Our take on the Sony KDS-R50XBR1

by Steve Kindig
Sony

The wait is over. Videophiles who have followed the development of Sony's dazzling SXRD (Silicon Crystal Reflective Display) projection TV technology can now enjoy it without taking out a bank loan.

SXRD is a refined version of LCoS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) display technology. The KDS-R50XBR1 uses Sony's newest high-definition SXRD image panels, each with 1920 x 1080 pixels — the highest resolution available. SXRD also boasts the highest "pixel density" of any TV available, as well as the tightest between-pixel spacing. The distance from the middle of one pixel to the middle of the next is only about 1/8 the width of a human hair! SXRD images possess jaw-dropping clarity, detail and depth, but the most striking quality is a silky smoothness that creates a more filmlike look.

The KDS-R50XBR1's exceptional color purity is one of the main advantages of using three SXRD image panels (one each for red, green, and blue signals). This 3-chip design ensures rich, radiant, rock-steady color. Sony's innovative Cinema Black Pro "dynamic iris" technology improves contrast and black level by reducing the TV's light output in dark scenes. A circuit continuously samples the brightness content of the video signal and adjusts the iris opening on the fly to deliver the best possible brightness, contrast, and black level.

This "Digital Cable Ready" TV can receive both over-the-air and cable high-definition TV signals without using a separate set-top box. To make the most of the built-in cable tuner, request a CableCARD from your local service provider. The CableCARD replaces the cable box, simplifying your hookup, providing a slightly better picture, and eliminating one remote control.

Before now, SXRD was only available in Sony's $30,000 Qualia™ 004 front projector and $13,000 Qualia 006 rear-projection TV (often hailed as the world's finest HDTV). With the KDS-R50XBR1, this groundbreaking technology can now be yours for a fraction of that cost. Once you've seen SXRD work its magic in your home theater, you may decide to stop paying to see movies at the local theater. It's that good.

Features

SXRD Technology: SXRD is a refined version of LCoS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) display technology. SXRD employs three Silicon X-tal Reflective Display panels, which aid in the response time of image changes and movement. SXRD delivers high-level resolution, greater contrast ratio, faster response speed and film-like reproduction compared to other conventional devices.

HDTV: The KDS-R50XBR1 has a built-in ATSC tuner that will receive over-the-air and cable High Definition signals without the need for a separate DTV set-top box. With its HD-compatible component video and HDMI inputs, the TV can also display programs in High Definition from high-end DVD players and set-top boxes. In addition, the TV also includes an NTSC tuner for analog broadcasts, and is CableCARD ready.

CableCARD: CableCARD provides cable subscribers with access to digitally encrypted cable channels without the need for a separate set-top box. With CableCARD, you can receive both standard definition and high definition programming. The CableCARD, provided by the cable TV company, inserts into the TV's rear panel CableCARD slot.

Native Resolution: The KDS-R50XBR1 has three high-definition SXRD image panels, each with 1920 x 1080 pixels. Each panel has 2 million pixels, so there is no loss of detail. SXRD preserves every pixel of the source, and brings the full 1080 lines to the screen without interlacing, displaying the signal at 1080p. The resulting picture has incredible clarity and a smooth, filmlike quality.

WEGA Engine System: Sony's Proprietary WEGA Engine System delivers superb picture quality from any video source by minimizing the signal deterioration caused by digital to analog conversion and stabilizing the signal processing. This engine features 3 key technologies engineered and designed by Sony:

  • Composite Component Processor (CCP-X): The first step in the digital processing system is the Composite Component Processor (CCP-X), which enhances the input signal-to-noise ratio by chroma decoder digital processing.
  • DRC (Digital Reality Creation)-MF V2: Unlike conventional line doublers, the DRC Multifunction feature replaces the signal's NTSC waveform with the near-HD equivalent by digital mapping processing. The DRC Palette option lets you customize the level of detail (Reality) and smoothness (Clarity) to create up to three custom palettes.
  • IFP (Image Format Processor): The Digital Texture Enhancer function of this chip provides the optimal contrast by utilizing a wide dynamic range. This chip also reduces signal noise while maintaining image sharpness.

Advanced Iris: This advanced iris shutter opens and closes automatically according to the incoming signal level. This results in brighter whites and better overall contrast in dark scenes.

DRC Modes: You can choose from the following DRC advanced video options to create a high-resolution picture with 4x density for high quality sources:

  • Mode 1: recommended for moving pictures
  • Mode 2: recommended for still images and text
  • CineMotion: provides an optimized display by automatically detecting film content and applying a reverse 3-2 pulldown process. Moving pictures will appear clearer and more natural-looking.

BN Smoother: To reduce noise caused by the digital video encoding and decoding process, you can activate the BN Smoother feature. It is especially effective for watching a DVD or digital TV picture. You can select High, Medium, Low, or Off.

Note: This feature is not available for 480p, 720p, or 1080i sources, or when using Twin View, Freeze, or Memory Stick.

Advanced Video Settings: In addition to the DRC Modes, DRC Palette, and the BN Smoother, the Advanced Video Settings menu also features the following:

  • Color Corrector: makes the colors more vivid; you can select High, Low, or Off
  • DTE: enhances the texture of the picture; you can select High, Medium, Low, or Off
  • Clear White: emphasizes the white colors; you can select On or Off
  • Detail Enhancer: sharpens picture definition; you can select High, Medium, Low, or Off
  • Black Corrector: enhances the black colors and gives the picture strong contrast; you can select High, Medium, Low, or Off
  • Gamma Corrector: adjusts the balance between bright and dark areas of the picture; you can select High, Medium, Low, or Off
  • White Balance: allows you to adjust the white color intensity by changing the red, green, and blue levels

S-master Full Digital Amplifier: The built-in S-master Full Digital Amplifier delivers superb clear dialog and reproduces the original sound quality while minimizing any sound fragmentation or jitter noise. The amplifier delivers 15 watts per channel to the left and right speakers.

Optical Engine: The Sony optical engine provides a high-resolution picture from corner to corner across the entire screen. It also renders an image with high-brightness utilizing a 120W UHP (Ultra High Pressure) Lamp (Model XL-5100) that you can easily replace.

Note: No lamp life information is provided.

Program Guide: This TV is equipped to show program information if it is available from the station. The Program Guide lets you review program information, and select both analog and digital channels.

Twin View: Twin View allows you to watch two programs side-by-side with the ability to zoom in on one picture and listen to the program in the selected window. You can watch pictures from two different sources simultaneously.

Freeze Function: This function allows you to temporarily capture a program's picture. The TV switches to Twin View mode and displays the "frozen" picture on the right, while the current program continues on the left. This function only works in normal view mode; if you are in Twin View mode already, it will not work.

Favorite Channel Preview: This feature allows you to preview up to 16 favorite channels without leaving the current channel. The preview is shown in the upper right corner with the favorite channel list shown below, while the current channel appears in the left 3/4 of the screen.

Video Mode: You can select Vivid, Standard, or Pro. The Vivid setting enhances picture contrast and sharpness. The Standard setting displays a standard picture for normal viewing environments. The Pro setting displays a picture with minimum enhancements. You can set a Video mode independently for each video input.

Wide Screen Modes: You can select a default screen mode to use for 4:3 sources. While watching a channel, you can use the Wide Mode button to cycle through the wide screen modes. If the 4:3 Default is set to anything but Off, the wide screen mode setting changes only for the current channel. When you change channels, the wide mode is automatically replaced with the 4:3 Default setting. You can choose from the following screen wide screen mode options:

  • Wide Zoom: enlarges the center portion of the picture and stretches the left and right edges to fill the screen
  • Normal: returns the 4:3 picture to normal mode with side bars to fill the screen
  • Full: enlarges the 4:3 picture horizontally only to fill the wide screen
  • Zoom: enlarges the 4:3 picture horizontally and vertically to an equal aspect ratio that fills the screen

Power Saving: You can view the picture with reduced power consumption by selecting the Power Saving mode. The picture becomes darker, but the black level is enhanced. To view the picture without the benefit of Power Saving, you can select "Standard" mode.

Steady Sound: This feature stabilizes the volume level, preventing unwanted blasts of sound during commercials.

Surround Effects: To enhance the sound, you can select one of three surround effect modes:

  • Virtual Dolby: for surround sound effects for Dolby Surround-encoded programs only
  • TruSurround: adds a three-dimensional sound to stereo programs
  • Simulated: adds a surround-like effect to mono-channel programs.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer switches the television off after a specified amount of time. The sleep timer can be set to 15, 30, 45, 60, or 90 minutes.

Timers: This unit has two timers that can be set by day, time, duration, and channel.

Optional TV Stand: The TV can be mounted on the optional Sony SU-GW12 stand (item # 158SUGW12).

Memory Stick Slot

Memory Stick Viewer: This television has a front-panel Memory Stick slot that is compatible with JPEG images taken with Sony digital still cameras and MPEG1 movies taken with Sony digital cameras and camcorders. The slot will accept Memory Stick Duo and Memory Stick PRO Duo without having to use a Memory Stick Duo adapter. The Memory Stick viewer is compatible with Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO (up to 1GB), Memory Stick Duo and PRO Duo (up to 1GB), and Memory Stick with Memory Select function.

Memory Stick Index: The Memory Stick Index displays up to 15 thumbnail images of the files stored on a Memory Stick. You can individually highlight and display any image in the Index.

Viewing Still Images: When viewing a still image, you can rotate the image 90 degrees clockwise or counterclockwise. In addition, you can zoom in and out and pan up/down/left/right to view a portion of the picture.

Playing Movies: When viewing a movie on a Memory Stick, you can enlarge the movie window for easier viewing. During playback, you can pause the movie or move to the previous or next movie on the Memory Stick.

Slide Show: You can view JPEG images or MPEG1 movies in a Slide Show. During Slide Show playback, you can choose one of the following interval speeds: Fast (3 seconds), Medium (6 seconds), Slow (12 seconds), or Manual Advance. If you desire to have music playing during the slide show, you can start playing back a built-in MP3 file of piano music.

Remote Control

Multibrand Remote: The supplied remote is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on other brands of A/V components, including DVD players, laserdisc players, VCRs,  cable boxes, and satellite receivers.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

HDMI Inputs: The TV features two HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) inputs that provide an uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface between the TV and any HDMI-equipped device, such as a DTV set-top box, DVD player or A/V receiver. HDMI supports enhanced or high-definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio. You can also connect a DVI-equipped device to the TV via an HDMI-DVI adapter cable. Since a DVI connection does not output audio, you will also need to connect an audio cable from the DVI-equipped device to the TV. One of the two HDMI inputs has an audio input.

i.LINK: The TV has three i.LINK inputs, one on the front panel and two on the rear-panel, allowing the display to be used with compatible i.LINK-equipped A/V components.

Note: These terminals are not intended for use with personal computers.

Component Video Inputs: The two component video inputs will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i signals.

Audio Out: The TV has a rear-panel audio output, which consists of left and right RCA audio jacks. Using the menu, you can choose Fixed or Variable audio output. The audio jacks are only operable when the TV's built-in speakers are turned off.

Optical Output: You can use the TV's optical digital audio output to connect a Dolby Digital/PCM-compatible digital audio device, such as an audio amplifier.

Control S: Control S allows you to control the TV and other Sony equipment with one remote control. There are two Control S connections; both 3.5mm mini-jacks, one in and one out.

Best TV, Poor Support

Written By wbehrmann, NJ on Monday, October 15, 2007
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love this TV, It makes my Xbox360 and PS3 look AMAZING... Go to a display room and just compare it... it blows any other tv away in color/brights/darks/cripstness

I bought a Logitech Harmony 720 remote to deal with the not so great user interface ( highly recommend the remote too other then no bluetooth support for my Wii and PS3 )

*** -1 Star***
Due to the following:
Yes there is a known issue with the optical engine and Sony will pay for the repair... you just need to go through the hassle once it starts... i owned it for 1.7 years before it started to happen...

Known problem yellow on right side

Written By Eric, Bentonville, AR on Tuesday, September 26, 2006

I also bought mine in march. Love the TV, but am also getting the yellowing in the right hand side of the screen. Called Sony, and then the recommended repair shop. They have been very responsive to my needs. Only thing is once they repair it, how long will it last after that?

Warning! Known issue!

Written By John, Dallas, TX on Tuesday, August 22, 2006

I have been dazzled by this tv, but this model has a known issue that is only now coming to be known (8/22/06). I bought in March and there is a yellow stripe running vertically down the right side of the screen. Sony is fixing the problem, but it may be worth knowing. $3K is a lot to spend for a tv, so be careful!

Broke after 5 months of moderate use

Written By Bob, Buffalo Grove, Illinois on Monday, August 21, 2006

I purchased this set in March, 2006, after extensive research. The HD picture is stunning. The non- HD broadcasts are fair to poor (digital cable hook-up.) The set developed a light yellow line on the right side which does not go away. The fix - a new optical engine at $1400 just for the part. Sony would not exchange the set, so find a good repair shop and get an extended warranty. Sony customer support was MIA in all regards. I can't get over their lack of help for what this product costs, and I do not demand much. Good thing.

the best out there

Written By jefferson, warwick RI on Wednesday, May 31, 2006

I shopped around and researched dlp's and lcd's, but when I saw this beauty, I had to have it. I was told it would look 10 times better in my home, but I never dreamed it would be this awesome. Granted the hi def cable system where I live is very good. If you like sports, this is the tv for you. I didn't have to do a thing , out of the box the picture was beautiful. My outdated dvd player looks like gabage, but I expected that. I just purchased a sony -ns75h with hdmi upconvert but I havn't recieved it yet. I've only had it a week, but I love this tv.

Best TV on the market

Written By Mark, Kingston, NH on Tuesday, May 23, 2006

I've been researching various TV technologies for 6+ months. I've been to several stores and technology shows seeing all the different technology (DLP, Plasma, and LCD), and nothing comes close to the SXRD technology.

When matched with my Sony ES receiver and Polk RTi speakers - forget about ever going to a movie theater again. This is by far the best movie experience.

Even non-HD programming is crisp, but I can't wait to get Sony's HD-DVD player.

You can't go wrong with this TV.

Sony KSSR50XBR1

Written By Ken, FL. on Sunday, April 09, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent,Excellent,Excellent. I have had this Sony XBR1 50" for about a month. I had done a lot of research and side by side comparisons, and it is definitely the best projection TV on the market. With it's 2 million pixels and being 1080P, even the regular (non-hidef) channels look awsome. I am still mesmerized by the picture, I often watch hi-dev channels, just to see the picture and not the content of the program. There are all kinds of features and controls to adjust the picture just the way you want it. Out of the box, it is set for Vivid mode, you'll probably want to change to standard mode for most lighting conditions. One nice feature I liked was being able to skip the inputs you don't use so you don't have to scroll thru all 7 inputs to get back to the one you want to use.

Awesome Technology

Written By Dennis, Hillsboro, OR on Saturday, March 25, 2006

SXRD is truly a fantasic technology no doubt w/ incredible potential..however Sony dropped the ball on these 1st gen models. Drawbacks include the PIP "twin view" only for SDTV 480i signals (huh?), no antenna signal-strength meter, uses the outdated inferior(one way) 1st gen cable card, non-removable speakers (why Sony?), no "middle" 55" size available, and lastly no support for true 1080p HDTV signals (Blu-ray/HD-DVD). For such an expensive set I expect better from Sony. I'll wait until Sony delivers an improved model as well as watch the prices of all the RPTV's continue to fall :) Also, be on the lookout for OLED technology

Sony KDS-R50XBR1

Written By Randy, Arlington,VA on Sunday, March 12, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had this for a little over a month now. Picture is great. I hooked up my cable box via hdmi and the hd broadcasts are amazing. There are a lot of settings to play with to get just the right picture that you like.
This tv even makes dvd's played by a playstation2 look good.
I shopped around for a while, and i'm glad i chose this tv as opposed to another less expensive model.
Only thing that bugs me though, is the wait when turning on the tv - which really isn't so bad.

Sony has really put together a stunning HD product. Picture quality is excellent with vibrant colors and superb black levels. Prior to purchase I viewed alot of other products but non compared to the XBR1.
Picture quality is 10 times better in the comfort of your home vs. the retailers showroom. You will not be disappointed in the picture and overall quality this TV has to offer.

Problems

Written By ditcin, Staten Island, NY on Sunday, February 26, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The 50in that came delivered incredible color and contrast, even with DVDs. The color is just eye popping - Sony color is the best. However, There is a weird green tint that is noticable upon turn on. Sony states it will go away - but it didn't on my. It is most noticable during gray or certain white segments of the picture. It is extremely noticable during B&W movies. For test, just choose the memory stick option on the remote and that menu screen will pop up. Because it's all gray the green tint with rear it's ugly head. I exchanged this 50in with a 60in but found that too was defective. That was exchanged for final time for another 60in. I've always trusted and loved Sony products thinking of them with a higher standard - but allowing this problem to continue I have to now wonder. In all this I also must state Chutchfield has been there on my side. They have been very generous with exchanges in hope of getting me a good working set. I don't blame them for ending it at #3. I've dealt with them for over 20yrs and would even with this problem I would gladly come back for future purchases.
WIth this set works it is supreme - but due to the problems I was forced to give only 3 stars.

A living room show piece......

Written By HiDefJohnnyAppleseed, Bellingham, Ma on Friday, January 27, 2006

What ever you do be absolutely sure as to the screen size your room can accommodate. Upon delivery our 50" grew 30 to 40% larger than the floor model.

A few observations:
1. Theres 2 small speakers in each silver panel. They seem more for the design factor opposed to audio fidelity. Also, they make this TV appear unnecessarily large.

2. The bulb compartment is easily accessible on the right side. To remove it involves the turn of one screw soon followed up by pulling a strap on the back side of bulb cartridge.

3. You cant stray to far to the left or right of the screen otherwise you lose the picture. Same goes for below and above the screen. I find I need to stay with in the confines of the screen with a sweet spot at a distance of 8 to 10 feet other wise you lose depth of picture.

4. Bulb need a few minutes to warm up upon powering on. This tv throws a lot of light, its beautifully bright. So bright I find I need to tone down for night time viewing as opposed to a well lit room or day time viewing.

5. You can watch 2 video inputs on a split screen. You can increase one screen up to 27 " while shrinking the other screen to 13 " or watch 2 21" screens side by side (rough estimate). Theres a freeze feature on the remote which integrates the split screen feature. It freezes what ever your watching and follows up with a second screen with the same viewing content without program interruption.

6. Dvd with composite cables even look impressive. Depending on programming, video source or viewing distance you may see the screen door effect. Its unavoidable at some point.

9.The silver remote feels solid and of good quality.

AWSOME TV

Written By JJ, PA. on Sunday, January 22, 2006

Awesome TV!!!
I have not seen a better HD TV out there.
Sony Has definitely Gone to the ultimate with Picture Quality and Crispness. The SXRD Technology has pushed High Definition to a level of performance that will be very hard to touch. I never thought a Projection set of any kind would impress me more than Plasma, But this TV does.
With all of the standards that have been set in the past, Sony has pushed the limit. With SXRD they have SET the standard!!!
I expect that with a HD DVD format this TV will handle Anything that Digital video can throw.
I Will be impressed for years to come!!!

Exceeded my expectations

Written By Rajan, Seattle, WA on Tuesday, January 17, 2006

With so many products in the market and with the plasma comparable or higher price for this product, I was really concerned whether this TV would meet my expectations. I have to say that so far (12 days and counting) I've been blown away. Watching HD broadcasts, in particular, is truly an awesome experience. I haven't had to muck with changing any of the settings. I couldn't think of anything to change at the moment. The only thing I did was take it out of VIVID mode and set it to STANDARD.

I did also get a Paramax surge protection device. Pricey but I figured this was a good investment. I'm using component cables from my HD DVR to the TV. Haven't decided whether HDMI is required at this point.

While I expect to pay some premium for Crutchfield's superior shopping experience and service, I wish they were a little more competitive.

All in all, I highly recommend this set....but then again, it's only been 12 days so far....

HD Heavan

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After many hours of reading forums and reviews, I decided on the 50 inch SXRD. If you want HD, an awesome picture, an array of HDMI(2), component connections, this is the one. I strongly recommend that you learn everything about connecting the TV to whatever sources you have or need so that you can hit the ground running once you receive the TV. Great experience with the TV and Crutchfield. Ordered Saturday December 31st and received it in perfect condition on Saturday January 7th. Two thumb way up!

Awesome picture

Written By Drew, Las Vegas, NV on Friday, October 21, 2005

I just got my TV delivered this week and the picture is awesome. I would have given 5 stars except that I was disappointed to discover the Dual picture mode will only display select input sources at a time. Specifically you can only either view one component video or HDMI source OR an S-video or worse input at a time (see the section on dual picture in the owner's manual-- downloadable PDF at Sony's web-site).

WOW!

Written By jufon, Dallas on Friday, October 14, 2005

WOW! What a picture. I just traded in the Sony KD-34XBR960 (from crutchfield), which is the standard by which CRT's are measured and this one is close! It doesn't have quite the depth and film like quality color like the 960, but I've yet to see any other set; regardless of type that does! (the only reason i didn't give it a 5 star)The settings where almost perfect, but you will want to take it out of Vivid mode (used to get your attention in the store, but very hard on the TV). There is none of the "screen door" or "rainbow" effects you hear about with other sets.
If you want the best 50"or 60" set, you can't go wrong with this one. It has all the connections and features you'd expect from Sony and for this price.
This is a new type of technology, so we'll need to see about its reliability, but I've never had any issues with my Sony products.

And Crutchfield is absolute the BEST to work with!! I do a lot of on-line buying and I've never, I mean never dealt with a better customer service department. Keep this in mind when spending this kind of $$. I guarantee if it's wrong, they'll fix it.

The only down side I have are the speakers. I wish they could be removed. They eat up a lot of space. I really can't see someone using them. I mean, if you're going to spend this kind of $$ I bet you have a HTS.

Regards,
Jufon
