not very durable

Written By Ken, Wyncote, PA on Tuesday, December 02, 2008

I got this player for xmas 2006, started skipping and stalling buy
thanksgiving 2008. It was sitting on top of the reciever which is NOT
recomended. Moderate play on weekends.
This is NOT your last cd player.
Sound was good and I like the Sony interface with the track selector dial.
Crutchfield did have the best price.

Right out of the box....didn't play.

Written By IGO, Las Vegas on Sunday, November 09, 2008

How dose one rate this? This is the first Sony product I've purchased that gave me any trouble. I own an original 1 disc SACD player from Sony that plays beautifully so I know what this one can do. For that I couldn't make myself give it a 1 star. Since I have a Sony SACD player already, be it only a one disc changer, and the new ES Receiver has optical digital in, I opted for the 400 disc Sony Juke box.
I hope you didn't take short cuts in building this SACD Sony. I hold a lot of stock in you.

Good CD player

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just bought it few weeks ago. Working fine at this time. With this price range, the CD player is excellent.

Without digital SACD output it is just average

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My primary use for this unit is to program mini concerts across the five disks.

Without digital SACD output it is just an average CD player whose limitation by Sony gives me one more reason to not even consider buying any SACD recordings.

Great Quality - Poor Features

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Everything is fine with this CD player, except one very important thing: you cannot turn it on or off with a remote control...not even a universal one.

While I appreciate quality, without the convienence of a remote control with on/off...there's just no reason to purchase this CD player. Buy something else that's high quality and offers a fairly standard convienence.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Been a SONY girl for 15 yrs, now that i can afford it. Laser died. Played one song. stopped. Called SONY. Offer - could purchase a refurbished one, from SONY. HUH! Paid just $149 from my guys. My 15yr old CDP-C225 is still going strong. Not being an "audiofile", i think the more bells and whistles just complicate things. I'll stick to the basics. So, i'll order another "simple" one for the outside entertainment needs.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this unit out of necessity due to an error on my part. I had erroneously bought a SACD mistakenly thinking it was a "hybrid", but it wasn't! Oops! I decided to get this unit so I could play my SACD when it arrived, plus I already have several "hybrid" SACDs, so I figured I would go for it. Wow, was I surprised! Not only do the SACDs sound great, there is noticable improvement in the sonic clarity of my standard CDs. This was a good move for me, even if it was by accident.

Pleasant surprise

Written By John, Chicago on Tuesday, May 08, 2007

I bought this as a convenience to play CD's in the background in my family room/home theatre. I liked it so well I moved it to become part of my main stereo system for serious listening. Good for conventional CD's as well as SACD's.

On the down side, the tray is noisy and the player is designed to be turned on and off by a receiver. The lack of an on/off button on the remote can be annoying if your receiver doesn't have a switched outlet.

Great unit. Sony is tried and true. Can't go wrong with this unit. One samll annoyance. There is no on/off on the remote. Can't figure out what they were thinking. If your reciever has electrical outlets on the back, plug this unit in. It will turn on when the reciever is turned on. Problem solved.

Great value

For the money this is a great buy and works great. My old cd player broke so this solved the problem with an affordable price and fast shipping.

No power on/off on the remote !

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the price this player is great. I was amazed, however, to find that the remote control unit has no power on/off button! I have the player tied to a Bose system. The Bose system doesn't have an aux plug which would allow me to power on/off through the Bose. I think Sony could have included the power on/off button on the remote for this player

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a very goodCDplayer. It woke up my old 70's stuff enough for me to buy all new stuff. This company is really fast on getting the parts to you. I have written a few reviews for Crutchfield, all good, I hope it stays the same. I had an old Sony carousel and it would skip if someone walked across the floor. No problems here. i did the old mid-life crisis with sports cars 10 years ago. Now it's stereo stuff. This is not bad gear.

Not Universal.

Written By McBain, Mont. on Wednesday, August 24, 2005

This is not a bad CD player with the exception of the amount of noise the tray makes while changing disks. The biggest problem however, is that SACD is a dead format. Anyone still interessted in 24 bit multichannel music is MUCH better off buying a universal DVD player that will handle SACD and current formats such as DualDisc DVD-A.

A great SACD player for so little money

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If all you buy this for is to listen to Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones on SACD, it will be well worth the money you spend. But it doesn't sound bad on regular CDs, either. A genuine value.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Honestly, I went into purchasing the SACD blind. After reading what I could comprehend from various sources, it was within my price range and believe SONY makes a good product. In short, the sound quality from the player is overwhelming. Crisp, clear, the nearist to having the artist/orchestra in your home. 5star recommendation

Performance/Value winner!

Written By Michael, Nashville, TN on Tuesday, March 01, 2005

The price to performance ratio of this player is incredible. To make the next jump up in SACD performance you'd have to go up several hundred dollars. This player is leaps and bounds above other sacd offerings in it's price range.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Disc Compatibility: The SCD-CE595 Super Audio CD player can play the following discs:

  • Single layer 2-channel and Multi-channel Super Audio CDs: These discs contain a single HD (high density) layer, can hold up to 74 minutes of music, and are playable ONLY on an SACD compatible unit such as the SCD-CE595.
  • Dual layer 2 channel and Multi-channel Super Audio CDs: These discs contain two HD layers for longer playing times. The information is recorded on one side only, so the discs do not have to be turned. These discs are playable ONLY on an SACD compatible unit such as the 'CE595.
  • 2 channel and Multi-channel Super Audio CD + CD (Hybrid disc): These discs contain a high density SACD layer and a conventional CD layer, allowing them to be played either on an SACD-compatible unit OR on a regular CD player.
  • Conventional Audio CDs
  • CD-R
  • CD-RW

SACD Playback Types: This unit automatically recognizes the type of SACD you are playing, and routes the audio signal to one of the two sets of analog audio outputs. There are three types of Super Audio CDs:

  • 2-channel: The disc contains only 2-channels of information. When playing this disc, the player is automatically set to 2-channel playback, and audio is output only from the left and right front analog outputs.
  • Multi-channel: The disc contains multiple channels of information (3, 4, 5, or 6). When playing this disc, the player is automatically set to multi-channel playback, and audio is output from the 5.1-channel analog outputs.
  • 2-Channel + Multi-channel: The disc contains both 2-channel information and multi-channel information. You can select the type of playback you desire on the unit or remote, and the audio is output only from the jacks corresponding to the type of playback you select.

Direct Stream Digital (DSD) Encoding: Super Audio CD uses DSD encoding (compared to PCM used for CD/MiniDisc/DVD-Audio/DVD-Video etc.). DSD uses a sampling frequency 64 times higher than conventional CD (2,822,400 samples per second) and 1-bit quantization. This achieves a wide frequency range and a wide dynamic range across the audible frequency range, thereby providing musical reproduction extremely faithful to the original.

Discrete Dual Laser Optical Pickup: Because of the significant difference in the laser wavelength between SACD (650 nm) and CD (780 nm), this unit is equipped with a discrete dual laser optical pickup--two independent lasers working through a common lens. One laser is exclusively for CD, CD-R and CD-RW, while the other laser delivers uncompromised reproduction of SACD.

Super Audio DAC: The 'CE595 uses a Super Audio D/A Converter, which allows higher quality sound reproduction.

Multi-Channel Management Function (SACD only): The Multi-channel Management Function uses Digital Signal Processing to allow you to set up the unit according to the presence and size of your speakers and the distance from your listening position (3 to 23 feet in 1 foot increments). For multi-channel playback mode, speakers designated as "Large" will be sent full-range audio, while speakers designated as "Small" will receive signals that have been filtered to remove low bass frequencies. For proper channel balance during multi-channel playback, the center, surround and subwoofer channel output levels may be adjusted at the unit or with the remote. If you have an ideal speaker output, you can select MCH Direct, which bypasses the DSP circuit, and outputs the signal directly from each speaker at a non-adjustable level. For 2-channel playback, you can select 2CH Direct (2 speakers/no subwoofer) or 2CH + SW (2 speakers with subwoofer).

Digital Output: This unit is equipped with an optical digital output which is active only when playing a standard CD. There is no digital signal output during SACD playback.

SACD and CD Text Compatible: This unit can display the disc name, artist name, and current track name for CD Text and SACD Text discs. If the name has 13 or more characters, the first 12 characters will remain after the name scrolls by on the display. If a disc's text is in multiple languages, "Multi-Text" will appear in the display, and you can select which language you want to display.

15 Track Music Calendar: A calendar-like display lights up with the number of tracks on the currently selected disc, up to 15. An "arrow" icon indicates the presence of 16 or more tracks. After a track has been played, the number for that track disappears from the calendar display.

Display: The display can be set to show current track/elapsed time, current track/remaining time, remaining time for entire disc, Text information, and channel information (for multi-channel SACDs). The display can also be turned off.

Remote Control: The supplied remote (RM-SX800) is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on other Sony CD players. The remote's codes correspond to Sony CD Player codes, so many of its functions can be operated with a normal Sony receiver or preamp remote control.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Analog Outputs: The SCD-CE595 features a 5.1-channel output (Female RCA Jacks for Front left/right, Surround left/right, Center, Subwoofer) for multi-channel SACD playback. When a 2-channel SACD or standard CD is played, the audio is output through the Front left/right RCA jacks only.

Note: If only the Front left/right outputs are connected to a receiver or amplifier, you must change the default playback area to the 2-channel area. Otherwise, the multi-channel playback area will be played and some vocals and other sounds may not be heard.

Optical Digital Output (CD only): One Toslink optical digital output is provided to allow you to make digital recordings. Only 16-bit PCM digital signals from a CD, or the CD layer of a Hybrid SACD disc, are output through the optical jack. No SACD audio is output.
