Our take on the Sony MDR-10R

by David Brown

Merging comfort with great sound

When you're choosing a pair of headphones, comfort can be every bit as important as sound quality. Sony hit the mark on both counts when they designed their MDR-10R headphones. They deliver clear high-frequency detail and natural midrange, while Sony's Beat Response Control offers up a nice dose of tight bass. It's a sound signature that's as pleasing as the exceptional comfort these headphones offer. The soft padding on the headband and earcups make these headphones practically disappear on your head. If you've ever worried that around-the-ear headphones might be too uncomfortable for longer listening sessions, these could be the ones that change your mind.

Overview: The Sony MDR-10R Hi-Res stereo headphones combine comfort and portability into one package. The plush and soft earpads give you hours of comfort, and provide a wrap-around feel with acoustic sealing for excellent sound quality. The headphones come with two interchangeable straight cables, including one designed for smartphones, and a black carrying pouch.

Swiveling Ear Cups: The ear cups on the MDR-10R swivel out to let you listen to external sounds or carry on a conversation. When not in use, the swiveling ear cups fold flat for easy storage in the included pouch.

Drivers: The MDR-10Rs have newly-developed 40mm HD driver units that deliver accurate and balanced sound with powerful lows and extended high frequencies.

Beat Response Control: Today's high energy music with its driving bass notes is demanding for headphones. The MDR-10R's Beat Response Control is a special acoustic design that helps control airflow and diaphragm movement to give you tight, deep bass response.

Detachable Cords: The headphones come with two 47" detachable cords. These tangle-free cord are terminated with a right-angled 3.5mm miniplug that fits into most smart devices, even with a hard case. You can choose between the following cables:

  • Smartphone Cord: This cable includes an in-line microphone/one-button remote that is compatible with most smartphones. The one-button remote lets you play/pause your music, and answer/end calls, while the built-in microphone lets you make hands-free calls. With the downloadable SmartKey app for Android, you can customize the functionality of the in-line remote.
  • Audio Cord: This cable is for audio listening only--no in-line remote or microphone.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
I bought these headphone looking for a good sound quality. I was not disappointed. They are everything I expected. They look as good as the picture shown on the Crutchfield site. They are very comfortable to wear and I think they are very good at blocking external noises. I like that the ear pads swivel for storage and travel. The L shaped connector is a great feature. The quality seems very good and the ear pads are very soft. All of these things make it a great value, but the sound is the most pleasing feature. My next set of headphones will be wireless Sony MDR-10BT.
Excellent sound and comfort.
