Beauty and brains

The Sony SRS-X9 exudes style, with its piano black gloss finish, an elegant glass top featuring touch-control buttons that illuminate when your hand hovers over them, and subtle gold trim around the tweeters. But it's what you find "under the hood" that really makes the SRS-X9 a gem of a wireless speaker.

This system comes with state-of-the-art wireless playback options such as Wi-Fi®, AirPlay, and high-quality Bluetooth aptX. The SRS-X9 can also play high-resolution music files for better-than-CD sound quality. The time Sony spent developing, creating, and tweaking the speaker's hardware and technology definitely paid off.

High-tech design for powerful sound

Remove the metal grille with the provided magnet tool and you'll see what makes this system really tick — five of the SRS-X9's seven drivers. In the center, a woofer sits surrounded by dual passive radiators. Two midrange drivers and a pair of tweeters are found on either side. To make the most of their space, Sony used their Magnetic Fluid drivers for the midranges, which are thinner and more efficient than typical speakers. There's a second pair of tweeters placed on top of the speaker to provide more spacious sound. The soundfield produced by this single speaker system is extremely impressive, fueled by an eight-channel S-Master® HX digital amp pumping in 154 watts of total sonic muscle.

High-res audio

Enjoy high-resolution music

Sony developed the noise-reducing amp with high-resolution audio in mind, and the SRS-X9 is capable of 24-bit/192kHz playback. It handles lossless and uncompressed music files including FLAC and DSD through a USB Type A or Type B connection. But if you are streaming or playing files that may not inherently be the best — such as your favorite MP3 playlists — Sony's added an enhancement mode to restore some of the elements that can get lost with compressed music files, including high frequency response.

Connectivity without compromise

When choosing an audio system these days we often have to prioritize: do we want to go for sound quality or convenience? When they built the SRS-X9, Sony clearly thought this was an unfair choice. Not only have they paid close attention to delivering an excellent audio experience, but they've also included the latest technologies to make sure you can easily access your music:

Top of speaker

Modest yet good-looking design

  • Connect the speaker to your Wi-Fi network with an assist from Sony's SongPal app for iOS® or Android™, available in Google Play or the App store. When connected, your stored music, Pandora Internet radio stations, even music stored on a DLNA connected computer can all be accessed directly from the app.
  • Pair it with your Bluetooth device of choice, even streaming at CD-quality with aptX® audio.
  • Use its built-in Apple AirPlay technology to wirelessly play music from an iPad®, iPhone®, or computer running iTunes.
  • Plug your computer, tablet, or phone into the USB Type A or B jack for music playback, including high-resolution music files. It will also charge your phone's battery.
  • Connect just about anything that has a headphone jack to the 3.5mm aux input.

Spotify® Connect friendly

When your iOS or Android device and speaker are synced up to your Wi-Fi network, there is another way to play music wirelessly if you have a Spotify Premium account. The SRS-X9 becomes an option for the Spotify Connect feature of the Spotify app, found in the form of a "speaker" icon at the bottom right-hand corner of the "play" screen. Spotify Connect is a new way to use your phone or tablet to select, play, and control music from your Spotify account through the speaker. Since the music is streaming through the Wi-Fi connected network, you don't have the range restrictions of Bluetooth. You can also make a phone call, play a video, or use an app on your device without interrupting the music coming from the SRS-X9.
