Our take on the Sony MEX-N5000BT

by Ken Nail
Sony

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Smartphone interactivity, Sony style

Sony's understands that your smartphone is a big part of your life, so the MEX-N5000BT CD receiver offers plenty of ways to use it with in your car audio system. Sony's App Remote feature lets you take charge of selecting sources, picking radio stations, and launching apps from your phone's touchscreen, while on the other side you can select apps using the stereo's source button, the same way you'd choose the CD player or radio as your source. Best of all, App Remote lets your phone work as a display for the receiver, so you can see album art, track info, caller information, and more on your phone, rather than reading it off the receiver's single line display.

Connect to compatible iPhones® through Bluetooth® and you can activate voice commands and inquiries from the receiver. Speak your commands and you'll hear your iPhone response through your car audio speakers. And this receiver will notify you of any incoming text messages, so you can keep your eyes on the road.

Bluetooth that's easy to use

The MEX-N5000BT's built-in Bluetooth adds a new level of convenience and capability to your car. You can pair up your mobile phone and talk hands-free when you get a call, plus you can stream the music stored on your mobile device wirelessly to this Sony receiver. Pairing is easy with Sony's Simple Secure Pairing system, and if your phone supports NFC, you can simply touch it to the receiver to pair the device.

Sony MEX-N5000BT CD Receiver

With over 35,00 colors available, you're sure to find the right hue for your dash.

The center of a great car audio system

The MEX-N5000BT includes Sony's impressive Advanced Sound Engine, featuring a 10-band EQ, digital time alignment to set up a perfect stereo "sweet spot," and frequency filters to make your speaker setup shine. Sony's powerful Digital Reality amp is noted for its solid sound output and realistic audio reproduction. If you're looking to expand your system with external amps, you'll find three sets of preamp outputs.

You've got great musical options too. Check out your latest CD, or browse your favorite Pandora® Internet radio stations from the receiver's controls. You can plug your iPhone® or iPod® into the USB input — Sony's Quick-BrowZer® makes it easy to search for songs by artist, album, song, genre, or playlist. And you can add on a SiriusXM tuner (subscription required), if you want to experience an unparalleled variety of news, talk, sports, and music. Even cooler, you can choose from over 35,000 colors to make this receiver look right at home in your dash.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Sony stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the receiver, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Note: Bluetooth compatibility of this device may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Sony MEX-N5000BT is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (version 3.1), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.6 (Hands Free Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.3 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.5 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Sony MEX-N5000BT. Please visit Sony eSupport for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

Simple Pairing: With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Sony MEX-N5000BT without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. You can register up to nine Bluetooth enabled devices with the Sony head unit and keep two devices connected at all times (only one can be used at a time). Once paired, the MEX-N5000BT will automatically re-connect to your device when in close proximity. The head unit also offers unique pairing for Android and iPhone smartphone to make Bluetooth pairing even easier.

    • Near Field Communication (for Android): Android (OS 4.0+) smartphones that have Near Field Communication (NFC) pair simply by touching the Android device's NFC tag to the head unit's NFC tag on it rotary-knob. For older Android smartphones with OS 4.0 or lower, download the NFC Easy Connect app from Google Play to use the head unit's NFC pairing function.
    • USB Pairing (for iPhone): You can pair your Apple iPhone (iOS 5.0+) by simply connecting it to the Sony head unit via USB and activating the Bluetooth function on your Apple device.

Hands-Free Communication w/ External Mic: The Sony MEX-N5000BT supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled cell-phone (such as your iPhone or Android smartphone). Bluetooth hands-free communication helps to minimize distraction while driving by allowing you to control your mobile phone from the head unit, so you don't have to touch your mobile phone. The controls of the MEX-N5000BT can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also features an external microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

    • Answering Calls: Incoming calls can be answered manually or automatically (between 3-10 seconds) through the Sony head unit, while the ring tone is output from your car speakers and the caller's name or phone number is displayed on the head unit's LCD. Incoming calls can also be rejected if desired.
    • Dialing a Number: Using the MEX-N5000BT, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways.
      • Entering Phone #: Allows you to manually dial a phone number using the unit's control dial.
      • Preset Dial: You can store up to 6 contacts in the preset dial for quick dialing.
      • Phone Book: You can store up to 1,000 contacts in the unit's phone book. Up to a 40 character name can be input for each contact.
      • Call History: The unit will store the last 20 calls, allowing you to select a previous phone number quickly from the list.
      • Voice Dial: You can make a call using the voice tags stored on your connected cellular phone.
      • Redial: Use to easily redial the last number you called.
Note: The external wired microphone offers improved audio quality versus an integrated microphone, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise. You can adjust the level of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 11' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone comes with a mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash. The external microphone measures 0.525" (diameter) x 1.515" (depth).

Wireless Audio Streaming (w/ Advanced Music Navigation): The Sony MEX-N5000BT can stream stored music and music apps from your Bluetooth A2DP/AVRCP mobile device (such as your iPhone or Android smartphone). In addition to basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip, Random/Repeat) for both stored music and music apps, the MEX-N5000BT provides a Search List of your stored music by Category or Playlist (AVRCP 1.4 phones only; which includes Android 4.0+ and iPhone 5.0+). The head unit will also display device's stored music and music app song information; such as Artist name & Song/Album title.

Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Eyes Free Control: When paired and connected with an iPhone 4S or 5/5C/5S via Bluetooth (not USB), the Sony MEX-N5000BT has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel control and external microphone. Simply activate the "voice dial" function on the MEX-N5000BT to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the head unit and its microphone. The head unit will only display hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the MEX-N5000BT ; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

Note: You can ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone 4S/5/5C/5S. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

    • Passenger App Control: In Passenger App Control mode, you can navigate the stored music on your iPod/iPhone device through its clickwheel or touchscreen; as well as music apps on an iPhone (iOS 3.0+). Basic playback functions, such as Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track are still available from the head unit. The Passenger App Control mode does not offer song/artist information display. Not all apps will be compatible with this mode.
Note: While connected and the ignition switch is set to ACC or ON, the head unit's USB connection will power and charge your iPod/iPhone (not iPad). If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then this unit will not recognize it.

Dynamic Reality Amp: The redesigned, internal Dynamic Reality Amp circuitry boasts 47% lower internal resistance compared to conventional in-dash receiver, delivering 55 watts x 4 channels of Peak power to your vehicle's speakers. This allows you to crank up the volume while maintaining low distortion, low noise levels, and smooth frequency response. The power output specs for the MEX-N5000BT are as follows:

    • Continuous Power Output: 17 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Peak Power Output: 55 watts x 4-channels (220 total watts)

Note: The power specifications for the Sony MEX-N5000BT are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers.

6ch/2V Preamp Outputs + Sub Control: The Sony MEX-N5000BT is equipped with 2-volt Front, Rear, & Sub pre-amp outputs giving you the ability to connect external amplifiers to your car stereo system. The unit's subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The subwoofer preamp output features a low pass filter with a selectable cut-off frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off. You can also adjust the slope (1/2/3) of the low-pass crossover. You can even adjust the subwoofer preamp output's volume level independently from the head unit's volume control from -10 to +10 in 1dB increments. In addition, you can select the phase of the subwoofer output from Normal or Reverse.

Note: You can connect a subwoofer to this head unit without the need of a separate power amplifier. Simply connect a single subwoofer (4-8 ohm) directly to head unit's left or right rear speaker leads (but not both). Same subwoofer controls apply.

High-Pass Filter: The front & rear speaker outputs offer a selectable high-pass crossover frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off. You can also adjust the slope (1/2/3) of the high-pass crossover.

Advanced Sound Engine: Sony's Advanced Sound Engine creates an ideal in-car sound field with digital signal processing. Advanced Sound Engine contains the following features: EQ10, ClearAudio+, Listening Position, Rear Bass Enhancer (RBE), Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE), Advanced Auto Volume (AAV), and Loudness.

    • EQ10 w/ ClearAudio+: R&B, Rock, Pop, Dance, Hip-Hop, Electronic, Jazz, Soul, Country, Custom, or Off (Flat). The Custom mode allows you to make your own equalizer settings. You can adjust the level (+/-6dB) of 10 different frequency bands - Band1 (32Hz), Band2 (63Hz), Band3 (125Hz), Band4 (250Hz), Band5 (500Hz), Band6 (1khz), Band7 (2khz), Band8 (4kHz), Band9 (8kHz), and Band10 (16kHz).
    • Listening Position: This unit can change the localization of sound by delaying the sound output from each speaker to suit your position, and simulate a natural sound field with the feeling of being in the center of it wherever you sit in the car. You can choose from Front Right, Front Left, Front Center, or Off. You can also set the subwoofer distance of the subwoofer to Near, Normal, or Far
    • Rear Bass Enhancer (RBE): RBE enhances the bass sound by applying the low-pass filter setting to the rear speakers. This function allows the rear speakers to work as a subwoofer even if there is no subwoofer connected.
    • Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE): DSEE improves digitally compressed music files by restoring high frequencies lost in the compression process.
    • Advanced Auto Volume (AAV) + Loudness: This feature adjusts the playback volume level of all playback sources to the optimum level. Loudness reinforces bass and treble for clear sound at low volume levels.

Beep Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Display Features

Detachable Face w/ Caution Alarm: The Sony MEX-N5000BT features a detachable face for theft prevention. If you turn the ignition switch to the Off position without detaching the head unit's front-panel, the caution alarm will sound for a few seconds. The alarm will only sound if the unit's built-in amplifier is used. No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Dynamic Color Illuminator (35,000 colors): Dynamic Color Illuminator lets you match the head unit's LCD & button illumination to complement your existing vehicle lighting components. With selectable Sound Synchronization, the timing of the color change is synchronized with the audio source. You can select from 12 preset colors (red/amber/m-amber/yellow/white/light green/green/light blue/sky blue/blue/purple/pink), customized color (R-G-B), & 5 preset patterns (rainbow/ocean/sunset/forest/random). The unit's Dynamic Color Illuminator offers the following advance features.

    • Day/Night Color Mode: You can register a customize color for the unit's display and buttons for day & night time driving.
    • Sound Synchronization: The color changes according to synchronization of playing music. When you select a preset pattern sound synchronization becomes effective.
    • White Menu: You can display the menu more clearly (White text) without concern for the unit's other color settings.
    • Start White: When you power-on the head unit, the color of the unit's display and buttons turn white and then the color changes to your chosen customize color. You can enjoy this effect whenever the source is turned on.
Note: To change the brightness of the display you can set the MEX-N5000BT to one of three dimmer modes; Dimmer Auto (dims the display automatically when you turn your vehicle's lights on), Dimmer Off (deactivates the dimmer), and Dimmer On (display always dim).

Auto Scroll: The Auto Scroll feature allows long displayed items to scroll automatically across the display when the track is changed on a disc.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: Pressing the Source/Off button once will switch sources. Pressing and holding the Source/Off button for one second will turn off audio output, but the clock display and button illumination remain on. To turn the unit off completely, you must press and hold the Source/Off button for two seconds.

Auto Off: When installing in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you can set the unit to turn off all lighting a set amount of time after you turn the power off. The Auto Off feature can be set to 30 seconds, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, or No.

Demo Mode: The head unit's demo mode can be turned On or Off.

    Remote Control

App Remote Technology: Sony's App Remote Technology offers two-way communication between the Sony MEX-N5000BT and your USB-connected iPhone (iOS 5+) or Bluetooth-paired Android smartphone (2.1-2.3 Froyo/Gingerbread, Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0-4.2). You will need to download the free Sony App Remote application from the Apple App Store or the Google Play App Store. This application integrates compatible Apple iOS and Android apps into the selectable source list of the Sony CD receiver and lets you launch apps from the head unit. You can operate basic functionality of compatible audio apps directly from the receiver (operation differs depending on the app). Movie and navigation apps will continue to be controlled from your smartphone. In addition, you can control the receiver's sources directly from the application on your smartphone using simple finger gestures and see detailed source information on the phone's touchscreen.

    • Receiver Sources: The App Remote lets you access the head unit's Tuner (AM/FM), CD, iPhone, Bluetooth, and Aux sources from your phone's touchscreen. You can use finger gestures to tap, flick left/right, or flick up/down on the phone's touchscreen in order to change AM/FM Band, Play/Pause a track, Seek Up/Down a track or station, select a Preset, or access an Album. You will also be able to see song/artist information from MP3/WMA and smartphone sources, as well as station identification numbers from AM/FM radio.
    • Compatible Apps (as of 2/19/2014): The App Remote also provides various music, movie, and navigation apps which can be accesses from the Sony MEX-N5000BT's source list. Available operation differs depending on the application.
      • Music Apps: Music apps include; Pandora, AUPEO!, iHeartRadio, MOG, and TuneIn. The head unit only provides basic playback functions (Play/Pause, Skip Track, or Next Station) and no song/artist information for these music apps.
      • Movie Apps: Movie apps include Netflix and YouTube. Video will be displayed on your smartphone's screen, while the audio plays through your vehicle's speakers. You can control Play/Pause from the MEX-N5000BT. Other playback functions will need to done on your smartphone. Subscription may be required. You should not watch videos while your vehicle is in motion.
      • Navigation Apps:Supported navigation apps include Apple Maps, Google Maps, Waze, and MotionX GPS Drive. The map screen will display on your smartphone's touchscreen, while audible directions can be heard through your vehicle's speakers. You can continue to listen to music while navigating; the unit will attenuate your music during a navigation voice-prompt. Control of the navigation apps will still be done through your smartphone's touchscreen. Fees may apply for some navigation apps & functions.
    • Voice Communication + Notification Readout (Android only): Exclusive to Android devices, App Remote technology for the MEX-N5000BT head unit adds a voice user interface for voice control of apps and functions such as navigation and music playback, notification readouts including RSS feeds, Twitter, and text message reply. Through voice operation, you can safely and comfortably operate your smartphone in the car from the Sony MEX-N5000BT CD receiver. Incoming SMS/E-mail and Twitter/Facebook/Calendar notifications are automatically read aloud through the MEX-N5000BT and your vehicle's speakers to keep you in touch.
    • Custom Sound Settings: From your Android smartphone remote screen, you get access to audio & DSP settings (Equalizer, Volume Control, Fader/Balance/Subwoofer, and Listening Position).
Note: Access to the music, movie, and navigation apps will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

Wireless Remote Control: The head unit comes supplied with an IR wireless remote control (RM-X231) for easy operation. The included wireless remote allows you to control the basic functions (not Bluetooth) of the Sony head unit while keeping your eyes on the road.

Stiff competition for others in its class

Written by Alexander Hrabe, Copywriter, on 3/27/2014 10:16:00 AM

At this price, the Sony MEX-N5000BT is a hard one to beat. As a dyed-in-the-wool Android user I was pleased right off the bat that the NFC (Near Field Communication) feature allowed me to pair with this receiver by simply touching my phone to the volume knob. Once paired, I quickly discovered that it's the AppRemote feature that makes this receiver special. The app facilitates a 2-way connection that lets you control your phone via the receiver or your receiver via your phone, ostensibly turning this single-DIN into a touchscreen unit.

It's worth spending a little bit of time playing with AppRemote to figure out the best way to use it, since some apps like Google Maps are better accessed outside of the interface, while others, like music apps, work smoothly within. With future versions of the software, I'd imagine Sony will work out the kinks, but one thing they have nailed is the sound settings menu, which gives you multiple screens to perfect your levels and soundstaging.

On top of it all, Sony has built a nice-looking single-DIN receiver with a big, textured volume knob and a clean, no-nonsense LED display. Add to that, SiriusXM compatibility, solid CD playback, a front USB input for your iPod, and there's not much left to want in a radio this size.

Bought this for the teenager's Ford Escape. The teenager loves the features. Received the wrong adapter for the vehicle, but Crutch hooked us with my mistake. Easy to install. Some of the setup menu's are difficult to navigate without a 'tree' chart, but it's manageable.
    Pros:
    Fits, Sounds good, easy install.

Replaced an inexpensive Sony GT56UI, also purchased from Crutchfield, because its USB port died, and because I do a lot of driving around town, and I wanted a Bluetooth receiver for safety's sake. It fit right into the old slot, but the harness was different. The Crutchfield dash install kit was still good. I expected, at this price, a comparable receiver with bluetooth added, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that it is a huge upgrade. It shows the same 8dB sensitivity, on paper, as the previous receiver but it picks up much better. Almost keeps receiving after the stations goes off the air. Sounds better, too, significantly. Can change the color scheme, if I cared. Hooked right up to my iphone 4s bluetooth, and I'm a much safer driver now. In my 2003 Camry, I run the back factory 6x9 speakers as subwoofers using the receiver's DBE feature, and it is great. The

This is one awesome piece of equipment. I replaced my factory stereo and immediately the sound quality doubled. The features are a nice bonus too. I don't have to recommend this to my friends because they get to hear it for themselves. I definitely recommend it to you though.
    Pros:
Bluetooth capable, it sounds nice, it changes colors too!

    Verdict Isn't Quite In Yet...But

Written By heyzarling, Hustisford, WI on Monday, August 25, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the 3rd Sony head unit I've bought in the past maybe 3 or 4 years. My primary consideration with these things was at least adequate sound but also Bluetooth integration and ability to charge iPhones. So...essentially I find the way these units connect, stay connected, generally behave, to be kind of erratic and inconsistent with iPhone, latest-greatest iOS, etc. There are just little quirky things about how they pair via Bluetooth, what one needs to do to sort of 'wake up' pairing, etc. This particular one is probably the weirdest of the three, though it utilizes a newer version of Bluetooth.

I'd actually called Sony support after the unit just wouldn't re-pair by itself without my always going to the phone to make it happen. Basically had to unpaid and repair in a little different order, and it's been good since.

Presently my two weird-ish issues (so far) are that when I plug USB in (to charge), it immediately switches over to running audio over USB (which is good), and Bluetooth phone continues to work (also good), but it slways auto-plays some audio. If the last thing I've played on my phone is Music, then it auto plays wherever i left off. Interestingly, if it's a podcast last played, it often starts a different podcast altogether. The other thing is that just today, I was using Bluetooth phone, another call came in, had to switch via phone, and then speakerphone was disabled.

Finally, I miss on the old unit having a quick way to 'pause' audio.
    Pros:
Sounds good, lots of features for the money, quality of mic and speakerphone business is decent. I mean, overall, it's still really great, and really cheap. I hate to even ding it with 4 stars for the money, but still, I wish their testing and compatibility were overall just more thorough and bulletproof before going to market.
    Cons:
Quirky iPhone stuff as noted above...also, I really don't personally have any use for the iPhone app itself. I guess my expectations were too high; I kind of thought it would basically do everything the head's UI would do, but better, but that's not at all the case. A result of this is that now the head gives me an 'Open App' message (like, do this, dummy), which requires my doing a mode click to blow it off and reenable general controls. I'll also mentioned that the output to sub is pretty low.

    Great Bluetooth Receiver

Written By Tim, Killeen, TX on Saturday, August 23, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For its price, this receiver is EXCELLENT. Bluetooth connects very well consistently, call quality with the included microphone has been great, and controls are relatively easy to use. Buttons are small, but that will be the case with any single-DIN receiver. Sometimes when I use the receiver to go through my phone's contact list it says "unsupported," but this is normally fixed by turning my Galaxy S5's bluetooth off and on again. The ability to look up contacts, make phone calls, turn on Pandora, and toggle between inputs using just the receiver controls is very smooth and convenient. The Sony "App Remote" is bulky, and I suggest not using it. The app automatically launches on your phone every time you connect via bluetooth, and it prevents you from using certain features of the stereo such as bluetooth pandora control. The text message readout also works inconsistently. It did seem to have some neat features like the ability to store preferences, but I ultimately removed the app. However, I purchased this stereo because it has the most features for the price. The sound is great, the preset and custom EQ's are awesome, and it even gives you custom color control. Of course, the install was very easy between the help from Crutchfield and the manufacturer's instructions. I would definitely buy this stereo again.
    Pros:
Great sound Easy to use Clear bluetooth Very customizable
    Cons:
Sony app remote is not worth the hassle

Overall, I think it's a great stereo. The stereo I ordered had a defect and Crutchfield handled the problem swiftly and sent me a replacement; they have great customer support.
    Pros:

    Cons:
    - Not a big deal, but some of the buttons feel kind of flimsy. Overall the quality is good.

    Good performance, UI is tricky

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace an OEM Monsoon radio/cassette player in a 2000 VW Golf. Installation was pretty straightforward (thanks for the necessary tools and instructions, Crutchfield!) and the device works well. Very good sound, lots of features, and they seem to work in sensible ways. For example, listening to music via the USB connection, if a phone call arrives it will hand off from the USB source to the Bluetooth source for the call, then go back to the USB source when the call is done. Nice to be able to set your own colors, and lots of other configurable features.

The main things I'm not liking about it so far are that the buttons are tiny and hard to use without looking while you're driving, and that the ergonomics and user interface are not well designed. The volume knob and forward/back buttons are easy enough, but the power button (which is also the source selection button) is tiny and right next to the volume knob. The menu button is also the display button, and is also tiny. This sharing of features on small buttons is annoying - I want to power off, but end up changing source by accident. Or I want to have the display show the artist instead of the song title, or the clock, but end up in a configuration menu tree instead. Changing source requires me to hit the tiny power button multiple times (or hit it once and turn the volume knob), and then cycle through the umpteen sources, including ones that I'm not likely to ever use (i.e., Pandora USB, Pandora BT, etc.)
    Pros:
Good sound, looks nice, seems like a quality product that will last a long time. Bluetooth connection is quick and stable. Lots of good functionality.
    Cons:
Ergonomics and user interface are not efficient. Sony app supposedly could help with this, but it is not very good.

    Great Stereo

Written By B, Youngsville, NC on Thursday, August 14, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This stereo is a great replacement/upgrade for me. I had an older JVC CD player head unit that had the volume up button fail closed and the CD player eject stopped working (both things I fixed but it was time for an upgrade). This stereo really does all I want for a very reasonable price.

The sound customization is awesome, even though I already had an aftermarket radio, this one makes the previous unit sound like a toy. The car I installed it in never had bluetooth/handsfree anything so that's also well worth the price. I may be upgrading my other car radio soon now...

Since this is a single DIN stereo, I mounted the mic in the cubby in the adapter bracket.
    Pros:
Great sound quality/customization options. Bluetooth connects immediately. Good FM reception. RDS works great. Being able to color match the rest of my dash lights with the faceplate makes the unit look even better. Pandora integration works perfectly.
    Cons:
The sony app remote doesn't work very well for me; it isn't consistent at all and certain functions cause it to crash on my phone. I removed the app from my phone and now everything with the radio/phone connecting works great. Not quiteworth knocking of a star because of even though my phone is one Sony specifically lists as compatible. Folks on the other end of my phone calls have mentioned some noise but I think this is more due to my noisy old car than it is quality of the stereo/mic set

    Sony MEX-N5000BT

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The CD and cassette players in our 2002 Nissan Pathfinder LE stopped working so I had no choice but to replace the HU. After renting a Ford Escape with Sony audio sound system, I was so impressed with the sound produced and ease of use, worked so well with the iPhone 5 and Siri, Bluetooth for audio streaming was flawless, connects as you get in the vehicle, so decided to go for this Sony MEX-N5000BT, not only for the prize but also because of the previous wonderful experience I had with the rental SUV. My decision was right. Now I could say, Siri is the best personal assistant you can have inside your car/SUV. It's totally handsfree, all you gotta do is ask Siri if you have and read a new e-mail or text messages and send (after dictating) your response, play your song collections or playlist, tune-in or change radio stations as what you have set-up in your iTunes radio, all with stunning sound. It really blended well with our Path's Bose speakers. One of the many great features that comes with this HU is the RB ENH( rear bass enhancer), it tremendously improved the bass reproduction, as if I have installed a subwoofer as well. You can tailor the way how you want to set-up your sound. The microphone works well when making calls, my family said they could hear me clear enough. One more thing that drove me to get this HU, is the prize, been consistent in Crutchfield and other retailers. to me it's a good sign that it's a good product. Thanks much Crutchfield support/help team.

This is a very nice radio for the price. Installation was very simple with the free gear from Crutchfield. Sound quality and control is outstanding! We especially have enjoyed the bluetooth Pandora feature with our android phones - it's not listed in the specs, but our HTC Desire connected without a problem.
    Pros:
Build quality and sound quality are excellent. Feature set is outstanding for the price.
    Cons:
The menus are not very intuitive. Some menu items use cryptic abbreviation, and studying the manual is necessary to preform some basic functions. There is no button on the face that cycles through the EQ presets - at least, none that I've found yet.

This radio is a very nice sounding system. I really like the App for my phone to remotely make changes and adjustments. I am buying another one for my sons car as well.

good solid sound. .Bluetooth aweful. everytime you shut the car off you have to relink the Bluetooth.. a real game changer..the Pandora app feature is useless but you can stream thru either way.. buttons way to small for people with large hands..The wired mic is not easy to routein my car and is an eye soar.. Good price but would prefer something easier to use..
    Pros:
    good sound, price
    Cons:
    Bluetooth not cutting it

As always a great deal from Crutchfield... Install was pretty easy only because I had to do some small modifications to my vehicle in order for it to fit.... Great sound and quality
    Pros:
Great functions and style... Simple install.... Awesome features for the price
    Cons:
This is my first Bluetooth head unit so that part was a little bit hard for me to figure out,,,, Hardest part for me is the phone answering and SMS messaging features....

    Best bang for the buck

Best bang for the buck if you want bluetooth phone. Sound quality is excellent both for music and phone. People always comment on how clear they receive you. The mic that come with the unit works very well.
    Pros:
Quality all round. Would recommend. Will likely buy another one for car #2 if it's 10yr old sony CD deck ever quits. Crutchfield customer support is excellent and great install kit came with the stereo for free. Made install a snap.
    Cons:
The learning curve is steep. Lots of new tech terms and menu's. The sony instruction manual could be better.

    Sony MEX-N5000BT

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this Sony because it looked great and has NFC bluetooth capabilities. The unit will not return to music after I complete a phone call. It would not download the phonebook from my Motorola RAZR. Crutchfiled exchanged it for another N5000BT. It has the same problems. I bought two new Samsung cell phones, a Galaxy Light for me and a Galaxy Essentials for my wife. Both are NFC capable. However, neither will connect to the Sony with the NFC. Just get an error message saying the pairing failed. I have an Alpine CDE133BT in my van and every phone I've owned will readily connect and download my phonebooks, unlike the Sony. The Sony will pair manually but requires me to get my cellphone out and initiate the call from the phonebook on the cellphone. My other complaint is the difference in volume levels from one tune to the other on my USB drive. It runs from "the volume is just right" to " I need to turn it way up if I want to hear anything." Again, unlike the Alpine in my van. Looks like I will be sending this thing back to Crutchfield and getting an Alpine. The changeable colors on the display are nice, though.
    Pros:
    Changeable display colors.
    Cons:
Bluetooth for my Motorola Razr and Samsung Galaxy cellphones is almost worthless. The NFC doesn't work. Sound volume varies greatly from one tune to the other on USB.

    Amazing radio, great service!

Written By Matt, Seneca Rocks, WV on Saturday, August 02, 2014

I was looking for a radio to replace the factory head unit in my 1999 Chevy Lumina. I wanted something with cd, bluetooth, and good fm sensitivity; and this definitely met all my needs! Plus it sounds amazing even with my factory speakers! It came with everything I needed to mount it, and installation was fast and pretty simple. Crutchfield's service team was amazing to answer all my questions and the shipping was fast. Will definitely buy here again!
    Pros:
FM sensitivity Bluetooth Clear sound Plenty of equalizer options Plenty of display colors for a customized look

    disappointing

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I realize that for the price, this head unit should be judged as a budget-end product. That being said, it claims to support Bluetooth, NFC, and USB. My unit refuses to work with any of those reliably. I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 running KitKat. My Sony radio does not recognize NFC at all and when I plug in the USB it displays "not supported" even though there are a couple settings for USB connections and the USB port is prominently displayed. Bluetooth is especially frustrating, as it takes 5-10 minutes of actively pairing/unpairing/pairing and fiddling with settings to establish bluetooth connectivity. This is useless for me. When I get in my car, I want to go someplace. It would be nice to have a hands-free option that just worked. I'm not going to spend 5 to 10 minutes manually connecting my phone just so I can have hands-free calling or listen to Pandora or listen to podcasts or music stored on my phone. I regret removing my factory head unit, which at least had a persistent clock display separate from the radio display.

Which brings up the other main point of frustration: the Sony's controls are insane. To get the clock to display (it doesn't by default) you have to find (small buttons) and hold the Menu button. Sometimes that takes you to a different layer of information and you have to press and hold a second time to finally get the clock to display. You have to do this EVERY time you start the car or switch between, say, tuner and BT audio.
    Pros:
    clock autosyncs
    Cons:
poor UI unreliable functions performs worse than the factory radio must take eyes off road to find and press teeny multifunction buttons to do basic things like switch from tuner to Pandora.

If you are looking for hands free Bluetooth, keep looking

Written By DullRazr, West Virginia on Thursday, July 31, 2014

If a phone call is initiated using the button on the head unit while playing a Bluetooth (BT) audio source, it does not pause the audio playback and when the phone call is complete, it does not resume playing. You have to manually select the BT audio source and rewind the playback to where the phone call was started. This fails has a "hands free" device. Spent more time with my eyes off the road fiddling around with this unit than I did without it. The display is not bright enough to be seen in daylight and (even with the dimmer off). At night, the Call button is so bright (even with the dimmer on) that it is distracting to the driver and adversely affects night vision. Returned it for the JVC KW-R910BT. For $20 more, a much better unit that has Bluetooth functionality that works as you would expect and multiple options for setting the brightness of the display.
    Cons:
Poor Bluetooth functionality, inadequate dimmer controls
