About the Sony MDR-1ADAC Premium Hi-Res
Better sound from your digital devices
Better sound from your digital devices
Your computer, smartphone, and tablet need a little help. They're capable of delivering outstanding sound... but not out of the headphone jack. That's where the Sony MDR-1ADAC headphones come in. They can connect to the digital outputs of many of these devices, so you can unlock better sound quality with your digital tunes. When you do, you'll hear the bold sound, excellent detail, and deep, taut bass these headphones are capable of delivering.
The MDR-1ADAC's digital inputs allow direct digital connections with iOS devices as well as computers, for improved sound quality.
Built-in DAC squeezes more life out of digital music
How do the MDR-1ADAC headphones work their magic? The secret ingredient is the high-quality built-in digital-to-analog converter (DAC). That's the tiny chip that turns your digital music files into analog sound. Every smartphone and computer has one — but it's not on par with the high-performance DAC in the '1ADAC headphones. It opens up your music, improving clarity, soundstage, and bass response. Sony's S-Master® HX digital amplification ensures these headphones have plenty of power — a real difference-maker that gives your music more dynamic punch.
High-res support
If you listen to high-resolution music from sites like HDtracks, the '1ADAC headphones are an excellent way to enjoy the improved detail and dynamics these files offer. The built-in DAC is compatible with high-res files up to 24-bit/192kHz resolution as well as DSD files.
Compatible with Mac®, PC, iOS®, and Sony portables
You can connect the MDR-1ADAC headphones to the digital outputs of the devices listed below. Connecting cables are included for each.
- iOS — iPhone®, iPad®, and iPod touch® with Lightning™ connector.
- PC — Windows® and Mac® computers (driver required for Windows)
- Sony Walkman digital players
- Sony Xperia smartphones and tablets
Standard miniplug cable included for listening with any device
If you want to plug these headphones into that old iPod Classic® or another device without a compatible digital input, you can. A miniplug cable is also included, so you can connect these headphones to any 3.5mm headphone jack on a smartphone, tablet, or other device. You won't get the benefit of the built-in DAC or amplifier, but you'll still get rich, accurate sound from these super-comfortable headphones.

Features
Overview: The Sony MDR-1A-DAC high-resolution, over-ear headphones feature a built-in digital-to-analog converter for exceptional hi-res sound quality. You can make a direct digital connection to select smartphones or your computer with the supplied cables for pure, jitter-free audio, or use the supplied analog audio cable to listen to just about any music source. These ultra-comfortable headphones have soft urethane cushions that provide an acoustic seal around your ears. Silicon rings around every moving axis provides smooth and silent earcup movement. A black storage pouch with a drawstring closure is included for taking your headphones wherever you go.
Drivers: The MDR-1A-DAC is equipped with 40mm ALCP (Aluminum-coated Liquid Polymer) dome-type drivers that deliver a wide frequency response, ranging from sub-harmonic lows (4 Hz) to ultra-sonic highs (up to 40kHz with a digital connection or 100kHz via analog) for natural, soothing sound reproduction.
Direct Digital Cables: The headphones come with several cables that let you make direct digital connections to a compatible smartphone, tablet, digital music player, or computer. The audio bypasses the device's built-in D/A converter and is transferred to the headphones digitally. Cables are provided for the following:
- Lightning: This cable has the Apple Lightning connector, and is compatible with iPhone (6, 6 Plus, 5s, 5c, 5), iPad (Air, mini with Retina display, 4th generation, mini), and iPod touch (5th generation, 7th generation)
- Xperia: For use with select Sony Xperia smartphones and tablets with the digital output (Micro USB)
- Walkman: For use with select Sony Walkman hi-res digital audio players, such as the NWZ-A17SLV.
- USB: For use with computers to charge the headphones' built-in battery, and to listen to digital music files.
- Analog: A standard analog headphone cable is supplied for listening to music sources not supported by the above-listed cables, or if the headphones' battery is exhausted or being charged.
Controls: When the built-in DAC is powered on and the music source is connected digitally, the volume is controlled by the rotary knob on the headphone's right earcup. Playback control is done on the source unit. When the analog headphone cable is used, music and volume are controlled on the audio device.
Rechargeable Battery: A built-in 3.7-volt Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery powers the DAC. The battery charges in approximately 4 hours via your computer's USB port using the supplied Micro-USB cable. Battery life on a fully-charged battery is approximately 7.5 hours.
Supported Sampling Frequencies: The MDR-1A-DAC will support the following sampling frequencies from its compatible sources:
- Computer:
- PCM: Maximum 192kHz/24-bit
- DSD: 2.8 MHz, 5.6 MHz (converted to Linear PCM when playing back)
- Walkman/Xperia Digital input:
- PCM: Maximum 192kHz/24-bit
- DSD: 2.8 MHz, 5.6 MHz (converted to Linear PCM when playing back)
