Our take on the Sony SAL-35F18 Lens

by Meredith Krebs
Sony

This versatile lens can cover everything from portraits to landscapes. Its large maximum aperture of f/1.8 gathers lots of light so it's great for handheld shooting in low-light situations, shots at twilight, or photos indoors without a flash. And its compact, lightweight design won't add a lot of weight to your camera bag when you're on the go.

Features

Overview: The Sony SAL35F18 is a small, lightweight wide angle lens that features a large aperture (f/1.8) and fixed focal length of 35mm (35mm format equivalent focal length is 52.5mm) which makes it ideal for capturing wide scenes with optimal detail.

DT Lens Design: The DT Lens is a compact, lightweight lens designed specifically for the APS-C-size imager used in most Sony Alpha-series DSLR cameras.

Note: DT lenses are not recommended for use with the Sony DSLR-A900 or DSLR-A850.

Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM): The built-in Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM) eliminates the need to use a mechanical coupling system in the camera body to transfer auto focus (AF) drive power and control signals to the lens. Instead, AF control signals from the camera body are sent to the lens-mounted SAM unit, which drives the focusing lens group directly, helping to assure smooth AF response.

Manual Focus: To focus manually using this auto-focus lens, set the camera body to manual focus and adjust the focus ring on the lens. The shooting distance scale, located on the barrel of the lens, is graduated in feet as well as meters from 1.8' (0.23m) to infinity. For accurate manual focusing, look through the viewfinder while rotating the focusing ring.

Lens Hood: The lens includes the ALC-SH111 lens hood to reduce flare and ensure maximum image quality. When using the camera's built-in flash, you should remove the lens hood to avoid blocking the flash light. You can store the hood by mounting it backwards onto the lens. When attached, the hood adds a little over 1" to the length of the lens.

Flash Precautions: When using a built-in camera flash, you will have to shoot from at least 1 meter (3.3') away from your subject. With certain lens/flash combinations, the lens may partially block the light of the flash, resulting in a shadow at the bottom of the picture.

Vignetting: When you use the lens, the corners of the screen may become darker than the center. To reduce this phenomenon (called vignetting), you should close the aperture by 1-2 stops.

Specifications:

  • Equivalent 35mm-format focal length: 52.5

  • Minimum Focus: 0.8' (9.6")
  • Maximum Magnification: 0.25x

SAL-35F18

Written By J.F., charlottesville on Thursday, June 05, 2014

I love this lens. It is super clear, great in low light, and produces some great pictures. I really like how sharp the pics come out using this lens. Thanks to all the help from the Crutchfield team on recommending this one. I was really shocked on how well it worked in low light and indoors. I was able to get some pictures of deer in light levels that I have never been able to photograph in before. Very please
Pros:
Great low light/indoor lens great picture quality
Cons:
none

Plastic Fantastic!

Written By Robberfly12, State College, PA on Monday, February 03, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was wanting a small, fast lens capable of taking high quality indoor photos without flash. The SAL-35F18 lens fit the bill. Photos are tack sharp in the center and corner sharpness is also very good when stopped down slightly. It also focuses quickly and accurately. While not totally silent, the focus motor is reasonably quiet.

For an all-plastic lens, build quality is more than adequate. A nice lens hood is included, which should be used for all outdoor photos where flare can be an issue. The focus ring includes a distance scale, and turns easily (almost too easily) which facilitates manual focusing. Unfortunately, the ring is very narrow, making it somewhat difficult to find quickly. Auto-focus is so good, though, that there is little reason to use manual focus.

A quirk of the lens is that the full aperture of f1.8 is only available in A and M modes. In other modes the maximum aperture available is f2. I'm not sure if this is a limitation of the camera or the lens, but all three of my Sony camera do this. In general, it's not a big deal but worth noting.

In summary, the SAL-35F18 is a true bargain; I bought it on sale. It pretty much matches the image quality of the Sony 35 f1.4G!
Pros:
Small, light, excellent image quality, fast accurate focusing
Cons:
Max aperture of f1.8 only available in A & M modes

great second or third lens

Written By TL, Tulsa, OK on Friday, October 25, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This likely won't be your only lens for your A77, A65, A55, etc DT format camera unless you're shooting all interiors or all landscapes. I'd argue the 16-50mm f2.8 lens (yes, the expensive one that's weather resistant) is really close to a one-lens solution as it's fast enough, especially with the low-light options an A77 gives you, to handle almost everything you'll need and a great one-lens choice for walking around city sightseeing. For a second lens, I chose the Sony 55-300 DT lens as it gives such a huge effective range and is fast enough, again, for almost everything even an enthusiastic amateur would normally shoot with a big zoom. What's left is low-light, no flash environments like concerts and plays or many museum or art events. The f1.8 apeture of this 35mm lens is enough larger, if you will, and the lens itself wide-angle enough, to provide a very useful addition for those type of smaller and/or darker environments even over that very good Sony f2.8 16-50mm. The Sony/MInolta 50mm f1.4 is slightly faster, and a great choice for an A900/A99, but on a DT format camera gives you a 75mm effective focal length that can be a problem in smaller rooms or venues, plus it's typically more expensive purchased used than this lens is new.
Pros:
Great for indoor family/children/formal venue shots as produces great images in low light without needing flash. Very light and small so easily carried either on camera or "just in case".
Cons:
Limited in the same way a traditional 50mm fixed lens is on a traditional SLR or full-frame digital--great wide angle, fast lens. Seems lightly constructed but have had no issues due to that as yet.

It really is "worth every penny".

Written By Dust Monster, Yakima, WA on Thursday, November 17, 2011

This lens has been used on SLT-33/55, DSLR-A580, and SLT-A77. It performs marvelously! I have used it for portraits and some landscapes during vacation. All the photos look great. It is especially sharp at f/5.6 - 11, but this is from observing the photos. I do not test my lenses by shooting charts or brick walls.

You can't go wrong with this gem. At this price, the plastic build is to be expected. As long as you don't throw your gear around, it should be OK.
Pros:
It takes very good quality pictures at a very decent price. I have used the 50 f/1.4, 85 f/1.4, and 135 f/1.8. This lens stays on my camera the longest. It is light and compact. At one point, Sony even offered a $25 instant rebate.
Cons:
I can't think of a single thing, considering the price.

Sony 35mm 1.8 Lens

Written By Michael C, Glendale Az on Friday, April 29, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this lens in order to have the light gathering ability of a 1.8
aperture.
So far the lens has produced wonderfully clear & bright imasges in all kinds of
light.
Being a fixed focal length lens takes me back to my 35mm slr days with a fixed
50mm lens on a totally manual camera. My feet were the the zoom.
I purcahsed this lens for primarily indoor , no flash shooting but I can altrady
tell that it is going to be a very good outside lens as well.
I would recemmend this lens to a friend

Bright light lens! Worth every penny!

Written By Chris, Paramus, NJ on Saturday, January 29, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this lens expecting fast f stop and bright pics and did not disappoint. This is a must have for most unless you have F1.4 or other highly expensive lens.
Only down side is that it is standard focal length, could be a bit wider for indoor shots.
