About the Sony MDR-10BT

David Brown

The beauty of Bluetooth

Great headphones have to have clear, engaging sound and supreme comfort. One thing they don't have to have is a wire tethered to your listening device. The Sony MDR-10BT headphones are a great choice for music lovers looking to take the wireless leap. That dangling wire may not seem like a big deal, but once you experience the freedom of wireless listening, it's hard to go back. A Bluetooth connection with your smartphone, tablet, or computer allows you to keep listening from up to 30 feet away from your device. So whether you're watching a movie on your iPad®, listening to music on your computer at work, or commuting on the subway, you can enjoy unrestricted movement along with the sweet sound and super-comfy fit these headphones have to offer.

Built-in music and call controls

Because you don't have to be within arm's reach of your listening device, the MDR-10BT headphones offer built-in controls. Skip tracks, play and pause music, take phone calls, and adjust the volume using the left earcup buttons. The right earcup has a power button to turn on the headphones and pair them with your Bluetooth-compatible device. If you have separate devices for listening and calling, you can pair these headphones with both devices simultaneously. That means you can listen to music on your computer and still keep these headphones paired with your smartphone for accepting incoming calls.

Cable included, just in case

The MDR-10BT's 40mm drivers deliver clear, balanced sound that will keep you listening for hours. Plus, these headphones are apt™-X compatible, so you can enjoy even better sound quality with your aptX capable smartphone or computer. A built-in rechargeable battery powers these heapdhones for up to 17 hours of playback. Use the included USB cable to charge it with your computer or an AC adapter. A battery indicator light lets you know when your battery is running low. If you ever get caught with a dead battery, you can still keep listening. Just connect the included miniplug cable and you can listen in passive mode until you can charge up again.

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Sony MDR-10RBT Hi-Res stereo wireless headphones combine comfort, wireless convenience, and portability into one package. The headphones have Bluetooth wireless technology, as well as the easy pairing of NFC. The plush and soft earpads give you hours of comfort, and provide a wrap-around feel with acoustic sealing for excellent sound quality. The headphones come with a straight audio cable for those times when you can't or don't want to go wireless, a USB charging cable, and a black carrying pouch.

Bluetooth: The MDR-10RBTs feature Bluetooth 3.0 to wirelessly deliver crystal clear audio within a range of approximately 30 feet (10 meters). With built-in AAC and apt-X codec support, you can stream your favorite music from a compatible digital music player, smartphone, tablet, or computer. The headphones are compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles: Headset Profile (HSP) V1.2, Hands-Free Profile (HFP) V1.5, Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) V1.0, and Audio Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) V1.0.

NFC: With compatible Android smartphones (Android 2.3.3 or later, excluding 3.x), you can pair with the headphones using NFC (Near Field Communication) using the one-touch connection method. By simply touching the device to the "N" mark on the right ear cup, the phone and headphones are instantly connected.

Music/Phone Controls: The headphones have built-in controls on the right ear cup for music playback as well as phone calls. When listening to music, you can use the two-way slide switch for skip next/previous, fast forward/reverse, and pause/play. Pressing the slide switch also allows you to answer and end a phone call. A separate rocker switch controls volume up or down. A microphone is located on the front of the left ear cup for making phone calls.

Swiveling Ear Cups: The ear cups on the MDR-10RBT swivel out to let you listen to external sounds or carry on a conversation. When not in use, the swiveling ear cups fold flat for easy storage in the included pouch.

Drivers: The MDR-10RBTs have newly-developed 40mm HD driver units that deliver accurate and balanced sound with powerful lows and extended high frequencies.

Beat Response Control: Today's high energy music with its driving bass notes is demanding for headphones. The MDR-10RBT's Beat Response Control is a special acoustic design that helps control airflow and diaphragm movement to give you tight, deep bass response.

Rechargeable Battery: The MDR-10RBT has a built-in 3.6-volt Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery that charges via the supplied USB charging cable. Charging time is approximately 2.5 hours. A fully-charged battery provides approximately 17 hours of continuous music playback or communication time, or up to 450 hours of standby time.

Detachable Cord: The headphones come with a 49" cord that you can use when you wish to save battery power. In the passive mode, you can enjoy an extended frequency response of 5-40kHz. (The range in Bluetooth mode is 20-20kHz.) The tangle-free cord is terminated with a right-angled 3.5mm miniplug that fits into most smart devices, even with a hard case.

I use my headphones and they work flawlessly with all my Bluetooth enabled devices. I can only assume that they would work with a Bluetooth enabled tv. I have a Samsung hdtv w/o Bluetooth. So I would probably check compatability with the tv manufacture. Sorry I know that probably doesn't provide you with much help. I can only say having had problems with their Bose counterparts, these headphones far exceeded my expectations.

Yes, BUT! You're not supposed to use "noise cancelling" or "over ear" headphones when operating a motor vehicle...for passengers...sure.

I bought these for my son and he seems to think you should be able to, he has linked to a few different blue tooth sources successfully, I don't see how the one in your merc would be any different, unless it's some sort of merc thing.

Well if the car allows audio devices to connect then yes. but usually a car looks for audio devices to play from not play too.

Can I use these headphones with a Sony STR DN840 AVR?

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: You won't be able to use these headphones with this receiver. The headphones and receiver both have built-in Bluetooth. But both are designed to receive signals from another Bluetooth device such as a smart phone or tablet. The receiver isn't able to send out a Bluetooth signal to the headphones If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.
