Sony's MEX-M70BT marine CD receiver offers all the features you want in a new receiver, plus the water-resistant toughness you need in a piece of marine electronics. Built-in Bluetooth® and a handy front USB input give you plenty of ways to play your tunes, while the specialized circuit board coating and UV-resistant front panel ensure that this receiver will stand up to life on the water.
This marine-rated receiver features built-in Bluetooth 4.0 with Simple Secure Pairing, so you can take calls and listen to music (including your favorite Pandora channels) with minimal effort and maximum quality. NFC (Near Field Communication) technology means one-touch listening with compatible devices —simply align the devices, touch the NFC logo, and pair things up. It's a very handy feature to have on a boat.
Sony's App Remote gives you voice control for select smartphones, plus you can take advantage of one-touch voice activation for your iPhone® using Bluetooth. You can also plug your iPod®, iPhone, Android™ smartphone, or other compatible device into the two USB ports and play music while charging the device. Sony's Quick-BrowZer® feature lets you find your music by artist, album, genre, song or playlist. The detachable front display shows song title and artist info, then gives you caller ID info when you get a call.
The MEX-M70BT features a built-in Dynamic Reality Amp that's designed to produce plenty of power without noise or distortion. You can also customize the sound to suit your musical tastes using the built-in 10-band equalizer, selectable low- and high-pass crossovers, and other soundshaping tools. If you're planning on expanding your system in the future, you can use the full set of 5-volt RCA preamp outputs to send a strong, clean signal to your marine amps.
You'll also enjoy plenty of control options with the MEX-M70BT. The intuitive front panel is easy to learn, but when you're away from the receiver, you can use your smartphone or the included wireless remote. With Passenger Control for iPhone® and iPod® devices, your guests can play DJ while you're at the helm. This receiver also works with the SiriusXM tuner (not included), allowing you to enjoy satellite radio programming even when you're miles and miles offshore.
Installation notes: This marine radio is water-resistant, but we recommend mounting it in a water-resistant enclosure or using a cover for best performance.
iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.
Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.
Very pleased with the unit's power and the overall options are nice compared to my older Sony unit that came with my boat. I mainly purchased this unit because of the USB ports for older I-Pods and it works great.
Pros: Lot's of functionality - good sound
Cons: Would not work with my existing transom remote, but the wireless will work well (as long as I don't drop it in the water).
Had to splice into the old wires as my previous system was an older technology. Otherwise, installation was a snap. The radio looks great and sounds great. I installed it in my 1984 cruising sailboat. It handles my ipod and Sirius receiver with no problems at all. I also love the Bluetooth capability as it allows me to answer my cellphone without getting distracted when underway. Overall, I think this is a great system and a real value for the price.
Pros: Easy installation, lots of input options, great sound
Cons: Haven't found any yet.
Excellent deck, much better than the two previous units I had on my boat.
Pros: Easy install, easy set-up, great sound.
Bought this for an 05 Jeep Wrangler. Bluetooth works great and even at 65mph the hands free calling works great. It's holding up well. Plenty of outputs for amps( I'm running 2).
Pros: Bluetooth, marine grade, visibility is great in a jeep with the top down. both USB ports charge iPhone 6 and iPod. easy controls
Cons: Has a CD player
Outstanding Sony Upgrade. I chose the Sony M70BT as upgrade to an 10 year old factory installed Sony Unit in our boat. I am an audiophile and wanted the two USB ports to support various music devices. I am very impressed with this head unit. The sound quality upgrade is Huge!! Pairing with my iPhone6 took 5 seconds. The phone quality through the head unit is also very good. I found this unit way easier to use than the existing Sony unit. I went Sony to Sony hoping that I would not have to change the wiring harness but that was not the case. Installation was still a snap if you take you time and spice the wires color for color. I was concerned that my old Sony Remote that is permanently installed on the transom would not work with this unit and I was ready to install a new remote. Good News !! The existing 10 year old remote also works great! It has only been a few days but I could not be happier. Just placed a Crutchfield order today for a speaker upgrade. You will not be disappointed if you want the extra ports and the upgraded sound enhancements of this unit.
Pros: Great Sound, Easy to Use, Multiple Aux ports
I bought this unit to replace an older Sony head unit on my boat. I replaced the old one in order to add Bluetooth and built-in SiriusXM. The stereo works great and was easy to set up. I especially like the full power down feature. Because the unit has an internal memory built in for the settings, it can completely turn off the power coming to it. This is great feature on a boat. It allows me to leave my battery switched on and not worry about the stereo draining the battery.
Pros: Easy to to use, great power off feature, great sound
Cons: Different connector from my older Sony stereo on the back of the head unit made me have to cut and splice wires.
This review is identical to Reb from July 2014. We bought the radio soon after it was released and it did not work correctly. The FM tuner would not tune in half of the frequencies. After lots of back and forth with Crutchfield and Sony it was clear that the unit was defective and had to be replaced. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to install it for 4 months after purchasing it so the Crutchfield return was expired. But, the Sony warranty was still active, so this should have been an easy swap. Not so. Sony stalled and stalled and eventually sent me a "replacement" that wasn't even a marine radio. After a dozen more calls and a return of that radio, Sony finally admitted that the "Return Department" kept different inventory than their sales department and that they couldn't send me an identical replacement. At this point, Crutchfield offered to swap the unit despite their 60-day policy, but I had already sent the inoperable unit back to Sony. Sony finally refunded my purchase price, which I used to buy a replacement from Crutchfield. I rushed to install it in the boat last November just before it was covered for the winter and, thankfully, it work as promised this time. It is a very good unit and it replaced a 10-year-old Sony that lasted about as long as you could hope for in a marine environment. So, a word to the wise: Crutchfield defines excellent customer service and Sony is at the opposite end of the spectrum. So, install the radio as soon as you get it!
Pros: Excellent radio (unless it is initially defective) Great sound Lots of connection options
Cons: The connectors were not identical to the 10-year old model it replaced, forcing me to fish the wires through the panels again.
Installed this radio in a 2004 Jeep Wrangler, install was easy, radio works great in the Jeep, can see the read even in bright sun light.
Pros: Water proof and UV protected.
Cons: Did not have the option of a free install kit for the Jeep because this is a marine radio, so I did not order ever thing I needed, this was a pain because I had to go to two different stores twenty miles apart to get the right stuff.
I usually do not review products unless they are horrible. I read the review by the boater from Texas giving the unit a 1 star and had to respond. The unit works fanatically. The blue tooth is seamless and the sony app to control the unit makes it even easier. If you are having problems with the unit it is either a bad unit or your install skills are horrible. If you have a cabin that you are placing it in the remote will not work, its IR... IR doesn't go through walls, but the sony app on the iPhone pairs with it and that does. It's a great unit that sounds really nice. I paired it with 4 JL speakers and Alpines 45watt inline power amp booster. Sounds fantastic.
Pros: Blue tooth, Sony remote app, great price. Works with older CPS Products marine remotes, that was a huge bonus!
Cons: What do you expect for the price? Unless you are spending over a grand relax.... I love it when people expect perfection and want the absolute best/lowest rock bottom price. You get what you pay for.
Blue tooth is a nice feature but the face is very difficult to read while underway. Control with the iPhone app is easier.
Pros: Sounds good but the amp helps that. Bluetooth is cool. Mine was a replacement of an older Clarion so installation was easy.
Cons: The face is way too small to operate while underway.
Really like this head unit, tons of features and really well setup. Easy to install and very good instructions.
Pros: Easy to install Good Instructions Back USB
Cons: Would be nice to have a back AUX as well as the back USB to run remote cords Overpriced remotes
The receiver that came with the fairing that I ordered for a motorcycle was a Jensen Heavy Duty Marine. The CD on it would skip really bad and the radio didn't pick up stations well. I replaced it with the Sony Mex-M70BT Marine. It also came with a remote and a mic, the Jensen didn't. All round a much, much better reciever for my bike.
Pros: CD doesn't skip, picks up radio stations better, looks better, comes with mic and remote, and pushs a lot more power.
Cons: none yet
Great head unit with lots of features and EQ adjustability. Wish it didn't have CD. Who uses CD anymore? Seems more like an easy place for moisture to get in. I wish there was a BT or RF waterproof remote available.
Pros: Adjustability and features
Cons: CD Player No BT or RF waterproof remote available
Bought this unit with SiriusXM receiver and RMX60 remote commander. Included remote is IR, so useless in cabin installs where you want to control remotely. Also, if you're an iPhone user, the app to control it only works if you're connected to USB; thus useless if you want to move around on the boat. App is also buggy and hangs. Biggest joke of all (and final straw) was the RMX60 remote. After you cut the massive hole in your dash to install it, you'll find that only the control buttons work. The large LCD display which consumes the face doesn't work. Spent half an hour on phone with Sony support, only to be told that. Bluetooth connectivity was spotty when connecting/disconnecting, requiring multiple attempts to pair. The whole is on it's way back, buying Clarion M303...
Pros: Controls on face ok, sound is pretty good
Cons: Horrible iPhone integration Bad remote commander option flakey bluetooth connect
Installed in boat, Sounds good, many ways to connect to it
Pros: Bluetooth, front and rear USB, aux port, display is easy to see in sunshine.
Good radio for the price
Great Stereo, replaces a 2006 Sony in my Lund Fishing boat. I got one of the first ones out and the AM/FM did not work and I had to work with Sony on the return. They did not have a replacement (out of Stock) and are sending me a refund. Found several available at other dealers and ordered a replacement. Sony was a bit difficult to work with, but I liked the features so much over other available boat Stereos I stuck with this Sony. My 06 Sony was flawless in my Lund fishing boat. All in all a great stereo once I got the second one. I didn't buy at Crutchfield, but should have.
Pros: Many features, Bluetooth, USB (for thumbdrive) Simple to use and install, blends great with my Lund boat dash with the carbon fiber and red lighting, visible in sunlight, decent FM reception, sounds good with ample power. I like the remote, I put some velcro on the back and on the dash so it stays put. Like the backside USB for my flash drive (my whole music collection is on one 16gig flashdrive and never have to hook up any phone or ipod device).
Cons: Wish it had marine weather band. Don't need the CD, obsolete, slot for moisture to get into the unit.. No show stoppers, just my thoughts on what would make it better.
Very easy to install. It has taken a little time to figure out all the options but the satellite radio is awesome. Love the new radio. Using the radio on my boat.
Pros: Satellite radio Being about to add the sub and amp with no problems.
Cons: You can't get the artist and the name of the song while listening to satellite radio. You must pick either one but still love it over all.
Great stereo for my boat. Marine quality, with all the bells and whistles, Blue Tooth, USB, XM ready. Best of all it sounds fantastic on the water. I thought that I needed new rear speakers on the boat, all I needed was a new stereo. The system was replacing an older Sony, so the install was a snap and I was enjoying the new sound after 15 minutes behind the instrument panel. Highly recommend this receiver/cd system to fellow boaters looking for high quality at a very reasonable price. 4 channels at 50 watts provides plenty of power also.
Pros: Great sound, great price, plenty of power and tech ready.
Cons: None so far.
Fantastic sound. Love the wireless remote. Display is very visible even in bright sunlight. Will be adding an amp- mostly because this installation has me pumped, not because the receiver needs any umph.
Pros: Bluetooth, Pandora, and direct USB attach to my iPod and iPhone. And satellite ready! Couldn't ask for anything else.
Cons: The upgrade was not as plug-n-play as I wanted- had to splice the receiver wires to my existing harness, but then again my old OEM receiver was 10 years old (and not Sony). Shouldn't complain over the extra 30 minutes this took.
Absolutely phenomenal system... Installed in my jeep for off-roading pleasures during any weather!!! Holds up strong to rain with no issues, all the commodities of a normal modern day vehicle with Bluetooth app features and ease of use!!!
Pros: Bluetooth, simple easy quick install, mountable remote access, plays all of my music through any of my apps on my iPhone all around a great system for off-road and waterborne situations!!!
Cons: The phone sync is sketchy at times just have to give it a little bit of time every once in a while... But other than that none!!!

You can choose to control the your iPod/iPhone from the head unit (Head Unit Control Mode) or from the Apple device's clickwheel/touchscreen (Passenger App Control).
Note: While connected and the ignition switch is set to ACC or ON, the head unit's USB connection will power and charge your iPod/iPhone (not iPad). If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then this unit will not recognize it.

In addition, you can select the phase of the subwoofer output from Normal or Reverse.
Note: You can connect a subwoofer to this head unit without the need of a separate power amplifier. Simply connect a single subwoofer (4-8 ohm) directly to head unit's left or right rear speaker leads (but not both). Same subwoofer controls apply.

You can operate basic functionality of compatible audio apps directly from the receiver (operation differs depending on the app). Movie and navigation apps will continue to be controlled from your smartphone. In addition, you can control the receiver's sources directly from the application on your smartphone using simple finger gestures and see detailed source information on the phone's touchscreen.

Can't remember, I haven't had the unit in a while. I have an Alpine now and it plays anything that is on the flash drive. [ ROBERT Oct 09, 2015 ]
I have had three Marine Sony units over the past 6 years and the remotes that come with the units all work on this one. This one also included a remote. I also added the Sony hardwired remote in the helm console. Both work great [ ROB Jul 31, 2015 ]
My unit came with a factory wireless remote, which works phenomenally well. I have not tried adding another remote. [ Darin Jul 31, 2015 ]
No. If you disable the bluetooth phone option it disables all bluetooth. You will then have to connect your phone to either the auxilary port or the usb. I recommend using the usb because it will charge your phone while you are listening to your playlist and it will show song details on the radios display. [ JOSEPH E May 28, 2015 ]
I have a 5 [ BRIAN D May 27, 2015 ]
Yes [ ROBERT May 27, 2015 ]
Sorry, I haven't tried to do that. The USB connections give better sound so we have stayed with them. [ William May 27, 2015 ]
I don't think so, it still tries to pick up incoming calls when using BT. [ R HEATH May 27, 2015 ]

I have an iPhone 6 and it works great, I play Bluetooth music and answer calls flawlessly [ ROBERT May 27, 2015 ]
Yes it does. And the bluetooth on 6 is improved so it works very well. [ William May 27, 2015 ]
Yes, have iPhone 6, works great! [ R HEATH May 27, 2015 ]
Yes, it's a regular Bluetooth pairing connection. We've connected multiple brands of phones, even my laptop. From what I can tell, if your device can connect via bluetooth, this unit will pair up just fine. Follow the directions in the manual so a permanent pairing code is generated for your device, otherwise you have to manually connect it every time. It's simple, just follow Sony's directions! Enjoy! I purchased and installed the Sony MEX-M70BT in my Cobalt 246 boat. The existing wired Remote Commander (SONY/Access Technologies RC-1B) plugged in without any issues using the existing connections. All functions on the Remote Commander seem to work as intended with this new Sony CD/Receiver! [ Cobalt246 Jun 13, 2015 ]
I had the exact same situation on my boat. The remote commander will control everything, but the display on the remote commander does not operate. For us, that was OK because we usually only use it for volume anyway and I couldn't find a remote commander that was designed specifically for this unit...not sure why Sony didn't catch that! You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you. [ Krissy May 27, 2015 ] Staff
Yes it will. You will also be able to listen to songs downloaded to your phone while it is charging. [ JOSEPH E Mar 05, 2015 ]
Yes this unit will charge your devices [ Terry Mar 03, 2015 ]
Yes, it does on my same model number. [ LOUIS P Mar 02, 2015 ]
Have not tried that so im not sure. [ BROCK Mar 02, 2015 ]

Simple Pairing: With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Sony MEX-M70BT without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. You can register up to nine Bluetooth enabled devices with the Sony head unit and keep two devices connected at all times (only one can be used at a time). Once paired, the MEX-M70BT will automatically re-connect to your device when in close proximity. The head unit also offers unique pairing for Android and iPhone smartphone to make Bluetooth pairing even easier. Near Field Communication (for Android): Android (OS 4.0+) smartphones that have Near Field Communication (NFC) pair simply by touching the Android device's NFC tag to the head unit's NFC tag on it rotary-knob. For older Android smartphones with OS 4.0 or lower, download the NFC Easy Connect app from Google Play to use the head unit's NFC pairing function. USB Pairing (for iPhone): You can pair your Apple iPhone (iOS 5.0+) by simply connecting it to the Sony head unit via USB and activating the Bluetooth function on your Apple device.
