Features
Drive-S HX:
The MEX-BT5000 uses the Drive-S HX chassis platform. Drive-S HX includes the CD
mechanism, audio stages, 12 V power supply, and tuner section. The CD mechanism
includes a suspension to resist shocks, a motor that draws less power, and a
fast low-current pickup that improves durability and CD playback accuracy. The
52W x 4 S-MOSFET Power IC produces clear, accurate sound, with little
distortion, and a high signal-to-noise ratio.
ATRAC CD Playback: The
MEX-BT5000
plays ATRAC3plus/ATRAC3 files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. Each ATRAC disc
can have a maximum of 255 groups and 999 files. During playback, the unit
displays any recorded folder/file name and text information.
MP3/WMA Playback:
This unit can play MP3 and WMA files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs in ISO9660
Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. Each disc should have a maximum of
150 folders and 300 files/folders. During playback, the unit displays any
recorded ID3 or WMA tag information.
EQ3: You may select one of
seven EQ presets; Xplod, Vocal, Edge, Cruise, Space, Gravity, or Custom. For
each preset, you can adjust three EQ bands, each with selectable center
frequencies; Low (60 or 100 Hz), Mid (500 Hz or 1 kHz),
and High (10 or 12.5 kHz). The level of each frequency can be adjusted from +10 dB to
-10 dB in 1 dB increments.
BBE MP:
When playing back MP3 files, the BBE MP circuit recovers and recreates
harmonics, restoring the detail, warmth and nuances that existed in the original
recording.
Dynamic Soundstage Organizer
(DSO): Sony's Dynamic Soundstage
Organizer uses proprietary circuitry to induce subtle phase shifts, simulating a
sound source that is placed higher than the actual speakers in the vehicle. For
example, when the DSO function is used in a vehicle equipped with speakers
mounted low in the front doors, it creates virtual speakers in the dash to raise
the soundstage. This unit offers three levels of DSO, each with a larger and
higher soundstage. You can store the DSO setting for each source.
Best Tuning Memory (BTM):
This feature selects stations with the strongest signals within the selected
band and stores them in order of their frequency.
Subwoofer Preamp Outputs:
The MEX-BT5000 has subwoofer outputs and a built-in
crossover. The low-pass filter
can be set to 78 Hz, 125 Hz, or Off (full range) and the subwoofer output level is adjustable.
Aux Lite Auxiliary Input: The
MEX-BT5000 has a UniLink input on the rear panel, consisting of the UniLink
control bus and RCA audio jacks. If you're not using the UniLink port for
another source (CD changer, satellite tuner, etc), this Aux Lite input allows you to directly
connect an auxiliary unit (portable MiniDisc, MP3 player, the audio
output from a mobile/portable DVD player, etc) to the receiver's stereo RCA input jacks.
Note: If a CD/MD
changer is connected to this receiver, you will not be able to connect
an auxiliary source without an adapter (158XA300).
Dimmer: This unit is equipped with a wire that
Sony calls an illumination lead, however, it acts as a dimmer lead.
When the dimmer mode is set to Auto and the illumination
lead receives power, the display dims to a preset level. The display brightness
is not affected by the vehicle's dimmer control. Also, the dimmer feature may be
turned off, so dimming does not take place when the illumination lead receives
power. You may choose to dim the display at all times by setting the dimmer mode
to On.
Note:
For this feature to work, the unit's illumination wire must be connected
to your vehicle's dash lights.
45-Degree Installation:
For flexibility of installation, this unit can be mounted between 0 (horizontal)
and 45 degrees.
Wired Remote
Compatibility: In addition to the
supplied wireless remote, the receiver can be controlled by an optional wired
rotary commander (item 158RMX4S). Once the wired remote is connected, you can
change the control direction of the remote, depending on where you choose to mount
it.
External Device Controls
Bluetooth:
The MEX-BT5000 has Bluetooth hardware built in to integrate with Bluetooth
enabled cellular phones and audio players, including the Apple iPhone. Bluetooth is a two-way wireless
communication system allowing you to make and receive cell phone calls, and
listen to a Bluetooth audio device.
Up to six phones and six audio devices can be registered with the MEX-BT5000.
It can be set to automatically
reconnect to the last connected Bluetooth device when the ignition is turned on. You can dial out using your phone book,
history of dialed numbers (last ten),
history of received calls (last ten), dial directly using the joystick or numeric keypad on the remote,
or program up to six numbers using the radio preset buttons. The phone rings,
and you hear the caller's voice through the front speakers (left, right, or
both). The microphone is built into the front of the radio. You can answer incoming calls manually or automatically.
These Bluetooth profiles are supported:
- A2DP:
Advanced Audio Distribution Profile
- AVRCP:
Audio Video Remote Control Profile
- HFP:
Hands Free Profile
- OPP:
Object Push Profile
Note: The Apple iPhone
supports Bluetooth hands free calling but does not support Bluetooth
wireless music audio streaming.
iPod Ready: You can connect an
iPod to this unit and control it via the front panel controls and remote. The
optional XA-110IP iPod Control Interface (item #158XA110IP) is required. The
158XA110IP iPod adapter can be connected to Sony XA-C40 multi-source adapter
(item number 158XAC40) along with a CD changer, but a 158XA110IP and 209SON110 XM adaptor
cannot be connected through a 158XAC40 multi-source adapter. If a 158XA110IP
and 209SON110 XM adaptor are connected through the 158XAC40 multi-source
adapter, only the iPod adaptor would be recognized.
Satellite Radio Ready: There
are several options for connecting an optional XM or SIRIUS Satellite Radio
receiver to this receiver:
HD Radio Ready: The MEX-BT5000
is compatible with Sony's optional XT-100HD add-on HD Tuner (sold separately)
through its UniLink Bus connection. HD Radio
technology, where available, offers higher quality sound than conventional
analog broadcasts and receives text data. HD Radio provides FM broadcasts that
are equal to CD sound quality and AM broadcasts that are as good as analog FM
stereo broadcasts. HD Radio also provides a variety of data, including station
name, song title, artist name, album name, etc. Once connected, all AM and FM
broadcasts are received by the XT-100HD. HD appears as an additional source,
with five preset banks; HD1 (FM1), HD2 (FM2), HD3 (FM3), HD4 (AM1), and HD5
(AM2). In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting it is
possible to choose from up to 8 multicast programs (HD1 to HD8 and analog).
There are also data programs for each program.
Changer Controls:
This unit is compatible with Sony UniLink CD/MP3 changers, MD changers,
satellite tuners, and other UniLink devices.
Multiple Changer
Control: You can control up to
seven UniLink devices with this head unit. When
connecting more than one outboard source to this receiver, you must use the Sony XA-C40
multi-source adapter (item number 158XAC40), up to three XA-C40s can be used.
When an XA-C40 is used with the MEX-BT5000, an XA-110IP iPod adapter (item 158XA110IP)
and XMDSON110 XM adaptor (item 209SON110) cannot be connected through the XA-C40 multi-source
adapter. If XA-110IP and XMDSON110 XM adaptors are connected through the XA-C40 multi-source
adapter, only the iPod adaptor will be recognized. With an XA-C40, you can
connect a CD changer and an iPod or XM adapter to this unit, but iPod and XM
adapters cannot be connected at the same time. The inability to recognize an XM
adapter when it's connected along with an iPod adapter is specific to the
MEX-BT5000; other Sony models will recognize both adapters.
Note
Display
Illumination/Clock Display:
Pressing the Off button once will turn off audio output, but the clock display
and face/button illumination remain on. This makes the clock display and
face/button illumination "Keyed" instead of "Unit On" only. To turn the unit off
completely, you must press the Off button for two seconds. When power is removed
from the switched power wire (the key is turned off), the display does turn off.
Note: When installing
in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you
must turn the radio completely off (this defeats keyed operation), or
you may wire the accessory power wire of this radio to an alternate
source of accessory power to retain keyed clock and face/button
illumination operation.
