Smartphone interactivity, Sony style

Sony's understands that your smartphone is a big part of your life, so the MEX-N5000BT CD receiver offers plenty of ways to use it with in your car audio system. Sony's App Remote feature lets you take charge of selecting sources, picking radio stations, and launching apps from your phone's touchscreen, while on the other side you can select apps using the stereo's source button, the same way you'd choose the CD player or radio as your source. Best of all, App Remote lets your phone work as a display for the receiver, so you can see album art, track info, caller information, and more on your phone, rather than reading it off the receiver's single line display.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Sony MEX-N5000BT is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (version 3.1), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.6 (Hands Free Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.3 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.5 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Sony MEX-N5000BT. Please visit Sony eSupport for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

Simple Pairing: With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Sony MEX-N5000BT without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. You can register up to nine Bluetooth enabled devices with the Sony head unit and keep two devices connected at all times (only one can be used at a time). Once paired, the MEX-N5000BT will automatically re-connect to your device when in close proximity. The head unit also offers unique pairing for Android and iPhone smartphone to make Bluetooth pairing even easier.

    • Near Field Communication (for Android): Android (OS 4.0+) smartphones that have Near Field Communication (NFC) pair simply by touching the Android device's NFC tag to the head unit's NFC tag on it rotary-knob. For older Android smartphones with OS 4.0 or lower, download the NFC Easy Connect app from Google Play to use the head unit's NFC pairing function.
    • USB Pairing (for iPhone): You can pair your Apple iPhone (iOS 5.0+) by simply connecting it to the Sony head unit via USB and activating the Bluetooth function on your Apple device.

Hands-Free Communication w/ External Mic: The Sony MEX-N5000BT supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled cell-phone (such as your iPhone or Android smartphone). Bluetooth hands-free communication helps to minimize distraction while driving by allowing you to control your mobile phone from the head unit, so you don't have to touch your mobile phone. The controls of the MEX-N5000BT can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also features an external microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

    • Answering Calls: Incoming calls can be answered manually or automatically (between 3-10 seconds) through the Sony head unit, while the ring tone is output from your car speakers and the caller's name or phone number is displayed on the head unit's LCD. Incoming calls can also be rejected if desired.
    • Dialing a Number: Using the MEX-N5000BT, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways.
      • Entering Phone #: Allows you to manually dial a phone number using the unit's control dial.
      • Preset Dial: You can store up to 6 contacts in the preset dial for quick dialing.
      • Phone Book: You can store up to 1,000 contacts in the unit's phone book. Up to a 40 character name can be input for each contact.
      • Call History: The unit will store the last 20 calls, allowing you to select a previous phone number quickly from the list.
      • Voice Dial: You can make a call using the voice tags stored on your connected cellular phone.
      • Redial: Use to easily redial the last number you called.
Note: The external wired microphone offers improved audio quality versus an integrated microphone, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise. You can adjust the level of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 11' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone comes with a mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash. The external microphone measures 0.525" (diameter) x 1.515" (depth).

Wireless Audio Streaming (w/ Advanced Music Navigation): The Sony MEX-N5000BT can stream stored music and music apps from your Bluetooth A2DP/AVRCP mobile device (such as your iPhone or Android smartphone). In addition to basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip, Random/Repeat) for both stored music and music apps, the MEX-N5000BT provides a Search List of your stored music by Category or Playlist (AVRCP 1.4 phones only; which includes Android 4.0+ and iPhone 5.0+). The head unit will also display device's stored music and music app song information; such as Artist name & Song/Album title.

Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Eyes Free Control: When paired and connected to an iPhone with Siri via Bluetooth (not USB), the Sony MEX-N5000BT has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel control and external microphone. Simply activate the "voice dial" function on the MEX-N5000BT to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the head unit and its microphone. The head unit will only display hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the MEX-N5000BT ; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

Note: You can ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone with Siri. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.
    Disc & USB Playback

Disc Compatibility: The unit features a single disc player that will playback CD-Audio and finalized CD-R/CD-RW audio discs. The unit supports the playback of MP3/WMA music files on a CD-R or CD-RW disc.

    iPod/Aux Integration

iPod/iPhone Audio Playback w/ DAC Bypass: The MEX-N5000BT's front-panel USB port allows you to connect your iPod/iPhone via the iPod dock or Lightning connector-to-USB cable that comes with your iPod or iPhone (not included with the head unit). This USB 1-Wire for iPod/iPhone connection lets you directly connect, charge, & control select iPod/iPhones via the USB jack on the front of the unit, as well as view metadata like song title & artist name on the front display. The USB connection bypasses the iPod/iPhone's DAC and uses the head unit's 24-bit DAC to maximize sound quality. You can choose to control the your iPod/iPhone from the head unit (Head Unit Control Mode) or from the Apple device's clickwheel/touchscreen (Passenger App Control).

    • Head Unit Control + Song/Artist Info: The MEX-N5000BT's Quick-BrowZer feature allows you to browse your iPod/iPhone's music library by Artist, Album, Song, Genre, Playlist, or Podcast from the head unit's front-panel control; content in each category will be listed alphabetically. The unit also offers basic playback controls; such as Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Rewind, Previous/Next Track, and Repeat/Random. During Head Unit Control mode, the MEX-N5000BT will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information; including track #, elapsed playing time, song title, artist name, and album label. Newer Apple devices with iOS 6.0+ allow you to continue to use your Apple device's touchscreen to navigate your stored music and access music apps; older iPod/iPhone devices will be locked during connection.
    • Passenger App Control: In Passenger App Control mode, you can navigate the stored music on your iPod/iPhone device through its clickwheel or touchscreen; as well as music apps on an iPhone (iOS 3.0+). Basic playback functions, such as Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track are still available from the head unit. The Passenger App Control mode does not offer song/artist information display. Not all apps will be compatible with this mode.
Note: While connected and the ignition switch is set to ACC or ON, the head unit's USB connection will power and charge your iPod/iPhone (not iPad). If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then this unit will not recognize it.

Dynamic Reality Amp: The redesigned, internal Dynamic Reality Amp circuitry boasts 47% lower internal resistance compared to conventional in-dash receiver, delivering 55 watts x 4 channels of Peak power to your vehicle's speakers. This allows you to crank up the volume while maintaining low distortion, low noise levels, and smooth frequency response. The power output specs for the MEX-N5000BT are as follows:

    • Continuous Power Output: 17 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)

Note: The power specifications for the Sony MEX-N5000BT are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers.

6ch/2V Preamp Outputs + Sub Control: The Sony MEX-N5000BT is equipped with 2-volt Front, Rear, & Sub pre-amp outputs giving you the ability to connect external amplifiers to your car stereo system. Advanced Sound Engine contains the following features: EQ10, ClearAudio+, Listening Position, Rear Bass Enhancer (RBE), Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE), Advanced Auto Volume (AAV), and Loudness.

    • EQ10 w/ ClearAudio+: R&B, Rock, Pop, Dance, Hip-Hop, Electronic, Jazz, Soul, Country, Custom, or Off (Flat). The Custom mode allows you to make your own equalizer settings. You can adjust the level (+/-6dB) of 10 different frequency bands - Band1 (32Hz), Band2 (63Hz), Band3 (125Hz), Band4 (250Hz), Band5 (500Hz), Band6 (1khz), Band7 (2khz), Band8 (4kHz), Band9 (8kHz), and Band10 (16kHz).
    • Listening Position: This unit can change the localization of sound by delaying the sound output from each speaker to suit your position, and simulate a natural sound field with the feeling of being in the center of it wherever you sit in the car. You can choose from Front Right, Front Left, Front Center, or Off. You can also set the subwoofer distance of the subwoofer to Near, Normal, or Far
    • Rear Bass Enhancer (RBE): RBE enhances the bass sound by applying the low-pass filter setting to the rear speakers. This function allows the rear speakers to work as a subwoofer even if there is no subwoofer connected.
    • Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE): DSEE improves digitally compressed music files by restoring high frequencies lost in the compression process.
    • Advanced Auto Volume (AAV) + Loudness: This feature adjusts the playback volume level of all playback sources to the optimum level. Loudness reinforces bass and treble for clear sound at low volume levels.

Beep Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Display Features

Detachable Face w/ Caution Alarm: The Sony MEX-N5000BT features a detachable face for theft prevention. If you turn the ignition switch to the Off position without detaching the head unit's front-panel, the caution alarm will sound for a few seconds. The alarm will only sound if the unit's built-in amplifier is used. No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Dynamic Color Illuminator (35,000 colors): Dynamic Color Illuminator lets you match the head unit's LCD & button illumination to complement your existing vehicle lighting components. With selectable Sound Synchronization, the timing of the color change is synchronized with the audio source. You can select from 12 preset colors (red/amber/m-amber/yellow/white/light green/green/light blue/sky blue/blue/purple/pink), customized color (R-G-B), & 5 preset patterns (rainbow/ocean/sunset/forest/random). The unit's Dynamic Color Illuminator offers the following advance features.

    • Day/Night Color Mode: You can register a customize color for the unit's display and buttons for day & night time driving.
    • Sound Synchronization: The color changes according to synchronization of playing music. When you select a preset pattern sound synchronization becomes effective.
    • White Menu: You can display the menu more clearly (White text) without concern for the unit's other color settings.
    • Start White: When you power-on the head unit, the color of the unit's display and buttons turn white and then the color changes to your chosen customize color. You can enjoy this effect whenever the source is turned on.
Note: To change the brightness of the display you can set the MEX-N5000BT to one of three dimmer modes; Dimmer Auto (dims the display automatically when you turn your vehicle's lights on), Dimmer Off (deactivates the dimmer), and Dimmer On (display always dim).

Auto Scroll: The Auto Scroll feature allows long displayed items to scroll automatically across the display when the track is changed on a disc.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: Pressing the Source/Off button once will switch sources. Pressing and holding the Source/Off button for one second will turn off audio output, but the clock display and button illumination remain on. To turn the unit off completely, you must press and hold the Source/Off button for two seconds.

Auto Off: When installing in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you can set the unit to turn off all lighting a set amount of time after you turn the power off. The Auto Off feature can be set to 30 seconds, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, or No.

Demo Mode: The head unit's demo mode can be turned On or Off.

    Remote Control

App Remote Technology: Sony's App Remote Technology offers two-way communication between the Sony MEX-N5000BT and your USB-connected iPhone (iOS 5+) or Bluetooth-paired Android smartphone (2.1-2.3 Froyo/Gingerbread, Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0-4.2). You will need to download the free Sony App Remote application from the Apple App Store or the Google Play App Store. This application integrates compatible Apple iOS and Android apps into the selectable source list of the Sony CD receiver and lets you launch apps from the head unit. You can operate basic functionality of compatible audio apps directly from the receiver (operation differs depending on the app). Movie and navigation apps will continue to be controlled from your smartphone. In addition, you can control the receiver's sources directly from the application on your smartphone using simple finger gestures and see detailed source information on the phone's touchscreen.

    • Receiver Sources: The App Remote lets you access the head unit's Tuner (AM/FM), CD, iPhone, Bluetooth, and Aux sources from your phone's touchscreen. You can use finger gestures to tap, flick left/right, or flick up/down on the phone's touchscreen in order to change AM/FM Band, Play/Pause a track, Seek Up/Down a track or station, select a Preset, or access an Album. You will also be able to see song/artist information from MP3/WMA and smartphone sources, as well as station identification numbers from AM/FM radio.
    • Compatible Apps (as of 2/19/2014): The App Remote also provides various music, movie, and navigation apps which can be accesses from the Sony MEX-N5000BT's source list. Available operation differs depending on the application.
      • Music Apps: Music apps include; Pandora, AUPEO!, iHeartRadio, MOG, and TuneIn. The head unit only provides basic Play/Pause functions and no song/artist information for these music apps.
      • Movie Apps: Movie apps include Netflix and YouTube. Video will be displayed on your smartphone's screen, while the audio plays through your vehicle's speakers. You can control Play/Pause from the MEX-N5000BT. Other playback functions will need to done on your smartphone. Subscription may be required. You should not watch videos while your vehicle is in motion.
      • Navigation Apps: Supported navigation apps include Apple Maps, Google Maps, Waze, and MotionX GPS Drive. The map screen will display on your smartphone's touchscreen, while audible directions can be heard through your vehicle's speakers. You can continue to listen to music streamed from your smartphone while navigating; the unit will attenuate your music during a navigation voice-prompt. Control of the navigation apps will still be done through your smartphone's touchscreen. Fees may apply for some navigation apps & functions.
    • Voice Communication + Notification Readout (Android only): Exclusive to Android devices, App Remote technology for the MEX-N5000BT head unit adds a voice user interface for voice control of apps and functions such as navigation and music playback, notification readouts including RSS feeds, Twitter, and text message reply. Through voice operation, you can safely and comfortably operate your smartphone in the car from the Sony MEX-N5000BT CD receiver. Incoming SMS/E-mail and Twitter/Facebook/Calendar notifications are automatically read aloud through the MEX-N5000BT and your vehicle's speakers to keep you in touch.
    • Custom Sound Settings: From your Android smartphone remote screen, you get access to audio & DSP settings (Equalizer, Volume Control, Fader/Balance/Subwoofer, and Listening Position).
Note: Access to the music, movie, and navigation apps will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

Wireless Remote Control: The head unit comes supplied with an IR wireless remote control (RM-X231) for easy operation. The included wireless remote allows you to control the basic functions (not Bluetooth) of the Sony head unit while keeping your eyes on the road.

    Q
Can this stereo display one color in the daytime (lights off) and a different color at night (lights on)? And if so, how? I'd like to set the daytime color to white and the night time color to match my dash lights. I saw a day/night mode under display settings but I'm not sure how it works and the manual was not helpful.

From what I've found day/night is only good for brightness and it usually knows if you have your dash lights on if you set it to auto but as far as different colors for day/night I don't think there's a way
    barrett  Feb 25, 2015
    A
I am thinking a wire for dash lights would be needing to be connected. Then drill the setting for the color. Personally I have not done this. But, the unit would have to know when to change from day to night lighting.

I've had a lot of problems with this stereo randomly shuttng off and resetting. So the lights reset all the time and are hard to read anyway, especially in the sun. To answer your question, I think you can only manually set the light color. I would look elsewhere either way.

Through menu and settings. It has a lots of options and can change many times automatically for example. I think it changes color relevant to music pitch/frequency. I set mine to match my speedometer color. I like the radio and worth the buy.

press the menu button until is says display, scroll through the display options till you get to colors or custom colors, it will then prompt you through the rest. when finished use the back arrow to exit in order to save your settings. I hope this helps!

I am an Android user, specifically an HTC ONE M7. People have asked if streaming app control, such as Pandora or Spotify, work with their Android phones via bluetooth, to which the answer was yes. What I want to know, is can I control Pandora on my Android phone with the stereo via USB tether? Or is that feature relegated to the higher models?

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: This receiver will not allow Pandora to play through the USB using an Android phone. You will either need to use Bluetooth which will let you control it from the radio or your phone, or you can use an auxiliary input which would have to be controlled from the phone. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

To use SIRI you will need to press the phone home button. SIRI will come over the speakers and use the microphone. If the phone is unlocked pressing the call button on the radio sometimes initiates SIRI but I had better luck initiating from the phone.

Hello, I have this head unit in my Chevy malibu-I myself have a galaxy s3 and it works fine. Switching between synced sources can be a little confusing(unit remembers up to 6 BT devices-1 primary which will have control over apps and will be the phone interfaced with unit where as the other sources are selectable thru BT menu). I have had a friend sync his s 5 to the car it also worked well-i only mention he source selection b/c at first I was lost and had to resync my phone after someone else added one. now I know I just have to reelect the proper paired source. Aside from compatibility(which I haven't found a non-syncing one yet), I have to say the head unit is all around good, many display options, good sound, I'm completely happy. I have the unit pushing kicker 400/4, 800/1, ks 6.2(x4), with an L7 12"-I dont use the head unit equalizers b/c they defeat the amp equalizers and cause a little clipping at high volumes. Hope this was helpful.

So I installed this radio about six months ago, and when I start my car (2007 jeep liberty) the radio is immediately locked. I could still connect to Bluetooth if it was left on bt audio but I will not be to change volume. All buttons are locked. This could last from 30 seconds to 2 hours. Called Sony was told I purchased a lemon. Today I installed same radio brand new, same problem! ! Anyone know what the heck is going on? Ooh and I can't use the app remote during it being locked.

    Q
If you connect an iPhone via USB, will the radio (or the remote) be able to go to the next or previous songs? If so, will it work with only the stock Music app or will it work with any music app (like Pandora or Spotify)?
    randy  Dec 16, 2014

I havent linked the iPhone via USB rather i link it up via bluetooth. I can't comment on how the skip button works for the music app or Pandora, but i frequently use Spotify and i am able to skip to the next song directy on the radio itself. So i am asuming that if you have the iPhone bluetooth linked and pluged into the USB (to charge the iPhone) it will do the same for Music App or Pandora. I cannot comment on the use of the remote, primary because I have a small car and very close to the radio and have no use to use the remote.
    russell  Dec 29, 2014
    A
Yes you can use the skip buttons on the radio or the remote to skip songs on iPhone. This works for stock app, iTunes Radio, pandora, slacker and google music that I've tried. For pandora you're supposed to even be able to use buttons on the radio to "like" songs. I'm a primary Slacker user and you can't "like" through the radio there but everything else works perfect.

If you have bluetooth turned on, it should automatically connect after a minute or so of turning on, regardless of the case. Perhaps you're looking for NFC connectivity. Check the setting for NFC on your phone and also check out an app for the Sony unit called NFC quick connect or easy connect or something like that. If all that fails contact Sony customer support.

You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.

Not exactly sure which connection is messed up or if I'm missing something. Any help? I am replacing an older model without bluetooth. Hello, I had the same trouble the 1st time I paired my wife's phone to the unit. The Head unit seems to want to stay fully connected to the last device it was interfaced with. I don't recall exactly how I overcame the issue but I believe that if you look at the Bluetooth settings on the phone it will show the available connection but not be automatically connected-i think that's how I got it to resync to my phone it was only an issue once(its been a few months-im sorry I don't recall exactly), and if its not re-paired thru the phone settings then it may have been the app that helped solve the issue.

The Demo mode should be able to be canceled by following a few steps. I have copied the manual's guide to this adjustment below. It is also available on page 17. I hope this helps. Settings Canceling the DEMO Mode You can cancel the demonstration display which appears while this unit is turned off. 1 Press MENU, rotate the control dial to select [DISPLAY], then press it. 2 Rotate the control dial to select [DEMO], then press it. 3 Rotate the control dial to select [DEMOOFF], then press it. In my opinion the volume control on this unit is very responsive. Although the control knob is used to control various other functions, it is prioritized to the volume unless another function is chosen through the menu. I have found that the control knob is, in fact, so responsive that when rapidly turning the controls and adjusting the volume from one extreme to another, the actual audio will adjust faster than the display. This does occur only when going very rapidly from one extreme to another; otherwise, no delay, no annoying beep, just great control.

i, I've had the unit for about 3 weeks nnow so I'm still figuring it out myself but so far I've been able to pair 2 devices at the same time and then play audio from each. I have a galaxy s3, my wife has a s4,(both paired). And my friend paired an older smartphone(unsure model) he jumped in and paired his just for a few songs but it played fine-my phone was still paired and I retook control using the head units ap thru the phone. Im still figuring it out myself and have the unit in my daily driver so I haven't sat and played around yet. The manual says that the unit will prioritize to last connected smartphone, also says if you have smartphone with android OS 4.0 or lower you will need an app to connect using NFC. "Note: while streaming Bluetooth audio, you cannot connect from the unit to the cellular phone. Connect from the cellular phone to this unit instead". The best I can answer is yes-but I wouldn't hinge purchase on my statement without first calling Sony to check compatibility with your phone itself. I highly recommend the unit I have similar Sony unit in my truck that I love . Hope I was helpful. 98' Chevy Malibu Sony mex-n500bt Kicker ks 6.2. (2) Kicker kx 400.4 Kx 800.1 12" L7. 4ohm.

Does the Bluetooth Calling feature mute/lower the music volume to hear the call over the speakers? And how long is the microphone cord?

    timothy  Apr 30, 2014
    A
It pauses the current mode and switches to phone mode. For instance, while listening to a podcast from my phone, it suddenly stopped and the phone rang on the speakers. I pressed the phone button and answered the call. When the caller hung up, my podcast resumed. The microphone cord is maybe 5 feet long? It was plenty for me to route underneath my dash, up the left front window post, and mount on the visor in front of my forehead. I had several extra feet then which i stored behind the radio.

Yes, the system mutes the radio, and pauses if I am streaming from my android phone. Call comes thru over the speakers as long as BT is connected. Hello Andre, I recently purchased the Sony MEX-N5000BT and love it! Yes, the calling feature does lower the music and a chime alerts you to an incoming call. You can then choose to answer the call or not. You are also able to see the phone number and the name of the caller if they are in your phone's phone book. It works very well. The microphone cable is 11 feet in length allowing you to position it virtually anywhere. I have mine on the steering column just in front of the dash cluster. I hope this has been helpful.
    wesley t.  Apr 27, 2014

It mutes the music when you get a call and it automatically starts playing again when it ends. The cord is pretty long, I don't know how long but I ran it from the radio to my wheel and had a ton of extra cord left over!
    nicholas  Apr 27, 2014

Blue tooth has the priority over the other sounds and mutes anything else. As for the mic cord length, all, I can say it was long enough to go from the center of the dash to the center of the steering column. Hope this helps, Rod

It turns the radio off when you use the phone. I don't know how long the microphone cord is but I was able to run it from the radio, through the dash, up the side molding and to the drivers side visor to clip. I still had cord left over.

The Bluetooth pair easily and works for BT talk, voice, and media system including listing music and movie sound system. I didn't try with Pandora yet because I don't listen to Pandora that much. I use USB with my Ipod. The sony cd player control and charge the Ipod at the same time, seek songs and album. I am still learning to do the setup and adjust the setting. It got so much selection to do for this unit. Beside the price is not too bad. It is cheaper price compare 20 years ago for a CD player without BT.

Can you read the display during the daytime in sunlight?
    chris  Apr 10, 2014

It is a bit hard to read in bright sun with polarized sunglasses. Setting the display to white does help. If you like the colors, you can have the other lights remain a different color (or cycle throughout them) while leaving the display text white.

This is in my wife's car and she hasn't complained. I personally haven't driven it yet in the daytime. Make sure it isn't programmed for Dimming Mode all of the time. Or maybe try a different color display good luck.
    david  Apr 10, 2014

Yes, however some adjustments you can make to the display are not as bright as others. I chose a display color combination that works best for my car.

Yes you can. The radio has a good amount of different colors and also has a dimmer. I have the dimmer on and can still see it very well.

The display is ok in direct sunlight if set to white. Some colors are hard to read in sunlight. The dimmer isn't working with the car (I haven't set up yet) so I expect that to make a difference. Great sound though and easy to pair with phone.

How do you set the clock to display constantly while listening to the radio?

Hold in the menu button until the time comes up and that will display the time while music is playing. Also if you have the remote us the display button on the remote. It is one of the small round buttons.

Hold the Menu button for a few seconds and you will hear a beep and the display will change. It changes between showing all of the station name data to showing the station number and time.

I do not have pandora but my buddy does and he connected his to mine and it worked just great it also reads your text messages and lets you reply to it over voice and even lets you say call back and it will call the text sender this system does everything I wanted it for everything it says it will do and I think they actually are understating what it can and does do the app program you can get from the app store sony made for the android phones is great it wont load to my windows phone :( but all the features still work i just have to set the system to blutooth phone and anything my phone is doing can be heard or read from this unit I plan on buying couple more for my other vehicles the Alpine I bought previous to this unit said it would do all this but nothing worked and the sony is the only system out there that handles text messaging also and it will do true hands free and also lets you interfere manually awsome system for the money and it doesnt skimp on the sound either and it looks great also being able to change the colors for night and. day seperate from each other and dimmers matches my dash and interior lights perfectly

Yes just today for the first time. I had previously set up BT for my phone and wanted to use the Pandora feature. As I was playing Pandora through my android phone I selected the BT Audio function and it came through bright and clear. I have not used the Pandora specific function as I do not have the latest Pandora App as suggested.

Hey Chris, I have had pretty solid results with Pandora on my Samsung Galaxy S4, but I can't speak to any other apps. With Pandora in specific, I know that controls are natively built into the deck, so you can skip, thumbs up/down, all from the stereo or remote. Hope that helps!
    sawyer  Apr 04, 2014
    A
Yes, it works. If you're using Pandora, there is a dedicated Pandora option that allows you to skip or thumbs up/down songs but prevents you from being able to change stations. The regular bluetooth connection with the Sony 'App Remote' app will allow you take calls on your phone and streams all of your audio into your car's stereo system without issue. I have yet to get the USB connection to do anything with my Android device other than charge it.
    morgan  Apr 04, 2014

Yes, the radio has a bluetooth phone connection which supports music listening and talking. The easiest way to connect the phone is to download the AppRemote application to your phone and then press the volume button for two seconds (while bluetooth is enabled on your phone) and it will automatically connect and pull up the AppRemote app on your phone. Once connected, you can play spotify, slacker, soundcloud, pandora, and any other music app you have on your phone. You can also adjust the equalizer settings and speaker balance through your phone. You can connect without AppRemote using NFC or manually connecting bluetooth but it seems to be a bit more annoying than simply using AppRemote based on my experience.
    michael  Apr 04, 2014
    A
There's a selection in the input list for Pandora, and it only works on Android, not iOS. No Slacker or Spotify. Although you *might* be able to use them with the App Remote wirelessly. Unfortunately, Sony doesn't have a published list of compatible apps, so I can't say for sure.

I'm using this radio with a HTC ONE and Pandora streams well to it. You can change the Pandora channels with the Sony app. It also works with my son's iPhone 5c. I'm really liking this radio for the price.

I stream through mine on a regular basis using the Play Music app. I know it has a special menu for Pandora as well. Anything you can play over Bluetooth should work fine. Word of caution, don't get too excited over the app, it does a few things well (like sound settings) but most of the functions are handled better by Android by itself.
    jacob  Apr 04, 2014
    A
Yes.. just download sony app remote on your device and add the apps to it as a source. Menu > settings > Add Apps. That will allow you to select the apps via the physical radio buttons or the phone.

I have this system in a 97 vr6 jetta with very lowered suspension aso i have to run it fairly tight I have not had any skip issues with my unit yet and where i live i have to drive on the worst streets in america half the time but if you were to experience this the best way to use any systemanymore is to load all your music ontoo a usb stick and stop taking your cd's out in the heat and dirt and you will always have your masters safe at home clean.

I have not had this happen yet under normal driving, but I suppose any of them would skip under very bad road conditions, such as large pot holes, which this winter has amply provided in most of the country, in short I am very pleased with unit so far, "k,nock on wood"

I'm in NJ and we have a lot of pot holes from the winter. I've had this unit for roughly a month now. I have not experienced any skipping yet even while hitting some massive bumps. I have only used commercial cds in perfect condition though, so burnt disks or scratched disks may be a different story.

I have a Droid Maxx. I am still in the experimental stages, but so far so good. I have to be honest, the blue tooth phone features takes alittle getting used to. I am going to practice on it this weekend since the weather is going to be nice. I think it is more a Google talk issue than the radio. Androids use Google talk for their calls and messaging. I liked the Verizon platform for phone calls so much better. I will check in next week if you like and see if I made progress.

Can you explain what features did not work? I am using my MotoX with the N500BT and everything seems to work fine. Take into consideration that since you have a Galaxy S4 it might be trying to use the S-Voice which might not work with bluetooth. The touchless controls for the MotoX by default never work on a bluetooth device, not sure if the same exists with the Galaxy. Also did you try to use the Sony Application to accompany the headunit from the Play Store?
