Our take on the Sony CDX-M60UI

Keep the party hopping on your favorite bay, lake, or river with Sony's CDX-M60UI marine CD receiver. Sony's "1-wire" USB input makes it easy to connect and control your iPod® or other USB devices, and it plays both store-bought and recordable CDs, including discs loaded with MP3, WMA, and AAC files. You can add optional satellite radio or HD Radio® tuners, and you'll also find a handy front-panel auxiliary input for your MP3 player or any other outboard sound source.

Whatever you listen to, the built-in amplifier will carry the music over the noise of wind and waves, while the 3-band equalizer tailors the output for the perfect blend of lows, mids, and highs. Add some extra kick by connecting amps or a powered subwoofer to the three sets of preamp outputs.

The CDX-M60UI's fold-down face, coated circuit board, and UV-resistant paint stand up to sun, salt, and spray, so you'll enjoy years of trouble-free fun. Use the included wireless remote to control the receiver, or connect an optional wired remote so you can run the show from the cockpit while the receiver stays safe below deck.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Hands-on Research" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

Marine Ready: The Sony CDX-M60UI Marine AM/FM CD receiver features a conformal coated circuit board and a plastic cover over the top of the chassis to protect against humidity. The front panel and trim ring also contain a UV-resistant paint (tested under ASTM G154).

Display Features

Dual Illumination: You can switch the CD receiver's button illumination to Red or Blue. The player's display illumination remains white (background) and black (characters).

Contrast: This feature adjusts the contrast level of the head unit's display in 7 steps.

Dimmer: The CDX-M60UI feature a dimmer mode to dim the brightness of the display. You can choose from either "Dim On", Dim Off" or "Dim Auto". The Automatic Dimmer feature automatically dims the display when you turn your lights on.

Note: The Orange/White illumination wire needs to be connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit in order for the automatic dimmer feature to operate properly.

Auto Off: When installing in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you can set the unit to turn off automatically after a set amount of time. The Auto Off feature can be set to 30 seconds, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, or No.

Audio Section

Amplifier Section: The head unit's amplifier is CEA-2006 compliant and rated at 17 watts RMS x 4 channels at 4 Ohms and 1% THD. Peak power is rated at 52 watts per channel.

Digital Music Plus: The Sony CDX-M60UI features Digital Music Plus which is an enhancer technology used to reproduce detail and high frequency sound from compressed audio.

Dynamic Soundstage Organizer2 (DSO2): Sony's Dynamic Soundstage Organizer2 uses proprietary circuitry to induce subtle phase shifts, simulating a sound source that is placed higher than the actual speakers in the vehicle. For example, when the DSO function is used in a vehicle equipped with speakers mounted low in the front doors, it creates virtual speakers in the dash to raise the soundstage. This unit offers three levels of DSO, each with a larger and higher soundstage. You can store the DSO setting for each source.

EQ3 Stage 2: You may select one of the following EQ presets: Xplod, Vocal, Edge, Cruise, Space, Gravity, Custom or Off (flat). For the Custom mode, you can adjust the following bands:

  • Low: +10 dB to -10 dB at 60 Hz
  • Middle: +10 dB to -10 dB at 1 kHz
  • High: +10 dB to -10 dB at 10 kHz

Loudness: This feature allows you to listen to your music clearly at low volume levels by reinforcing the bass and treble. The bass level is increased to +4 dB at 100 Hz while the treble level is increased to +2 dB a 10 kHz.

Preamp Outputs: The CDX-M60UI contains three pairs of RCA preamp outputs - a front pair, a rear pair, and a non-fading pair on a 10" pigtail for subwoofer operation. The subwoofer output has a low pass filter with a selectable cut-off frequency of 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, 140Hz, 160Hz, or Off. You can adjust the subwoofer preamp output's volume level independently from the head unit's volume control from -10 to +10 in 1dB increments.

Radio Functions

Radio Tuning: The CDX-M60UI allows you to manual tune or seek tune AM/FM stations.

AM/FM Presets: The radio features 5 memory bands to store and receive AM/FM stations. You can store up to 6 presets in each of the following bands - FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1 and AM2.

If this doesn't work, you may need to revert to the older software version or wait until a newer software update is available.

Front Panel Auxiliary Input: A front panel stereo 3.5mm minijack is provided to allow the connection of a portable audio source. Just connect your portable cassette, MD or MP3 player to this unit, and you can listen to the audio from the portable player through the speakers in your marine audio system. The volume level of the auxiliary input is adjustable from -8 to +18 dB to compensate for any difference between the unit and your portable device. The aux input can be deactivated in the menu so it doesn't appear as an available source. The head unit comes supplied with a rubber cap that can be placed inside the minijack when it is not in use to keep it dry.

Optional Auxiliary Input: You can connect an additional auxiliary audio device (such as a portable digital memory player, cassette, MiniDisc, or VCR) when used with the optional XA-300 UniLink Auxiliary Input Adapter (158XA300, sold separately). The XA-300 uses the UniLink and Bus Audio inputs on the back of the receiver, and allows you to connect an optional CD/MD changer in addition to the auxiliary audio source.

Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The head unit comes supplied with an IR wireless remote control (RM-X151) for easy operation.

Wired Remote Compatibility: In addition to the supplied wireless remote, the receiver can be controlled by an optional Sony wired marine rotary commander. The optional marine remote is water resistant, so it is ideal for use on boats, where a head unit needs to be kept dry, but you need to control it from a damp remote location. The marine remote features a display which shows source and mode information, satellite radio information, and CD text information.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit to allow you to keep your vehicle's radio steering wheel remote controls when used with the optional PAC SWI-PS Steering Wheel Control Interface Adapter (127SWIPS, sold separately); or the optional Metra ASWC Steering Wheel Control Interface Adapter (120ASWC, sold separately).

Dont get wet

Written By DaveJ, West Texas on Thursday, November 24, 2011

I have been thru 2 of these units, thinking the first one was just a fluke, they both quit working when the face got damp. I even purchased the marine covers for them and the covers didnt help. Covers would open under any kind of chop in the water. Got so they wouldnt even close. Definatly not marine grade.
Pros:
Worked for 2 months.
Cons:
Is in no way water resistant. The removable face gets damp and everything stops working.

Not good at all!!!

Written By Melissa, IL on Friday, August 19, 2011

I had this brand new in a boat and it worked for about two months. At that point you had to take the face off and reset everytime you wanted to turn it on and none of the buttons worked anymore. It was kept covered in the boat all the time and the cover on the boat. Does not handle sun and spray whatsoever!!! VERY DISAPPOINTED.

Not water resistant at all

Written By Nccohiba, Raleigh, NC on Thursday, August 04, 2011

Put the radio in last year and it sounded great! IPOD controls on faceplate would not shuffle just the playlist. 1 year and 7 days after the 1 year warranty it rained for about 10 seconds and that was it. A week later it would work part time, but only with the remote. Then a day after that it was done! The only thing you hear are the beeps when you turn the ignition off.

Bought for my Harley Electra Glide

Written By McLovin, Albany, OR on Monday, July 11, 2011

I am very pleased with this CD Player. I bought the marine grade because I put this unit in my Harley Davidson Electra Glide. The CD Player sounds great and I can have all the music from my Iphone 4 or ipod right there on my motorcycle when I go on long trips. This unit looks so good in my stock fairing and should stand up to years of abuse! The installation was made easy using a Hawg Wired kit that is custom made for use with Sony units. The hand controls for volume and track selection even work! This is a very good purchase that will be getting a lot of use.

Easy Install, awesome sound!

Written By Cynthia L, North Carolina on Monday, June 13, 2011

I worked with several on line technical chat people before deciding which stereo to purchase. I opted for this Sony as I hoped it would be the easiest to exchange with my existing Sony stereo. All advisors were exceptionally patient and knowledgeable. I was able to remove and replace the existing stereo myself. My main objective was to obtain a direct connect to my Ipod versus using a FM transmitter - works like a charm! Love the ablility to control the Ipod directly from the stereo face plate. It even turns the volume down if you get a text or phone call ... Very happy with my purchase ... and thrilled that i was able to install it without using the free tech support.

Nice unit

Written By Gerard W, Noank, CT on Thursday, June 09, 2011

Installed unit in cabin of our sailboat. Replaced existing radio, easy to follow install directions. Decent sound, given speaker limitations. Easy to control. I like the fact I can stick the Ipod away in a locker and control it from the radio. Remote control allows operation from cockpit.

Great Radio

Written By Clay, Memphis, TN on Tuesday, April 12, 2011

Great little basic radio, works excellent, easy to install, and it charges your iPod
while you play.

It is a little hard to navigate but workable and be sure to buy a usb cord if you want
to play a iPod or any other MP3 player because it is not included.

Sony CDX-M60UI

Written By S/v Mavi atta, Boston, Ma on Monday, March 14, 2011

I bought this thinking I could plug in XM to the BUS IN. Nope, the BUS IN may be
for CD changers or something. To plug anything else into the BUS IN and have it
work, you need to buy an adapter for $100.
