Experience your movies, music, and video games in dynamic, room-filling surround sound with Sony's STR-DG910. It powers up to seven home theater speakers with an ample 100 watts each, for engaging wraparound home theater. And Sony designed it to take full advantage of the latest audio and video sources — from high-definition video, to XM Radio and portable music players.

HDMI switching and video conversion
If you've got multiple high-def components, you'll love the 'DG910's 1080p-compatible HDMI switching. Hook up three high-definition video components and switch easily between them, while maintaining pristine digital purity for the picture and sound. Plus, you get analog-to-HDMI video conversion for older sources like a cable box and a VCR. That means you can send all of your video sources from the receiver to a compatible TV via a single HDMI cable. This greatly simplifies video switching, while also preserving maximum picture quality for each source.

Simplified system operation
This future-ready receiver's HDMI connections will allow simplified one-touch operation with upcoming compatible Sony A/V components. Just press play on the remote, and watch as the receiver, television, and disc player all automatically power up and switch to the appropriate settings.

More digital entertainment options
The STR-DG910's "digital media port" lets you play music stored on your iPod® or PC when you connect additional Sony accessories. An optional PC adapter allows you to send tunes to the receiver through your home's wired or Wi-Fi® computer network. This receiver is also XM Ready (separate XM Mini-Tuner package package and an XM subscription required)and adds advanced decoding that lets you enjoy listening to XM's HD surround music channels. Plus you can use Sony's special digital processing mode to enhance the sound of your MP3s and other compressed music files.

Features

Bravia Theater Sync: Sony's Bravia Theater Sync feature allows you to easily manage select BRAVIA televisions and Sony HDMI audio and video components with a single remote. By connecting Sony components that are compatible with the HDMI Control function with a  HDMI cable, operation is simplified in the following ways.

  • One-Touch-Play: When you playback a component such as a DVD/Blu-ray Disc Player, the recover and the TV are turned on automatically and switch to the appropriate HDMI input.
  • System Audio Control: While watching TV, you can select to output the sound from the TV speaker or the speakers connected to the receiver.
  • System Power Off: When you turn off the TV, the receiver and connected components are also turned off simultaneously.

1080p HDMI Inputs/Output: The Sony receiver features three 1080p HDMI inputs and one 1080p HDMI output. The receiver transmits both audio and video through the HDMI monitor output to your TV or you can choose for the HDMI monitor out terminal to only output video to your television. Video signal that is input through HDMI input can only be output through HDMI monitor output terminal.

HDMI Video Upconversion: The STR-DG910 receiver is equipped with a video upconverter for HDMI. Analog composite video signals and component video signals can be up-converted to HDMI and output through the HDMI Monitor output to your HDTV.

Digital Media Port: Sony's proprietary DMP allows you to integrate a wide variety of music into your home theater system. The Digital Media Port allows you to connect optional DMP accessories to play music from a PC, Bluetooth devices, Network Walkman music players or iPod music players. You can connect the following adapters (sold separately).

  • DMP iPod Dock (TDM-IP1): Allows you to dock and play your iPod through the DMP compatible BRAVIA audio receiver. For added convenience, the dock also charges your iPod's battery. The DMP iPod dock is compatible with iPod nano (1st and 2nd generation), iPod (4th and 5th generation) and iPod mini.
  • DMP Media Port Wi-Fi client (TDM-NC1): Allows you to stream digital music from your PC to the DMP compatible BRAVIA audio receiver and view song information on your connected television or monitor. Requires PC with Microsoft Window XP SP2 operating system or newer.
  • DMP Bluetooth Interface (TDM-BT1): Allows you to wirelessly receive and play music through the DMP compatible BRAVIA audio receiver from your Bluetooth compatible notebook, MP3 player or mobile phone. The Bluetooth interface has a range up to 30 feet.
  • DMP Walkman Cradle (TDM-NW1): Allows you to dock and play your Sony NW-S705F or NW-S703F Network Walkman through the DMP compatible BRAVIA audio receiver. For added convenience the cradle also charge your Walkman's battery.

Digital Cinema Sound (DCS): Digital Cinema Sound is the concept name of the surround technology for home theater developed by Sony. DCS uses the DSP (Digital Signal Processor) technology to reproduce the sound characteristics of an actual cinema cutting studio in Hollywood. When played at home, DCS will create a powerful theater effect that mimics the artistic combination of sound and action as envisioned by the movie director. The DCS soundfields used in this receiver include:

  • Cinema Studio EX A: reproduces the sound characteristics of the Sony Pictures Entertainment "Cary Grant Theater" cinema production studio, great for watching most any type of movie
  • Cinema Studio EX B: reproduces the sound characteristics of the Sony Pictures Entertainment "Kim Novak Theater" cinema production studio, ideal for watching science fiction or action movies with lots of sound effects
  • Cinema Studio EX C: reproduces the sound characteristics of the Sony Pictures Entertainment scoring stage, ideal for watching musicals or films where orchestra music is featured in the soundtrack
  • Portable: reproduces a clearer sound image from your portable audio device; ideal for MP3 and other compressed music
  • Hall: reproduces the acoustics of a classical concert hall
  • Jazz Club: reproduces the acoustics of a jazz club
  • Live Concert: reproduces the acoustics of a 300-seat live concert house

Surround Modes: This receiver incorporates a wide variety of surround modes to bring you maximum enjoyment from your audio and video software. The surround modes include:

  • Stereo: 2-channel or multi-channel
  • Dolby Pro Logic: Pro Logic, Pro Logic II (music, movie, game), Pro Logic IIx (music, movie, game)
  • Dolby Digital:  5.1/6.1/7.1 Surround, 6.1 EX Surround, 7.1 EX Surround
  • DTS: 5.1/6.1/7.1 Surround, 6.1 Matrix ES, 6.1 Discrete ES, 7.1 Matrix ES, 7.1 Discrete ES, DTS Neo6 (cinema, music), DTS 96/24
  • Movie: Cinema Studio Ex. A, Cinema Studio Ex. B, Cinema Studio Ex. C, Headphone Theater
  • Music: Hall, Jazz Club, Live Concert
  • Neural Surround: XM Satellite Radio 5.1 surround decoding

Auto Format Direct: The Auto Format Direct (A.F.D.) mode presents the sound as it was recorded or encoded without adding any surround effects. When you select A.F.D. Auto, the receiver automatically detects the type of audio signal being input (Dolby Digital, DTS, or standard 2-channel stereo) and performs the proper decoding if necessary. You can also select Pro Logic, Pro Logic II Movie, Pro Logic II Music, or Multi Stereo to apply the appropriate decoding for movies or normal stereo sources such as CDs.

Note: The receiver will generate a low frequency signal for output to the subwoofer when there is no LFE signal.

Dolby Pro Logic IIx: Dolby Pro Logic IIx furthers the matrix decoding of Dolby Pro Logic II to decode audio signals recorded on two channels into up to 7.1 playback channels, including the surround back channel. Dolby Pro Logic IIx also allows 5.1-channel sources to be played in up to 7.1 channels. The mode can be selected according to the source. There are 3 Dolby Pro Logic IIx modes; Music, Cinema and Game.

Surround Back Decoding: This function lets you select the decoding mode for the surround back signals of the multi-channel input stream. When you select "SB Auto" and the input stream contains 6.1-channel information, the appropriate decoder is applied to decode the surround back signal (Dolby Digital EX, DTS-ES Matrix or DTS-ES Discrete decoder). When you select "SB On", Dolby Digital EX is applied when the output channel is 6.1 and Dolby Digital EX or Dolby Pro Logic IIx is applied when the output channel is 6.1. When "Off" is selected, no surround back decoding is performed.

Neural Surround: Neural Surround has been adopted by XM Satellite Radio for digital radio broadcasts of XM HD Surround recordings and live events in surround sound. Neural Surround employs psychoacoustic frequency domain processing which allows delivery of a more detailed sound stage with superior channel separation and localization of audio elements.

Two Channel Mode: The 2 channel button sets the receiver to power only the front left and right speakers, no surround and no subwoofer. 2 channels sources bypass the sound field processing and multi channel sources are down-mixed to 2 channels.

Analog Direct: The Analog Direct feature amplifies the source without any processing, only the volume and front speaker balance adjustments are active.

Speaker Level Adjustment: You can use the Level menu to adjust the balance and level of each speaker. These setting are applied to all soundfields.

  • Front Balance: Left +1 to +10, Center Balance, Right +1 to +10
  • Center Level: -10dB to +10dB in 1dB increments
  • Surround Left Level: -10dB to +10dB in 1dB increments
  • Surround Right Level: -10dB to +10dB in 1dB increments
  • Surround Back Level: -10dB to +10dB in 1dB increments (if only 1 surround back speaker is connected)
  • Subwoofer Level: -10dB to +10dB in 1dB increments

Dynamic Range Compressor: This feature allows you to compress the dynamic range of the sound track. You can select standard or maximum compression, or off (only works with Dolby Digital sources).

Effect Level: The Effect Level feature lets you adjust the presence of the surround effect for soundfields selected with the Movie or Music mode or Headphone Theater mode. You can choose from Minimum effect, Standard effect or Maximum effect.

Digital Decoding: You can choose auto decoding or PCM for the digital audio inputs. Auto will decode the signal in its original form (Dolby Digital, DTS, PCM, etc), PCM decodes the signal to 2-channel.

Speaker Setup: The Speaker Setup menu allows you to set the size, distance from your seating position, and location of the speakers connected to the receiver. The following adjustments are available:

  • Subwoofer: Yes, No
  • Front Speakers: Large, Small
  • Center Speaker: Large, Small, No
  • Surround Speakers: Large, Small, No
  • Surround Back Speaker: Dual, Single or No
  • Front Speaker Distance: 3 to 22 feet in 1 foot steps
  • Center Speaker Distance: range is from the front speaker distance setting to 5 feet closer than the front speaker distance setting
  • Surround Left Speaker Distance: range is from the front speaker distance setting to 15 feet closer than the front speaker distance setting
  • Surround Right Speaker Distance: range is from the front speaker distance setting to 15 feet closer than the front speaker distance setting
  • Surround Back Speaker Distance: when 1 surround back speaker is used, range is from the front speaker distance setting to 15 feet closer than the front speaker distance setting
  • Surround Back Left Speaker Distance: when 2 surround back speakers are used, range is from the front speaker distance setting to 15 feet closer than the front speaker distance setting
  • Surround Back Right Speaker Distance: when 2 surround back speakers are used, range is from the front speaker distance setting to 15 feet closer than the front speaker distance setting
  • Subwoofer Distance: 3 to 22 feet in 1 foot steps
  • Surround Speaker Position: set based on the location of the surround speakers, side low, side high, behind low, behind high
  • Crossover Frequency: set crossover point for speakers set to small, choose 40 to 160Hz in 10Hz steps.

Auto Calibration: The STR-DG910 is equipped with Digital Cinema Auto Calibration Technology which uses the included microphone to automatically check the speaker connections, adjust the speaker output levels, and calculate the distance from each speaker to the listening position. The microphone has an 18' cord attached that plugs into the microphone input on front of the receiver and has a threaded insert on the bottom so it can be mounted to a tripod.

Note: The auto calibration feature does not measure or adjust the subwoofer level output.

A/V Sync: The audio output can be delayed so that the time gap between the audio output and the visual display is minimized. This is especially helpful when you are using a large LCD or plasma TV or a projection TV. The adjustment range is 0 to 200 ms in 10 ms steps.

Equalizer: You can adjust the tonal quality (bass and treble level) of the front speakers from -10dB to +10dB in 0.5dB steps.

Headphone Sound Fields: When headphones are connected, you can select the following sound fields:

  • Headphone 2CH: outputs the sound in stereo, 2-channel sources bypass the sound field processing, multi-channel surround formats are downmixed to 2 channels
  • Headphone Direct: outputs analog signals with no sound field or tone processing
  • Headphone Theater (Digital Cinema Sound): allows you to experience a theater-like environment

Tuner: The STR-DG910 has 30 presets each for AM, FM, and XM, for a total of 90. In addition to preset and auto tuning, stations can be tuned directly by frequency or XM channel number.

XM Ready: You can take advantage of the variety and sound quality of XM Satellite Radio by connecting the optional XM Mini Tuner and Mini Tuner Home Dock and subscribing to the XM Satellite service. XM offers over 150 channels of music, news, sports, and talk radio and even has weather and traffic information in several major markets. The channel number, channel name, channel category, artist name, and song title are listed on the STR-DG910's display. Up to 30 XM stations can be stored as presets and recalled in the same way AM and FM stations are.

Input and Station Naming: You can enter a name of up to 8 character for the receiver's inputs and preset stations and display it on the receiver's display. This is convenient for labeling the jacks with the names of the connected components.

On-Screen Display: You can display the amplifier's menus on your TV screen through the receiver's monitor outputs.

Sleep Timer: The unit may be set to automatically turn off after 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes.

Dimmer: The receiver's display can be dimmed by 40% or 70%.

Remote Control

Multi-brand Remote: The supplied remote is pre-coded to control this Sony receiver, Sony video CD players, Sony DVD recorders, Sony tuners, Sony hard disc recorders, Sony Blu-ray disc recorders, Sony PSX, plus most brands of CD players, DAT decks, MD recorders, cassette decks, LD players, VCRs, DVD players, TVs, DSS receivers, and cable boxes.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Front Panel Inputs: The STR-DG910 features a set of front panel inputs with left and right RCA audio jacks and a RCA composite video jack.

Speaker Outputs: All the speaker outputs are binding post connectors, including front A and B left and right, center, surround left and right, and surround back. The binding posts are not 5-way because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs, but they will accept bare wire, single banana, and dual banana plugs. The front A and B speaker pairs are wired in parallel.

XM: This proprietary terminal allows you to connect an optional XM Mini Tuner Home Dock.

SACD Input/Output: No sound is output from the receiver when you play a Super Audio CD on an SACD player connected to the Optical digital input or Coaxial digital input. You must connect an SACD player via the analog input/output labeled "SA-CD/CD In".

HD Component Video Pass-Through: This unit features three component video inputs and a component video monitor output. These jacks feature an 80 MHz bandwidth, making them capable of passing high-definition video signals. The receiver's two component video inputs can be assigned to specific sources such as VIDEO 1, SACD, AUX, MD/Tape, etc.

Note: This receiver does not contain an S-video input or output.

1080p HDMI Inputs: The receiver is equipped with three HDMI inputs for connecting HDMI-equipped DVD players and Blue-Ray disc players. They are capable of carrying uncompressed digital audio and video up to 1080p. There is also an HDMI output to feed the signals to an HDTV or projector. The HDMI connections will pass both audio and video (audio to the receiver's Speaker jacks and HDMI Out jack and video to the HDMI Monitor Out jack).

Assignable Digital Inputs: The receiver features two coaxial digital inputs and three optical digital inputs. All the digital audio jacks will support 32 kHz, 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, and 96 kHz sampling frequencies. These digital inputs are assignable.

Headphones: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the speakers are automatically muted.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This thing wouldn't pass video for me. The 50" plasma I hoped to use with this only has a DVI input, which necessitates the use of an HDMI-DVI cable, which hasn't been a problem with my Denon and Onkyo receivers. Well, I RTM, and buried in there is the recommendation against a DVI dapter.
Too bad that wasn't more apparent to help me with my purchase decision.

My 1-star rating may be a bit harsh given that the audio amp and audio decoding are on par, but HDMI switching is critical since the single most expensive and important component is the monitor. There's also a marginal improvement in color accuracy and sharpnness using digital HDMI over analog component.

My opinion is that if technology doesn't work, it's useless. The HDMI spec (and HDCP) have been a thorn for the industry and consumers. Maybe that's why this Sony won't pass video (and/or audio) over the HDMI/DVI connector--absence of audio handshaking at the monitor. Caveat emptor when it comes to HDMI switching!

The bright side here is that Crutchfield's support and RMA process is the best out there--by far. The call center staffers are old school professional and knowledgable. They immediately sent me an email with a .pdf return label--nice touch. This makes me a return customer--along with the perceived fact that Crutchfield is being a lot more price competitive these days!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently purchased a new Home Theater System. This receiver was part of the package with my HDTV, DVR, Blu-Ray Player, Surround Bar, and Subwoofer. My installer also installed an outdoor speaker for my backyard and this receiver was key to using the indoor and outdoor speakers in unison. I have had this unit for about 1 month already and so far everything is great. You guys have excellent customer service and prices. The shipment came almost instantaneously. I have had a great experience Mr. Crutchfield and I will definitely refer my friends, family and colleagues to your online store.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver needs to be turned up to 55 out of 65 max to hear, no matter if I listen to the radio or watch a movie. The HDMI switching is cool but no good if this stereo overheats. Average 1 movie then this receiver needs to cool down for at least an hour or so!!! This is my third sony receiver and must say the worst. Cant wait to get rid of this!!!!!! Here i come DENON!

great quality, low price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great product for the price. Hooked Infinity tss-800 speakers to the reciever and it sounds great. Reciever is easy to use and the auto calibration is great, but still allows you to "tweak" the settings if you want. If you want high quality for a low price this is the way to go.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this receiver as a temporary replacement for an older Kenwood
I purchased in 1999. With technology changes with HD, I needed a
receiver that could handle HDMI and Component Video Inputs. My old
receiver was a higher-end model at the time I bought it (around $1,100),
but this Sony is a decent replacement. I'm running an HD Infocus Projector
with speakers in a 5.1 setup and everything looks and sounds
fantastic. I also like the fact I can expand to 7.1 surround if so desired.
The setup of the receiver was easy, and the sound quality is great for an
entry-level receiver. It has all of the bells and whistles I need for video,
and enough power to fill my room with vivid sound. For the price it is a great
buy.

Great Reciever for the Money

Written By 5panky, Roy, UT on Monday, April 07, 2008

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My system includes the following. Sony Bravia 46" LCD TV, Bose Sattelite Speaker System, JBL Front Channel speakers and Subwoofer, DirecTV HD PVR and Sony BluRay Player.

This is the second Sony receiver I have owned and it is great! I upgraded to this reciever for the HD features.

Something I was unaware of was the included microphone to set up your home theatre. I plugged it in, followed the directions in the manual and I get just the right amount of volume from each speaker. Much easier than messing with individual speaker volume in the set-up. I want great sound, and quality HD video switching with ease of set-up and this reciever delivers. As usual I am happy with the performance I get for such a small investment.

Great Receiver For The Money

Written By TerryL, Albuquerque, NM on Friday, March 28, 2008

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this receiver to replace an older Onkyo unit without HDMI input/output or HDMI upconversion. I connected my speakers, 52" Bravia TV, my DVD player and cable/DVR box and wow! Connecting components and TV via HDMI cables made setup easy. Only Onkyo receivers with their color coded speaker posts could be easier to set up.
Auto-calibration was a snap and movies sound great - I'll decide later if I want to manually calibrate speaker levels, etc. The OSD, while kind of clunky, is no reason to not purchase and enjoy this receiver - everything else is first rate.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this Sony receiver for my husband for Christmas and he couldn't wait to hook it up. We were hooking it to our Sony SXRD 60 inch TV, along with Tivo series 3, HD DVR and our Denon DVD player using all HDMI cables. When we were completed the receiver sounded GREAT! but we had no picture from Tivo or the Scientic Atlanta dvr. After calling crutchfield tech support and changing cable around we still could not get the signal to come through. The only suggestions that tech support could offer was that the receiver was either not compatible with our equiptment or we received one that in someway was defective. Thanks to Crutchfield for making it such a breeze to return.

Sleeping Beauty

Written By Rick, Roswell, Ga on Wednesday, December 26, 2007

I am not a Sony spokesman by any means. But I have used Sony receivers since my first days of setting up any kind of home theater, back in the late 90's. I bought this receiver to ugrade from my STR-DE898. I wanted the HDMI infrastructure for my new HD TV and PS3 (Blu Ray). Very nice. I am not hung up on what the display looks like, as long as I can wing my way through it and set it up the way I want. The auto set up seems like a nice feature and I plan to test it out. People at a local store tried to talk me out of the Sony, but they couldn't answer the THREE HDMI inputs. Set up is easy, and paired with my Infinity TSS-450 8 speaker set up (7.1), the sound is tremendous! Sure there are some better receivers out there...but not for this price.

Hard to take

Written By Chris, Southtown on Sunday, November 18, 2007

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The price for the HDMI features that the SONY STR-DG910 provides is superb. However if you are accustomed to any type of decent OSD (On Screen Display) this SONY will have you crying. After turning the OSD on through the receivers front panel, you actually have to turn the OSD off in order for the receiver to display video from any of your HDMI sources.

It's not anything like the OSD overlay on Denon receivers, which are the only OSD's I'm familiar with.

On my Denon you just hit menu button on the remote and the OSD comes up on screen, all the while whatever source you were listening to/watching is visible through the overlay. You make your adjustments and then hit menu again to exit out.

Once again, on the SONY STR-DG910, once you have the OSD displayed on your TV, you have to turn it off in the menu (I don't mean exit out of the menu, I mean turn the option off entirely) to get the receiver to display the source you were using prior to enabling the OSD.

I did call Crutchfield Tech Support and they said that this wasn't how this receiver was supposed to function, but after doing some more research through places like the AVS froums I think it was working correctly, which was unacceptable.

The OSD looks like the Atari game Pong when it is on the screen. It has a gray background and blocky black letters to go with it.

To me this was an absolute dealbreaker.

I mean SONY really could have made this OSD/Graphical User Interface user friendly but I guess it's all in the name of cutting cost.

It is an interesting receiver if you can stand the lack of a decent On Screen Display.

It has a fairly small footprint and isn't as tall as some other receivers if you are cramped for vertical space because of fixed shelves in your AV cabinet.

The speaker terminals are horrendous and wouldn't accept monster cable banana plugs which should have just pushed straight in?

Other than these 2 gripes it is a good value in an HDMI equipped AV Receiver.

If I'm off on the OSD functionality, could someone please post a reply.

Hope this helps.

Best receiver I've owned

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this because I got a new HDTV and I wanted to use the video conversion capability of this receiver to only have one cable running to the TV. What surprised me was how much better this receiver sounds than my old JVC receiver. For the money I think this is probably about the best receiver out there.

Geat bang for the buck here!

Written By rob, Highland Park, NJ on Saturday, August 18, 2007

I amazed at the quality of this receiver for the price. I have it paired with Infinity TSS-450 speakers and the sound is near pristine. The 1080P and analog conversion to HDMI conversion works great too. Lots of great features at a low cost.

The only negative is that you need to use your monitor for setup. Well you don't need to, but the 910's display is lacking. Once you get used to the navigation then you can use the display with much more confidence.

Basically this is for home theater use only, but if that is your plan, you are golden. Honestly, this is the best value on the market as of late summer 2007. Even a Sony hater, as I almost am, will appreciate the quality here.

Very good home theater centerpiece

Written By Dwogs, Seattle, WA on Friday, July 27, 2007

I recently purchased this receiver to build a 7.1 home theater system to go along with my new HDDVD and Blu Ray players. I am very impressed with the functionality, power, cost, and overall quality of the product. It is definitely not the most user friendly receiver, but all of the options are in the menu somewhere. Having all of my audio and video controlled at one source and then sent to the TV with only one HDMI cable is amazing. Overall I would definitely recommend this great value.
