The brawn behind the beauty
You might be surprised when you first take a "peek under the hood" at the new Sony Alpha NEX-5N. While it looks nearly identical on the outside to its predecessor, the NEX-5, there are some pleasant surprises waiting upon deeper inspection. Let's start with the new touch interface: Now you can set a shutter speed or dial in an effect with the touch of a finger, rather than fiddling with a menu. This could come in handy in that ten seconds when your child's parade float drives by. And while the old automatic modes and scene presets are still with us, the NEX-5N has a wealth of manual settings and high-end options that are sure to delight the experienced enthusiast. A new 16.1-megapixel sensor will bring home low-noise shots you take using just the available light at that anniversary party or school assembly. And the 10 frame per second continuous shooting mode with uninterrupted auto-focus is truly professional-class performance.
High-quality HD video too
Neatly hidden within the NEX-5N's small form is a cutting-edge HD video camera that shoots at 1080 lines, 60 progressive frames per second. What do these numbers mean? Creamy-smooth, high-detail video, with the filmlike look that only a large image sensor can provide. You'll get impressive low-light performance, and the great sense of depth that comes from a camera with a still-photography pedigree.
This camera comes bundled with a versatile, day-in, day-out 18-55mm zoom lens that's perfect for the challenges of everyday shooting. With an approximate 3X zoom range, this lens will do nicely for portraits, and still be wide enough to fit the gang from work into the company picnic group shot. The zoom is quiet and efficient, helping you to compose a dynamic shot on the fly.
Could it be... super?
This camera may look like Clark Kent on the outside, but wait 'til it steps into the phone booth. The incredibly compact and convenient form factor of the NEX series has been infused with the capabilities of its bigger DSLR brethren, and the photography world is taking notice. You've now got a camera that performs like a large model at the top end of the product line, while fitting (lens and all) neatly in a purse or small messenger bag. Up, up, and away.
These digital cameras combine the creative options of a DSLR with portability that's more like that of a point-and-shoot. Their automatic modes will help you take striking pictures from day one without having to be an expert. However, like DSLRs, mirrorless cameras have interchangeable lenses, and advanced control and processing. You can explore these features for even better results as you take time to learn more about the hobby. Cameras in this class have large image sensors for beautifully detailed pictures, but their mirrorless design means the camera bodies and matching lenses can be smaller, lighter, and more portable great for snapping memorable pics when you're on the move.
Camera was great right out of the box.
I'm no pro just upgrading from an 8 MP Sony 16x zoom camera. Images are great and when I take pictures of my two dogs I can enlarge the image and see individual hairs on their faces.
Some reviews say that they have clicking noises when they do video but haven't had that problem. Friends are so impressed with the videos that I've taken.
I was choosing between getting the nex5N or a comparable SLR but the portability against lugging around a big camera was a big reason I chose the Nex5N. Also didn't find anything too different between the Nex5N and 5R
Pros: Great images, videos. Touch screen. Portable.
Cons: None yet.
This was my first order with Crutchfield. Ordered one day, received the next. I had no trouble understanding how to operate this camera as I had downloaded the manuals for it and several others I was interested in and when I chose this one read it through ahead of time. The most amazing thing about this camera is the clarity of shots at speeds so low I would not have attempted them before with my olders dslr's or p&S cameras. The battery was completely dead when I received it, so had to wait until later to test it. All I had to test the camera on was several slightly uncooperative cats and the fireplace across the room. Many of the shots are blurry because the shutter speed was arount 1/8 to 1/10 of a second and the cats were moving, but the backgrounds are clear and I even took several HDR shots that were great. I am totally happy with this camera and will work on ordering more lenses and the evf for it next year. Last Sunday was clear and sunny so we went to the James River and got some really fantastic panoramas. I have tested every shooting mode am pretty happy with each one. We are getting on in age and I broke my arm this summer running with my huge, heavy camera bag and tripod and now everything can fit into a small lightweight bag that can also double as a handbag. I could not find a NEX to test in Richmond and I was undecided for months between this and the SLT-57. I am 100% satisfied now, the images are fantastic and that's what taking photos is all about.
Pros: small size, ability to EASILY take photos with one hand, touch screen easy to use, excellent image quality, "steady shot" works great for hand held shots in low light, handheld hdr, flash fine with 18-55 for most shots
Cons: battery dead on arrival, bracketing not included in drive mode but hidden in a menu, lcd slightly hard to see on a very sunny day, poor user guide
If DSLR picture quality in a more compact form is what you are looking for, then this camera will definitely supply that. It is also very easy to use. I'm not an auto user with my T3i, but I am with this as I can hand it to others and still get great shots. The T3i hit rate is a little lower, but I expect that. It's made for you to tweak things. I had the C3 and the argument for the 5N over the C3 is preference. Is the quieter shutter, 1080p, better feel in the hand (to me), longer battery life, and built-in lens compensations worth it to you. I REALLY liked the C3. I like the 5N just enough better to pay extra for it. Neither will replace your basic DSLR, but you will find that you are far more willing to tote it around. I still use my DSLR, but it is great having a smaller option. This camera will fit in the diaper bag with no problem....my best camera (T3i), not so much.
I really like the look and feel of the NEX5n and had high hopes that it would live up to the rave reviews from all over. However I am rather disappointed. Maybe it's the kit lens but images are a bit soft. Many have praised the lack of noise in low light images but I see plenty. Also in low light situations the LCD screen becomes so noisy itself it's almost useless. This is my first experience with this type of camera so maybe I was expecting too much but have seen better results from lesser cameras. The overpriced electronic viewfinder is also very disappointing despite many reviews to contrary.
Pros: Very light. Looks cool.
Cons: Poor image quality.

Focus Lock: If a subject is off-center and outside of the AF area, you can lock the focus of the camera.
AF Illuminator: When you press the shutter button halfway down a red illuminator is emitted until the focus is locked. Under dark lighting conditions or when you shoot a low contrast subject, the AF illuminator allows the camera to focus more easily on the subject.
Drive Modes: The camera offers the following shooting modes:
Exposure Modes: The camera offers the following exposure modes:
Exposure Compensation: Exposure compensation is used to alter the camera's standard exposure setting. You can make the image look lighter (increased exposure) or darker (decreased exposure). The exposure compensation amount can be set up to +/-3 EV in 1/3-step increments.
AE Lock: You can fix the exposure before deciding on the composition when taking a picture. This is effective when the metering object and focusing object are different or when you want to shoot continuously while keep the same exposure value.

Flash: In a dark location, using the supplied HVL-F7S flash allows you to shoot the subject brightly, and it also helps prevent blurred photos due to camera shake. The NEX-5N features a special multi-pin jack for attaching the flash. When attached, you can turn the flash on or off by raising or lowering the flash head. When the flash is attached, it adds approximately 1/2" to the overall height of the camera, and adds 1-1/4" when raised. The NEX-5N offers the following flash modes:
