The Sony SAL-50F18 lens is a great choice for portraits and everyday photography. Its large maximum aperture of f/1.8 gathers lots of light so you can use faster shutter speeds to "freeze" moving subjects. This lens is also ideal for taking great-looking photos at twilight, or indoors without a flash. And its compact, lightweight design won't weigh down your camera bag as you carry it around town.
- 50mm f/1.8 standard lens

Sony SAL50F18 DT 50mm f/1.8 SAM Reviews
Average Customer Review:
Great Basic Lens
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
This lens is great. The f1.8 aperture allows more light to enter allowing for slower shutter speeds and better lighting. The prime lens sometimes gets awkward when trying to take photos from an intermediate distance, but that is the trade off with a prime lens. I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in an f1.8 lens.
Pros: Great clarity. Better lighting.
Cons: Because it's a prime lens, it cannot zoom in or out. This isn't really a problem, just a consideration.
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
Does the job intended for Sony A55 camera. Easy to use. Sharp pictures. Provides ability to take close up pictures, as well as portraits.
Pros: Quality product. Fast and excellent service from Crutchfield.

Features and Specs
|Parts Warranty||1 Year|
|Labor Warranty||1 Year|
Overview: The Sony SAL50F18 is a small, lightweight lens that features a large aperture (f/1.8) and fixed focal length of 50mm (APC-C 35mm equivalent of 75mm) which makes it ideal for portrait shots.
DT Lens Design: The DT Lens is a compact, lightweight lens designed specifically for the APS-size CCD imager used in most Sony Alpha-series DSLR cameras.
Note: DT lenses are not recommended for use with the Sony DSLR-A900.
ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) Glass: The Sony SALF50F18 utilizes ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) Glass to reduce chromatic aberration at telephoto extension and correct certain wavelengths of light for sharp, clear images with well defined colors.
Circular Aperture: Because the lens' aperture blades form a near circle at the wide openings used for low-light shots, spot-light sources have a pleasing circular defocused effect.
Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM): The built-in Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM) eliminates the need to use a mechanical coupling system in the camera body to transfer auto focus (AF) drive power and control signals to the lens. Instead, AF control signals from the camera body are sent to the lens-mounted SAM unit, which drives the focusing lens group directly, helping to assure smooth AF response.
Manual Focus: To focus manually using this auto-focus lens, set the camera body to manual focus and adjust the focus ring on the lens. The shooting distance scale, located on the barrel of the lens, is graduated in feet and meters from 1.1 ft. (0.34m) to infinity. For accurate manual focusing, look through the viewfinder while rotating the focusing ring
SteadyShot INSIDE In-Camera Image Stabilization: A major reason for the lens' compact, lightweight design is the benefit of SteadyShot INSIDE in-camera image stabilization, built into every Sony Alpha-series DSLR camera, and enabling the lens to eliminate the extra weight and expense of in-lens stabilization mechanisms.
