Talk about feature-packed and wallet-friendly! Sony's CDX-S2210 CD receiver gives you MP3 playback and system-building flexibility — all wrapped up in a smart-looking package that rolls in for under $140.

The internal amplifier (17 watts RMS x 4) provides clean, crisp reproduction, while the EQ3 sound shaping lets you tailor the output to fit your car. Building a system? A set of preamp outputs can be switched from full-range to low-pass mode to make it easier when you connect an external amplifier or powered subwoofer. Best of all, when you select sub mode, you get a low-pass filter and subwoofer level control for adjusting your bass.

And, thanks to Sony's CONNECT online music store, you'll never have to worry about running out of entertainment options, either. Just choose from the over 650,000 songs available at the store, buy the ones you want, and the receiver will play them back right from your burned CD-R/CD-RW. There's no need to worry about file formats — the CDX-S2210 can handle both MP3 and Sony's ATRAC3plus.

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Sony CD deck

Written By RMS, Dearborn, MI on Friday, December 02, 2005

Excellent overall value. I bought this as a replacement for the factory stereo in my 97 T Bird. As this is an old second car we just use for running around town, etc. I decided to go with a low priced deck. I was pleasantly surprised with the sound this unit produces. Much cleaner, louder and crisper sound from the factory speakers. Sounds like I added new speakers too, but I didn't. The power antenna connection works great. MP3 feature is excellent. Only issue is the display screen is way too bright at night. The old radio display dimmed with the dash panel. This deck is a great value and I recommend it.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am really pleased with this Sony receiver/CD player. It's sleek, looks good in my dash, and has a great user interface. Good bang for the buck. I even purchased this stereo twice because I liked it so much - some creep stole my first one.

Attractive design, easy to use, like the blue illumination, sub outputs a plus, but man this thing skips on bumps.

Good deal for the price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great receiver for the money. It makes the factory speakers sound crisp and clear. Crutchfield makes it easy to install with the directions, installation kit and wire harness that are included. The only thing I don't like about the receiver is it seems not to pull in the FM stations as strong as the factory receiver. That is why I gave it 4 stars.

Great receiver for the price!!

I have many Sony products at home and love sony sound and quality. I was suprised at the clarity! 120db!! WOW!
! I got this for my '96 Saturn SL2 and its so much louder and crisper sound. All the specs match up to be one of the best sounding receivers from Crutchfield. Crutchfield has helped me to learn more about audio and video. That goes to show you that you could know next to nothing about audio/video and ask or visit Crutchfield and soon you'll be an expert! THANKS CRUTCHFIELD!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking to change out the factory unit and like most of you; I wanted a quality unit at a good price. I am VERY pleased with this unit and Crutchfield. The installation was simple once I got past the fear of taking out the factory unit. All in all it took about 20 min and I must admit, the step by step directions Crutchfild gives you are GREAT! The unit sounds good and is MUCH more powerful than the factory unit. I just ordered a set of new speakers (a set of two Pioneer 3 ways)and I am sure it will make my ride sound even better! Bottom line, ya can't beat the price, the shipping was quick and the level of service that Crutchfield provides is OUTSTANDING!

A few of the people who reviewed this item had concerns about the brightness of the display, which is quite bright. They are 100% roght about that. However, I was able to adjust the brightness with the dimmer setting. Not sure about the others, but it was dim enough for my taste.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just installed this product in my car. I am surprised with its easy installation without any hasitation. My car sounds way better than before it use to. The only down side of this is that the headunits light is pretty bright, but overall result comes out to be very success with perfect amount of money.

Good unit for the money

Not at all surprised with the quality of a Sony product. Overall very good and simple to operate. Install was clean and easy. Looks as good as it operates. Easy to fine tune and adjust. A bit disappointed with the some what loose fit at the left side of the removable face, very good for the money.

Great sound but difficult for fat fingers!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was my first after market car receiver purchase. I am really immpressed with the sound quality from this unit. I purchased it for the mp3 playing capacity and the low price. it is plenty of power for my small truck. It seems that my factory speakers are sounding better now. The biggest draw back for me are the small buttons. I have big fingers and it is taking me a bit of practice to not push 2 buttons at a time. The look of this unit in my truck is very good. I also want commend the crutchfield installation instructions. I have never installed one before and it was really easy with these instructions!!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is an excellent deck for the price, very clean sound and no distortion using factory speakers. The highs and mid range are very clear. I especially like the read out to tell you what track you're listening too. I also ran an mp3 disc in it with 120 songs, and it had no problem. The only negatives I noticed was that the bass, even turned up to max is some what weak; maybe thats what the amp outs are for. Also radio reception suprisingly, is not as strong as the orignial factory radio. Also it would have been nice to have a dimmer connection. When I dim my dash lights the deck remains very bright, although it as a manual dim mode, it is somewhat tedious to access.

Product Research

Drive S: The CDX-S2210 features the Drive S chassis platform. Drive S includes the CD mechanism, audio stages, 12 V power supply, and tuner section. The CD mechanism includes an improved suspension to resist shocks, a new motor that draws less power, and a fast new low-current pickup that improves durability and CD playback accuracy. The 52W x 4 S-MOSFET Power IC produces clearer, more accurate sound, less distortion, and a higher signal-to-noise ratio than previous designs.

ATRAC CD Playback: The CDX-S2210 plays ATRAC3plus/ATRAC3 files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. Each ATRAC disc can have a maximum of 255 groups and 999 files.

MP3 Playback: This unit can play MP3 files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. Each disc should have a maximum of 150 folders and 300 files/folders. During MP3 playback, the unit displays any recorded ID3 Tag information.

EQ3: You may select one of the following EQ presets: Xplod, Vocal, Club, Jazz, New Age, Rock, or Custom. For each preset, you can adjust the following frequencies: 60 Hz (Low), 1 kHz (Mid), and 10 kHz (High). The level of each frequency can be adjusted from +10 dB to -10 dB in 1 dB increments.

Best Tuning Memory (BTM): This feature selects stations with the strongest signals within the selected band and stores them in order of their frequency.

Rear/Subwoofer Preamp Outputs: The CDX-S2210 has a set of preamp outputs that can be set for Rear or Subwoofer output. When Subwoofer is selected, the outputs have a selectable low-pass filter (78 Hz, 125 Hz, or Off) and the output level is user-adjustable.

45-Degree Installation: For flexibility of installation, this unit can be mounted between 0 (horizontal) and 45 degrees.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: Pressing the Off button once will turn off audio output, but the clock display and face/button illumination remain on. This makes the clock display and face/button illumination "Keyed" instead of "Unit On" only. To turn the unit off completely, you must press the Off button for two seconds.

Note: When installing in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you must turn the radio completely off (this defeats keyed operation), or you may wire the accessory power wire of this radio to an alternate source of accessory power to retain keyed clock and face/button illumination operation.
