Our take on the Sony KDL-32XBR9

by Steve Kindig
Sony

Want XBR picture quality in a smaller screen size?

For standout picture quality in a smaller screen, it's hard to beat Sony's KDL-32XBR9. Compared to other 32" HDTVs, this XBR provides more advanced display technology, plus more HD-capable inputs for connecting the latest gear. Now you can enjoy no-compromise picture quality in a bedroom, office, den, or even a kitchen.

Motionflow™ 120Hz clears up motion blur

If your viewing includes sports, movies, or video games, you'll really enjoy the enhanced clarity of Sony's sophisticated Motionflow anti-blur technology. It doubles the video frame rate by inserting 60 entirely new frames between the original 60 frames. The system analyzes the motion of specific on-screen objects as well as overall movement in each scene, adjusting the amount of enhancement to deliver seamlessly smooth, sharp pictures.

BRAVIA Engine has the horsepower to clean up low-quality signals

High-definition video sources look crystal-clear on the KDL-32XBR9, but most people still watch at least some non-HD material. That's why it's important to choose a TV with excellent video processing. Sony's BRAVIA Engine 2™ circuitry cleans up lower-res signals by analyzing and processing each scene to enhance picture contrast, reduce noise, and optimize color.

More inputs than most 32" models

Typically, 32" TVs have a limited number of audio/video connections, but not the KDL-32XBR9. It offers a total of six HD-capable inputs, including four HDMI inputs for connecting a Blu-ray player, as well as a high-def satellite receiver and game console.

    Video Features

NTSC/ATSC/QAM Tuners: The TV is equipped with an analog NTSC tuner, a digital ATSC/8VSB tuner, and a digital QAM tuner for receiving unscrambled digital cable channels. It is not CableCARD compatible. You do not need to connect an external HDTV set-top box in order to receive High-Definition programming.

Native Resolution: The KDL-32XBR9 has a full HD native resolution of 1920 x 1080 with over 2 million pixels (more than twice the pixels of 720p HDTV). The TV's four HDMI inputs can accept 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p and 1080/24p signals, and the two component video inputs can accept 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p signals. All video signals from standard definition and high definition are upconverted to 1080p.

4 HDMI Inputs: The KDL-32XBR9 features four HDMI inputs (1 Rear/3 Side). The HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) terminals provide an uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface. The HDMI input will accept 1080/24p, 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals. The rear HDMI input also has left and right RCA audio jacks. With an HDMI-to-DVI cable, you can connect the TV to a DVI-equipped A/V component. When connecting to a DVI-equipped component, the RCA audio inputs are used and separate RCA audio cable must be connected.

24pTrue Cinema (24p Input Capability): Many movies are filmed at 24 frames per second (fps) and prime time TV programs are video taped at 24p. Seizing on an opportunity, some studios are taking a purist approach and encoding high definition video content such as Blu-ray Disc in 24p. Sony wisely takes advantage of this by including 24p input capability via HDMI on this television producing images that are smooth and natural looking.

2 Component Video Inputs: The two rear-panel component video inputs will accept 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals. If needed, component video 1 can be used as a composite video input instead.

Bravia Engine 2 Fully Digital Video Processor: The Bravia Engine 2 fully digital video processor uses a collection of unique Sony technologies to significantly reduce noise, enhance overall image detail, and optimize contrast so every scene produces sharp, vibrant, life-like images and color.

Motionflow 120Hz Technology: Motionflow 120HZ technology doubles the frame rate to help remove judder in film sources, HD content, and broadcast movies and primetime programming, creating smoother, more fluid motion that delivers a natural and realistic viewing experience.

Advanced Contrast Enhancer (ACE) With Dynamic Backlight Control: Sony's Advanced Contrast Enhancer (ACE) uses real-time image processing to dynamically adjust backlight levels for improved contrast without masking details the filmmaker intended you to see. This powerful combination of features adjusts the brightness of the backlight both to optimize image quality and reduce power consumption. It works in real time, controlling bright outdoor images and dark interior shots scene by scene for better video quality and a reduction in power use. Part of the cinematic drama in film-making comes from details found in shadows and dark areas of the picture. ACE delivers deep blacks in darker scenes, as well as fine details in shadows and other dark areas of the picture for a difference you can truly see. Sony's Advanced Contrast Enhancer (ACE) builds on the TV's excellent on-contrast ratio performance of 4,000:1. A Dynamic Contrast Ratio of up to 40,000:1 is achieved by using real-time image processing to adjust the contrast along with optimizing backlight levels.

Xross Media Bar (XMB) Interface: Sony's award-winning Xross Media Bar provides a logical and fast way to access set up menus, user controls, and more. The on-screen display comes to life by pushing the XMB menu button on the remote. Navigation through the menus is smooth and fast.

Screen Modes: You can choose from the following Screen Modes:

    Great after software update

Written By Adam, Hillsdale, Mi on Thursday, January 07, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first HD TV and I am very happy with my purchase. I wanted the 120 Hz refresh rate in order to avoid the "motion blur" I observed on some other sets. I was amazed to find a set in this price range that had the 120 Hz refresh and 1080p. I agree with others that one needs the software update. Before the update I noticed problems with the contrast changing depending on the lighting of the scene. The update fixed this. Now the picture is very stable and natural looking from scene to scene.

    Dolby 5.1 Audio

Written By George, Western Pennsylvania on Friday, January 01, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The ATSC broadcast standard not only provides 1080HD but Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. I expected that any Sony TV let alone an XBR's ATSC tuner would be capable of Dolby Digital 5.1 audio via the digital optical output. Not in this case. Sony said the TV is Dolby Digital 5.1 capable, to them capable means that it will receive 5.1 audio and down covert to 2 channel stereo. Makes sence for the internal speakers as they are not capable of 5.1 sound reproduction, but not for the digital optical output of this TV. My 10 year old Sony CD player is capable of 5.1 audio via the digital optical output! (5.1 audio CDs) My recomendation is do not buy this Sony TV if you plan on receiving 5.1 audio from over the air broadcast or cable (if using the TV's ATSC cable ready tuner). This was not an easy subject to get an answer from Sony on, so if you intend to use a TV's ATSC tuner and expect to connect the audio to your AV system and receive 5.1 audio from the TV. Call the manufacturer and make sure they confirm the TV's audio capabilities. Don't make the mistake I did.

    32" Sony xbr9 -very disappointed

Written By Doug, New York on Monday, December 14, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I researched all of the "best" small LCDs and decided on the Sony Bravia 32XBR9. Color reproduction is good, but I noticed poor off axis viewing. Even after adjusting the settings- lighter images appear very washed out if you are not sitting dead center. I read that this is a problem with ALL lcds but it is not an issue with my new Panasonic Viera G1. The color is beautiful on the Panasonic and I would highly recommend it to anyone who needs a small LCD. Very disappointed in this "top of the line" tv from Sony.

    Great picture quality & flexibility

Written By Joe, Mount Carmel, PA on Wednesday, November 18, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you don't like the picture there are many warys to alter its appearance. Being the low-end product, it does lack some features of the larger XBR line. Having an internet connection is advisable but not 100% required. Follow the XBR9 thread online for a lot more information. Making the Sony HDMI sync feature work can be 'educational'. Hold down the up- arrow and turn the unit OFF to make it do a full factory reset.

Great 2nd HDTV For the Bedroom!

Written By Michael, Calumet, MI on Wednesday, September 16, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this TV to wall mount in the bedroom, along with a Sanus tilt/swivel mount and a cable-hiding kit. It looks great, and has a gorgeous picture.

The light sensor problem mentioned in another review is solved with the update, downloadable or available on a USB drive from Sony.

The update also improved two other minor problems: the TV originally took quite a long time to display a picture when powered up, and the standby power lamp stayed on, glowing in the dark bedroom all night long. After the update, the TV starts up much quicker, and the standby light is now off.

There are extensive adjustments, and with 1920x1080 on a 32" set, the picture can be as razor sharp as you want it to be. This TV needs very little tweaking; the initial factory settings are as close to perfect as any other set I've owned.

Put most of the connectors on the back, please!

Written By Todd, Utah on Tuesday, September 15, 2009

I almost pulled the trigger on this TV but the fact that there are 3 HDMI connectors ON THE SIDE and only 1 on the back is a ridiculous design defect. I absolutely refuse to have my cables visible. Sony should be ashamed.

    GET THE SOFTWARE UPDATE!!

Written By John, Staten Island, NY on Monday, August 17, 2009

My original rating was going to be 1 star because the picture has a major problem with the
light sensor. You can't turn off the sensor and when the room is dark with a dark scene, the
screen would go light and dark on its own. I contacted crutchfield support and I can't believe
I'm saying this but they couldn't help me with the problem. They offered me the chance to
exchange the set, but having a lot of faith in Sony, I decided to research the problem. Sony
has an update for the TV which you can download and put on a USB flash drive (use a drive
no bigger then 64mb or the TV will not read it!) or you can order from sony at no charge. The
update now gives you the option to turn off the sensor and now my TV is great!! I am
holding back 1 star because I feel sony should have put the 3 HDMI ports in the back instead
of on the side on the screen. Calibrating the picture using the settings posted on the internet
from Sony's 52" version of the XBR9 leaves the picture looking fantastic. Sound is very good
for an LCD TV. This is a good buy for the price.

    Nice HDTV

Written By Loren, Iowa on Friday, July 24, 2009

I've had my set for a few weeks now and have been pleased with it. Very nice picture, and I love the fact that it has 4 HDMI inputs for future expansion. Great looking unit. Compliments my H/T system beautifully. One thing I have noticed is that the volume can vary from channel to channel more than I would like. But I attribute that to different broadcast stations and how they feed their audio to the satellite or cable providers. You know, commercials are to loud than it seems they should be compared to the program. But I don't consider it a real concern. This is the nicest TV I have had. Recommended.

    To be continued.

Written By Nathan, Tucson, AZ on Monday, July 13, 2009

I bought Sony for it's reputation and because of my personal experience with other Sony electronics I have. I also purchased a Sony Blu-Ray player. When they arrived I connected them with HDMI cables but did not get sound or picture from either one. "No Signal" was on my screen. I called the Comcast tech service people and they sent a man out to look at it. They said my cable box was working OK and they connected both units up with component cables and they worked fine but I felt I was not getting optimum performance I paid for. I contacted Crutchfield and explained the situation and they said it was probably a defective unit and they would replace it. The replacement unit is on it's way and if it doesn't work ok I will buy another brand and never buy a Sony product again.

This TV is just awesome. right out of the box it just looks great and screams high quality. No problems with setup. I am running Direct TV with a HD DVR through a HDMI cable. This TV is in the bedroom with low lighting and I have no complaints about picture. Great TV.

This TV is just a fantastic as the XBR 7 40" I purchased in Dec of 08. The picture is crystal clear with outstanding color and the sound is great. I love all the wonderful features and the TV lives up to the SONY name. Thanks to my Crutchfield advisor,Kramer it arrived quickly and in perfect condition. The set up( OVER THE PHONE )was simple with the expert guidance of their support people. You can't go wrong by choosing this beautiful set.
