Sony MDR-NC200D earcup

Press the "Artificial Intelligence" button, and the MDR-NC200D figures out the best type of noise cancellation for your environment.

A high-tech solution for tuning out distractions

Noise-canceling headphones have been popular for years, but here's a cool new twist from Sony that takes the concept a step further. They outfitted their MDR-NC200D headphones with three types of noise reduction — one noise-canceling mode each for airplanes, trains, and offices. You just press a button on the left earcup, and sophisticated digital processing analyzes the ambient sound in your environment and automatically selects the noise cancellation mode that gives you maximum peace and quiet.

Great sound and a comfortable fit

These 'phones use large 40mm drivers for clear, robust sound. Their lightweight on-ear design and soft padded earcups let you listen in comfort for hours, whether it's a cross-Atlantic flight or busy day at work. A handy monitor button turns off the noise cancellation when you want to have a brief conversation with a flight attendant taking your drink order or a coworker in the next cubicle. Plus, the MDR-NC200D folds up flat and tucks away neatly into its included travel case for easy portability.

Features

High-Quality Sound: High quality audio is yours with 40mm driver units, full digital amplification and a high performance digital equalizer delivering the highest highs and lowest lows for incredible-sounding music. Full, authentic sound is reproduced via full digital amplification in concert with a high performance digital equalizer that delivers ideal frequency response. Powerful 40MM driver units deliver wider frequency response and superb sound quality that can handle your loud powerful music or vocals.

Digital Noise Canceling Technology: Featuring Sony's advanced digital signal processing technology, ambient noise is reduced by up to 98.2% with the Sony MDR-NC200D premium digital noise canceling headphones.

Intelligent Auto-Selection: Not all ambient noise is the same. When you press the Artificial Intelligence (AI) button, the headphones will automatically select the optimal noise canceling mode (for airplane, bus/train, or office) based on intelligent analysis of environmental ambient noise. The AI button is located on Left ear-pad.

Passive Listening: The Sony MDR-NC200D allows audio listening even when the power is turned off. If you are listening in an already quiet environment, you can save the battery for later. Or should your battery run out mid-flight and you not have a spare, you'll still be able to listen without the noise canceling activated.

Comfortable Listening: The lightweight, super soft on-ear design allows for comfortable wearing over long periods of time. Ergonomically shaped flexible ear-pads and the adjustable headband also allow for a proper fit, making them a great companion on long flights.

Battery Powered: A single AAA battery (included) provides up to 22 hours of listening time. The battery is inserted into the Left ear-pad. The Power button is found on the Left ear-pad.

Detachable Headphone Cable: The Sony MDR-NC200D comes with a detachable 61" headphone cable terminated by a straight 3.5mm connector on one end (which plugs into the Left ear-pad) and a right-angle 3.5mm connector on other end (which plugs into your audio source). The 3.5mm connectors are gold-plated for excellent signal transfer.

Airplane Adapter: An airplane adaptor is included to use during your next flight.

Dual-Fold System w/ Travel Case: A new and unique folding system reduces the size of the headphones by nearly 40% when not in use, making them easier to transport. The Sony MDR-NC200D comes with a convenient travel case.

Great sounding headphones that only took 5 days to get to an APO address in Kuwait! I look forward to using them on my return flight as well as another flight to Japan in August.

Product reviews from the Crutchfield Labs

Effective noise-cancelation

Written by Ralph Graves, Staff Writer - Creative, on 8/16/2012 11:24:00 AM

I always think noise-canceling headphones have to be over-the-ear to be truly effective. After all, the ears have to be physcially sealed off from the noisy environment, right? Well, not really.

The MDR-NC200D on-hear headphnones pleasantly surprised me with how effectively they minimized the hubbub here in the Crutchfield Labs. Without any music playing, the coversations around me sounded muted, and when I fired up Pandora, they all but disappeared.

In our soundproofed A/V room I cranked up our test soundtracks up and donned the headphones. For both lawnmower and airplane cabin sounds, the MDR-NC200D's made a significant different. Were the sounds still there? Yes. But they were greatly reduced, which made them much more bearable.
