About the Sony SRS-X99

Ralph Graves

Amazing high-res sound quality

If you're serious about the sound of your digital music, you should seriously consider the Sony SRS-X99. This advanced Bluetooth powered speaker can play high-resolution digital music files, including DSD (Direct Stream Digital) files. DSD was developed by Sony for Super Audio CDs. It has a warmth and smoothness that many consider to be similar to high-quality analog sources, but with the clarity and dynamics that we've come to expect from digital sources.

Sony SRS-X99

The SRS-X99 features two top-firing and two front-firing tweeters, and two full-range speakers (far left/right), a low-frequency woofer (center), and two passive radiators (left/right center).

Full, high-performance sound

The SRS-X99's seven-speaker array delivers a rich, spacious stereo soundstage. Four tweeters, two up-firing and two front-firing, give you crystal clear highs, while the two full-range speakers provide substance to the midrange. A dedicated woofer, reinforced by two passive radiators, fills out the low frequencies. Sony's advanced enhancement mode restores some of the elements that can get lost with compressed music files, including high-frequency response, so your music will sound its best.

A world of entertainment options

The SRS-X99 offers a wealth of listening options. Stream wirelessly from any smartphone or tablet with Bluetooth. If you have an iPhone® or iPad®, you can stream wirelessly via Apple® AirPlay®. The SRS-X99's USB input lets you play high-resolution music files directly from your computer. Connect your smartphone or tablet through the second USB input and play music through the system while your device recharges.

This had the most wireless connectivity of the speakers we tested. Crisp highs and a clean live concert sound. Its compact size will also fit short shelves well.

To use the AirPlay feature you need a Mac or Windows-based PC running iTunes (10.2.2 or later) connected to your wireless home network. Your iPod touch, iPhone, and iPad must have iOS 4.3.3 or later installed and connected to the same wireless home network.
  • USB Direct: The Sony SRS-X99 supports digital music playback from an iPod, iPhone, or iPad using its front-panel USB (type-A) port. The included IR remote offers basic playback control, such as Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track. However, advanced music navigation and song/artist information will have to be done from your Apple device. Your Apple iPod/iPhone's battery will be charged while connected to the receiver (max. 2.1A).

Q
does it have a rechargeable battery?
ahamed  Dec 19, 2016
1 answer
A
I'm afraid the Sony SRS-X99 speaker system does not include a rechargeable battery, and instead operates solely off of standard household current using the supplied 5' AC power cord. If you're looking for a portable wireless speaker to take with you on the go, feel free to get with an expert Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat--they can offer a personalized recommendation to suit your needs, preferences and price range.

Q
What music rate does the 3.5 mini jack support? The x88 supports up to 96/24, does this also?
nelson  Nov 10, 2016
1 answer
A
I really don 't know the rate but I have it connected to a CD player and the music sounds awesome. I am sure that if the X88 supports up to 96/24 the SRS-X99 supports at least that or better.

Q
I purchased a Sony HT-ST7 Soundbar with Wireless subwoofer and it is hooked up to my Samsung HDTV, both purchased from Crutchfield. If I add the Sony SRS-X99, and it is about 30' from the soundbar, will I be able to stream music from my Apple iPod Nano 7th Generation to both the soundbar and the SRS-X99 simultaneously?
bruce  Jun 23, 2016
1 answer
A
Not via Bluetooth, no. If you have an iOS device (iPod touch, iPhone, iPad), you can do this via the "SongPal Link" feature: "SongPal Link: With SongPal Link, a feature of Sony's SongPal app for Apple iOS and Android, you can link multiple Sony SongPal Link compatible devices (sold separately) together to create zones, allowing you to stream select online music services from Google Cast Audio and the SongPal app to different rooms throughout your house over your home's WiFi network." You will find this information, and more, by clicking the "Details" tab on the speaker's main webpage and scrolling down below the "Features & Specs" table. I hope that helps. Q
Hello, I purchased a Sony HT-ST7 Soundbar with Wireless subwoofer from Crutchfield and have it paired with a Samsung HDTV also purchased from you. I wanted to know if I can place this speaker in another room about 25' away and then play music from my Apple iPod 7th generation Nano on both the Sony HT-ST7 Soundbar and the Sony XRS-X99? Thank you.
bruce  Jun 23, 2016
1 answer
A
The answer is no. I just tried using two Bluetooth devices at the same time using my I-Phone the XRS-99 and JB Earbuds and I had to disconnect the Earbuds in order to listen to my I phone music on the Sony XRS-99 Sound System.
