About the Sony MDR-ZX770BN
Easy-going travel companion
Easy-going travel companion
With both Bluetooth wireless listening and active noise canceling, the Sony MDR-ZX770BN headphones are a great value and make traveling a little easier.
If you're taking a cross-country flight or even a cross-town bus ride, slip the Sony MDR-ZX770BN headphones over your ears and relieve the woes of travel. You get the liberating convenience of Bluetooth — music plays wirelessly from your smartphone or tablet. Free-swiveling, relaxed-fit earcups are well-padded, and the headband holds them sturdy.
To make things even more peaceful, these 'phones include powerful active circuitry to block out the noise around you. There are three noise canceling modes. One press of the button on the left earcup and the headphones choose the appropriate level of noise cancellation based on the ambient noise in your surroundings.
An afternoon listen
One day after lunch, I had a chance to try these 'phones out. My conclusion? You really get a lot for the price.
They paired up with my Android phone after a quick tap created an NFC (Near Field Communication) handshake. Next, I pushed the "NC" (noise canceling) button on the left earcup and after about 2-3 seconds, I heard a beep and the low rumble of the office AC unit disappeared. While I tested them out wirelessly, there's also a detachable cable included for passive listening (with noise canceling off).
I played Donny Trumpet & the Social Experiment's mixtape/album Surf, downloaded as an MP3 to my phone. The album features a pretty wide-range of sounds, including rock, hip-hop, funk, and even gospel — sometimes within the same song. The Sony MDR-ZX770BN headphones handled it all well. The bass stood out, and I found it powerful and fulfilling. But these headphones never strained through female vocal harmonizing, marching band style horns, deep grooves, or boom-clap percussion.
Built-in music and phone call controls
Since you can go as far as 30 feet away from your device, the MDR-ZX770BN headphones offer built-in controls. Skip tracks, play and pause music, take phone calls, and adjust the volume using the right earcup buttons. A built-in mic ensures the person on the other end can hear you clearly. Along with the "NC" button, the left earcup has a power button to turn on the headphones and pair them with your Bluetooth-compatible device.

Features
Overview: The Sony MDR-ZX770BN Bluetooth wireless headphones let you enjoy your music without the hassle of dangling cables. The headphones have Bluetooth wireless technology, as well as the easy pairing of NFC. They also have Digital Noise Canceling to dramatically reduce ambient noise, letting you concentrate on your music. The headphones come with a USB charging cable, and a 48" headphone cable for those times when you can't go wireless.
Bluetooth: The MDR-ZX770BNs feature Bluetooth 3.0 to wirelessly deliver crystal clear audio from a compatible digital music player, smartphone, tablet, or computer within a range of approximately 30 feet (10 meters). The headphones are compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles: Headset Profile (HSP), Hands-Free Profile (HFP), Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP), and Audio Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP). Built-in apt-X, AAC, and SBC codec support provides maximum signal quality when streaming your audio wirelessly.
NFC: With compatible Android smartphones (Android 2.3.3 or later), you can pair with the headphones using NFC (Near Field Communication) using the one-touch connection method. You will need to download and install the free NFC Easy Connect app on your smartphone. By simply touching the device to the "N" mark on the left ear cup (when the app screen is displayed on your device), the phone and headphones are instantly connected.
Digital Noise Canceling: The MDR-ZX770BN wireless headphones have Digital Noise Canceling technology to reduce ambient noise in the headset. You can activate Digital Noise Canceling when listening wirelessly or with the headphone cable. When enabled, the unit analyzes ambient sound and automatically chooses the most effective of the three available noise-canceling modes:
- NC Mode A: Reduces noise containing a large amount of middle to low frequencies. General ambient noise in the environment is effectively reduced.
- NC Mode B: Effectively reduces noise with super low frequencies, such as from an airplane, bus, or a train.
- NC Mode C: Reduces background noise in a relatively quiet environment, such as in an office.
Headphone Cable: The headphones can be used a standard wired headphones, with or without Digital Noise Canceling, by connecting the supplied 48" headphone cable. This allows you to continue to use your headphones in places where the use of Bluetooth devices is restricted. When the battery power becomes low, you can still use the headphones, but without Digital Noise Canceling.
Music/Phone Controls: The headphones have built-in controls on the right ear cup for music playback as well as phone calls. When listening to music, you can use the two-way slide switch for skip next/previous, fast forward/reverse. Pressing the slide switch allows you to pause/play the music or answer/end a phone call. A separate rocker switch controls volume up or down. An omnidirectional, electret condenser microphone is located on the front of the right ear cup for making phone calls.
Swiveling Ear Cups: The ear cups on the MDR-ZX770BN swivel out to let you listen to external sounds or carry on a conversation. When not in use, the swiveling ear cups fold flat for easy storage.
Drivers: The MDR-ZX770BNs have large 40mm drivers that deliver full and balanced sound.
Rechargeable Battery: The MDR-ZX770BN has a built-in 3.7-volt Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery that fully charges in about 2.5 hours via the supplied USB charging cable. Battery life estimates (with Bluetooth) are as follows:
