A great performer just got even better

The experts at Sony keep packing more and more picture-taking performance into compact camera designs. The incredible DSC-RX1R II improves upon what we think was already one of the best cameras available anywhere, period. Like its predecessor, it features a powerful, full-frame image sensor, a razor-sharp Zeiss Sonnar lens, and a beautifully crafted magnesium alloy body — plus some significant new upgrades.

The incredible DSC-RX1R II improves upon what we think was already one of the best cameras available anywhere, period. Sony RX1R II compact full-frame camera

What's new with the RX1R II?

The first thing Sony did was to give the DSC-RX1R II an ultra-high-res, 42.4-megapixel full-frame sensor capable of capturing exquisitely detailed images. With this much resolution, you can use the camera's digital zoom to get closer to your subjects and still have plenty of detail. Or you can seriously crop your shots after the fact and retain smooth grain-free image quality.

Then, they added the world's first variable optical low-pass (anti-aliasing) filter. This unique filter system lets you choose from three settings to control the level of detail reaching the sensor. Select "Off" to capture unfiltered light directly from the lens, so that even the finest details are sharply defined. Choose "Hi" to eliminate moiré and color artifacts that can occur when shooting certain woven fabrics or geometric architectural patterns like brickwork. Or use the "Standard" mode to strike an even balance between the other two settings.

If that wasn't enough, Sony has introduced an entirely new autofoucus system. It's 30% faster than its predecessor, with wider area coverage and greater accuracy for capturing precisely focused photos without missing a single moment. A built-in, pop-up OLED electronic viewfinder makes it easier to frame shots outdoors when the sun's at your back. The new 3" LCD screen tilts up or down for extended shooting flexibility from high and low angles. Plus, built-in Wi-Fi with NFC (Near Field Communication) allows easy pairing with a smartphone or tablet for remote control and easy file transfer.

Brilliant low-light performance

The RX1R II's fixed f/2 lens is bright enough for shooting in almost any lighting. So even when the lights are dimmed or the sun is setting, rest assured you'll still capture vivid portraits and stunning landscapes. The full-frame Exmor R® CMOS sensor offers incredible sensitivity for stellar performance in poorly lit settings, with selectable ISO from 100 to 25,600. The camera's exposure controls also include a manual ring to adjust the aperture's nine-blade iris to create smooth background defocus for outstanding portraits and close-up shots.

The compact DSC-RX1R II features a 42.4-megapixel full-frame sensor, historically found only in larger SLRs.

Manual and auto focus options

If you're preparing to shoot your child's birthday party, you'll no doubt be prepared for the big shots before they happen. The RX1R II's manual focus ring lets you dial in your daughter when she's ready to blow out the candles, with customizable focus assist peaking to highlight focused edges as you frame the shot. But sometimes you don't have time for total artistic control. That's when the RX1R II's high-speed auto focus serves you best, so you'll be ready for quick shooting when your son suddenly takes those first steps. You can even combine auto and manual focus, using auto mode to focus in on the subject before switching to the manual control ring for creative fine-tuning. Continuous autofocus can track moving subjects, perfect for firing off a burst of five frames per second at this powerful camera's full resolution.

Recording Features

Overview: The Sony DSC-RX1R Mark II, like its predecessor, the RX1R, is a compact digital camera with high-end features. It has a 35mm full frame image sensor, now with 42.4 megapixels, and a bright F2.0 Carl Zeiss 35mm fixed focal length lens. The BIONZ image processor allows you to take full resolution photos at up to 5 frames per second.

Full Frame Image Sensor: The DSC-RX1R Mark II features a 35mm full-frame Exmor CMOS image sensor (35.9 x 24.0mm). It has approximately 43.6-million total pixels and 42.4-million effective pixels.

Optical Variable Low-pass Filter: The RX1R II is the first digital camera to have an optical variable low-pass filter that lets you choose from three filter effect settings: Off (to prioritize image resolution), Hi (to reduce moiré and color artifacts), and Standard (to balance these priorities. These options allow you to take full advantage of the high resolution image quality of the 42.4-megapixel image sensor.

Carl Zeiss Lens: The camera is equipped with a Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* (T-star) 35mm F2.0 lens. This large-diameter lens has a 9-blade diaphragm that delivers beautiful foreground/background defocusing (bokeh). The multi-layered T* coating dramatically reduces ghosting and flare, caused by reflecting light. A macro switching ring on the lens barrel lets you shorten the minimum focusing distance from 12" to 7-7/8".

Tiltable 3" LCD Monitor: The RX1R II uses a 3" Xtra Fine LCD monitor with 1,228,800 dots. You can easily scroll through menus and preview live Picture Effects. WhiteMagic technology increases visibility in bright daylight. The large display delivers brilliant still images and movies, and lets you obtain sharp focus. The LCD monitor can be tilted up approximately 109° for low-angle shooting, or tilted down approximately 41° for high-angle shots.

Retractable OLED TruFinder: The camera features a pop-up 0.39" OLED electronic viewfinder with 2,359,296 dots. It features automatic or manual brightness control, 100% field coverage and approximately 0.74x magnification. The diopter adjustment lets you adjust the viewfinder to your eyesight. The viewfinder can be manually raised or lowered whenever you want, and includes an attachable rubber eyecup for more comfort.

Zoom Options: The DSC-RX1R Mark II has a fixed focal length lens, not a zoom lens. However, there are some zoom options:

  • Smart Zoom: Smart Zoom lets you zoom in on your subject without deteriorating the original quality of the image by partially cropping the images. You can perform this only when the image size is Medium or Small. Zoom range is 1.5x (medium) and 2x (small) at 3:2 aspect ratio.
  • Clear Image Zoom: Clear Image Zoom lets you zoom beyond the range of Smart Zoom by magnifying the image. The image quality does not deteriorate significantly. Zoom range is 2x (large), 3.1x (medium), and 4x (small).
  • Digital Zoom: The Digital Zoom exceeds the range of Clear Image Zoom, and magnifies the image to the largest scale. There is some deterioration of the image quality using Digital Zoom. Zoom range is 4x (large), 6.2x (medium), and 8x (small).

Display Options: You can choose how much information appears in the viewfinder and LCD monitor. There are five options: Graphic Display, Display all information, No display information, Digital Level Gauge, and Histogram. The digital level gauge indicates whether the camera is level in both horizontal and front-to-back directions. The indicators turn green when the camera is level in one of the directions. The histogram displays the luminance distribution that shows how many pixels of a particular brightness exist in the picture.

Live View: The RX1R II's Live View displays the effect of a function, such as exposure compensation, on the screen before you shoot.

Lens Ring Controls: The lens has three manual control rings that allow you to make adjustments without taking your eye off the subject. You can manually set the aperture between F2.0 and F22 in 1/3-stop increments with the inner (aperture) ring, set the macro function with the middle ring, and manually adjust focus with the outer ring.

Custom Buttons: In the menu, you can assign a frequently-used function to the top-mounted Custom button (C1) and the rear-mounted Custom button (C2). There are approximately 50 functions and settings to choose from, including Image Size, Aspect Ratio, Image Quality, Metering Mode, ISO, White Balance, and many shooting and playback functions.

Control Dial: The Control Dial on the back panel can be used for multiple functions, depending upon the set mode. You can choose from ISO, White Balance, Creative Style, and Picture Effect. The settings of the chosen mode can be selected by rotating the control dial. Furthermore, the left, right, down, and center buttons of the control dial can also be customized.

Quick Navi Screen: The Quick Navi Screen enhances control of your favorite functions by displaying camera settings on the same screen, and allowing you to adjust them without having to search for dedicated menus.

Still Image Recording Formats: Still images are recorded in JPEG file format in Standard, Fine, and Extra Fine compression rates. You can choose to shoot in a choice of aspect ratio, and in large, medium, and small image sizes. You can also record still images using the RAW format, which is uncompressed with no processing performed in the camera. RAW images must be transferred to a computer for processing, editing, and printing using Sony's Image Data Converter software. You can select the following image sizes and aspect ratios:

  3:2 16:9 4:3 1:1

Panoramic Photos: The Sweep Panorama mode lets you record panoramic images by holding down the shutter button as you pan across the scene. You can sweep left-to-right, right-to-left, top-to-bottom, or bottom-to-top. Panoramic photos can be taken in several different resolution settings:

  • Up / Down Panorama:
    • Standard: 3872 x 2160 (8.4M)
    • Wide: 5536 x 2160 (12M)
  • Left / Right Panorama:
    • Standard: 8192 x 1856 (15M)
    • Wide: 12416 x 1856 (23M)

Movie Recording Formats: The RX1R II can record 16:9 Full High Definition movies in XAVC S 1.0, AVCHD 2.0, and MP4 formats. Video is recorded in MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 in all three formats, while audio is recorded in 2-channel 48kHz/16-bit LPCM (XAVC S), Dolby Digital (AVCHD), or AAC (MP4). You can select from the following bit rates/image quality:
