Our take on the Sony MDR-10BT

by David Brown
Sony

The beauty of Bluetooth

Sony MDR-1RBT Bluetooth headphones

Experience the freedom of wireless listening with the Bluetooth-compatible Sony MDR-10BT headphones. (Smartphone and coffee not included.)

Great headphones have to have clear, engaging sound and supreme comfort. One thing they don't have to have is a wire tethered to your listening device. The Sony MDR-10BT headphones are a great choice for music lovers looking to take the wireless leap. That dangling wire may not seem like a big deal, but once you experience the freedom of wireless listening, it's hard to go back. A Bluetooth connection with your smartphone, tablet, or computer allows you to keep listening from up to 30 feet away from your device. So whether you're watching a movie on your iPad®, listening to music on your computer at work, or commuting on the subway, you can enjoy unrestricted movement along with the sweet sound and super-comfy fit these headphones have to offer.

Built-in music and call controls

Because you don't have to be within arm's reach of your listening device, the MDR-10BT headphones offer built-in controls. Skip tracks, play and pause music, take phone calls, and adjust the volume using the left earcup buttons. The right earcup has a power button to turn on the headphones and pair them with your Bluetooth-compatible device. If you have separate devices for listening and calling, you can pair these headphones with both devices simultaneously. That means you can listen to music on your computer and still keep these headphones paired with your smartphone for accepting incoming calls.

Cable included, just in case

The MDR-10BT's 40mm drivers deliver clear, balanced sound that will keep you listening for hours. Plus, these headphones are apt™-X compatible, so you can enjoy even better sound quality with your aptX capable smartphone or computer. A built-in rechargeable battery powers these heapdhones for up to 17 hours of playback. Use the included USB cable to charge it with your computer or an AC adapter. A battery indicator light lets you know when your battery is running low. If you ever get caught with a dead battery, you can still keep listening. Just connect the included miniplug cable and you can listen in passive mode until you can charge up again.

Features

Overview: The Sony MDR-10RBT Hi-Res stereo wireless headphones combine comfort, wireless convenience, and portability into one package. The headphones have Bluetooth wireless technology, as well as the easy pairing of NFC. The plush and soft earpads give you hours of comfort, and provide a wrap-around feel with acoustic sealing for excellent sound quality. The headphones come with a straight audio cable for those times when you can't or don't want to go wireless, a USB charging cable, and a black carrying pouch.

Bluetooth: The MDR-10RBTs feature Bluetooth 3.0 to wirelessly deliver crystal clear audio within a range of approximately 30 feet (10 meters). With built-in AAC and apt-X codec support, you can stream your favorite music from a compatible digital music player, smartphone, tablet, or computer. The headphones are compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles: Headset Profile (HSP) V1.2, Hands-Free Profile (HFP) V1.5, Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) V1.0, and Audio Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) V1.0.

NFC: With compatible Android smartphones (Android 2.3.3 or later, excluding 3.x), you can pair with the headphones using NFC (Near Field Communication) using the one-touch connection method. By simply touching the device to the "N" mark on the right ear cup, the phone and headphones are instantly connected.

Music/Phone Controls: The headphones have built-in controls on the right ear cup for music playback as well as phone calls. When listening to music, you can use the two-way slide switch for skip next/previous, fast forward/reverse, and pause/play. Pressing the slide switch also allows you to answer and end a phone call. A separate rocker switch controls volume up or down. A microphone is located on the front of the left ear cup for making phone calls.

Swiveling Ear Cups: The ear cups on the MDR-10RBT swivel out to let you listen to external sounds or carry on a conversation. When not in use, the swiveling ear cups fold flat for easy storage in the included pouch.

Drivers: The MDR-10RBTs have newly-developed 40mm HD driver units that deliver accurate and balanced sound with powerful lows and extended high frequencies.

Beat Response Control: Today's high energy music with its driving bass notes is demanding for headphones. The MDR-10RBT's Beat Response Control is a special acoustic design that helps control airflow and diaphragm movement to give you tight, deep bass response.

Rechargeable Battery: The MDR-10RBT has a built-in 3.6-volt Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery that charges via the supplied USB charging cable. Charging time is approximately 2.5 hours. A fully-charged battery provides approximately 17 hours of continuous music playback or communication time, or up to 450 hours of standby time.

Detachable Cord: The headphones come with a 49" cord that you can use when you wish to save battery power. In the passive mode, you can enjoy an extended frequency response of 5-40kHz. (The range in Bluetooth mode is 20-20kHz.) The tangle-free cord is terminated with a right-angled 3.5mm miniplug that fits into most smart devices, even with a hard case.

Terrific & Affordable

Written By Meade, Charlottesville on Wednesday, September 03, 2014

So, I've been looking for a pair of Bluetooth, over-the-ear headphones for a while now since I travel a fair bit. My criteria were: (1) Bluetooth, (2) Comfortable & packable, (3) Apt-X / AAC compatible. Unfortunately, most of the best travel headphones don't meet all 3.

I was initially looking for the "Sony MDR 1RBT, Mk2" but they are not yet for sale in the US and are among the most expensive. The older "Sony MDR 1RBT, Mk1" do not offer Apt-X support. (It's a terribly confusing naming convention!)

As for a description, the MDR-10BT cans are comfortable closed-back headphones with leatherette ear cups. This is good and bad depending on your use. They do a fair job blocking out ambient noise (I use them at work daily) even though they are not not active noise-cancelling. However, they also get hotter than some other designs. They fit close and low profile with fold-flat ear cups for travel. The controls are intuitive. The battery easily lasts all day listening; I've gone 10 hours in a stretch before and haven't had them die yet. If they do die, you can just run a normal mini-jack plug and they will work fine even with a dead battery. The NFC pairing is nice, but I've only used it twice to pair the cans to my phone and tablet. The sound is very good, but not on the same level as my Sennheiser RS180s. However, they actually sound equivalent or better (to me) compared to the Beats Studio & the Parrot Ziks since they offer native Apt-X.
Pros:
1) Apt-X / AAC (high fidelity source compatible) This is a big deal & deciding factor. E.g., there is an easily discernible difference when using high quality media (1000bps mp3 over Apt-X) vs regular Bluetooth (256bps mp3 over AD2P) 2) Good sound quality (not the best, but great for the price) 3) foldable & surprisingly low profile (3) way more comfortable than the Harmon Kardon BT (which are the only real competition in the Apt-X capable headphone category)
Cons:
Sound quality is good, but not the best. The Sony MDR 1RBT, Mk2 are the flagship alternative. They are identical in function to the MDR-10BT but have a bigger battery and higher quality drivers & diaphragms... unfortunately, they are also not yet for sale in the US and cost ~$400.

Great Value

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After reading reviews for a wide range of "over the ear" bluetooth headphones i decided to give these a try. I am very pleased with the overall sound quality.some tracks can be a little heavy on bass.other tracks sound well balanced. Connectivity works well & is simple to set up. Range is around 25-30 feet depending on obstacles that can interfere with the signal. Phone call quality & the mic work & sound good. I paired it with my ps3 & compared to wired Turtle Beach PX21 headphones fall a little short in volume & the mic (talk) quality. The controls are easy to access & work without issue. Battery life is excellent. The fit is comfortable & the earpieces can swivel. Overall i'm very happy with this purchase & i would recommend them.
Pros:
Price to sound quality Range Ease of use Comfort

Great sounds

Written By MikeB, Los Angeles, CA on Thursday, February 20, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very clean, clear sound. Mids and highs come through with some bass, but not booming. For me, these headphones have the right balance.
Pros:
Paired easily with my iPad. Reasonably comfortable to wear through a movie.
Cons:
My bad - it didn't pair with my Sony KDL-55W900A, although the TV does have bluetooth. The TV will accept inputs from a bluetooth device for playback through the TV but does not have the functionality to send audio back out.

1 question already asked

Can I use these headphones with a Sony STR DN840 AVR? [ William  Oct 19, 2014 ]
1 answer
  • I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: You won't be able to use these headphones with this receiver. The headphones and receiver both have built-in Bluetooth. But both are designed to receive signals from another Bluetooth device such as a smart phone or tablet. The receiver isn't able to send out a Bluetooth signal to the headphones If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.
