Sony

Our take on the Sony NV-U70

Sony's NV-U70 portable navigation system provides you powerful, accurate guidance wherever you're going, along with a host of user-friendly features.

The NV-U70 comes preloaded with detailed street maps of the 48 contiguous United States. You'll find maps of Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, and Puerto Rico on the included DVD-ROM; you simply upload them on the NV-U70 from your computer via the included USB cable.

You'll find the vivid, 3.5" screen easy to read, even in bright sunlight. It shows you exactly where you are, tells you what your next move is going to be, and helps you find local services in unfamiliar towns. To choose a destination, you simply use the touchscreen controls to select a street address, intersection, or one of the millions of points of interest, like restaurants, hotels, and more.

If you miss a turn, the NV-U70 will recalculate your route automatically. If you come up on a traffic jam, hit the "Block Road" command on the touchscreen, and the NV-U70 will find you a new route. For easy viewing, a light sensor automatically switches the screen from day to night mode when the sun goes down. And pressing the "Take Me Home" button tells the system to find the best route back to your home from your current location.

You'll hear all guidance commands loud and clear — they're delivered over the NV-U70's front-panel speakers, which are enhanced by a 1.6" woofer. A suction-cup windshield bracket lets you mount the NV-U70 securely on your windshield. It comes with a car power adapter, and also features a built-in rechargeable battery for up to 4 hours of continuous operation.

Features

Product Overview: The Sony NV-U70 is a compact, portable automotive navigation unit with a 12 parallel channel GPS receiver. It continually tracks and uses up to 12 satellites to compute and update your position every second. With the pre-loaded map software the Sony NV-U70 can automatically calculate a route and provide turn-by-turn directions and voice prompts.

Maps: The Sony NV-U70 comes pre-loaded with maps of the contiguous United States, including Washington DC. They contain detailed road maps and approximately 1.6 million Points of Interest (POIs); such as hotels, restaurants, gas stations, attractions, and ATMs. The included DVD-ROM includes maps of Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, and Puerto Rico that you can load into the NV-U70 if needed.

GPS Accuracy: This unit's GPS positioning capability is accurate to approximately 9 feet.

Touch-screen  Display: The unit features a bright, 3.5" (diagonal) LCD with touch-screen  controls. This screen has an anti-glare/finger print resistant coating. The display has a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels and an aspect ratio of 4:3. The horizontal and vertical viewing angles are +/-80 degrees.

Menu:

  • New Destination: enter a destination
  • Search Nearby: find a POI close by
  • Route: show the entire route, simulate the route, or block a section of the route (detour)
  • Muting: mute or un-mute the speaker
  • Settings: volume, brightness, route options, display mode, language, items displayed, etc

Destination: During navigation you can search for places several ways:

  • Address: allows you to enter a specific address or intersection as your destination

  • Home: allows you to store and recall your home address as a destination

  • Points of Interest (POI): search for points of interest near your current location, in a specific city, or nationwide, POI categories include:

    • Gas stations

    • Parking

    • Restaurants

    • Accommodations

    • Shopping

    • Tourism

    • Garages

    • Car rental

    • Airports

    • Public transportation

    • Banks

    • Sports

    • Schools

    • Civil services

    • Health care

    • Enterprises

  • Select on map: select directly on the touch-screen map display

  • Recent Destinations: return to recent destinations

  • Favorites: store your favorite locations

Block: When blocking a section of the route, choose the amount (distance) you want to detour around; 600 ft, 1600 ft, 0.6 mi, 1.2 mi, 3.1 mi, 6 mi, 12 mi, or 31 mi. The NV-U70 then calculates a new route to your destination around the blocked section.

Text-to-Speech: This unit's Text-to-Speech feature gives you audible prompts of street names, so you can keep your eyes on the road. The unit can also "speak" route navigation messages; such as "drive two miles and turn right onto Main Street."

Repeat: Press the left button on top of the unit to repeat the last voice command.

Map Display Information:

  • Indicates real-time moving map illustrating your current position and intended route
  • Shows geographic details such as lakes, rivers, highways and towns
  • Allows you to zoom and pan using the touch-screen controls
  • The road you're currently on the the next road you'll turn onto are displayed
  • Your arrival time and distance to your destination are displayed in the lower right corner
  • The distance to and direction of the next turn are shown in an inset box on the left side, if two turns are close together, the direction of both are displayed
  • Your speed, altitude, and an arrow pointing north are displayed in an inset box on the left side
  • If available, signpost information can be displayed

Routing Options: In the settings menu you can program the unit to follow your preferred type of route:

  • Fastest/Shortest: follow the shortest route to your destination, or the fastest route, based on speed limits
  • Interstates: yes to use interstates or no to avoid interstates
  • Tollways: yes to use tollways or no to avoid tollways
  • Ferries: yes to use ferries or no to avoid ferries

Itinerary with Stages: Itineraries can be created with multiple stages (destinations). An itinerary can be created without access to GPS satellites. Once created the itinerary is named and can be recalled later. Additional stages can be added at any time; if an interim destination is added during navigation, the route is recalculated immediately.

Map Orientation: You can select one of four map orientation displays:

  • 3D with Auto-zoom: three-dimensional map, auto-zoom adjusts the scale of the map display; at slow speeds the scale is small, at higher speeds the scale is larger
  • 3D with no Auto-zoom: three-dimensional map, the scale is not adjusted automatically
  • 2D with Auto-zoom: two-dimensional map, auto-zoom adjusts the scale of the map display; at slow speeds the scale is small, at higher speeds the scale is larger, in 2D the amount of auto-zoom is adjustable; low, standard, high, and no auto-zoom
  • 2D with no Auto-zoom: two-dimensional map, the scale is not adjusted automatically, the display can be switched from current direction up (at top of screen) to north up

Screen Mode: A light sensor automatically changes the display from day to night mode based on the amount of ambient light. The sensitivity of the sensor is adjustable, as is the brightness of both the day and night modes.

GPS Button: Pressing the GPS button displays your current position (street/state), longitude and latitude, the current time (GMT), your current speed, the number of satellites in view, and the HDOP (Horizontal Dilution Of Precision-a degree of positioning accuracy). From this screen you can save your current location as a favorite and name it.

Indoor Use: When indoors, you can activate the built-in simulator for routes of 60 miles or less. This turns off the GPS receiver so it's not searching for satellites.

Power Requirements: The Sony NV-U70 operates on your vehicle's battery using the included 12-volt cigarette lighter power adapter or the built-in Lithium-Ion battery. The Lithium-Ion battery provides up to 4 hours of use. The battery can be charged using the 12-volt adapter or the included AC adapter. Stored data, such as itineraries or unit settings, are not lost when the unit is disconnected from a power source.

Antenna: The built-in antenna is located in the unit's top panel. The optional VCA-41 external antenna may be needed when operating the unit behind a coated windshield or an in-screen heating system which can block the GPS signal.

Mounting Options: The unit should be securely installed when used in a vehicle. The unit comes with a mounting bracket that includes a suction cup. The suction cup can be used to mount the unit to the windshield or to the dash (using the Dash Mounting Plate). Once the Sony NV-U70 is mounted, it can be tilted forward or backward and rotated for best visibility.

Note: If you're not using a remote antenna, the unit must be installed where it has a relatively unobstructed view of the sky.

Interface Capability: This unit can be connected to a PC via the supplied USB cable. This interface allows you to download additional map information to the unit's flash memory.

Inputs and Outputs

Right Side:

  • USB: USB Mini-B Type 2.0 that allows you to connect the Sony NV-U70 to a computer using the supplied USB cable
  • DC Input: The AC or DC power supply can be connected directly to the unit

  • Cradle Connector: proprietary jack that connects to the supplied mounting cradle
  • Antenna: connector for an optional external GPS antenna

The Sony Nav works great. It's accurate and portable. Traveled to Pismo Beach from Sacramento and didn't missed a turn. First time using a nav system and really impressed with the unit. The LCD screen is bright enough as well as the size.

Speedy reliable GPS

Written By Alan, Lafayette, LA on Sunday, July 16, 2006

I had a week of driving in New Jersey, NYC and Boston with this new one. This system was excellent by its: 1) Fully installed U.S. map(not Canada). No need to download anymore.
2)Turn on and ready to drive unit. Truly...
3) Good quality loud female voice
4)Fast rerouting. Does rerouting in 2 - 3 seconds.
5) Very accurate GPS.
6) Touch screen
7) Slim(not as slim as Garmin nuvi 350 though.: Just looks like smaller cute version of SONY television. 8) Reliable long lasting Li-ion battery: really lasts 3-4 hours continuous usage. Has internal replaceable rechargeable battery.
9) Easy mounting, which is actually 'cradle'.

Cons:

1) No navigation buttons - Only touch screen. This is why I bought this unit instead of others with big buttons. But, as a matter of fact, it was not easy to do every keyboard job with touch screen only. For instance, I had hard time scrolling down the lists of favorite waypoints I stored each time I navigate.

2) Limited memory to 1 GB. Only 100 MB remaining space to store data - favorite, route etc. Only U.S. map could be pre-installed. If you need to travel outside of U.S, you need to delete 1/3 of U.S. map.

3)Map is not up to date. There's no map upgrade/update possible yet.

4)It took too long for initialization of signal (up to 15 minutes, even more than that) upon flying to other area of U.S. As I turned on arrival to NYC, it was not working

Crutchfield Customer Review

The reviewer purchased this item from us, verified by the email address on the order.

I used this Sony Navigation Unit on a 3,000 mile road trip to Mt. Ranier National Park/Mt St Helens National Monument in Washington State. Once I got familiar with the procedures for entering information found in the manual the unit did the rest. Its performance was nearly flawless. The directions were clear and easy to execute and the helpful direction screens and disappearing bar graph showing when to turn kept my party on course. When I went on my own instinct the unit would redirect me back on the original course. Also, as I continued on my own course, the unit would provide detailed instructions if I came close to a major road taking me to my destination. At Mt Ranier National Park the unit took me to the main entry point. I decided to go on my own to an alternate entry point not computed by the unit. It tried to redirect me but eventually gave me bogus directions so I continued using road signs and the unit responded with accurate directions to the alternate entry point. The CONUS map uses up all but 1 megabite of storage but you can save favorite locations. You can click on a favorite location and the unit will compute a route from wherever you are to the destination. So on my way back home I clicked on previously saved routes to back track home. I accidentally deleted the CONUS map which comes preloaded so it took over 5 hours to reload it from my Sony Notebook via CDR. There is a great website to get information on problems but remember to plug the AC cord into the unit and wall outlet or else youll never get the unit to connect. It would be nice to update the maps from the website in the future. Its a great buy and useful tool. Also, its portable!
