About the Sony NW-ZX100HN Walkman®
High-performance audio
High-performance audio
Are you serious about high-resolution music? So is the Sony NW-ZX100HN Walkman. This rugged portable player features a high-resolution digital-to-analog converter and sophisticated electronics for playing high-res files in their native resolution for exceptionally detailed and accurate sound. (You can download high-res tunes from sites like HDtracks).
The NW-ZX100HN comes with its own set of noise-canceling earbuds.
Support for high-resolution audio files
The NW-ZX100HN is compatible with high-res DSD files (up to 5.6MHz), PCM-based files (up to 24-bit/192kHz), Apple Lossless, and other formats. And if you've got low-resolution files, such as MP3s, Sony's Digital Sound Enhancement Engine can help them sound fuller. And the player comes with its own noise-canceling earbuds, so you can focus on the music, not the noise around you.
Outstanding build quality
It starts with the player's high-rigidity aluminum frame. It's lightweight yet durable enough to protect the electronics inside. The low dielectric board insulates the circuitry from performance-hampering electromagnetic interference and reduces energy loss. And Sony's use of high-quality, low-lead solder improves sound throughout the frequency range. The NW-ZX100HN can deliver up to 70 hours of playback from its built-in rechargeable battery.
Ample storage for high-res files
The 'ZX100HN features 128GB of built-in storage — enough for 2700 CD-resolution songs. Need more memory? The player's microSD card slot can accommodate up to a 128GB card. That gives you up to 256GB of storage, plenty for high-resolution files as well as CD-quality files and compressed formats like MP3. And of course, you can carry extra cards with you for an even bigger music library.
High-res Bluetooth® streaming
This player offers LDAC Hi-Fidelity wireless music streaming to compatible products. That means you're streaming a high-quality, richly detailed signal to your favorite Bluetooth speaker.

Product Research
Features
Overview: The Sony NW-ZX100HN is a Hi-Res Walkman digital music player, capable of playing high-resolution audio files. It also has Bluetooth Audio Streaming with NFC technology. The unit features a 3" LCD screen, and an internal 128 GB flash memory. You can add even more memory by inserting a microSD.
Noise-Canceling Headphones: The NW-ZX100HN comes with a pair of MDR-NW750N noise-canceling in-ear headphones. The headphones feature 9mm drivers for dynamic sound. The noise-canceling function reduces ambient sound so you hear only the music. Three sizes of ear tips are supplied with the headphones to help you find the best fit.
Supported Audio Formats: The NW-ZX100HN Hi-Res Walkman can support multiple digital audio formats, from CD-quality (16-bit/44kHz) through sound that is 6 times the resolution of CDs (24-bit/192kHz):
MP3 | 32-320 kbps (incl. VBR) at 32, 44.1, and 48 kHz |
---|---|
WMA | 32-192 kbps (incl. VBR) at 44.1 kHz |
FLAC | 16/24-bit at 8, 11.025, 12, 16, 22.05, 24, 32, 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4, and 192 kHz |

Build Quality: The NW-ZX100HN features supreme build quality with a 3" TFT WQVGA color display (400 x 240 pixels) with white LED backlighting. It is constructed with a rigid aluminum frame to keep the circuit boards secure, preventing noise and distortion. The circuits and components are attached to the circuit board with a Sony-developed high-quality solder for a purer signal path. The S-Master HX digital amplifier is optimized for high-resolution audio playback, delivering smooth, natural sound over a wide 20Hz-40kHz frequency range.
DSEE-HX: Sony has included their DSEE-HX "up-scaling" technology in the NW-ZX100HN. DSEE-HX uses an algorithm to analyze the music, and automatically replace the "lost" information. DSEE-HX (Digital Sound Enhancement Engine) gives your highly-compressed MP3 and AAC music files new life so they sound almost as good as true Hi-Res Audio quality.
Memory: The NW-ZX100HN has a 128 GB internal memory, which is enough for about 20,000 MP3 songs (128 kbps), 15,700 AAC songs (256 kbps), 430 high-resolution tracks (FLAC 192kHz/24-bit), or 350 DSD songs (DSD 5.6448 MHz). The unit's memory card slot will also accept microSD cards up to 128 GB for even more memory capacity.
Bluetooth/NFC: With built-in Bluetooth 3.0, you can stream your music files wirelessly from compatible devices up to 30 feet away. Devices that have the NFC (Near-Field Communication) function, can be automatically turned on, and paired with the Walkman, by simply touching the back of the Walkman to the device on the NFC logo.
Sound Quality Settings: You can adjust the sound quality with the following selectable functions:
- Equalizer: You can set the sound quality according to the music genre.
- Virtualphones Technology (VPT): Virtualphones Technology, a proprietary sound processing technology, developed by Sony, lets you set sound effects and enrich the sound reproduction quality of the audio playback.
- Clear Stereo: Using digital processing, Clear Stereo emphasizes the stereo effect and clearly distinguishes between sound from the left and right channels of the headphones. (Not available with a Bluetooth connection.)
- ClearAudio+: When ClearAudio+ is selected, the Equalizer, VPT, and Clear Stereo functions are disabled, and you hear the pure signal from the music source.
Rechargeable Battery: The Walkman has a built-in Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery for exceptional stamina. After a 5-hour full recharging time (via USB connection), the unit's estimated battery life is as follows:
Noise Cancel On | Noise Cancel Off | |
---|---|---|
MP3 128 kbps | 60 hours | 70 hours |
AAC 256 kbps | 55 hours | 65 hours |
FLAC 96kHz/24-bit | 50 hours | 55 hours |
FLAC 192kHz/24-bit | 40 hours | 45 hours |
DSD 2.8224 MHz/1-bit | 29 hours | 31 hours |
DSD 5.6448 MHz/1-bit | 24 hours | 26 hours |
MP3 w/Bluetooth | 45 hours | |
FLAC w/Bluetooth | 28 hours |
Connections/System Requirements: On the bottom of the unit, there is a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a 22-pin WM-PORT for connecting the unit to a computer using the supplied USB cable. The NW-ZX100HN is compatible with computers with the following operating systems: Windows Vista (SP2 or later), Windows 7 (SP1 or later), Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, and Mac OS X v10.6 or later. You can use the WM-PORT to connect the unit to one of Sony's Headphone DAC/Amplifiers, such as the PHA-3.
