Our take on the Sony MEX-N5000BT

by Ken Nail
Sony

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Smartphone interactivity, Sony style

Sony's understands that your smartphone is a big part of your life, so the MEX-N5000BT CD receiver offers plenty of ways to use it with in your car audio system. Sony's App Remote feature lets you take charge of selecting sources, picking radio stations, and launching apps from your phone's touchscreen, while on the other side you can select apps using the stereo's source button, the same way you'd choose the CD player or radio as your source. Best of all, App Remote lets your phone work as a display for the receiver, so you can see album art, track info, caller information, and more on your phone, rather than reading it off the receiver's single line display.

Connect to compatible iPhones® through Bluetooth® and you can activate voice commands and inquiries from the receiver. Speak your commands and you'll hear your iPhone response through your car audio speakers. And this receiver will notify you of any incoming text messages, so you can keep your eyes on the road.

Bluetooth that's easy to use

The MEX-N5000BT's built-in Bluetooth adds a new level of convenience and capability to your car. You can pair up your mobile phone and talk hands-free when you get a call, plus you can stream the music stored on your mobile device wirelessly to this Sony receiver. Pairing is easy with Sony's Simple Secure Pairing system, and if your phone supports NFC, you can simply touch it to the receiver to pair the device.

Sony MEX-N5000BT CD Receiver

With over 35,00 colors available, you're sure to find the right hue for your dash.

The center of a great car audio system

The MEX-N5000BT includes Sony's impressive Advanced Sound Engine, featuring a 10-band EQ, digital time alignment to set up a perfect stereo "sweet spot," and frequency filters to make your speaker setup shine. Sony's powerful Digital Reality amp is noted for its solid sound output and realistic audio reproduction. If you're looking to expand your system with external amps, you'll find three sets of preamp outputs.

You've got great musical options too. Check out your latest CD, or browse your favorite Pandora® Internet radio stations from the receiver's controls. You can plug your iPhone® or iPod® into the USB input — Sony's Quick-BrowZer® makes it easy to search for songs by artist, album, song, genre, or playlist. And you can add on a SiriusXM tuner (subscription required), if you want to experience an unparalleled variety of news, talk, sports, and music. Even cooler, you can choose from over 35,000 colors to make this receiver look right at home in your dash.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Sony stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the receiver, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Note: Bluetooth compatibility of this device may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Sony MEX-N5000BT is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (version 3.1), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.6 (Hands Free Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.3 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.5 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Sony MEX-N5000BT. Please visit Sony eSupport for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

Simple Pairing: With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Sony MEX-N5000BT without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. You can register up to nine Bluetooth enabled devices with the Sony head unit and keep two devices connected at all times (only one can be used at a time). Once paired, the MEX-N5000BT will automatically re-connect to your device when in close proximity. The head unit also offers unique pairing for Android and iPhone smartphone to make Bluetooth pairing even easier.

    • Near Field Communication (for Android): Android (OS 4.0+) smartphones that have Near Field Communication (NFC) pair simply by touching the Android device's NFC tag to the head unit's NFC tag on it rotary-knob. For older Android smartphones with OS 4.0 or lower, download the NFC Easy Connect app from Google Play to use the head unit's NFC pairing function.
    • USB Pairing (for iPhone): You can pair your Apple iPhone (iOS 5.0+) by simply connecting it to the Sony head unit via USB and activating the Bluetooth function on your Apple device.

Hands-Free Communication w/ External Mic: The Sony MEX-N5000BT supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled cell-phone (such as your iPhone or Android smartphone). Bluetooth hands-free communication helps to minimize distraction while driving by allowing you to control your mobile phone from the head unit, so you don't have to touch your mobile phone. The controls of the MEX-N5000BT can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also features an external microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

    • Answering Calls: Incoming calls can be answered manually or automatically (between 3-10 seconds) through the Sony head unit, while the ring tone is output from your car speakers and the caller's name or phone number is displayed on the head unit's LCD. Incoming calls can also be rejected if desired.
    • Dialing a Number: Using the MEX-N5000BT, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways.
      • Entering Phone #: Allows you to manually dial a phone number using the unit's control dial.
      • Preset Dial: You can store up to 6 contacts in the preset dial for quick dialing.
      • Phone Book: You can store up to 1,000 contacts in the unit's phone book. Up to a 40 character name can be input for each contact.
      • Call History: The unit will store the last 20 calls, allowing you to select a previous phone number quickly from the list.
      • Voice Dial: You can make a call using the voice tags stored on your connected cellular phone.
      • Redial: Use to easily redial the last number you called.
Note: The external wired microphone offers improved audio quality versus an integrated microphone, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise. You can adjust the level of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 11' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone comes with a mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash. The external microphone measures 0.525" (diameter) x 1.515" (depth).

Wireless Audio Streaming (w/ Advanced Music Navigation): The Sony MEX-N5000BT can stream stored music and music apps from your Bluetooth A2DP/AVRCP mobile device (such as your iPhone or Android smartphone). In addition to basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip, Random/Repeat) for both stored music and music apps, the MEX-N5000BT provides a Search List of your stored music by Category or Playlist (AVRCP 1.4 phones only; which includes Android 4.0+ and iPhone 5.0+). The head unit will also display device's stored music and music app song information; such as Artist name & Song/Album title.

Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Eyes Free Control: When paired and connected with an iPhone 4S or 5/5C/5S via Bluetooth (not USB), the Sony MEX-N5000BT has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel control and external microphone. Simply activate the "voice dial" function on the MEX-N5000BT to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the head unit and its microphone. The head unit will only display hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the MEX-N5000BT ; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

Note: You can ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone 4S/5/5C/5S. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

    Disc & USB Playback

Disc Compatibility: The unit features a single disc player that will playback CD-Audio and finalized CD-R/CD-RW audio discs. The unit supports the playback of MP3/WMA music files on a CD-R or CD-RW disc.

    iPod/Aux Integration

iPod/iPhone Audio Playback w/ DAC Bypass: The MEX-N5000BT's front-panel USB port allows you to connect your iPod/iPhone via the iPod dock or Lightning connector-to-USB cable that comes with your iPod or iPhone (not included with the head unit). This USB 1-Wire for iPod/iPhone connection lets you directly connect, charge, & control select iPod/iPhones via the USB jack on the front of the unit, as well as view metadata like song title & artist name on the front display. The USB connection bypasses the iPod/iPhone's DAC and uses the head unit's 24-bit DAC to maximize sound quality. • Head Unit Control + Song/Artist Info: The MEX-N5000BT's Quick-BrowZer feature allows you to browse your iPod/iPhone's music library by Artist, Album, Song, Genre, Playlist, or Podcast from the head unit's front-panel control; content in each category will be listed alphabetically. Newer Apple devices with iOS 6.0+ allow you to continue to use your Apple device's touchscreen to navigate your stored music and access music apps; older iPod/iPhone devices will be locked during connection.
    • Passenger App Control: In Passenger App Control mode, you can navigate the stored music on your iPod/iPhone device through its clickwheel or touchscreen; as well as music apps on an iPhone (iOS 3.0+). Basic playback functions, such as Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track are still available from the head unit. The Passenger App Control mode does not offer song/artist information display. Not all apps will be compatible with this mode.
Note: While connected and the ignition switch is set to ACC or ON, the head unit's USB connection will power and charge your iPod/iPhone (not iPad). If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then this unit will not recognize it.

    Audio Section

Dynamic Reality Amp: The redesigned, internal Dynamic Reality Amp circuitry boasts 47% lower internal resistance compared to conventional in-dash receiver, delivering 55 watts x 4 channels of Peak power to your vehicle's speakers. This allows you to crank up the volume while maintaining low distortion, low noise levels, and smooth frequency response. The power output specs for the MEX-N5000BT are as follows:

    • Continuous Power Output: 17 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Peak Power Output: 55 watts x 4-channels (220 total watts)

Note: The power specifications for the Sony MEX-N5000BT are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers.

6ch/2V Preamp Outputs + Sub Control: The Sony MEX-N5000BT is equipped with 2-volt Front, Rear, & Sub pre-amp outputs giving you the ability to connect external amplifiers to your car stereo system. The unit's subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The subwoofer preamp output features a low pass filter with a selectable cut-off frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off. You can also adjust the slope (1/2/3) of the low-pass crossover. You can even adjust the subwoofer preamp output's volume level independently from the head unit's volume control from -10 to +10 in 1dB increments. In addition, you can select the phase of the subwoofer output from Normal or Reverse.

Note: You can connect a subwoofer to this head unit without the need of a separate power amplifier. Simply connect a single subwoofer (4-8 ohm) directly to head unit's left or right rear speaker leads (but not both). Same subwoofer controls apply.

High-Pass Filter: The front & rear speaker outputs offer a selectable high-pass crossover frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off. You can also adjust the slope (1/2/3) of the high-pass crossover.

Advanced Sound Engine: Sony's Advanced Sound Engine creates an ideal in-car sound field with digital signal processing. Advanced Sound Engine contains the following features: EQ10, ClearAudio+, Listening Position, Rear Bass Enhancer (RBE), Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE), Advanced Auto Volume (AAV), and Loudness.

    • EQ10 w/ ClearAudio+: R&B, Rock, Pop, Dance, Hip-Hop, Electronic, Jazz, Soul, Country, Custom, or Off (Flat). The Custom mode allows you to make your own equalizer settings. You can adjust the level (+/-6dB) of 10 different frequency bands - Band1 (32Hz), Band2 (63Hz), Band3 (125Hz), Band4 (250Hz), Band5 (500Hz), Band6 (1khz), Band7 (2khz), Band8 (4kHz), Band9 (8kHz), and Band10 (16kHz).
    • Listening Position: This unit can change the localization of sound by delaying the sound output from each speaker to suit your position, and simulate a natural sound field with the feeling of being in the center of it wherever you sit in the car. You can choose from Front Right, Front Left, Front Center, or Off. You can also set the subwoofer distance of the subwoofer to Near, Normal, or Far
    • Rear Bass Enhancer (RBE): RBE enhances the bass sound by applying the low-pass filter setting to the rear speakers. This function allows the rear speakers to work as a subwoofer even if there is no subwoofer connected.
    • Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE): DSEE improves digitally compressed music files by restoring high frequencies lost in the compression process.
    • Advanced Auto Volume (AAV) + Loudness: This feature adjusts the playback volume level of all playback sources to the optimum level. Loudness reinforces bass and treble for clear sound at low volume levels.

Beep Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Display Features

Detachable Face w/ Caution Alarm: The Sony MEX-N5000BT features a detachable face for theft prevention. If you turn the ignition switch to the Off position without detaching the head unit's front-panel, the caution alarm will sound for a few seconds. The alarm will only sound if the unit's built-in amplifier is used. No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Dynamic Color Illuminator (35,000 colors): Dynamic Color Illuminator lets you match the head unit's LCD & button illumination to complement your existing vehicle lighting components. With selectable Sound Synchronization, the timing of the color change is synchronized with the audio source. You can select from 12 preset colors (red/amber/m-amber/yellow/white/light green/green/light blue/sky blue/blue/purple/pink), customized color (R-G-B), & 5 preset patterns (rainbow/ocean/sunset/forest/random). The unit's Dynamic Color Illuminator offers the following advance features.

    • Day/Night Color Mode: You can register a customize color for the unit's display and buttons for day & night time driving.
    • Sound Synchronization: The color changes according to synchronization of playing music. When you select a preset pattern sound synchronization becomes effective.
    • White Menu: You can display the menu more clearly (White text) without concern for the unit's other color settings.
    • Start White: When you power-on the head unit, the color of the unit's display and buttons turn white and then the color changes to your chosen customize color. You can enjoy this effect whenever the source is turned on.
Note: To change the brightness of the display you can set the MEX-N5000BT to one of three dimmer modes; Dimmer Auto (dims the display automatically when you turn your vehicle's lights on), Dimmer Off (deactivates the dimmer), and Dimmer On (display always dim).

Auto Scroll: The Auto Scroll feature allows long displayed items to scroll automatically across the display when the track is changed on a disc.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: Pressing the Source/Off button once will switch sources. Pressing and holding the Source/Off button for one second will turn off audio output, but the clock display and button illumination remain on. To turn the unit off completely, you must press and hold the Source/Off button for two seconds.

Auto Off: When installing in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you can set the unit to turn off all lighting a set amount of time after you turn the power off. The Auto Off feature can be set to 30 seconds, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, or No.

Demo Mode: The head unit's demo mode can be turned On or Off.

    Remote Control

App Remote Technology: Sony's App Remote Technology offers two-way communication between the Sony MEX-N5000BT and your USB-connected iPhone (iOS 5+) or Bluetooth-paired Android smartphone (2.1-2.3 Froyo/Gingerbread, Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0-4.2). You will need to download the free Sony App Remote application from the Apple App Store or the Google Play App Store. This application integrates compatible Apple iOS and Android apps into the selectable source list of the Sony CD receiver and lets you launch apps from the head unit. You can operate basic functionality of compatible audio apps directly from the receiver (operation differs depending on the app). Movie and navigation apps will continue to be controlled from your smartphone. In addition, you can control the receiver's sources directly from the application on your smartphone using simple finger gestures and see detailed source information on the phone's touchscreen.

    • Receiver Sources: The App Remote lets you access the head unit's Tuner (AM/FM), CD, iPhone, Bluetooth, and Aux sources from your phone's touchscreen. You can use finger gestures to tap, flick left/right, or flick up/down on the phone's touchscreen in order to change AM/FM Band, Play/Pause a track, Seek Up/Down a track or station, select a Preset, or access an Album. You will also be able to see song/artist information from MP3/WMA and smartphone sources, as well as station identification numbers from AM/FM radio.
    • Compatible Apps (as of 2/19/2014): The App Remote also provides various music, movie, and navigation apps which can be accesses from the Sony MEX-N5000BT's source list. Available operation differs depending on the application.
      • Music Apps: Music apps include; Pandora, AUPEO!, iHeartRadio, MOG, and TuneIn. The head unit only provides basic playback functions (Play/Pause, Skip Track, or Next Station) and no song/artist information for these music apps.
      • Movie Apps: Movie apps include Netflix and YouTube. Video will be displayed on your smartphone's screen, while the audio plays through your vehicle's speakers. You can control Play/Pause from the MEX-N5000BT. Other playback functions will need to done on your smartphone. Subscription may be required. You should not watch videos while your vehicle is in motion.
      • Navigation Apps:Supported navigation apps include Apple Maps, Google Maps, Waze, and MotionX GPS Drive. The map screen will display on your smartphone's touchscreen, while audible directions can be heard through your vehicle's speakers. You can continue to listen to music while navigating; the unit will attenuate your music during a navigation voice-prompt. Control of the navigation apps will still be done through your smartphone's touchscreen. Fees may apply for some navigation apps & functions.
    • Voice Communication + Notification Readout (Android only): Exclusive to Android devices, App Remote technology for the MEX-N5000BT head unit adds a voice user interface for voice control of apps and functions such as navigation and music playback, notification readouts including RSS feeds, Twitter, and text message reply. Through voice operation, you can safely and comfortably operate your smartphone in the car from the Sony MEX-N5000BT CD receiver. Incoming SMS/E-mail and Twitter/Facebook/Calendar notifications are automatically read aloud through the MEX-N5000BT and your vehicle's speakers to keep you in touch.
    • Custom Sound Settings: From your Android smartphone remote screen, you get access to audio & DSP settings (Equalizer, Volume Control, Fader/Balance/Subwoofer, and Listening Position).
Note: Access to the music, movie, and navigation apps will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

Wireless Remote Control: The head unit comes supplied with an IR wireless remote control (RM-X231) for easy operation. The included wireless remote allows you to control the basic functions (not Bluetooth) of the Sony head unit while keeping your eyes on the road.

Stiff competition for others in its class

Written by Alexander Hrabe, Copywriter, on 3/27/2014 10:16:00 AM

At this price, the Sony MEX-N5000BT is a hard one to beat. As a dyed-in-the-wool Android user I was pleased right off the bat that the NFC (Near Field Communication) feature allowed me to pair with this receiver by simply touching my phone to the volume knob. Once paired, I quickly discovered that it's the AppRemote feature that makes this receiver special. The app facilitates a 2-way connection that lets you control your phone via the receiver or your receiver via your phone, ostensibly turning this single-DIN into a touchscreen unit.

It's worth spending a little bit of time playing with AppRemote to figure out the best way to use it, since some apps like Google Maps are better accessed outside of the interface, while others, like music apps, work smoothly within. With future versions of the software, I'd imagine Sony will work out the kinks, but one thing they have nailed is the sound settings menu, which gives you multiple screens to perfect your levels and soundstaging.

On top of it all, Sony has built a nice-looking single-DIN receiver with a big, textured volume knob and a clean, no-nonsense LED display. Add to that, SiriusXM compatibility, solid CD playback, a front USB input for your iPod, and there's not much left to want in a radio this size.

First I would like to say, it is important to follow the install instruction completely. I made the mistake of not removing the negative from the vehicle battery, had I done so it would have saved me troubleshooting time. There still are a few things I have not been successful, but I think a call to the support team may clear up my issues .
    Pros:
Great sound from the factory speakers. Ease in use.
    Cons:
Some instruction are not clear, took me a few times to get everything running.

I was very apprehensive about doing the install myself but very eager to replace the stock radio (finally!) in my 2005 Corolla. After a hiccup upon discovering that my Corolla has a JBL sound system installed (apparently a rare unicorn) I ordered and received everything needed to swap out stereos.

After 1 phone call with Crutchfield texh support I felt confident enough to assemble all the parts and with a friends help, we tackled the install. This is a massive upgrade from my old setup, and getting it set up has been relatively easy.

For you iPhone users: BT auto-sync must be turned on and you must first set up the connection by connecting your iPhone via USB with bt enabled on the phone. This pairs it and will allow auto sync every time you get in the car. (I found this difficult to understand in the manual and the internet was zero help). Overall it has great sound, I like the color display, and the bt link is great.
    Pros:
BT connection with my phone, easy to make calls, can preset phone numbers to dial through the receiver, streaming. Nice long microphone cord
    Cons:
    None yet.

Nice replacement head unit for my Jeep Wrangler. I like the Bluetooth functions and the mic. The control buttons are on the small side and some of the settings are difficult to access. After you pair your phone with it and plug it up to the usb port you can access the menu and change the settings from your phone, this makes it much easier.
    Pros:
Lots of features for the amount of money.
    Cons:
    Settings somewhat complicated.

Excellent value and simple hook up of the bluetooth. I love the Sony app on my phone
    Pros:
Well built and simple yet great looking. Advanced tuning of settings let's you customize everything from the color of the display to sound settings normally found on a much more expensive head unit. I was very impressed. Streaming music thru bluetooth from Pandora sounds great!
    Cons:
All the advanced features and settings can be a bit overwhelming for a user looking for a very simple unit but a quick read thru the owner's manual will clear things up

    Sony stereo...

Written By Anonymous, Newcastle, OK on Wednesday, July 02, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently ordered the Sony MEX-N5000BT for my 2001 Ford F150 Super Crew. I used to have a great quality Kenwood stereo but I wanted Bluetooth. So I asked Crutchfield's product advice people in a chat room and he suggested several stereos and I shopped around and decided on this. Keep in mind that I have had 3 Sony decks over the years and I have never regretted it... So I ordered this to replace the Kenwood that I gave to my father for father's day. When I installed it and finally figured out how to use the menu I was shocked by the abundance of features that the Kenwood did not have. I especially like the HIGH PASS FILTER (HPF on the screen) it allows me to filter all of the lows from my door speakers and lets the sub take care of them, I like this cause it avoids distortion that the speakers give off when they can boy handle the bass.
    Pros:
Music synchronized variable color illumination. High Pass Filter. Ease of Bluetooth connectivity and operation.
    Cons:
Difficult to get used to the menu setup.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nothing but problems. The iPod USB connection (the main reason I bought the unit) keeps disconnecting, probably once every 2 or 3 minutes it will say "No USB Device" the re-read the iPod and start playing again, even tried two different USB cables and that didnt change anything. The sound quality is no better than the 15 year old stock Ford unit, I went through every setting on the unit trying to make the sound better without any success. Bluetooth connection is inconsistent, sometimes it connects fine other times it connects without any success. Lastly a tiny almost hidden button for changing inputs from the head of the unit makes it difficult to change inputs while driving. Very frustrated that I wasted two hours installing such a bad unit.

The Crutchfield team was great in answering my questions and the instructions they provided were comprehensive and easy to follow.
    Pros:
Easy to pair your Bluetooth, just tap the volume Button
    Cons:
iPod USB connection continually disconnects. Sound quality terrible Difficult if not dangerous to use the tiny input change button on the head of the unit.

    Good but not great

My main reason to purchase was for the bluetooth audio and smartphone integration features. These work reasonably well, but have areas in need of polish. The android app is buggy and regularly crashed on my MotoX. I uninstalled it and simply use the native bluetooth pairing. While this works it disables some of the head unit button functions like track skip. Another annoying point is changing sources on the head unit. It would have been nice if the row of buttons allowed to directly select a predetermined source. Instead you have to toggle through source by repeatedly pressing the source button. Given the variety of sources (Fm1, 2... BT, voice, pandora, etc..) and the fact that there is a delay between each is annoying.
    Pros:
    Android integration works well
    Cons:
    Mediocre interface

    Freaking Amazing!

This Head Unit is the most awesome thing I've ever seen or have ever had in a build. I was able to take an outdated sound system, car design and bring my vehicle to the modern era. The HU can do whatever any other can. The price for what you get is extremely great. Even Wally World charges 200-250 for a similar Unit that's not a big brand name like "Sony". I've read several review prior to purchasing and was a bit worried about how complicated the system is and the fact that you had to blue tooth your phone every time you get into the vehicle. Personally it doesn't bother me since you're going to be messing with the radio before you start driving. The remote is very handy and a nice addition, but honestly don't see a point. I sat down for 5 minutes and had the entire Unit figured out. It's not that complicated, and I did it without reading any instructions (Male here).
    Pros:
Amazing Head Unit. Can change it to any color scheme you have for the vehicle. The Price. Looks amazing and sounds amazing.
    Cons:
Opening the box took 0.2 seconds longer than I wanted it to. Darn tape.

Excellent Radio - Crutchfield is the best

Written By Jim, SLC on Friday, June 20, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I can't believe I waited this long to upgrade my factory radio. Replacing it myself always seemed daunting and expensive to get what I wanted. However, this radio has bluetooth calling which makes my commutes much safer and easier and pairing my iphone was a breeze. It also works seemlessly with Pandora. FM quality is much improved. The radio also looks really cool and was able to use the color selection to match the rest of the dash lights so it looks like it was made for my vehicle. Routing the bluetooth microphone was the most challenging part, but with some tech support from Crutchfield, it was straightforward and you can't even see anything except the mic itself. I would not purchase another car stereo anywhere else. The support is great, not to mention the free installation gear and guides. Highly recommend this radio AND buying it from Crutchfield.
    Pros:
Great sound, looks cool, bluetooth works great.
    Cons:
Takes some time to figure the menus out and Sony's setup instructions leave a bit to be desired.

This radio lives up to the Sony name. I like it because it provides all the functions that are include on new vehicle radio for a lot more cost i.e. Bluetooth, Pandora, xm, usb. easy phone connect and talk. The only drawback is the size of the icons on the faceplate...very small and for me difficult to read while driving. I highly recommend this radio.
    Pros:
Good sound, easy volume control, easy menu control, easy Bluetooth connection with smart phone (Samsung Galaxy S4)

Great head unit for the price

I sold the car that had the older version of this unit and when I got a new car I needed a Bluetooth radio for it and purchased the new model of the Sony unit. I still love it. It has all the same functionality of the older unit but a new look. It sounds great and is easy to setup and use.
    Pros:
    Price. Sounds great.
    Cons:
Not as flashy as more expensive units. Display is simple LCD one color at a time (But you can change the color).

Works Great. User Interface and instruction manual are lousy

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Using with a Google Nexus 5 phone.

I don't have big requirements for sound but this was a big improvement over factory receiver in my Honda Fit. My primary interest was in getting a unit that will interface with my Bluetooth phone. This unit works well once the BT connection is established but every time seems to be an adventure! I cannot find a procedure that consistently produces a reliable BT connection. The manual is badly written and uses confusing wording and inconsistent terminology. I'm sure I can eventually find a way to simply start it up but it seems like something different happens every time. The Crutchfield rep warned me that the Sony user interface would be difficult when I bought it.

The "App Remote" android App is a great idea and works great once the connection is set up but it too suffers from some inconsistencies and bugs.

I haven't been able to find any decent support from Sony on their Web site.

Display brightness in daylight is horrible. Unusable without shading the unit.

Crutchfield was wonderful to work with during the installation. Smart, knowledgeable reps that gave direct, useful answers to the three or four calls I made.
    Pros:
    Sound, Bluetooth functionality and features
    Cons:
USER INTERFACE! Manual and Display Brightness Looks like a tennis shoe.

I'm 62 and was looking for a fairly simple radio/cd/mp3 player that worked well in my Monaco coach. This sounded like the one for me. So far it is working great, and better yet, I can operate it easily. The remote works well also.
    Pros:
    Works exactly as advertised
    Cons:
None yet. The sound quality would probably be better if I replaced the older ceiling speakers, but its good enough for my listening. Ease of use would have been 5 star, but it took a bit of reading the instructions to operate the system. I'm a guy and hate to read instructions.

    Absolute piece of crap

Thought this was going to be a great stereo but alas, it was not. App did not work well at all. Every time I tried to use it it prevented the keyboard on ANY app on Galaxy S4 from working. Called Sony and they shrugged their shoulders and said they never heard of the issue. Then, after a few weeks unit just died. Took a week to get a replacement and after a week it DIED TOO! Then, by some miracle it started working again 3 days later... Returning it and getting something else that actually works.

Excellent device for the price. I have the next version higher in another vehicle which I love so bought this one for upgrade over stock. My only complaint is searching artists, you scroll using numbers instead of artists name.
    Pros:
Sound, easy install, ease of use
    Cons:
    Search of artists

I was so impressed with this receiver that I bought a second one for another vehicle. It's not only a great receiver for the money, but it's a great receiver, period.
    Pros:
    Features, quality, sound, flexibility.
    Cons:
The Sony app is really worthless on an IOS device.

Great upgrade to get Bluetooth in my 2000 Z3

Surprisingly easy to install in my 2000 Z3. The sound seems better with the same speakers than the stock deck. It has front USB/Aux. I wish they where is the rear for a cleaner look. It has a CD drive, not sure I will ever use that.
    Pros:
Bluetooth USB connection Sound control (balance/fade/eq) from connected device Adjustable display color
    Cons:
The Sony android app could be better, it works pretty well but far from perfect.

    Great Stereo but...

Written By JimS, Chester Springs, PA on Friday, May 16, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installing the unit into my Jeep was easier than I expected, but there were two issues. First, it took a little while to understand that you need to bend the tabs on the outer frame to hold it into the mount, and second, the wire harness to the radio and the wire harness to the jeep are separate units and I needed to splice the 14 wires together - the colors do not exactly match, at least one of the wires had a stripe on one half, but not on it's match, and well - I'm color vision impaired which meant I had to have my wife double check my work, and finally there was one more wire on one half than the other.

I was happily surprised when I hooked up the unit and all four speakers were putting out good quality sound. I tested it with a moody Blues CD and it was very crisp.

A little disappointed that to pair my wife's IPOD via bluetooth, she first has to hook it up via the USB port - and it doesn't "Remember" the unit so she's had to do it every time. Once paired she can disconnect. Have not tried pairing to her android yet.

Regardless for the price, this is a great unit and the sound is good even though it's hooked up to the Jeep's original speakers. The multicolor lighted display is slick looking, and the little remote will keep my teenage son entertained while he drive's his mom crazy switching the channels from the back seat.
    Pros:
Great sound for the price, Tuner picks up more stations than the older radio. CD player sounds great.
    Cons:
need usb wire to pair bluetooth, wiring harness with more than a dozen connections needed to be spliced.
