Your new favorite lensWhy will this lens leave a space in your camera bag? Because, with its versatility, you'll be happy to have it on the front of your camera most of the time. It's got a wide aperture and a generous wide-angle field of view, plus it zooms to a useful medium-telephoto length that will give you flexibility with isolating focus in all your close-ups. Backgrounds will blur nicely, allowing your subjects to command the frame. At full wide-angle, you'll be able get that shot of the mountain peak you conquered on your vacation this year with the whole crew waving in the foreground.
This Sony lens features sealed dust- and moisture-resistant construction, so it's ready for a bit of rough-and-tumble. That's a fine thing, given how much you'll want to use it. Of course, it has responsive and near-silent autofocus, so video shooting will be a breeze. And, like most of its cousins, this lens features extra-low dispersion glass and aspheric elements for sharp, clear color fidelity from edge to edge through the entire zoom range.

Sony Alpha 16-50mm f/2.8 Lens Reviews
Average Customer Review:
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
Incredible lens! I couldn't be happier. I use it on an Alpha and on my NEX7. Great shallow depth of field. I would recommend this lens
Pros: Fast and sharp
Cons: Maybe a slight bit heavy but quality build means a little more weight
Just what I was hoping for
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
This lens has not only met, but exceeded my expectations. I haven't had the opportunity to do landscape photography, but portrait has been exceptional. This lens is sharp and color is vibrant.
Pros: image clarity, functionality, and build quality is great.
Cons: a little heavy (but you'll get use to it quick!)

Optics: The Sony DT 16-50mm F2.8 SSM lens (SAL1650) is compatible with Sony α-series (Alpha) DSLR cameras. The DT lens is a compact, lightweight lens, designed specifically for the APS-size CCD imager used in most Sony α-series cameras. The lens employs a Super Sonic wave Motor (SSM), a high-torque, high response motor, to provide quick, quiet, and more precise auto-focusing. The lens includes the ALC-SH117 lens hood to reduce flare.
Zooming: The lens allows you to rotate the zooming ring to set the desired focal length. The 16-50mm lens features a 3.1x optical zoom. The lens has a zoom lock switch to prevent the lens barrel from extending due to the weight of the lens while it is carried.
Focusing: The lens can be used in the auto-focus or manual focus mode. You can switch between focusing modes using the 2-way switch on the lens barrel. Direct Manual Focus (DMF) allows you to rotate the focusing ring to set the proper focus, even when the camera is in Automatic Auto Focus (AF-A) or Single shot Auto Focus (AF-S).
Dimensions: The lens has the following dimensions: Diameter=3.177", Length=3.764" to 4.831" (without lens caps).

- Minimum Focus: 1.0'
- Filter Diameter: 72mm
