Our take on the Sony MEX-1GP

Sony introduces Giga Panel technology — the next generation in digital entertainment for your car. Using its 1GB of built-in flash memory, the MEX-1GP CD player stores hours and hours of your favorite music at your fingertips, displaying track name and other file information up on the faceplate.

Best of all, you can transfer MP3 and WMA files directly from your PC to the stereo using the removable faceplate. Just take the face inside, connect it to your PC using the included USB cable, and quickly transfer your files over to the MEX-1GP's internal memory as you would with an external disc drive. And don't worry if you already have a library of digital music on recordable discs — this CD player can handle those, too.

Once your tunes are loaded into the stereo, the built-in amplifier will make sure they sound their best, with plenty of power to drive the speakers in your car. Sony's EQ3 sound shaping offers seven preset tone curves and three tone controls for custom tuning, while the Dynamic Soundstage Organizer feature improves the dull sound of poorly-placed car speakers by "lifting" the soundstage up to ear level.

Two sets of preamp outputs are on hand for your external amps and subs. You can switch the rear outputs to subwoofer mode and control the frequency and level of your bass system from the stereo. Use the auxiliary input to connect a portable music player or other external source. Controls for an optional Sony CD changer and satellite radio round out the entertainment offerings.

The fold-down, detachable faceplate with its striking design and high-contrast LCD display will look great in your dash. Use the wireless remote to control the MEX-1GP — shuffling and repeating tracks, albums, and personal playlists — from anywhere in the car.

Features

Giga Panel: The MEX-1GP features a detachable face with 1GB of built-in flash memory. Using the supplied USB cable, you can connect the Giga Panel to your computer and transfer MP3 and WMA files to the panel's internal memory. Your computer sees the panel as an external drive, allowing you to simply drag and drop the desired songs into memory. The flash memory can store a maximum of 200 folders and 500 files. During playback, the unit displays any recorded ID3 Tag information.

EzRecover: EzRecover is software that restructures the format of the Giga Panel should data become damaged during file transfer. EzRecover is stored in the panel's internal memory and must be transferred to your computer before downloading files. EzRecover is only compatible with the following operating systems: Windows XP and Windows 2000.

Drive S: The MEX-1GP uses the Drive S chassis platform. Drive S includes the CD mechanism, audio stages, 12 V power supply, and tuner section. The CD mechanism includes a suspension to resist shocks, a motor that draws less power, and a fast low-current pickup that improves durability and CD playback accuracy. The 52W x 4 S-MOSFET Power IC produces clearer, more accurate sound, less distortion, and a higher signal-to-noise ratio than previous designs.

Satellite Radio Ready: You can connect a satellite radio tuner to the MEX-1GP in a couple of ways. The unit is directly compatible with the SIRIUS SIR-SNY1 Satellite Tuner for Sony (item 607SIRSNY1). The Terk XMDirect universal XM Satellite Radio tuner (item 209XMD1000) can be connected to and controlled by the head unit when used with the XMDirect Smart Adapter for Sony (item 209SON110).

Note: In addition to the optional satellite tuner, you will also need the proper antenna and a subscription to SIRIUS or XM Satellite Radio.

ATRAC CD Playback: The MEX-1GP plays ATRAC3plus/ATRAC3 files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. Each ATRAC disc can have a maximum of 255 groups and 999 files.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit can play MP3/WMA files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. Each disc should have a maximum of 150 folders and 300 files/folders. During playback, the unit displays any recorded ID3 Tag information.

EQ3: You may select one of the following EQ presets: Xplod, Vocal, Edge, Cruise, Space, Gravity, or Custom. For each preset, you can adjust the following frequencies: 60 Hz (Low), 1 kHz (Mid), and 10 kHz (High). The level of each frequency can be adjusted from +10 dB to -10 dB in 1 dB increments.

BBE MP: When playing back MP3 files, the BBE MP circuit recovers and recreates harmonics, restoring the detail, warmth and nuances that existed in the original recording.

Dynamic Soundstage Organizer (DSO): Sony's Dynamic Soundstage Organizer uses proprietary circuitry to induce subtle phase shifts, simulating a sound source that is placed higher than the actual speakers in the vehicle. For example, when the DSO function is used in a vehicle equipped with speakers mounted low in the front doors, it creates virtual speakers in the dash to raise the soundstage. This unit offers three levels of DSO, each with a larger and higher soundstage. You can store the DSO setting for each source.

Best Tuning Memory (BTM): This feature selects stations with the strongest signals within the selected band and stores them in order of their frequency.

Rear/Subwoofer Preamp Outputs: The MEX-1GP has a set of preamp outputs that can be set for Rear or Subwoofer output. When Subwoofer is selected, the outputs have a selectable low-pass filter (78 Hz, 125 Hz, or Off) and the output level is user-adjustable.

Aux Lite Auxiliary Input: The MEX-1GP has an auxiliary input on the rear panel, allowing you to connect a separate audio source, such as a portable MiniDisc or MP3 player, or the audio output from a mobile/portable DVD player. In the past, Sony receivers required a separate adapter, however, this unit's "Aux Lite" input allows you to directly connect the auxiliary unit to the receiver's stereo RCA input jacks.

Note: If a CD/MD changer is connected to this receiver, you will not be able to connect an auxiliary source without an adapter (158XA300).

Dimmer: This unit is equipped with a wire that Sony calls an illumination lead, however, it acts as a dimmer lead. When the dimmer mode is set to "Auto" and the illumination lead receives power, the display dims to a preset level. The display brightness is not affected by the vehicle's dimmer control. Also, the dimmer feature may be turned off, so dimming does not take place when the illumination lead receives power. You may choose to dim the display at all times by setting the dimmer mode to "On."

Note: For this feature to work, the unit's illumination wire must be connected to your vehicle's dash lights wire.

45-Degree Installation: For flexibility of installation, this unit can be mounted between 0 (horizontal) and 45 degrees.

Wired Remote Compatibility: In addition to the supplied wireless remote, the receiver can be controlled by an optional wired rotary commander (item 158RMX4S). Once the wired remote is connected, you can change the control direction of the remote, depending upon which side of the steering wheel you choose to mount the remote.

Changer Controls

Compatibility: This unit is compatible with Sony Unilink CD/MP3 and MD changers.

Multiple Changer Control: A maximum of 5 CD changers, 5 CD/MP3 changers, or 5 MD changers may be connected to this receiver. When connecting CD, CD/MP3 and MD changers, you may connect up to a total of 7 changers (but there must not be more than 5 of one type of changer). When connecting more than one changer to this receiver, you must use the Sony XA-C30 source selector.

Note

Display Illumination/Clock Display: Pressing the Off button once will turn off audio output, but the clock display and face/button illumination remain on. This makes the clock display and face/button illumination "Keyed" instead of "Unit On" only. To turn the unit off completely, you must press the Off button for two seconds.

Note: When installing in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you must turn the radio completely off (this defeats keyed operation), or you may wire the accessory power wire of this radio to an alternate source of accessory power to retain keyed clock and face/button illumination operation.

Buy It Now

Written By David, Robesonia, PA on Monday, January 14, 2008

This unit is an awesome buy!!! I bought it for the Giga Panel feature. If you have Windows Media Player 11, you just plug the faceplate into your PC and choose SYNC and drag the files onto it. All conversions are automatic. The controls are easy to use. The FM reception is great, and my Sirius tuner works well with the unit. It sounds great with the equalizer options, although I leave mine on XPLOD. There is no other receiver in this price range that even comes close to what I have now. Thanks Crutchfield for the 3 day delivery, great price, and helpful reviews. Crutchfield ROCKS!! (and NO, I do not work for Crutchfield, but I wish I did!!)

What a difference!

Written By osiris1741, College Park, MD on Friday, January 04, 2008

I hooked this up in my 2001 Jeep Wrangler. I couldn't believe how much better it sounded! It actually pushes the stock subwoofer and makes the component speakers sound amazing. The ability to download music directly to the faceplace keeps what little room I already have in the Jeep clutter free. A+

Very good

Written By Craig, Lake Okeechobee, FL on Thursday, June 14, 2007

I purchased this radio because of its great FM sensitivity. The giga panel was a pleasant plus. Given the chance, I would buy the radio again. It would be nice if the selection titles would continue to scroll as the song plays. It would be nice if the radio picked up the information many radio stations send (song titles and such) and displayed them. But it is the perfect radio for "the sticks." I can listen to many more stations than was possible with my factory radio. And when the stations don't come in, there's always the songs stored in the memory. BTW, the problem with WMA files is that the unit will not play songs that are digitally protected (DRM.) If I had known the radio would sound this good, I would have purchased new speakers at the same it. Installation was easy.

Love It

Written By Brad, Minneapolis, MN on Wednesday, June 13, 2007

I love the new deck. Installation wasn't bad but I added the steering wheel control adaptor. If it was just the deck it would have been easy.
Making playlists isn't as hard as one review said. It's just a matter of making folders in windows explorer. The fit was a bit tight in my car (2002 Pathfinder) but it worked. I had to use the other faceplate instead of the factory one that comes with the deck.
Cons. All when I use my steering control. The up/down buttons either control the radio channels OR advancing the track on CD or gigapanel. I have to program it one way or the other. Since it is set to adjust the radio channels right now, the other con is, when you cycle through your presets, 1-6, after 6, instead of going back to Ch. 1, it'll jump to FM2 or channel 7, then FM3. I just don't have that many stations programed in. You then have to cycle through your bands to get back to FM1. I'm going to reprogram it so I have to use the radio buttons on the head unit.
Works Great, I want to get one for our other car.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly...

Written By Gary, Dearborn, MI on Friday, June 08, 2007

Good - Excellent sound reproduction with both CDs and the faceplate memory using MP3 files...
Bad - No auto-scan feature for either the faceplate memory or the tuner... Makes it a pain to locate a particular track or to find radio stations away from your home area... Also, it won't play any of my .wma files, although it specifically claims to be able to do so...
Ugly - It allows you to program in up to 18 FM and 12 AM radio stations, but erases them all whenever the battery is disconnected for any reason...

It makes me really miss all the features on my old Blaupunkt Tokyo unit which I had to finally replace when its face went completely blank after many years of use...

Might Be Okay if the customer service was better!!!

Written By Raeanne, Phoenix, AZ on Wednesday, April 25, 2007

After having my stereo stolen from my Ford Ranger, I was certainly looking for something to fill the whole in my dashboard. I mistakenly chose another SONY product thinking that it would just plug right into everything I already had in my dash since the stereo that was previously there was a sony. I was sadly mistaken that none of the connections were compatible with each other, but it would just make a little more work. I owned this product for only four months before it stopped recognizing the fact that I had a CD player or XM radio. I tried everything that I could think of before even calling customer service, and nothing fixed the problem but only made it worse. So, Crutchfield asked me to call Sony, who said there was a problem (like I havent already established that!) and told me that I needed to return the product, then wait for 7-10 after the product was recieved to get my unit back, or the exchange. So, Now I am without a stereo completely for 2-3 weeks?!!!? Last I checked it is NOT my fault the stereo is broken!!!

THANKS to Crutchfield, who has always helped me in a friendly manner, I am waiting for a new unit.

Don't impulse buy !

Written By Robert, Greenville SC on Tuesday, October 31, 2006

The features of this unit can be overwhelming . I was so impressed with the memory capacity. I have been disapointed with some of the quirks. My first unit seemed to have a faulty tuner, returned it. The replacement has lost all memory of radio and mp3 a couple of times in a month and a couple times a week radio presets, clock, and other personal settings . No loudness option . when pushing the volume button to adjust tone it never shows them in the same order. although you can use Windows XP to load music, setting up albums is near impossible . There has to be special software somewhere. It is compatible with PAC steering wheel controls , a big plus for OEM buttons. The unit remembers how you set up the tone for each mode or station. Robert

This stereo is awesome. I counted 89 tracks on the gigapanel taking up only 150 mb of space. it looks good, sounds good, and the soundstage feature is amazing. definately a great way to carry your favorite sounds with you everywhere on the go.

Instant Upgrade

Written By Adam, Cleveland, OH on Saturday, September 02, 2006

I was a bit skeptical at first, but I am overwhelmingly impressed. Even with the original factory speakers, this unit drives them much harder, louder and cleaner, and, with the built in EQ and DSO, produces the best sound I have ever heard. MP3 and CD playback is fantastic. The unit itself is easy to use, looks great in the dash, and the install went without a hitch with Crutchfield's included wiring harness, mounting bracket, antenna adapter and instructions. With my car's 6x9s, I already get plenty of bass, but I can't wait to wire up my subs and see how much better they pound with this unit.
