well it worked. Also the proximity sensor that automatically switches between the screen and the EVF works without a hitch. One thing I did not like is that the manual focus/zoom ring is not truly manual. When turning the ring, one can hear the servos zooming in and out, and it just feels unconnected. But even though I prefer true manual control, this is much better than simply relying on autofocus.

Pros: Long zoom range Excellent image stabilization (OIS) Manual Focus (sort of)

Cons: Manual focus not truly manual
