Simply The Best Lens I've Owned to Date!

Joe from Stonington, CT on 9/20/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The optical quality of this lens is amazing! Paired up with my Sony a77ll, this outfit gives me a perfect system for shooting high quality images. No purple fringe. No noticeable soft spots, just razor sharp images. Living on a disability retirement, I got into photography as therapy more than anything. It has quickly become a profession as well as an obsession. I chose the Sony Alpha A-mounts because they are compatible with many Minolta autofocus lenses. This meant cost savings as i could purchase used lenses anywhere online. Well, after getting my first Carl Zeiss lens, there is no going back to the cheap stuff! I may only be able to purchase a new lens every year to two years now, but I know I will produce the high quality images that I demand. It should also be noted that this lens is rock-solid. No cheap plastic feel here. The motor is very responsive and quiet. This is now my go-to, everyday lens. I highly recommend it. Very much worth the investment. Also, when purchasing this lens from Crutchfield you get personal customer assistance that is second to none! They are extremely helpful and they are very knowledgeable about the products they sell. If you are going to make the investment,it only makes sense to purchase here where you have the backing and experience that Crutchfield offers. I will never make this type of purchase again and hope that, when my number comes up, I get a geek that knows what I'm talking about. Enough said!

Pros: Razor sharp images. No more purple fringe! Fast autofocus.

Cons: Quality doesn't come cheap...

Sony SAL1680Z DT lens

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The optical quality of this lens is superb. I used to have a sony dsc-r1 with a carl ziess lens and I missed the "ziess" quality which i have not seen in any other lens. This lens is better than my original lens in every way. I have a sony a65 and can't believe the quality of my images. I would recommend this lens and would be sure it won't disappoint.

Pros: superb optical quality.

Cons: could be cheaper. Slightly larger and heavier than plastic lens

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very sharp in the center, excellent contrast and colors. AF speed is OK, but somewhat noisy. This lens was very soft at the corners at 16mm.

Features

Overview: The Sony SAL1680Z is a Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* DT16-80mm F3.5-4.5 ZA mid-range zoom lens designed for use with Sony A-mount cameras. Its 16-80mm focal length range is equivalent to 24-120mm in 35mm photography, which allows you to use this versatile lens almost exclusively for day-to-day shooting.

Compatibility: The lens is compatible with Sony interchangeable lens digital cameras. Since it is a DT lens, it is designed for use with cameras with an APS-C image sensor.

Carl Zeiss T* Coating: The SAL1680Z lens features the patented Carl Zeiss T* (T-Star) coating that virtually eliminates the lens flare, internal reflection, and light scattering that can occur at glass-to-air surfaces.

ED Glass: The SAL 1680Z has Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass elements for superior contrast and resolution throughout the image, even at large aperture settings.

Circular Aperture: The lens is equipped with a circular aperture which provides smooth, natural defocusing. Standard lens apertures appear as a flat-sided polygon, which results in the familiar polygonal out-of-focus highlights, seen in many photos.

Lens Hood: The lens comes with the SH0005 lens hood which helps prevent lens flare. When installed, the lens hood adds approximately 1-1/4" to the overall length of the lens. The hood can be stored on the lens by installing it backwards.

Lens Case: A padded, black vinyl lens case is included with the lens. It has a draw-string closure at the top of the pouch to secure the lens in the case.
