Why add a powered subwoofer?

A powered subwoofer gives you bass you can feel as well as hear. Our customers love the depth and impact their subs add to music and movies. We hear comments like "it brings out sounds I didn't know existed in discs I've watched a million times." Powered subwoofers aren't just for big bass that rattles your picture frames; they can also deliver tight, accurate lows. If you haven't shopped for a powered sub in a while, you might be surprised at how small they get. Look for an ultra-compact model if you want to tuck your sub away under an end table or in a corner.

Good bass to fill a room half power them then after they break in push them... I have 4 of these into a dennon reciever and Im pleased one sub will do it unless you want more bass

Pros: Good loud deep bass and more punch bass in movies and games

Cons: Untill it breaks in the sub distorted under high volume and the amp in back tends to get a lil warm I put fans near mine to keep the amps cool

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice sounding subwoofer for the price. Deep bass sound and you can control it from the back of the speaker. Since my wife doesn't care too much for the bass sound, I can easily turn it down until she leaves the room, then crank it back up. Crutchfield ROCKS!!

Pros: Easy to setup. Easy to control. Nice clear bass sound. Couldn't beat the price.

Cons: Wish the 6 foot cable they supplied would have been longer. I needed a little over 10 feet. Should also come in a white color.

Great sound, AMAZING price!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have to say all the reviews I read on this item were spot on... this subwoofer was a fantastic purchase! I bought it for my husband's birthday and he is quite the gadget snob. The man knows what he likes and what quality is really about and this gift made him smile. He just hooked it up last weekend and I believe his exact words were "Holy bass in your face!" We didn't need some state of the art system for our house, but this speaker does the job. I am super impressed about the quality for the price... very impressed.

Pros: PRICE! And the sound is really good.

Cons: We are having a little bit of difficulty figuring out how to set it up to automatically kick in and turn off w/out having to manually do it. This is likely just user error, but it's been complicated trying to figure it out.

I'm pleased with the sub, becuase it sounds good for my small living earea! I was supprised by the sound quality for a 60watt unit! I have the unit connected to a soundbar, and they work well together. a lot of watts doesn't always mean it will be louder and better! you have to see your specs, and etc. and what works good together, and i learned you can make good sound when you do it properly!! I will upgrade later, but for now it sound good! In all for the price, and sound I would recommend this unit. the sounbar i have with it is only stereo,PCM but the quality is very good, and like music! different strokes, for different folks...

Pros: good sound for the buck!

Cons: my neighbor doesn't like it! when the volume is turned up!!!

Good bang for the Buck

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fills the area with those lost lows only having surround and ceiling speakers. Won't rattle the house apart, but fills the air with some nice lows that accompany the sound of a nice surround nicely. I installed it in a 3season room that has ceiling speakers, and it gives just what I am looking for, even in an open air room. If your looking to create some bass, or that extra rumble when incorporated with a surround sound, this is the right track to go for the money.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just got this sub today after reading all the reviews and stuff. I just wanted it for my sound system in my bedroom. I Gotta say, for the price, its outstanding! Its not VERY powerful or loud, i have it set to the max level. It definetly gave me the added depth to my music and movies and games i was looking for. I highly recommend to anyone looking to add some bass on a budget, or in a small area.

Pros: CHEAP!! in price, not in construction.

Cons: DEEP!! but its really not so bad.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wow, great bass for the buck! If you have a big budget you will want to look else ware, but for this price you get a bunch of bass. Be aware that the depth is 16 + " so you need some room to put it. It has the important controls ... volume and cross-over frequency (knobs). Considering cost, I can't find any faults.

Pros: Price

Cons: Nothing, for the price

Sony Sub

Written By Chuck, Ga. on Sunday, June 12, 2011

My five star rating is based on value. For the money spent they perform above my expectation. I have two of these. I use one in my garage to lend some presence to a pair of small bookshelf speakers. The other is used to add some bottom end sound on a small system used mostly for television sound. The are both connected via high level input from inexpensive receivers. They allow easy tuning of the crossover point and output level, making them very user friendly. While they aren't audiophile quality, the sound from them is more than adequate for my applications, Their affordable price is just icing on the cake. It's a huge improvement to smaller speaker systems with a minimal investment.

This woofer puts out a lot of base for the money. I paired it with a 7.1 Sony receiver
hooked to a 55" Sony TV and a Sony blueray and the sound created is dynamic. I
watched the Daytona 500 last Sunday and felt like the cars were passing through my
livingroom and a big part of that was the base delivered by this woofer. For a 100bucks,

What a nice job Sony did with the speaker!
All for a great price, clean deep base.
I needed space, my old gear with a 400 watt cube amp took up a ton of space.
I use it for mostly for movies so if it falls short in the music department I don't care much.
I would buy this woofer again if need be, this was to do a job for a short period, but I justmay use it for a long time.

Budget boom!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a cheap sub for a little low end in the bedroom and this one fit the bill. Some people say some negative things about it, but remember the price. It's not as musical as the better ones, but it's impressive. I would say you get what you pay for, but this little guys worth a little more than it's asking price. Needless to say, it's overkill for the bedroom, but it provides all the bottom end I need for video games and movies, which is what it's used for. If people are having poor results with it, it's probably due to improper placement and settings. Buy it!

Doesn't suit my needs

Written By eabello, Urbana, MD on Sunday, September 19, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to add a .1 to my home audio system (a Yamaha receiver and five JBL speakers); the reviews here were mostly positive, so I thought I'd be getting a decent-quality budget sub. I was wrong, though -- the sub was OK for "booms" in movies/TV, but didn't really reproduce low frequency sounds very accurately.

My standard "reference" media consists of Casino Royale on Blu-ray and Herbert von Karajan conducting Beethoven's 9th on Deutsche Grammophon DVD. The movie sounded generally acceptable. The first few phrases from the fourth movement of Beethoven's 9th were especially muddy, however; I ended up turning the sub off, as my two-way JBLs produced a much more pleasing sound without it. I got similarly poor results from CDs and music from my dock-connected iPod.

Luckily, Crutchfield customer service is top-notch, and it was a breeze to set up a return.

I guess if you're just looking for a boom-boom-boom sub to add a little punch to your movies, then this is the way to go; but if you're expecting rich, accurate low frequencies from your music collection, keep looking. (I've replaced the W2500 with a Polk Audio sub and couldn't be happier; the Polk is more expensive, but can't be beat in terms of value for money.)

This one blasts me out of the house, I found that setting it at about 1/2 the possible output works best for me. I recommend this for anyone who doesn't want to spend a small fortune on a sub woofer. Do This For The Best Sound From This Sub!!!

Written By Chris, Broadway, VA on Thursday, January 21, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This sub can sound AWESOME! If someone is looking for a HIGH QUALITY SUB, this isn't it. BUT, you can get some bass out of this thing.
1. Use a good Receiver with a Subwoofer Pre-Out.
2. Do not use high level inputs! It completely takes away from the quality of sound, and will sound distorted as soon as you turn the level up half way.
Use the single Line Level Input. If it seems you are not getting as much bass as you would like, GET A 12db LINE LEVEL GAIN BOOSTER, a DOUBLE FEMALE TO MALE ADAPTER & A DOUBLE MALE TO FEMALE ADAPTER! Plug the 2 Outputs into the one adapter, & then to the receiver. Plug the Inputs to the the other adapter, & then the SINGLE Line Level RCA into the Sony Subwoofer. PLUG THE POWER IN FOR THE LINE LEVEL GAIN BOOSTER & Adjust the gains on the receiver to 1/2 way. Then adjust the level of the Line Level Booster to 1/2-3/4 gain. Turn the sub gain to half way, & turn on stereo & sub. Listen & adjust to liking on back of sub. This way will give you a gain that sounds double of what it was before you started. You will be a whole lot happier than you were when you first hooked it up. I got this & tried it on my cheap home stereo using the speaker wires on the High Level inputs, & it sounded NASTY. I tried the other way, & it was a complete turn around. AWESOME SUB when hooked up with a Gain Booster!! I would have gave this 5 stars, but without doing all of this.

Forget "For the Money"

Written By Donald, El Dorado, AR on Monday, July 07, 2008

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this for the cheap price and good reviews. I'm not dissapointed. It is specifically being used to compliment my outdoor system. (It's not rated for outdoor use, I've got it in a bench I built around it under the porch. I figured for $100, if it doesn't last I haven't lost much). It works very well. I'm trying to omit "for the money" from my review b/c it's a nice sub, regardless of the price.

Good: I compared it to my Polk sub in my home theater system and the little Sony helds it's own. It couldn't hang once the volume got way up there, but you could buy four of these Sony's "for the price" (ugh) of the POLK and not have that problem! Good sound, a little boomy, but the cutoff frequency adjustment helped that a lot. Nice to have a level adjust too.

Bad: At really low volume levels that we would use for "background noise" at a dinner the sub didn't want to turn on. What's wierd is if you turned the volume up a little and got the sub to come on, you could turn it back down and it would stay on. But we're talking really low volumes here. It's not a problem and I'd buy it again if I'd known it before. It's just something that never happened w/ my Polk.

Overall, great puchase, recommended.

This subwoofer is insanely loud!!! When i turn the volume up it literally shakes my entire 4 bedroom apt! On top of that the frequency response is awesome, really deep lows and tight highs. You can adjust the sound output to your liking via dials on the back of the speaker box, including cutoff freq, and gain. Im very satisfied with my purchase and will probably shop here again, best prices.

Low-buck boom

Written By cody3489, Horizon City, TX on Thursday, March 20, 2008

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

All in all a good sounding sub. I placed it BEHIND my entertainment center and it just fills the room with sound. My floorplan is wide open with the kitchen, dining room, and den all one big space along with 25 foot celings.
I can get enough bass out of this sub to rattle the windows and make wall art move.

The only complaint I have is about the plastic back. It surrounds the amp and is vented to keep that amp cool. It is also prone to rattling. I used some speaker batting in key areas to dampen things. Just don't cover up the vents or you will be smelling a hot amp in minutes.

This sub is good for music and surround--blending well with my Pioneer 5.1 system. No, this isn't going to perform as well as a Polk, but it isn't going to cost near the money a Polk does either.

My mother wanted to get rid of the big floor standing speakers and go with some smaller ones to hang in the corners. I told her she would be unhappy with the bass output of these, and needed a powered sub. I found this sony and figured it would be great to go with her system. It has great clean output, and once you get it set where you like it, you don't have to change the volume/crossover because it performs great. At high output it does try to reproduce the notes, but can distort. But, I think it's rattling the cabinet or has increased port noise at high volumes. I am overall very happy with the product, and my mother is extremely pleased with it.

How low can you go?

Written By Andrew, Longmont CO on Friday, January 25, 2008

My main speakers are 35 years old. However, they are as good today as when they were new. (yes sometimes you really do get what you pay for) My surround speakers are low priced Sonys. All this being said, I noticed that the new DVDs movies used a lot of bass for the reality experience and I wasn't getting what I needed out of these old speakers. Not wanting to put a bunch of money into my antique music system I decided to buy a pair of these speakers to get the low experience. I am glad I did, they perform exceedingly well. Now that I have added these speakers I will be able to get another 40 years out of my system...Oh, how many individual speakers??...32 by last count...

Advanced SAW Design: Combining a specialized speaker for deep bass with a built-in amplifier to provide power, the SA-W2500 features Sony's patented subwoofer design. In addition, this Super Acoustically Loaded product provides bass all the way down to 28Hz from a compact cabinet.

Woofer: The SA-W2500 has an 9-7/8" long-throw, mica-reinforced woofer for deep, accurate bass.

Amplifier: The subwoofer's built-in amplifier has a power output of 60 watts (6 ohms, 28-200Hz, 1% THD), and 150 watts maximum power (6 ohms, 80Hz, 10% THD).

Bass Port: There is a rear-firing bass port for improved bass response.

Video Shielded: The subwoofer's driver is magnetically shielded to allow you to place the unit near magnetic sensitive items like TVs or computer monitors without picture distortion.

Low-Pass Filter: The SA-W2500 offers a continuously variable low-pass filter, adjustable from 50-200Hz.

Phase Switch: The subwoofer's phase switch allows you to select normal or reverse. If the bass sounds muddy or unclear, toggling the phase control can sometimes strengthen the bass "attack."

Power Save: When the subwoofer is on, the power indicator light on the front of the cabinet glows green. If there is no signal input for seven minutes or more, the power indicator light changes to red and the subwoofer enters the power save mode. While in this mode, if the unit detects an input signal, it will automatically power on. The power save mode can be turned off using the switch on the back of the unit.

Inputs: The SA-W2500 features both line-level and speaker-level inputs. The line level input is a mono RCA jack. The speaker input features two sets of spring clips.

Outputs: There are also two pairs of spring clip speaker-level outputs.
